Herbal eGram #769 The Age of Communication
Good Morning!
The last couple of decades have been considered “The Age of Communication”. Knowledge is at your fingertips with Google searches and such. In decades past one might have to check out an Encyclopedia and it would sometimes take hours to days and now it is within seconds. I can remember purchasing our Encyclopedia and how thrilled I was to be able to look up and learn about places I thought I’d never see personally.
The problem with information is that it is constantly altered. We learn what was once true is not any more. Information is dynamic. It flows and even facts can sometimes change. Those people who thought the earth was flat considered it a well-known fact that if you went far enough you’d fall off the edge of the earth.
When people communicate they impart views, facts and suppositions. The problem with internet searches; you don’t know what you are reading unless you check the source of information. Most news reports have a slant or spin according to the publication and often who is backing the publication. You probably have realized by now how influential the pharmaceutical industry and how it impacts the news we hear and read. It is really best not to believe everything you hear or see. I like to make sure I’m getting the same information from several sources before I communicate the view to others. Communication can take on several forms.
Often in restaurants you will see a group of people sitting together and most of them will be checking their cell phones or texting. We have lost the art of conversation! It is a true effort to discuss things. There are even books written about the fact that we are fast losing the ability to have face to face communication. Real problem solving involves communicating our thoughts and feelings in a way that the other person(s) can know what we are trying to express. Conversation includes voice inflection, facial expression and even body language.
So, are we really communicating? Is texting a good way to get your message across? Emotions are expressed by using emoji but there is something to be said for voice inflection. The pitch of one’s voice can relay how important something is to them. Passion cannot be expressed adequately by using an emoji.
Can intent be read? Didn’t you ever read a text and say to yourself, “I wonder what he/she meant by that”? I know I have. Phone calls are good. At least you can hear their voice however, you can’t see what their facial expression is. They could be rolling their eyes and you think what they are saying is serious and true. Nothing can replace face to face communication. Facetime and skype are excellent ways of communicating but they still don’t relay all of the information because you are basically talking to a face and you can’t see body expression.
What about, “Spellcheck”? I know I’ve been messed up a few times sending something that didn’t remotely resemble what I meant to say. Too many times I’ve hit the “send” button only to realize it changed a word and now the whole meaning of the sentence is skewed. Then you are quickly trying to repair the misinformation while that person is reading what was instantly communicated. Hopefully it’s something you both can laugh about.
Our cells communicate to each other and more importantly our gut communicates. Sometimes the wrong signaling occurs. We used to say, “The devil made me do it”. But, what really is happening we have too many colonies of bad bacteria sending messages to our brain. The bad bacteria have the ability to support bad choices in food and even lifestyles. Correcting the gut environment will help us be happier and healthier.
InForm is a way to correct bad lifestyle and food choices. If you are a member, you can watch a video that shows how JoAnn was able to get off medications, lose 60 pounds and put more meaning and energy into her life: https://www.naturessunshine.com/us/inform/ If you aren’t a member and would like some information on how you too can become healthier next year than you’ve been in ages, email me and I can help direct you to specific answers.
We all make choices every day and throughout the days. Sometimes we know we make poor choices but can’t stop. This 13 week program will help you understand why that happens and how you can take control over life and your microbes (which are misinforming your brain on what it is you really want). It’s time to correct your communication pathways.

Herbal eGram #768 Guts
Good Morning!
Saturday I attended my 55th class reunion. It was amazing. We attended a small Catholic School with about 60 in our graduating class. We’ve had many class reunions in between and most of us have kept in touch. Can you imagine having friendships that have lasted over 60 years? It is wonderful to know how much this group cares about each other. It’s so much fun hearing what people have been doing with their lives. Through the years who got married/divorced; who had children; what career path did they follow; what trips they have taken and now its about grandkids and what are you doing during retirement.
Growing up with this group I don’t remember very many overweight children. We walked or biked everywhere. We were outside playing until the street lights came on. Some of the more daring smoked (most do not anymore and in fact quit ages ago). I don’t remember anyone experimenting with drugs. And there were very few people who had allergies.
So it was with some distress that I found out that my dear friend, Mary had been suffering with gut issues for most of her life and finally found a doctor who would pay attention to what she was saying. She had some blood tests done and found out some specific foods she should stay away from and for the last 4-5 years she’s been doing better and better. Most people will have success by staying away from gluten and dairy while building the digestive system.
