Herbal eGram #760 Orange blossoms
Good Morning!
My neighbor has a mock orange bush and I love the smell when it comes into full bloom. Neroli is an essential oil from a special kind of orange blossom. It takes a ton of these orange blossoms to make a quart of this very expensive essential oil. It has a fresh delicate flowery smell that is addictive. It is subtle and not overpowering as most florals can be. Once you smell it you’ll fall in love with the scent of happiness and joy.
It was named after an Italian princess who loved wearing it as her perfume. It is uplifting and anti-depressant while relieving anxiety and nervous tension. Just a drop on the temples can immediately move negative energy and create a sense of calm. Clearing the mind of doubt and fear can help you make better decisions.
Many have claimed it to help relax and allow for a good night’s sleep and others have used it for calming performance anxiety. Spray the air and walk into it while taking a deep invigorating breath. Sprays are made with purified water and a teaspoon of Nature’s Fresh (in a 2 ounce bottle) to help emulsify the oil but not disturb the quality in any way. Droplets of Neroli will fall onto your skin and get absorbed while your breathing takes it into the limbic system to correct energy imbalances.
Clearly this would be a good essential oil to have on hand for emergencies or to use on a daily basis to enhance and calm. We all have days that seem to overwhelm us and zap our energy and having a quick solution on hand would be very good. The quicker one deals with negative emotions the quicker you can get back to enjoying life.
Neroli has properties that calm muscle spasms. Muscles are not just those you overwork through exercise and home maintenance. Your heart is a muscle that when in spasm can create such conditions as tachycardia and false angina. The diaphragm is a muscle and when it is in spasm can cause digestive distress and poor breathing. The colon also has muscles that contract and relax and when this system isn’t functioning well the body can become toxic.
So, aside from the fact it smells heavenly, there are many reasons one might want to try this safe and effective essential oil. One 5ml bottle will hold up to 150 drops of healing energy. Keep in mind that essential oils are highly concentrated and that Nature’s Sunshine’s authentic essential oils come with the “Sure Source” guarantee. We don’t use brokers that might cut the oil for their own profit. Most companies do not test for authenticity but NSP demands it.
If you are going to use a product to support good health, don’t you deserve to use the best? Saving a few dollars on an inferior product and not getting the results you expect is really not to your advantage. Its wasted money! I wouldn’t trust my health to any other company.
Have a healthy and happy summer!

Herbal eGram #759 Summer Heat
Good Morning!
Today is the first day of summer. We’ve been having summer weather for a week or so. We live on a lake and most of my neighbors are very happy about the 80 degree weather. I personally would rather it be in the low to mid 70s. I am much more energetic during those temperatures. I like to garden but when it gets into the 80’s and 90’s I find I can’t be outside more than 15 minutes or so without feeling exhausted. It might be an age thing as I will shortly be turning 73 (the perfect temperature!).
Heat can make one feel anxious and short of temper. In hot weather, the body exhibits changes — increased heart rate, blood circulation and sweating, and metabolic changes — associated with sympathetic nervous system activity, which in turn is linked to fight-or-flight responses. Hot weather also increases testosterone production, tilting that equation towards fight.
Blood pressure can be more of a problem in hot temperatures. Certain heart medications like beta blockers, ace receptor blockers, ace inhibitors, calcium channel blockers and diuretics (which deplete the body of sodium) can exaggerate the body’s response to heat. One tends to lose water through perspiration so it is really important to drink water to stay hydrated.
Make sure you are drinking half your body weight in ounces of water daily. Add lemon or liquid chlorophyll for a refreshing change. Some people feel that sports drinks like Gatorade help to replace electrolytes. The problem is that there is a lot of ingredients in this drink that are not healthy. A better replacement is Solstic Revive. This product tastes good and can add back electrolytes, amino acids, vitamins and other essential nutrients to help the body recover from strenuous exertion. Adding a packet of this to a bottle of water during and after exercise can help with endurance as well as hydration.
You can also add the flower essence Keep Cool. It helps with calming and soothing at an energetic level. Many people have Summer Seasonal Affected Disorder. This is a condition when people don’t want to leave the house. They can’t stand the heat and so they stay home. It can lead to anxiety and depression. Adding the emotional remedy of Keep Cool to a glass of water in the morning may help you start your day with correct minded goals and ideas. Preparing for a hot day is as important as preparing for a winter/cold day. Wear layers. Make sure you have a pop-up window screen that prevents the car from overheating when parked. Bring a bottle of cold water with you and sip on it while the car is cooling down.
