Herbal eGram #796 Brain cells
Good Morning!
About 35 years ago when I began helping people with natural health solutions and I was gaining knowledge about how our body works, there was the opinion of the scientists that all the brain cells you were born with was all you had. They didn't believe that brain cells could develop, only die. That simply didn't make sense to me. Finally in the early 2000 scientists caught up with my thinking and proved that brain cells can regenerate. In fact, it is called Neurogenesis.
There are certain parameters that either enhance regeneration or detract from it. But, first let's talk about where these cells regenerate. There is a part of the brain called the Hippocampus and it resides in the middle of your brain. It stores memories of all the experiences you've had throughout your life. It also stores emotions and hormones that trigger different functions in the body.
Last week I wrote about short term memory things such as losing your keys, or phone etc. These memories are also stored in the Hippocampus. At the end of the Hippocampus is the Amygdala which is the part of the brain that triggers fear. These areas of the brain are part of the "Limbic System". This system is affected by smells and therefore can be helped by the use of Essential Oils or it can be adversely affected by other smells. Smells that are toxic to us can trigger emotions. The toxin can be a memory of some sort.
For example if we associate the smell of pine with a bad experience that we had as a child, then pine will trigger an emotion that will make us feel bad. However, if we associate Pine with Christmas and that is a good memory, we will feel good when we smell pine. Not all smells will trigger emotions. But many essential oils will support feelings of well-being and be soothing, energizing, etc.
Cell regeneration can be enhanced when we have a diet rich in Omega oils. It can also be inhibited when there is very low cholesterol. 25% of the cholesterol in your body is found in your brain, where it plays important roles in such things as membrane function, acts as an antioxidant, and serves as the raw material from which we are able to make things like progesterone, estrogen, cortisol, testosterone and even vitamin D.
Dr. Mercola has more information on how to keep your brain healthy. I have used for years the product called Brain Protex which has in it some very good nutrition for the brain. I also take 2-3 grams of Omega 3 oil per day in either Krill or Fish oil form. Eating good fats will help your brain with the food it needs to remain healthy and regenerating. Sugar, caffeine and alcohol will adversely affect the brain as well as some medications and of course, injury.
Huperzine A is natural substance that comes from a variety of club moss and shown to be a super food for the brain. Huperzine A works by protecting the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) from being broken down by the enzyme acetylcholinesterace (AChE). Acetylcholine is essential for proper communication between cells in the brain. Research is showing that taking Huperzine A in a supplement form that passes through the blood brain barrier to protect the brain from AChE in addition to a healthy diet can be a very proactive approach to good brain health. It is not however, recommended when one is taking medications for depression, manic-depression or epilepsy.
When you add Ginkgo biloba with Huperzine A you get the added benefits of better circulation and antioxidant protection. Studies show that Ginkgo effectively decreases symptoms of impaired mental function. It can enhance memory and nerve transmission rate; enhanced learning capacity and increasing oxygen supply to the brain. Oxygen is absolutely necessary for healthy brain cells to generate in the Hippocampus. Aerobic exercise enhances this but so does breathing deeply from our diaphragm.
There is also a gut-brain response that brings in a whole other area of discussion. Let us just say that what we eat, drink and think have a great effect on our brain's health. Our goal should be to do whatever we can to support our brain health. My choice is to watch my diet, think healthy thoughts, do deep breathing and include organic essential oils along with healthy supplements. I love to learn and I think this has improved my ability to maintain good health.

Herbal eGram #795 Where's my keys?
Good Morning!
At one time or another we've all been there...where's my keys; my phone etc. There's even a little ditty about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OG3HrXcIwcA If you wanted proper English it would be, "Where Are my Keys?". But we're in too much of a hurry to even use proper grammar. Our lives sometimes reflect a frantic video game where there is a monstrous ball rolling down a hill and its following us. We lead busy lives and often are distracted. Jumping from one project to another and often not finishing them because we lose interest.
When one doesn't have a specific place for things, they get "misplaced". Some people have a box or bowl, or a rack they put their keys into/onto when they arrive home. They know exactly where the keys are when they want to use the car again. It is good to be organized and have a place for things (in a perfect world). Some people get obsessive about putting things in a specific place. This can be bad for you as well. A good balance between being organized and flexible is ideal.