Gluten intolerance or sensitivities can initiate a plethora of conditions and symptoms. The more scientists study the Gut-Brain connection they see how neurological conditions like Autism and even Alzheimer’s can be attributed to how healthy the gut is. Problems with the gut have been linked to mental and emotional issues like depression, anxiety and brain fog.
Some GI tract conditions are treated with medication that doesn’t do much for the healing process. They may cover up symptoms but they do nothing to repair and reverse the inflammation contributing to the symptoms. Conditions like GERD, IBD, Colitis, ulcers and so forth often have more than one contributing factor. Often times there is an emotional component as well as nutritional deficiencies that go along with eating the wrong food.
Some surprising links to gut imbalances are: diabetes, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, non-alcoholic liver disease, migraines and even obesity. Chronic skin conditions can have roots in poor gut health. I personally feel that if a person doesn’t have good digestion and metabolism, you simply can’t be healthy. No matter how much good food you eat, if your body can’t make use of it then it does you no good!
Learning how to help your body be healthy is a personal responsibility. You can’t take your broken and abused body to a health professional and expect them to heal it. Healing comes from inside your body and the beautiful thing is: Your body wants to heal! Learn how to set that healing mechanism in motion. Brain Maker by Dr. Perlmutter
The next Herbal hour will be discussing Gut Health by improving digestion, reducing intestinal inflammation, removing unwanted organisms and boosting friendly flora. We will also discuss ways to help the damaged tissue heal and tone. You may know some about the allergy responses to certain foods but do you know the next step in your healing process. Eliminating allergy and inflammatory foods is certainly a good beginning but you might want to take the next step in your health path.
If you garden at all, you know that when the roots die so does the plant. The plant takes up nutrients via the roots and our intestinal system is “our roots”. What keeps the intestinal system healthy? We know we need water to assist with digestion and elimination; are you drinking enough? The formula for water intake is: take your body weight and divide it in half and that’s how many ounces of water you need daily (not to exceed 100 ounces).
Seventy percent of our immune response is centered in the intestinal membranes. Getting the flu is not because you didn’t get a shot as most drugs stores are now advertising. The fact is, if your immune system is compromised you should not hamper it more by getting a vaccine! In order for vaccines to work you must have a fully functioning immune system. This is one of the reasons most other countries do not vaccinate until the age of two. A baby’s immune system isn’t fully developed until about the age of two.
Understanding how your body works will give you the ability to make better choices about your health. Do you know where your stomach is? How about your intestines, pancreas, liver etc.? Come learn some facts about health.

Herbal eGram #767 Simple solution
Good Morning!
There are a plethora of symptoms that are attributed to the existence of heavy metals in our body. Some simple solutions would be to first know what to avoid and then secondly, detox! Some things are easier to avoid than others. For example: it is much easier to stop using aluminum pots and pans than it is to get rid of amalgam fillings. It is much easier to purchase a reverse/osmosis water filter that removes heavy metals than to experience the symptoms associated with conditions like pain, cramping, nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, impaired cognitive and motor skills when extreme exposure occurs and the accumulative ones of compromised immune conditions and neurological disorders.
We are far more susceptible to the harm done by heavy metal toxicity due to compromised gut issues. Many of our food choices have impaired our digestive processes and not handling stress can erode the balance of our gut biome. More and more research is showing that this situation is the leading cause of chronic illness. But, that is a subject for another time.
It is believed that one in three people struggle with Staph infection in their nasal passage which weakens the immune response. Many nasal sprays contain aluminum (not really a heavy metal but certainly toxic). So, if you are using a spray nasally on a daily basis, you could be delivering that aluminum straight into the brain. One suggestion would be to use Silver Rescue gel in your nostrils in the morning and then again in the evening to kill Staph infections that are the underlying cause of nasal congestion. That certainly is a simply solution!
Mercury makes up more than half the compound known as amalgam. Recently there was some research done on how chewing gum will release mercury vapors into the mouth and can be delivered into the brain via saliva. Having amalgam fillings removed should be done by a holistic dentist who has the proper equipment to handle this toxic substance. When amalgam is delivered to a dental office it is delivered as hazardous material. If some drops onto the floor it must be handled by a hazmat team.
Many tattoo inks contain heavy metals that have been linked to a large number of health problems, including cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Among the most concerning metals found in tattoos are mercury, lead, antimony, beryllium, cadmium and arsenic. Lead is in many of the sources of drinking water and a simple charcoal filter will not remove it. It used to be used in gasoline and can still be found in the ground near highways. It was used to make paint more spreadable. When that old paint chips away or is sanded the particles can be inhaled and cause severe toxicity. Lead can be very harmful to our kidneys and interferes with red blood cell production. Lead poisoning can give the same symptoms as diabetic neuropathy.