Wetting down a small cloth like a wash cloth and putting it on your neck can help cool you down. Spritz it with some Peppermint oil in a spray bottle. Take a 2 ounce spray bottle and add about 10 drops of peppermint oil with a few drops of Nature’s Fresh Enzyme spray to help emulsify the oil in the water; fill the bottle with purified water. Close your eyes and spray and take in a deep breath. This usually will cool you off. If you don’t like peppermint try Lemon or Pink Grapefruit. All of these are very refreshing when outside in the heat.
Make sure you are eating healthy foods. This is the perfect time for salads. My lettuce is doing well but, I know it will soon bolt in this heat. I pick it and refrigerate it. Plant some more. Lettuce will grow all summer if you pick it enough and keep reseeding. If you don’t have a garden area, lettuce bowls are the perfect answer. These are pre-planted with a variety of lettuces and can be grown in a sunny window. You can find them at farmer’s markets.
Icy cold smoothies are another way to get good nutrition in without having to cook. NSP has a variety of mixes to choose from. Adding a half an avocado can make the smoothie the texture of a milk shake without the dairy. I love adding fresh kale or spinach to it along with a bit of fruit. Having a smoothie for breakfast is a great way to start your day. Give your brain the nutrients necessary for proper thinking.
Have a healthy and happy summer!

Herbal eGram #758 Iron, deficiency/excess?
Good Morning!
Years ago I remember Geritol advertising about iron deficiency anemia and that it was something that could be fixed by taking their iron supplement. Pernicious anemia is a deficiency in B12. The inability to absorb iron depends on the presence of B12 and a healthy colon. The main area of absorption is the duodenum. If healthy bacteria are not in abundance, unhealthy bacteria will create havoc with the presence of iron. More about this below.
Some doctors and scientists are concerned about too much iron in the blood (hemochromatosis). The inability for the body to use iron makes it get stored in organs and can harm the liver. Some iron is more poorly absorbed and it should be avoided. Having the gene, and allowing that gene to express as hemochromatosis, are not the same thing! Diet is a huge factor on whether or not you will actually have a condition of too much iron in the blood.
Cereals and flour products have been fortified with iron (the wrong kind). As people age they often will depend on cereal as a meal. I have had clients tell me that they eat cereal for dinner because they didn’t want to cook. Iron found in vegetables is a chelated form of iron and is much more easily absorbed. When you add herbs to a formula of iron, the body can uptake it and form healthier blood cells that can help bring oxygen into the tissues.
There is a lot on the internet about having too much iron in the blood. Too much iron can be a problem of course but I think they’re missing the point! Eating the right kind of iron is important but even more important is how healthy is your gut?
The upper intestinal tract was once thought to be a sterile environment; however, low concentrations of various bacteria are now widely accepted to live within or attached to its luminal surface. These bacteria are thought to be present from the time of birth and through adulthood, living in symbiosis with the human host. This relationship is thought to be vital for normal digestive processes, immunity, and intestinal development. Bacterial species usually present include lactobacilli, enterococci, oral streptococci, and other gram-positive aerobic or facultative anaerobes.
When these bacteria die off because of antibiotic use; poor food choices and stress other bacteria take over. These bacteria, referred to as Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) do a poor job of assisting with digestion and absorption of important minerals. One of those minerals is iron!
So, is it really a question of too much or too little iron or, is it in reality, poor intestinal bacteria!?
Once again do we find the medical community focused on the result rather than the cause? Dr. David Perlmutter suggests we begin by going “gluten free” and building the intestinal biome. When he spoke at our NSP Convention he told us that the health of the gut will determine the health of the body and more specifically the brain.
Correcting the gut balance will include taking in lots of friendly bacteria, eating and drinking fermented foods and stop eating foods that destroy friendly bacteria such as sugar and grains. Eating a plethora of vegetables and lean proteins and assisting digestion with enzymes will go a long way in repairing gut health. For more suggestions, listen to the webinar on gut health: https://www.naturessunshine.com/us/members/c1/webinars/ by Dr. Jay Vanden Heuvel.
We are coming into the growing season here in Michigan and I’ve already begun to harvest some herbs and foods from my garden (lettuce and onions with kale coming in fast). If you don’t have a garden you can grow food in containers. I love my “lettuce bowl”. You can purchase these at Farmer’s Market and grow lettuce in a sunny window. With care it can last months! It really is fun cutting your own lettuce for salads and so much better for you. Herbs too can be grown on a windowsill or in pots. Cutting some chives or snipping thyme to add to a dish can not only add flavor but nutrition.
Your amount of energy depends on the food you eat and your body’s ability to digest, absorb and utilize those nutrients. Stop putting dead food into your body and expecting optimum performance and energy.

Herbal eGram #757 In The Beginning…
Good Morning!