I personally refuse to carry my phone around constantly like it was a third hip. I love to go out into my garden and commune with nature. I don't want that quiet time interrupted. I feel that we all need "downtime" and the ability to focus on self occasionally. Taking deep breaths and being aware of your surroundings is important. One needs to realize that the only time you can do anything about at all, is right now. Worrying about what you're going to do does nothing in the way of getting it done. Worrying about how things went is also unproductive. What you do right now and how you make the best use of this moment is what is important. It causes less stress when you focus on now.
When one is dealing with Mild Cognitive Decline it isn't necessarily about age. In fact, there are many of the younger population who deal with an inability to focus and remember. MCD measures one's ability at which: the speed one processes information, attention, memory, language, visual and executive functioning/reasoning. Attention Deficit is a huge problem with children and young adults as well as older people. One has to give the brain the food it needs to sustain thought. Some caffeine will actually inhibit the ability for the brain to sustain a thought. It is also well known that the brain can become dehydrated. So, drinking water is very important especially when one is sweating.
Ginkgo is an herb well known for its antioxidant support for the brain and protecting it against the inflammatory responses of free radical damage. It helps to increase oxygen to the brain and initialize cerebral circulation. When there is too little blood flow to the brain, symptoms of impaired mental function will occur according to over 40 clinical studies. Numerous studies have shown the benefits of taking Ginkgo in preventing mental degeneration. Also, a double blind study of young women showed that those who took the supplement significantly increased reaction times during a memory test.
Ginkgo, Bacopa and siberian ginseng all have very good studies that show cognitive improvement after taking them for a period of time. When mixed together in a formula that includes Malic Acid and B vitamins, we are talking some serious brain food! I love Focus Attention Powder. It is pleasant tasting and sweetened with Stevia so it doesn't impact blood sugar. http://hartonweb.com/nsp-herbs/bornforhealth.com/?sn=1843 Check out all the reasons this may be beneficial for you.
I also love Brain Protex as a supplement to support my brain health. Huperzine has been in the news lately as an important ingredient than can pass through the blood brain barrier to protect the brain ad to elevate acetylcholine levels which has been shown to help relieve some of the symptoms of Alzheimer. There is also good news: Huperzine A (club moss) is giving hope to those people who suffer from myasthenia gravis (an incurable disease that contributes to muscle deterioration and involves the muscles in the eyes as well as the rest of the body). The only downside is that people who are on prescription medications for depression, manic-depressive disorder or epilepsy should not take Brain Protex. Read all the good news about this product with the link above.
Ginkgo is a standalone product and so is Korean Ginseng. So, if one doesn't see results within a 3 month trial of using Brain Protex then, taking these two products together may make a difference. Three month trials of using a product will generally help you notice changes. It may not be total reversal but if one sees encouraging results then sticking with the product for a period of a year or until results seem to level off is a good idea. Korean Ginseng is generally used when the person is experiencing cold and rigid symptoms rather than Hot/Inflamed and active.
Breathing properly from the diaphragm is also important for good brain health as oxygen is needed for combusting nutrients and creating energy. You might want to set a timer for every half hour during an intense project. Every half hour take several "belly breaths" and get up and stretch. Take a couple of drinks of water. This very short break may not seem like much but you will be surprised how it helps to keep you on task. If you also sprayed some essential oil of peppermint during that break it can be extending your ability to stay sharp and focused.
Being in the moment and discouraging thoughts of what has happened, or what is yet to come will be instrumental in lowering stress levels while increasing productivity. Making good decisions will happen when one is on task. Giving your body healthy nutrients that include good fats will also be supporting better brain health. Cholesterol is needed in the body and this promotion by the pharmaceutical industry to reduce cholesterol has severely affected the brains of those who have cholesterol levels below 180. Cholesterol is needed by every cell of the body to function properly.
Next month I will be teaching a class on the brain and how to create healthy thinking and better brain function. Exercise your brain with challenging games and good nutrition. I look forward to teaching this important class. I love teaching classes and helping people understand the function of the body and bringing it back into balance. I hope you can attend. If not, I will record it and place it on my website in the calendar area. I like to do cross word puzzles; quick response games; word games and many of the brain teasing games available. Learn something new each day.