Vaccines have either mercury or aluminum in them and most antiperspirants include aluminum. Many people cook in aluminum foil. Food should never touch aluminum as it pits and flakes off into the food. This is especially true when acidic food is being cooked like tomato. Create a barrier between the foil and the food with parchment paper. It is very easy to line the foil before putting your food on it and the paper will protect the food from being contaminated.
Chemical fungicides will often contain arsenic. Make a solution of tea tree oil and dish soap: 1 quart of water in a spray bottle with 1 teaspoon of NSP concentrate (gentle soap) and 10 drops of Tea Tree Essential oil. This solution will usually stop fungus. You can also add NEEM oil (can be purchased at Lowes and is recommended for organic gardening). I use only gentle but effective solutions in my gardening.
Be careful handling batteries as many of them contain cadmium. Cadmium is also used in the production of PVC. Cigarettes are a major source of cadmium as are insecticides and fertilizers. Motor oil and auto exhaust also contain cadmium. Some of the issues cadmium contributes to are: osteoporosis, anemia, hair loss (alopecia), renal disease, migraines, learning disorders, chronic obstructive lung diseases and cardiovascular disease. Make sure you recycle your batteries responsibly.
For more information I suggest you listen to the recorded class: Heavy Metals class recording If you would like the class notes, email me and I will send you the pdf.
Be aware of the poisons you are putting into your body and make sure you create some simple solutions. Try doing a detox once or twice a year that is specific to removing heavy metal toxins. One that I like that is very simple is Bowel Detox. It is a great way to support your health!

Herbal eGram #766 Talc
Good Morning!
When something has the word “baby” on it we automatically think of it as safe. It is a false assumption. We are learning that manufacturers main objective is to sell products, and they will use any means to promote their products. One must be diligent in researching products; especially those products used daily. Pharmaceutical industries will pay doctors to make a drug look especially effective. They will down play the harmful side effects. They are safe from prosecution because they have made laws to protect them from being sued. Many drugs that are recommended for children have never been tested on this target group.
Recently we have heard about a link between ovarian cancer and “baby powder”. Johnson and Johnson, the company we trusted to sell us safe products for use on our children, have been sued because their talcum powder has been found in ovarian cysts. How many people have patted their babies (especially female babies) with “baby powder”? Did you know that inhaling talc is one of the chief reasons pediatricians warn against using baby powder on actual babies!
I can remember when using talcum powder was readily accepted and it came in a variety of scents delivered in a puff attached container. They were always on the “ladies dressing table”. It was shown in ads as the thing to do after a bath—dust with talc.
“Shower to Shower” is still recommended on TV for those who do sports activities. If you Google it, you will also see links to “Johnson and Johnson lawsuit” right along with those ads. Another thing that is recommended is Vaseline. Spreading this toxic petrochemical on your skin will deliver a lot more than you bargained for. There are much safer alternatives to these skin irritants and toxins.
If you like the idea of dusting, then use Arrowroot. It is a silky, highly absorbable, ground up herbal powder. Arrowroot contains several B vitamins, minerals and zinc that provide necessary nutrients for your body. It is gluten free and can be used as a thickener for sauces. Simply put a teaspoon of arrowroot in a cup and add about a half cup of water. Stirring this into a liquid will make it creamy and thick. It can be used instead of corn starch. If you do use corn starch remember to buy organic as most of the corn starch available is made from genetically modified corn. Arrowroot can be found in grocery stores that carry Bob’s Red Mill products.
Women often get a rash under their breasts and men will get a rash in the genital area. This rash is generally due to fungus. To kill the fungus use two drops of Tea tree oil mixed in with Silver Gel and put on the area after washing and drying. You can do this twice a day if there is a break out and once a day for prevention. The Silver gel has antifungal and anti-bacterial properties and the Tea Tree oil is well known for its anti-fungal activities. This same recipe can be used on athlete’s foot. The gel quickly dries and then socks can be put on.
I also recommend a foot bath using 1 gallon of warm water; 1 teaspoon ground ginger; 10 drops of tea tree mixed into one cup of Epsom salt and then poured into the bath water. Soak feet for 20-30 minutes daily. You can also put Silver Shield liquid into a spray bottle, mix with 5 drops Tea Tree oil to every ounce of Silver and spray the inside of shoes after taking them off. This is great to spray a gym bag to prevent germs and smells. I also like to add Lemon essential oil in equal parts to Tea Tree as it is quite refreshing.