When we are born through regular birth via the vaginal canal, we pick up information along the way. This information includes what the difference between good and bad bacteria is, as well as vital instructions for the immune system. In a study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, researchers led by Anita Kozyrskyj found that babies born by C-section harbored a different set of microbes in their digestive tracts than those born vaginally.
When a baby is born through cesarean birth, the first exposure to environment outside the womb is the contact it receives in a hospital setting; A whole different environment than that of the birth canal. Previous studies have linked cesarean delivery to a higher risk of asthma, diabetes and obesity, but the reason wasn’t clear. Now it seems that the link has to do with the microbes the baby comes in contact with and how the immune system gets its information on what is good and what is bad.
Since the immune system does not get the same information as a vaginal birth, it is even more important for pregnant and nursing moms to take probiotics as a precaution. Probiotics help the immune system function better. They also play a role in digestion and absorption. Probiotics are not enzymes and don’t break down food into usable nutrients but they can assist in that break down once it has begun.
Perhaps this is a key to babies having colic and projectile vomiting. We know that there is often a bacteria called H.pylori that is present when one has a hiatal hernia and this effects digestion and slows it down. Herbs like dill and fennel seem to assist in digestion and often can help correct the environment along with probiotics when a baby is given these early on. Nursing moms can apply probiotics ( I personally like the Elevated Eleven as it has many strains and is great at inoculating good bacteria into the system) directly to the nipple before nursing the baby.
Knowing that the immune system of a newborn may be compromised makes me question the vaccine schedule US doctors and hospitals administer. Vitamin K, antibiotic ointment in the eyes, and a Hepatitis B vaccination are all administered within a very short time after a baby is born. There might be other shots too, depending on the vaccination schedule your pediatrician and hospital adhere to and any other medications your baby “needs”. Vitamin K and eye treatment are considered mandatory and Hepatitis B vaccines are strongly encouraged. These medications might be given immediately after birth and before you even know it. This website will give you more information: http://www.fitpregnancy.com/pregnancy/labor-delivery/ask-labor-nurse/vitamin-k-shots-antibiotic-eye-treatment-hepatitis-b
Understanding the body and why something is done, or suggested, is important information every adult needs to know. For example: if the parents of a baby do not carry Hep B, why does the baby have to be subjected to this potentially harmful bacteria via injection? If vitamin K is given because the baby may be one of 0.25% that is born with a K deficiency…wouldn’t it be better for the mom to take a supplement that provides K during pregnancy? Krill Oil is a very healthy way to get vitamin K for both mom and baby.
We now know that a fetus recognizes sound, feelings, and receives nourishment during the time it is in the womb. Preparing the immune system of a baby is very important to their well-being. It is also vital to all humans to have a healthy immune system. This is part of the ABC’s of Good Health. Learn how the body functions and what steps you can take to be healthier. What are you doing or not doing that could make your life that much better? The possibilities are endless! The first step is: understanding how it works.
We don’t come with instruction manuals but we do know some basic information that would assist in the body functioning better. We know it’s best to rotate tires and have oil changes in a vehicle to keep it running better. Do you have knowledge on how to help your body function better? You can start by attending a basic class such as “The ABC’s of Good Health”.

Herbal eGram #756 Where to Start?
Good Morning!
Many people who come to me for advice about health matters have no idea where they need to begin by getting healthier. They know that they are not feeling optimal. They usually lack energy and have lost the enthusiasm they had when they were younger. They are tired of a “pill for every ill”. Medications simply are not the answer for long term health.
Most people come to me because they are sick and tired of being sick and tired! One medication seems to lead to another and by the time one is 40 they feel like 60! Their doctor(s) perform a multitude of tests and generally can’t find anything “wrong”. So, people resort to the internet for answers.
Getting information is not the problem. Getting reliable and factual information is the problem. Often the person asking for advice has already researched their symptoms/disease/condition and knows more about it than me! Although I find a diagnosis interesting, it isn’t what I look at to help a person turn their health around.
My job is not about diagnosing, prescribing or to take people off medications. My job is to give you information about health and healthy practices. If you are going to build anything you must first have a sound base or foundation. The base of good health: nutrition that nurtures the body’s functions; water to help the body stay hydrated; removal of toxins and a positive mental attitude and emotional state of being. These are the ABC’s of Good Health.
In order for you to absorb healthy nutrition you must first be able to choose what healthy food means you; and then next thing is to have good digestion. Good digestion requires the use of enzymes and proper pH in the stomach for optimal breaking down of food into usable nutrients the body requires for health function. The body uses these nutrients for rebuilding, repairing and making new cells.
If poor ingredients are used, the result will be poor cell structure; then eventually poor tissue structure resulting in poor organ and glandular function. You’ve probably heard the saying, “Garbage in, Garbage out”. If you put poor quality food into the body the result will be poor function. It really is quite simple.