If one cannot focus (present time consciousness), is it no wonder we don't pay attention to where we put things? Think about it!

Herbal eGram #794 Who Are You?
Good Morning!
Are you a sibling, parent, teacher, friend, relative? We play many roles in life and if a friend described you it may sound totally different from how a relative views you. I'm a grandmother and I'm sure that all of my 4 grandchildren would have a different explanation of who I am based on the experiences we shared. My oldest granddaughter would view me as a teacher, plant lover, herbalist, and possibly many other attributes. My youngest granddaughter might view me as a sometime visitor who is kind and caring but she doesn't know me like my oldest granddaughter because we don't get to share many experiences.
I had 4 siblings and we're all about 2-3 years apart. My older brother used to talk about my dad and I would look at him like, "who are you talking about"? Because the dad I knew was different than the person he described. Oh there was some general things that were the same but the dad he knew was much crueler and often beat my mother. I don't remember this violence. I do remember my dad shouting at my mother (he was an alcoholic and verbally abusive). My brother seemed to recall dad hitting my mother and when he was a young teen and big enough to confront my dad, he stood up to him and said that if he ever hit my mother again he'd let my dad know how it felt.
I might have been 5 at the time but I don't ever remember this happening. I do remember lots of shouting and my mother cowering from it and crying. It taught me to hate confrontation and I never did develop good tools in confronting or arguing. As you might guess I was never captain of the debate team!
My dad was a good worker and had sound work ethics. When he was at work he was the best he could be. He also loved gardening and I learned my love of plants from him. We always had amazing Iris plants and he cared tenderly for them. My mother hated the outdoors. She showed us how to cook and bake and keep a good home. There was always a good meal prepared in the evening and we were given a strong sense of faith from our mother. Mom and dad weren't affectionate toward each other but you could tell that they did love each other.
All of us children learned how to drink and smoke from our dad. We all quit smoking in our 20-30s. I'm not much of a drinker now. I occasionally will have some wine or mixed drink but most often my drink of choice is water with lemon and no ice. I had two brothers who are (and one who died) alcoholics. It has given me the ability to see both sides of alcoholism and how the ramifications ripple through the family. Any addiction comes with consequences and those consequences affect all those who love the person addicted.
The flower essence of Be-Response-Able helps us to respond to stress with better choices. The first flower essence in the formula is Black Cohosh. The flower of the Black Cohosh is a beautiful frothy white with an amazing sweet fragrance. The root of the Black Cohosh is black as night. The contrast between the two replicates the spirit of the addicted. They so want to be that bright and beautiful flower but their addictions trap them in darkness. The energy from this essence can move you from that dark addictive behavior through to the light. Black-eyed Susan is also in this remedy.
It has that beautiful bright sunny yellow exterior but the center is black and brooding. Sometimes things happen in life that are traumatic and can bring us down into the darkness. Black-eyed Susan helps us restore the light and see the sunshine again. Energy medicine is powerful! This 7 flower essence remedy can be put into water and sipped on throughout the day. It can be taken by the dropper every 10-15 minutes when we feel the darkness enveloping. It would be a wonderful gift for anyone struggling with addiction or depression. You can also add it to a roll-on that has citrus or Lavender in it.
Our new "Shine" roll-on is premixed and ready to go. Just apply it to the wrist and put some Be-Response-Able in your water and see how your day goes. Every day find 5 things you are happy about. Maybe it's just the fact that you have the ability to see the trees and smell the flowers; food to eat; a place to sleep; friends who care etc. Shine on and help others to shine as well.
The you you think you are, may be different than the you others know. How do you wish to be known? Are you the co-worker who spreads joy or gossip? Do you smile often or frown? Do people like to gather around you because your energy is so inviting? Do you honestly show interest in others? One way to get rid of negative thoughts is to find something to be thankful for.
In general, I run my life by treating others kindly because I want to be treated with kindness. I treat others fairly because I want to be treated fair. I don't sacrifice myself for others because that would mean I don't respect myself and therefore I wouldn't respect others. It isn't always easy because many people have been treated badly and that is the only measure with which they know how to treat others. I also recognize that it isn't my job to force others to think the way I do. My life has been blessed, but I also think my attitude had a lot to do with it. So who am I: I am the best I can be, right now with what I have to deal with.