Being vigilant about what we put on our body is as important as what we put in our body. Many cheap cosmetics are made with talc and you should be aware of cleansing these from your body before going to bed. I have mentioned the company Norwex before and they have a wonderful cloth to remove make up that is easy to use and you only have to rinse your face before drying it with this cloth: http://janicestcyr.norwex.biz/en_US/customer/shop/product-detail/42350 You get three in a pack and they are washable and reusable.
I also like to use a rose toner spray before putting on my make-up. The recipe is quite easy. Pluck the petals off of a rose that you know is not full of sprays. I like to gather mine when the rose is starting to lose its petals anyway first thing in the morning with the dew still on them. Place about a quarter cup of them in a glass measuring cup. Add boiling water to one cup and let sit for 20-30 minutes. If you’ve chosen a fragrant bloom the smell will be quite delicious. Strain off the petals and add this along with one ounce of Silver shield to keep from spoiling. Spray your face with this lovely toner in the morning and evening.
I hope you enjoy using these natural and inexpensive solutions to the more costly and health challenging versions. Let me know how you’ve used them and what your experience has been.

Herbal eGram #765 A Breath of Fresh Air
Good Morning!
The things we take for granted! Taking a full and deep breath of fresh air is one of the pleasures most of us take for granted. I love opening up the doors and windows and letting the fresh air flow through. I’ve never been bothered by allergies and so I can smell the flowers and fresh cut grass without having a sneezing fit, or fear my nose will start to run. Can you do this too?
It wasn’t until I began helping people with concerns like Asthma, Emphysema, COPD and other lung conditions that I realized what a blessing it is to be able to breathe without incident. Some of these conditions were due to smoking but some were products of working in an environment that harmed the air passages.
Having to carry oxygen with you has been made more convenient but it still is not the ideal situation. Enhancing one’s ability to breathe is something the medical community has very little to offer. There are many herbs and natural supplements that support better breathing. The Chinese herbs in Lung Support ATC for example have the ability to assist the body in eliminating congested mucus, relieve coughing and re-balance the respiratory system. It has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties as well as analgesic ingredients to help relieve pain and heaviness in the chest. It takes time to heal and the more things you do to support better breathing the faster you can heal.
Many people have had quick relief by sipping on warm water that they add a few drops of liquid Lobelia to. Lobelia has the ability to calm and encourage air passages to relax. The liquid works quickly and it can actually be sipped on straight from the squeeze bottle if needed. Used in conjunction with ALJ has been helpful with people with Asthma. Kathy P says she no longer carries any inhalers and she used to have one in her purse and glove compartment at all times.
Many people suffer with allergies and have difficulty breathing. If you have Sinus problems that result in a constant drip down the back of your throat than you need to check into doing a food diary. Often the food we eat is not being digested properly and that causes mucus to form. Some of the biggest allergens are gluten and dairy. Try doing an elimination diet and take an herbal support like Sinus Support (on sale during the month of August).
Oxygen is necessary for life. When our cells are not oxygenated, disease can flourish. Cancer lives in an anaerobic environment (without oxygen). It flourishes in a state of fermentation so it is fueled by sugar. When one changes this environment, the cancer can no longer exist. It is that simple! Change your fuel and breathe deeply.
The American Cancer Society would not tell you that. But Dr. Mercola states: “To some, a ketogenic diet amounts to nothing less than a drug-free cancer treatment. The diet calls for eliminating carbohydrates, replacing them with healthy fats and protein.” The thing is: are you willing to quit sugar and simple carbohydrates?
Find some time today to take a few deep breaths. If you are having a challenge doing so ask yourself why. Understand that you can do something about your situation. You simply need to ask someone who can help. Most natural supplementation can be taken without side effects. Maybe they won’t work but in general, they won’t hurt you either.
Diffuse the essential oil blend of Breathe Deep. Refreshing citrus smells and fir tree scents combine to make this blend a favorite of those who have forgotten how to take a deep breath. Sometimes we’ve had an emotional upset that makes us hold our breath or “takes our breath away” and we forget to signal the breathing process. Many people breathe from their upper chest and not their abdomen where they should be taking their breaths.
NSP has several wonderful diffusers to choose from. The professional series Nebulizing diffuser can infuse oil directly from the bottle into the air cleansing many square feet of living space. It produces mircro-fine vapor that disburses throughout the air creating a magnificent healing space. It has a built in timer so you can cleanse your home while you are away or you can enjoy the scents as you go through your day.