The lack of digestive enzymes contributes to most inflammatory conditions according to Dr. Joseph Mercola: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/08/21/enzymes-special-report.aspx Most medical doctors view GERD as too much acid. It is in fact, the long term inability to digest that causes food to break down so slowly that it rots in the stomach forming gas and bloating. Eating the wrong food will contribute to the poor digestive process. Often the undigested food will bubble up into the esophagus causing irritation.
Slowing the digestive process further with antacids is not the answer. Food Enzymes that help to break down fats, carbohydrates and proteins is what is needed. The best time to take these enzymes is during the meal. I usually like to take them after I have eaten a few bites of food. Drinking during a meal usually inhibits the digestive process so if you must drink: make sure it is purified water or water with lemon at room temperature.
When you drink cold fluids the pancreas has to work harder and the stomach has to get back to the temperature needed for proper digestion. Too hot or too cold disrupts the process and dilutes the enzymes needed for digestion. Chew your food so that your need for liquid is diminished. It takes time to correct years of poor habit. When you chew slowly your appetite is appeased with less food.
Enzymes are not probiotics. Enzymes are needed for digestion and for metabolic processes. Probiotics help correct the environment in the small intestine and the large intestine. The small intestine’s main function is absorbing nutrients into the blood stream. It does have a roll in digesting fats and when that is poor functioning we tend not to break down fat but to store it.
Food Enzymes has the ability to help the body break down carbohydrates, proteins and fats. If someone has had a gall bladder removed they may require additional supplementation of Hi Lipase to more efficiently digest fats. I personally have been taking enzymes for over 30 years. By the time someone is 20 they are already experiencing poor digestion. A diet that consists of cooked and processed food can wear out the ability of the body to create enzymes.
If you had only one thing you could do to create better health, taking enzymes with each meal might be that choice.

Herbal eGram #755 The Salt Debate
Good Morning!
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is in the process of developing voluntary targets for sodium reductions in food. The problem with this is they are not warning about the amount of sodium in fast food which comprises most of the salt Americans consume. Take the example of chicken fingers/nuggets which even very young children are eating: Typical MacDonald’s 3 piece chicken nuggets=400 calories; 3.5 grams of fat and 1010mg of sodium! Chick Fil A (same order): 360 calories; 3.5 grams saturated fat and 1230mg. of sodium. KCF is even worse: 340 calories but 4 grams of saturated fat and 1280mg of sodium.
So if the recommendation is to keep sodium below 2300, the meat portion of your lunch would be more than half the recommended amount! If you were instead have some baked chicken and a salad you would be so much better off. Then you could add your sea salt to the chicken and have a healthy meal. Many restaurants offer salads but you want to get the most nutrition so ask for romaine or spinach whenever possible.
The Grocery Manufacturers Association is concerned that if salt is removed, more harmful chemicals may be added to processed food to make it taste good. Processed food is bland and it needs something to create better taste. Often that something is MSG or flavor enhancers. These chemicals often disrupt the nervous system.
MSG, which is found in an estimated 80% of processed foods, sets off a variety of adverse reactions such as skin rashes, headaches, moodiness, irritability, IBS, heart palpitations, depression and more, depending on your tolerance. How fast and hard you get hit by these problems depends on your ability to tolerate it, but regardless, eating foods laced with MSG are devastating to your organs. In short, MSG has the ability to make people feel lousy in the short term and potentially, very, very sick in the long-term. Whole, unprocessed foods have the opposite effect. The choice is yours.
The real debate is: Is Salt Harmful? The war on salt itself is controversial, and there’s increasing evidence that salt is not the dietary villain it’s been made out to be.
Too little salt can have adverse effects on insulin resistance. For instance, in one study a low-salt diet led to an increase in insulin resistance, which is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes—and the change occurred in just seven days. Research published in JAMA also found that consuming less than 3,000 mg of sodium per day may increase your risk of dying from heart disease. A low-sodium diet is even linked to increases in LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and an increased risk of death for diabetics (another population that’s often advised to restrict their sodium intake).
If you eat a lot of processed foods and not many vegetables, there’s a good chance your sodium-to-potassium ratio is unbalanced. If you’re not sure, try a free app like My Fitness Pal, which allows you to enter the foods you eat and then calculates the ratio automatically. It's generally recommended that you consume five times more potassium than sodium, but most Americans get two times more sodium than potassium. It’s this imbalance that may lead to many of the health issues associated with excess salt consumption. Most of that salt is not from a shaker!