You can also purchase a water type dispenser that has lights like a large pillar candle. You can stop it at whatever light color you want or let it go through the many beautiful colors automatically. You can set it for 30 minutes up to 120. Add a few drops to the water basin and inhale the gentle essential oil scents or add more oil for more intense mood and energy.
Take a class in the uses of Authentic Essential oils. We are setting one up in Ann Arbor for October 8th where you can spend the day learning about these wonderful additions to health and get certification to help others. You can contact me for more information or call 800-223-8225 to register.

Herbal eGram #764 Expensive Urine
Good Morning!
Some people think that taking vitamins makes for expensive urine. There are a lot of things we do for prevention that “doesn’t get used”. Insurance, for example: you pay for health insurance on a monthly basis—same thing with auto insurance. Aren’t you glad when you don’t have to make use of these? I feel the same way about supplements.
I would much rather my body eliminates what it doesn’t need, than to be deficient when it does need it. It seems weird that in this country of plenty we have severe vitamin deficiencies but it is true. Much of what we eat is processed and has very little nutritional value. We also have followed the dietary suggestions of people who have no clue as to what is really healthy. The idea that fat is bad has led us to deficiencies in Omega essential fatty acids, Vitamin A and E deficiencies and much more. Some fats are bad such as foods that are fried, processed in oils and fake oils.
Healthy fats are vital to our brain and heart as well as skin. Vitamin E is absorbed equally if it is synthetic or natural but when it is synthetic only 12% is actually going to get to the tissue. The tissue is what needs it! The heart needs vitamin E. In fact, muscles need vitamin E. The eyes need E and so do the brain and kidneys. Poor and unsteady gait is one of the symptoms of vitamin E deficiency. We think of the eye needing vitamin A but, vision problems including constriction of your visual field; abnormal eye movements and some blindness can be contributed to by a lack of E. For absorption into the tissue vitamin E must be taken with other fats. I believe the “fat-free” diet regimen has created a huge contribution to today’s chronic illnesses.
Cheap vitamins are not worth the bother. In fact, cheap vitamins can add to the toxic load the liver has to get rid of on a daily basis. When looking for a vitamin supplement make sure you buy from a company that does heavy metal testing and is adamant about quality such as the one I buy from, Nature’s Sunshine. Most companies, such as Costco, simply slap a label on the cheapest a bulk supplier can offer. They do not personally have the equipment Sunshine has to test for chemicals that shouldn’t be in your supplement. This truly is where one usually has expensive urine. You may think you are getting a deal but your body is only getting confused.
Synthetic vitamin E is absorbed like natural vitamin E but it is not utilized in the same way. Most synthetic vitamin E passes through unused. The other thing is that vitamin E should be taken as a complex. Mixed tocopherals like NSPs Vitamin E: For maximum activity and benefits, both vitamin E tocotrienols and tocopherols are necessary. Vitamin E Complete with Selenium contains alpha, beta, delta and gamma tocopherol; alpha, beta, gamma and delta tocotrienols, rather than isolated alpha tocopherol as is found in most vitamin E supplements. Our vitamin E provides two families of metabolically active compounds that we know generically as vitamin E.
Just because one has bright yellow urine when taking vitamin B doesn’t mean that you’re taking too much. In fact, my theory is that if you don’t have bright yellow urine, you aren’t taking enough! The nervous system needs vitamin B –all of them. Some people think that taking B12 is all they need. A complex of B is what the nervous system needs. B3, known as niacin assists with circulation. B5, known as Pantathenic acid is needed for energy production and cell activity. All the B vitamins are necessary and instead of you choosing which one to take it is best to take a complex and let your body choose what it needs for repair and building.
How important is vitamin D? Well, one would have to be living in a cave to not know how important this Sunshine vitamin is these days. With all the sunscreen protection used in this country we have created a severe deficiency in this vitamin. What’s the best source of supplemental Vitamin D? Actually, the sun is the best source of vitamin D but you have to have a healthy conversion ability to get it to the usable element of D3. Getting a blood test to find out what your D levels are is a good idea. I’ve had people as low as 15IU when most health professionals agree you should be around 80IU. Sunshine’s Vitamin D3 is a great way to get your numbers up where they should be.
How about vitamin C? There are many sources of food in which one can get vitamin C. Citrus is one food source but there are many non-citrus fruits that are highly rated sources, as well. Papaya, strawberries, pineapple, kiwifruit, cantaloupe, and raspberries are also excellent vitamin C sources. Cranberries, blueberries, and watermelon are examples of very good sources, while apples, pears, and bananas are in the good category.
Eating a variety of vegetables and fruits on a daily basis will help you get the vitamins and antioxidants you need to maintain health. I feel that a little insurance by way of a good multi vitamin and mineral supplement is just plain sensible. If you choose a natural vitamin like Super Supplemental, you will not build up toxic loads in the liver. It is generally recommended to take 2 tablets per day but if your energy is low and you tend to eat processed food, you should take 4 tablets per day (per 150 pounds). In fact, the best way to take your supplements is Super Trio because it contain the Super Supplemental Multi and also includes a wonderful Omega 3 essential fatty acid along with an antioxidant capsule to fight free radicals.
Be proactive about your health. Give your body the nutrients it needs to deal with stress and a toxic environment. If you have any specific questions, please contact me.

Herbal eGram #763 Toxic Bloom
Good Morning!
You may have heard about the toxic algae bloom in Florida that is harming shorelines, aquatic animals and endangering the coastal waters. Known as cyanobacteria, the algae may be a type called microcystis, which are nerve toxins that may lead to nausea, vomiting, headaches, seizures and long-term liver disease if ingested in drinking water. Fertilizer runoff is the biggest contributing factor; primarily fertilizers that are used in the farming of Genetically Engineered produce.
Using a water filtration system such as reverse osmosis can insure that none of these types of microbes pass into your drinking water. We use Nature’s Spring Reverse Osmosis water systems and have been for the last 35 years. Unfortunately, Nature’s Sunshine will no longer be carrying this counter top unit. Looking for a reliable unit to suggest has been a concern. If you want to check the purity of your water you can have it tested for $15.00 at Ozark Water.
The algae bloom in Florida started in May 2016 in Florida’s largest freshwater lake, Lake Okeechobee. The lake serves as a catchall for runoff from surrounding farms and neighborhoods. As fertilizer runs off of farms and enters waterways, it leads to an overabundance of nutrients, including nitrogen and phosphorus, in the water — nutrients that fertilize the growth of the algae blooms now taking over the coast.
The Herbert Hoover Dike, is an aging structure surrounding Lake Okeechobee that’s at risk of collapse, especially during hurricane season. To reduce stress on the dike, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) carefully controls the water level in the lake, which means when rainfalls are especially heavy, as occurred in January 2016, water is dumped from the polluted lake into the surrounding waterways.
Industry, such as the Sugar Cane and cattle, has a major role in the blame for this problem but will take no responsibility in its clean up. The government has allowed them to discharge waste without having to draw permits. Heavy campaign donations have made politicians turn a blind eye to the harmful practices of these industries. If you vote in Florida check out those politicians and let them know your concern about the environment.
Lake Erie has also been struggling with algae blooms. Ohio Northern University chemist Christopher Spiese, Ph.D., and colleagues suggested that spikes in dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) runoff that have increased since the mid-1990s coincided with an increased use of glyphosate (the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide) in the area. Many of the world's lakes are at risk due to industrial farm fertilizer runoff feeding harmful blue-green algae. Once the algae are established, it's more difficult to get rid of than previously thought. The answer, according to the researchers, is better land-use management that addresses fertilizer runoff.
When planting genetically modified seed a farmer knows it is safe to put much more fertilizer and herbicides on these plants. In fact, if they don’t use more than usual, the plants will be attacked by super bugs and disease. If you know anything about the soil, these chemicals create a horrible imbalance in the ecosystem. Earth worms die off and the top soil shrinks.
I personally do not fertilize nor use chemicals on my lawn. Yes, it has weeds. For the most part, it is green and that is all I care about. Some of those “weeds” are beneficial herbs such as dandelion and plantain. I feel that our lake is that much healthier for the little I do (or don’t do) to endanger its health.
I encourage you to seek out farmers and ask them about their fertilizing practices. If at all possible, buy organic and locally grown food. Better yet, grow it yourself and use natural products that support the immune system of the plant and encourage healthy soil. When the soil is rich so are the nutrients the plants growing in them will take up. The soil can have an abundance of healthy minerals that plants take up.
Healthy algae can help detox the body from heavy metals and carcinogens. I would only use Nature’s Sunshine Super Algae as they will test for harmful microbes using over 200 testing procedures. Algae taken from pristine lakes such as Klamath Lake can provide the body with super nutrients to fight off disease. Many companies sell this algae but nobody does testing like NSP! In addition are Spirulina and chlorella. These green foods are extremely high in available nutrients to help nourish a depleted body.