Diabetes in this country is at an all-time high. The kind of salt one uses is the important issue. Just as fat was a food demon for a few decades causing our bodies to become deficient in healthy fats due to the recommendations of a low fat or fat free diet. I believe this focus on salt may too create deficiencies.
Dr. David Brownstein was so adamant about people understanding the myth of salt that you can purchase his lecture on DVD or book: http://www.drbrownstein.com/Salt-Your-Way-to-Health-p/salt.htm His information on using salt in your diet to regain health and vitality is very interesting.
I prefer the salt that is mined from Redmond clay and it is pink. This mineral rich salt can make your food taste delicious while supporting better health. The thing to remember is that you need to balance sodium and potassium. Healthy high potassium foods include beans, dark leafy greens, potatoes, squash, yogurt, fish, avocados, mushrooms, and bananas. The current daily value for potassium is 3.5 grams.
So, when you hear all the nonsense about salt and high blood pressure, remember: The big food demon is processed food!

Herbal eGram #754 Oxidative Stress
Good Morning!
You’ve been told to “Eat your Veggies” but do you know why? Veggies provide the body with antioxidants. There are many antioxidants and the color of the veggie, or fruit, will provide certain antioxidants such as red for lycopene. Tomatoes and Watermelon along with red pepper are the best sources of lycopene rich foods.
Lycopene is beneficial to the body, primarily the heart. According to Dr. Weil, “Preliminary research shows lycopene may help to prevent heart disease, atherosclerosis, and even breast and prostate cancers. It may also be the most powerful carotenoid against singlet oxygen, a highly reactive oxygen molecule and a primary cause of premature skin aging”. That covers a lot of territory but, what about the other colors?
What about Purple? Where do we get it and what does it help? Purple fruits and vegetables, including acai and blueberries, contain important nutrients that have shown many health benefits including anti-aging. These purple antioxidants, called anthocyanins, have been shown to protect the heart and vision, promote mental focus, and prevent oxidative stress. Resveratrol is another fat-soluble compound found in some purple foods, such as grapes, red wine, purple grape juice, peanuts, and some berries. Research has indicated that purple foods may provide a cure for cancer. One of the ways I make sure I get my blue/purple antioxidants is by taking an ounce of Thai Go every morning. It helps me stabilize my blood sugar and kicks my energy up a notch. It is delicious with antioxidant rich foods such as Acai, blueberry, grape and especially mangosteen.
Orange/yellow foods include Oranges, pineapples, carrots, star fruit and sweet potatoes. These are known for their beta-carotenes. These are usually rich in vitamin C and Bioflavonoids. They support healthy immune response as well as skin and eye health.
Green is for chlorophyll. This very cleansing color is found in many veggies such as broccoli, green leafy vegetables and kiwi. Green antioxidant foods have potent phytochemicals such as lutein and indoles. Benefits include a lower risk of some cancers, improved eye health, rejuvenated musculature and bone, and strong teeth.
The last color is white and foods that are this color are onions, garlic and cauliflower. White fruits and veggies have been linked to lower cholesterol, decreased blood pressure, and a lower risk of heart disease. The key benefit of white foods is increased immunity. Eating white foods helps enhance the immune system, the lymph systems, and aids in cellular recovery.
How do I get all of them every day? The best way to do that is to take a full spectrum antioxidant such as Super ORAC. Super ORAC combines eight powerful ingredients known to quench free radicals. Free Radicals are the main contributor to Oxidative Stress and cellular damage. Think of Free Radicals as a “fire ball” that smashes into cells and connective tissue creating inflammation. Quenching the fire is essential as inflammation is at the root of disease.
Green tea contains polyphenols, which are potent antioxidants. EGCG is considered the most active polyphenol. It appears to help protect brain cells from damage. Mangosteen xanthones are potent antioxidants with a special affinity for supporting the circulatory system. One such xanthone, mangostin, helps the body battle the oxidation of LDL cholesterol.
Resveratrol protects both the nervous system and the cardiovascular system. Turmeric contains curcumin, a polyphenol with wonderful health benefits for the immune, circulatory and glandular systems. In studies, curcumin has been shown to inhibit oxidative DNA damage.
The açai berry contains powerful anthocyanins—water-soluble compounds with potent antioxidant actions. This fruit also helps protect against superoxide and peroxyl radicals. Other ingredients offer similar antioxidant benefits. All in all, Super ORAC plays an important part in your battle plan for achieving health, vitality and longevity.
This powerhouse of antioxidants can be found included in the Super Trio supplement. I love Super Trio as it provides essential Vitamins and Minerals along with a high potency Omega 3 supplement. Take a packet twice a day and you will have all your bases covered for basic nutritional support.
You still want to try every day to eat as many veggies and healthy fruits as you can but even the most dedicated needs insurance. Super Trio can provide that insurance for you.