This is a way to cleanse heavy metals and toxins out of the body while nourishing it at the same time. Spirulina contains two-and-a-half more vitamin B12 than liver, is the best botanical source of protein available, and contains several antioxidant-rich carotenoids. Chlorella is a freshwater green algae noted for its chlorophyll content. This is a great product for vegetarians! If you are trying to really push toxins out start with 2 capsules 3 times a day and then increase gradually to 4 capsules 3 times a day. Staying at this intense dose for a couple of weeks and then gradually go down to 2 capsules 3 times a day for a week. If you feel you are cleansing too fast go back to where you were feeling energetic and nourished.

Herbal eGram #762 Thumb sucking
Good Morning!
Were you a “thumb sucker”? Or, how about “nail biter”? Come to find out, a recent study published in the journal, Pediatrics, showed that children through adulthood were less likely to be affected by allergies if they sucked their thumb or bit their nails when they were young. Apparently the introducing of bacteria from the environment into the mouth had an immune building effect that lasted through adulthood. The study was done due to an increasing of allergic responses.
When I was young there were a few people who had asthma but it was rare. There were no children in my school allergic to peanuts (peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were a staple lunch). And, there was no such thing as gluten free. Are people more aware of how their body responds to food or, are our bodies more reactive to food? The food that we are eating has less nutrition due to chemical fertilizers and what they did to the soil.
Organically grown food has more nutritional value than conventionally grown food. Plus you aren’t introducing those chemicals into your body and confusing the immune system. The science of understanding microbes and how they contribute or deter to our immune response is rather new. I think we’ll be seeing more in that area. They might even prove my mother’s saying: “Everyone should eat a pound of dirt before they die”. Yes, we had to wash our hands before eating but there wasn’t this obsession regarding dirt that we now see.
The human body is complex and using chemicals such as bleach and antibacterial soap may alter the way it detects what is good and what is bad. Introducing (in small amounts) bacteria and viruses give the immune system time to process and create the correct cascade of events. Introducing microbes into our bodies can be done via skin as well. The skin is the largest organ of the body. It can expel toxins as well as absorb.
Spilling gas on our skin can immediately affect the liver. Washing it off won’t help. Using olive oil with an essential oil of lemon can help eliminate the toxins being absorbed. Using Milk Thistle to help the liver recover faster is also a good first aid response. After you have diluted the gas spill with the olive oil you can then use a gentle soap like NSP concentrate to wash off the oil.
Keeping a tube of Silver Gel handy is a good first aid tip. The other day I was driving home from the market when I noticed I had cut my finger on one of the plastic trays of flowers. I immediately took the Silver Gel from my car’s first aid kit and rub it into the cut. The throbbing stopped instantly. About 30 minutes later my finger began to sting and again I used the Silver. This time it lasted about an hour in which I was home and could use my home supply. The cut healed very nicely. I love using Silver as it is antimicrobial but doesn’t interfere with the immune system’s ability to heal.
Antibiotics have saved many lives however; overuse of them has created resistant strains of bacteria that are rampant in hospitals. A recent film called, Catalyst discusses the problem and possible solutions. I think we all need to be aware of how we can use natural solutions first. It is also important to understand that antibiotics are limited to killing bacteria!
Keep antibiotics as a last resort. Use Silver Shield and herbs that support the immune system and let the immune system decide how to deal with the infection. Colds and flu are viral and should not be addressed with antibiotics. Herbs like Olive Leaf Extract are excellent at helping the immune respond to the virus. Silver Shield can deter microbes that are bacterial, viral or fungal. You can drink the liquid or use topically the gel. It is safe and non-toxic. There is no way it can build up in the liver like old colloidal silvers.
In fact, NSP’s Silver Shield is patented to leave the body within 24 hours! Silver Shield is also very effective against MRSA and SARS. It has been shown to be effective for malaria! It is amazing that something so simple can be so helpful in fighting disease. I like to use essential oils along with the topical silver. If you have a fungal infection you could use Tea Tree oil along with the Silver to really kill the fungus.
Encouraging a healthy gut should be done daily. I use probiotics every day—not just when I’ve had a round of antibiotics. I also never use bleach for cleaning. If you would like to clean with Silver, there is a company called “Norwex” that has silver impregnated reusable microfiber cloths: http://janicestcyr.norwex.biz/en_US/customer/party/1642346 I love them.

Herbal eGram #761 Congestion
Good Morning!