Be sure you have an “Oxidative Stress-Free” Day!

Herbal eGram #753 Prosper
Good Morning!
There are two basic definitions to the verb, prosper. The first one has to do with money but the second one reads: to become very active, healthy and strong. When people do affirmations that include prosperity they often think they can just sit back and “money flows freely”. Prosperity is the state of being; it’s a noun which means—no action.
When one is emotionally and actively engaged in an activity the success is much greater than just “wishing on a star”. Creating an affirmation that is emotionally charged has much more power than just making a statement. What do you want to prosper or succeed in doing? Do you feel passionately about it? Can you envision the outcome? What do you do to manifest your dream? You must actively see and feel it coming to you.
NSP recently came out with an essential oil blend called, Prosper Success. It is a delicious blend of oils featuring: Orange, Cedar, Cinnamon and Spruce. Everyone who has smelled it has loved the way it smells. It gives one a sense of uplifting and encouragement. Orange essential oil has a history of being uplifting and creating a lightness in mood.
Cedar has been known as a skin support, antiseptic, antispasmodic, tonic, astringent, diuretic, emenagogue (stimulate blood flow in the pelvic area), expectorant, insecticidal, sedative and fungicidal. It has a wonderful woody fragrance that combine well with citrus.
Cinnamon has been showing some promise in balancing blood sugar and supporting the pancreas. In emotional healing the Pancreas holds the emotions pertaining to self-esteem. This very spicy scent can help lift the feelings that encourage positive thoughts. Some people like to mix Prosper with Be Courageous flower essence: in a two ounce spray bottle put in two droppers of Be Courageous and add 8 drops of Prosper then fill the bottle with purified water. Shake vigorously and spray!
Spruce also adds woody scent but it is very clearing. It helps the mind focus and can assist in getting rid of old self-sabotaging thoughts. Sometimes when it comes to success, we are our own worst enemy. It has been reported to help balancing hormones, improve memory power, energizing and yet calming. It reminds me of Christmas and a real tree!
Other oils in this heavenly combination are: 100% pure oils of Eugenia caryophyllata (Clove) bud, Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) flower, Boswellia carteri (Frankincense) gum resin, Commiphora myrrha (Myrrh) gum resin and Pogostemon cablin (Patchouli) leaf. I usually don’t like Patchouli as it is so overpowering but I love it in this formula. See this video and understand why I only purchase Nature’s Sunshine Sure Source Guaranteed essential oils: https://www.naturessunshine.com/us/product/prosper-success-essential-oil-blend-15-ml/3838/
I hope you try this amazing oil to support your goals.

Herbal eGram #752 Diabesity to Biome
Good Morning!
If you haven’t heard the term “Diabesity” It refers to a combination of symptoms that focuses on weight and blood sugar. Dr. Oz did a segment on it and has a quiz you can take to see if you fall into this category. It is wonderful information but people need more than information. They need a plan!
More recently you probably have been hearing about how our gut plays a huge role in our health. For years we’ve heard about “friendly bacteria” and we all got on the yogurt train. Some discussion has been had about the benefits of fermented foods and how it helps regulate the gut. I don’t know about you but, I can’t get past the smell of KimChi. A few weeks ago I started brewing Kombucha tea. It smells slightly vinegary but it tastes yummy! The beneficial bacteria and yeast in the brew are reported to help reset the balance in the intestines. It seems to give me an energy boost.
This past week I learned how the microbiome affect the way our cells talk to each other. Have you ever wondered why some people can eat anything and not gain weight while you can just look at food and get fat? Well, there are some interesting studies on identical twins. One twin was obese while the other was not. If they have the same genes, how can this be? Maybe they don’t eat the same food; maybe one exercises more than the other? The main difference was what was in their gut!
The microbiome is a network of cells that reside mostly in our gut. Only one-tenth of our cells determine what we are and nine-tenths (the microbiome) determine the rest. So, now how important is your genetic make-up? Not very! How do you protect and nourish the microbiome? That is partly what I spent the last 4 days learning about. Don’t expect to get the complete answer in this small newsletter. But, in a nutshell: A healthy gut requires: good food, drinking healthy water, proper rest, exercise, inoculation of friendly bacteria and supplementation.
According to the National Institute of Health: More than one-third (35.7 percent) of adults are considered to be obese. More than 1 in 20 (6.3 percent) have extreme obesity. Almost 3 in 4 men (74 percent) are considered to be overweight or obese. The prevalence of obesity is similar for both men and women (about 36 percent). There is documented proof that being overweight adversely affects our health. It also is costing our country trillions of dollars each year.
Drugs are not the answer! Statistics show that drugs have a very low success rate in helping people reduce and maintain reduction of Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar issues. They simply do not make people healthier. The side effects create other problems that cascade into taking more medication and feeling sicker.
I’ve learned some really good, practical information that is ground breaking in the field of balanced weight and optimum health. Our Hughes Center for Research has completed a study that is totally awesome. It is exciting for anyone who has struggled with health issues and weight. Nature’s Sunshine has created a plan to help people regain control of their health and balance weight. In this process they’ve seen Blood Pressure normalize, Cholesterol numbers get back into normal and healthy range and reduce the person’s metabolic age.
What is Metabolic Age? This is a calculation of how old your cells are and the amount of vitality your body is expressing. So, you could be chronologically 60 but metabolically 80! One of the ladies on the study is 62 and had a metabolic age of 80 when she started the program and within the 90 days she dropped her metabolic age to 40. She has since maintained the regimen and brought her metabolic age down to 30! It is now 6 months since she began the program and she can sit on the floor and play with her grandchildren; Quickly go up and down stairs without being out of breath and has more energy than she had as a young married woman. Her blood pressure, cholesterol and weight are now all within healthy range---in just six months! She lost over 50 pounds. Is it possible for you?
An easy way of tracking weight, metabolic age, muscle mass, hydration, percent of body fat and visceral fat (the fat around the organs) as well as, bone mass can be accomplished by simply stepping onto the Biotracker. This is a scale but so much more: Through sensors derived from your bare feet in contact with the surface of the scale it quickly calculates these numbers for you to view. InForm is a plan that has been taken to a new level based on some clinically proven facts that document the success of a great many people who followed the program.
If you are interested in learning more, please give me a call or email me. So many people are struggling with weight and health issues and now we have some answers. I can’t wait to be a part of your health team!

Herbal eGram #751 Boomer-angry!
Good Morning!
As the Boomer generation enters the “Senior” population, many are angry that they find themselves dependent on medications. It seems like every time you go to the doctor there is another medication added. In fact, there is a general rule of thumb that by the time you are 50 you should be on about 5 medications and it escalates through the ages.
Symptoms are a way for your body to say, “Something is wrong”. They are to be examined and researched—not just covered up. Some of things you could examine: what did I eat? Do? Not do? Am I --drinking enough pure water? Eating healthy food? What is my elimination been like? These all contribute to various symptoms. Putting healthy food into the body and having healthy elimination support good health in the body. It really is that simple. Learning to deal with stress and avoiding it as best you can is another thing that is important for good health.
As one ages, it is imperative you pay attention to your body’s response to what you do. It is more difficult for the body to heal as one gets older. So, I have techniques that support faster healing that I employ. As soon as I bump myself or injure my body in some way I rub. Now, most people will do the same thing but they stop too soon. You need to rub for 5-10 minutes! And as soon as the pain returns, do it again until there is no more pain. Creating good circulation to an injured area is key to faster healing. If you have injured an area (such a break), you may not be able to rub the skin but if you rub above the skin, the energy will also contribute to better circulation—try it before you doubt!
Adding some essential oil mixture to the skin is also helpful in aiding healing. You can contact me with specific ones but Tei Fu Massage lotion is a good choice to assist healing bruises, bumps, and even bites. Bites are the only thing you don’t want to use the rubbing method for as it spreads the toxins and we want to contain them. Using an ice pack will often contain the toxins. I have also found using the Tei Fu Lotion helpful in diminishing the sting. Just dab and leave alone.
Some Boomers have initiated dependency due to choices made earlier in life. Taking pain medication instead of finding alternative and healthier choices has led many to depend on stronger medications to deal with the aches and pains of getting older. “No good deed goes unpunished”…drugs always have a side effect and sometimes more than one. Opioids: Morphine, codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone and fentanyl all fall into this category. These drugs are not only addictive, they can lead to slowed breathing and death if too much is taken.
The liver becomes overwhelmed with trying to breakdown medical compounds and more symptoms arise. What can be done? Perhaps check out using herbal remedies and talking to your doctor about down-stepping certain medications. Work with an herb specialist who can guide you through supplements that can be taken with medications while you decrease dosage. Perhaps do a gentle liver cleanse with hot water and lemon and take Time Release Milk Thistle to support better liver health.
On average, if you take one prescription drug you'll be exposed to 70 potential side effects. Some of the more commonly prescribed drugs average around 100 side effects each -- and some drugs even carry over 500! If you multiply this by multiple drugs, and then factor in the unforeseen effects of taking multiple drugs at one time, the health risks are astronomical. Dr. Michael Stern, a specialist in geriatric emergency medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, told the New York Times. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/05/03/what-are-americas-most-popular-drugs.aspx
The big message is: What you eat, drink and think all matter. It has been proven over and over again that when people improved their diet and lifestyle, their health improves enormously. If you think 50 is old and your life is over, you’re right! And if you think that 50 is a fabulous age where energy abounds and you can really enjoy life, you’re right! One will bring your health down and the other will bring you boundless energy and good health. What do you choose to think? Are you angry and unhappy?