Here in Michigan, and I assume most areas, there is a saying: We have two seasons, “Winter and Construction”. Winter weather can create congestion due to traffic accidents and weather conditions. The rest of the time congestion occurs because construction has blocked the normal flow of traffic. We sometimes have to merge into a single lane or detour to an alternate route. It usually takes more time to get somewhere, and it can be quite stressful if not planned for.
If we think ahead we can GPS where there are traffic delays or re-routing. Planning ahead can reduce stress. If we know a trip is going to take longer than usual and we plan for it we can bring a snack and a drink to calm any blood sugar concerns. We can diffuse calming essential oils like lavender or Core Blend. We can listen to a CD that we’ve wanted to find time to hear.
Being proactive with congestion, not only with travel, but also with our health, can mean less stress. Many people experience nasal congestion in the morning. Do a food diary and see what you ate the night before. Most often it is dairy or grains that will contribute to thickened mucus that causes us to cough and blow our noses in the morning. Taking Proactazyme in the evening before bed or first thing in the morning can often help break up the congested mucus. Eliminating the foods your body finds difficult to digest is helpful.
Congestion in our body creates symptoms from uncomfortable to life threatening. You may struggle with allergies and therefore battle nasal congestion however if someone is extremely allergic to say, shell fish, the congestion may close up the throat, or swell the tongue to the point of being life threatening. Peanuts are a real concern to some people and can’t have any food near them or their throat will begin to close up. A shock of epinephrine (epi-pen) will often snap them out of the attack but the best thing is to avoid the food if possible.
There are some theories about the severe allergy concerns that people have and that is that it began with a compromised digestive system that soon turned into leaky gut. The Leaky Gut allowed undigested particles to float into the blood stream and the blood responds to these particles as toxins. Enzymes are helpful in assisting the body digest nutrients so that the bloodstream can carry to the liver and the liver can than sort and compile into the necessary compounds needed by the body for energy production and cellular repair. Poor digestion can be experienced by infants as well as children and adults. I’ve had clients tell me that their baby was prescribed GERD medication. There have been no studies on infants to determine this medication safe.
The Herbs Catnip and fennel are long standing remedies that support digestion and calm the stomach. Babies don’t have the means to produce Hcl so why should they be put on a medication that is used to prevent the production of Hydrochloric Acid? Dill is another herb that helps with digestion. These remedies have been helping babies for centuries without side effects. Babies are often born with a Hiatal Hernia.
Hiatal or Hiatus Hernia is where a small portion of the stomach has jammed up into the esophagus causing congestion in both breathing and digestion. Several things contribute to this condition: stress (making the diaphragm tighten and using shallow breaths); lying down too soon after eating (allows the undigested food to gravitate and push up the stomach); and bending over when the stomach is still digesting.
There are other situations such as pushing when trying to make a bowel movement or wearing tight clothing that doesn’t allow the stomach to relax and digest. Many chiropractors can help by working on the diaphragm and the muscles and thoracic spine that can become jammed contributing to the inability to digest properly. One must be aware that having good digestion is important to being healthy.
Heart congestion can lead to a heart attack. The class I did on Saturday was about using supplements to help deal with congestion. One of the concerns is when the heart itself doesn’t get the nutrients it needs because of blockage in the coronary arteries. All our blood flows through the heart but the only blood that feeds the heart is that which flows through the coronary arteries. So when these become blocked the heart can die.
Eating healthy fats and taking fiber supplements such as LOCLO or Nature’s Three can help sop up bad fats and remove them from the body. The general recommendation for heart health depends on the age of the person and the health of the heart. Usually one would do well taking 2000 or 3000iu of Omega EPA/DHA daily with meals. Fiber should be taken away from meals and usually first thing in the morning or just before bed. I usually like people to take their probiotics with their fiber.
It is also a known fact that when one takes a cholesterol reducing medication it robs the body of CoQ10. Therefore taking this supplement is advised to protect the heart. If you are taking a cholesterol reducing medication you should compensate by taking between 500-600iu of CoQ10 daily. If you just want to protect your heart and you are above the age of 50, 200-300iu is recommended. If you struggle with tender or bleeding gums you should up your dose to 400-500iu and work to strengthen the gums.
I love liquid black walnut as an astringent for helping tone gum tissue. It also can eliminate a sore in the mouth within 24 hours. I pour a small amount into my mouth and then swish in between my teeth. I also will then massage my gums with my tongue and then swallow the black walnut liquid as it is high in iodine and there seems to be a connection between low iodine levels and the heart. This can be done at least once a day or twice a day. I usually will then brush my teeth with our NSP xylitol toothpaste. The xylitol mouthwash finishes the process and makes my mouth feel tingly and clean.