How’s that working for you?

Herbal eGram #750 Skin Deep
Good Morning!
Our skin often reflects how we are feeling and how healthy we are. If we are embarrassed we will usually blush. If we are feverish the skin will also blush and often perspiration will form. If we are hot, our skin will sweat and our face will often be red. If we have a condition called Rosacea, the skin will become red and sometimes swelling can occur in the eyelids and nose.
Many of us remember WC Fields and his bulbous nose and it became associated with his love for liquor. It is a myth, however. A bulbous nose is generally associated with the condition called Rosacea which can cause redness and swelling often leaving the nose to remain swollen at the tip. Getting to the root of the cause is what most proponents of natural medicine advise.
Herbalists and those who have studied natural medicine believe that if the blood is too toxic the skin will absorb some of the toxins contributing to the above mentioned, as well as other skin conditions such as acne, cysts etc. Doing a detoxification program starting with the liver and then the blood is generally recommended.
The Tiao He Cleanse is a wonderful two week cleanse that supports a healthy liver and its ability to detoxify the blood. Drinking plenty of water (half your body weight in ounces of pure water daily) will help the kidneys detoxify as well. Adding some liquid chlorophyll to the water will be a bonus in your program. After the two weeks are up follow it with the Ayurvedic formula Skin Detox.
This formula is useful in reducing skin inflammation and can help clear the blood. When the blood is toxic it will deposit those toxins in the form of boils, cysts, psoriasis, acne and even eczema. Giving the blood healthy nutrition during and after the cleanse is very important to keep the skin glowing.
Skin Detox contains herbs that have been used for centuries to tighten and tone skin while it purifies the blood. Other herbs in the combination are antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. Some are immune modulating so they can calm autoimmune responses that contribute to the inflammation and redness.
The spleen also is important for skin health and Picrorhiza kurroa is an Indian herb that is a bitter tonic known to support spleen health by improving circulation and eliminating excess fat. The skin often collects excess fat and creates a lumpy rather than smooth texture. You need to keep in mind that these conditions did not show up overnight and it may take up to a year to see results in some cases. It is recommended to take two capsules with 3 meals each day. Taking enzymes with your meal will help Skin Detox work better.
It is also recommended to stay away from food that can contribute to poor digestion and inflammation. Hot, spicy foods can contribute to inflammation (often one sweats when eating these). Dairy can clog pores and contribute to congestion. Prolonged exposure to sun, wind and cold can also be a factor in damaging skin. Alcohol can be a contributing factor but again, it is not the only reason for a ruddy complexion.
Changes essential oil blend has been used to support pivotal times during a woman’s life where she may need some hormonal balancing. It can be a contributing tool to ease times of transition. Lovely aroma makes you want to spray often and then breathe in to relax tension and anxiety. These stressors can lead to symptoms such as flushing and accelerated heartbeat.
Watch what you put on your skin. Some chemicals in soap, shampoo and lotions can damage the skin and affect the pH. Skin should have a pH of 5.5 so putting a lotion on the skin that is a 7 would affect the delicate balance of the skin. This acid environment helps the skin protect us from microbial invasion. The higher pH of some products contributes to dryness and often cracking. Using a topical cream with the proper pH can support the ability of the skin to help defend against infection.
A recent study published in the British Journal of Dermatology found that, over eight years, women with more alkaline skin experienced a greater number of fine lines and crow’s feet than those with a more acidic balance. Every morning I take a dab of Silver gel and spread it around my face and nostrils. This helps to tone and protect the skin. If I need a moisturizer, I will use a bit of Irish Moss Lotion. (both products can be ordered at Nature’s Sunshine)
Your skin is the first impression. Keep it healthy and glowing with proper diet, water and good nutrition. Covering up your skin doesn’t make the condition it is trying to tell you to pay attention to, go away. Ignoring signals just drives the condition deeper. Learn what these signals mean and take action to correct so that stronger and stronger symptoms don’t arise. Often a person isn’t taking in enough minerals and the skin will look pale and grey.
Eating a variety of fresh vegetables is helpful along with good digestion. Some medications interrupt the digestive process so taking a liquid mineral supplement is suggested. I love Mineral Chi tonic for the burst of energy it gives and how easily the body absorbs the balance of healthy minerals in it.
Take care of your skin—it is what holds you together.