Sometimes you can't move beyond your situation. You're the Black-eyed Susan and you would rather be your petals but right now you are the center. Some situations are so intense you need others to help you see your petals. You need to know it's okay to focus on the petals. It's okay to ask for help. The you you are right now is totally dynamic and flexible. You do not have to be that you forever. When you are grieving about something it is important to sob and take deep breaths so you can create movement. It is when things are stagnant that disease finds its opportunity. Drinking water is important and why not use a dropper of Distress Remedy in that water?
Distress Remedy is another recipe of flower essences that help us deal with trauma and pain. http://hartonweb.com/nsp-herbs/bornforhealth.com/?sn=8778 This remedy helps us gain control and to find good answers. It helps us make good decisions when we are distraught. This remedy is perfect for when someone loses a partner/spouse/child. Put some in a glass of water stir and drink. The energy that gently moves through the body is one of "okayness". The thing we want is normal. Our world has been shaken and we just want it back the way it was. From day to day the world is never as it was. We live in a sea of uncertainty but we think we have the ability to control it. The best way to deal with life is to recognize this and be okay with it. To know that we have the tools to handle life's circumstances is empowering.
Focus on what is good in your life. There is always some good in your life. When we focus on the good, the bad seems to take a back seat. Just like the root of the Black Cohosh. You don't see the black root unless you dig it up. Focus on the beautiful white flowers reaching for the sunshine and enjoying the Spring rain. Raise your face to the sun and take a deep cleansing breath. Make use of the flower essences that help strengthen the spirit and be the You you want others to see and soon you will be the you You enjoy being.

Herbal eGram #793 Brilliant
Good Morning!
To be brilliant is to be of exceptional light and intelligence and this is what our body is meant to be. This brilliance is hampered by situations and circumstances that most often, we create. Occasionally these conditions are not of our control as when we are infants. But, once we become adults we pretty much control our ability to eat good food, think good thoughts, exercise, drink good water and make sure we are getting proper sleep. But how often do we abuse our body and expect it to be brilliant?
We injure ourselves by eat the wrong food often on a daily basis. Most of us know what is healthy and what isn't but we let taste decide for us. Healthy food can taste good but when you've eaten the massive amounts of sugar we've been raised on, it is difficult to change to eating only healthy food. For some people healthy food means to go gluten free because something in our body isn't able to break gluten down. For some people dairy is a huge anti-health culprit.
The way our food is raised or grown is another concern. Most conventional food is loaded with chemicals known to cause harm. The soil is denatured to the point we have less than one-third of the available minerals in our food than we had 50 years ago. Adding pesticides and herbicides to our food only adds to the chemical burden our body must deal with when we eat.
When we think negative thoughts such as reliving a painful experience, or hearing in our head a voice that abused us, we actually diminish our body's immune system. There is a science called: Psychoneuroimmunology. This science studies how our thoughts and feelings affect the nervous system which in turn affects our immune system. It is also known as the Immune-brain loop. Essential oils and Flower Essence therapy are very good in interrupting the responses to our thoughts and feelings until we can bring them into perspective.
Living with toxic people or in an environment that is unhealthy is another way that interferes with our body's ability to maintain health. There are herbs that help us to detoxify but sometimes we need to get rid of the toxic influences before we can regain health. Most of us don't have the tools to protect ourselves from toxic people. Understanding how others can play a huge role in what we feel and think of ourselves is something that should be taught in school. Yes, we talk about how bad being a bully is but do we really understand what makes a bully? The need to boss people around so we get what we want or to make us feel better about ourselves, is being a bully.
Other people are not responsible for making us happy. We are responsible for making ourselves happy and healthy. Sometimes that means taking a stand against abuse. Verbalizing that you deserve to be treated with kindness and love. Often times that isn't happening because our inner voice is not treating us kindly. We first have to love our self and then others will treat us as we expect to be treated.
Your attitude can determine how healthy you are. Those people who are determined to be healthy will do what is necessary to obtain health. These people don't blame others for their ill health. They don't dwell on what is wrong. but seek what is right. They move through their pain by concentrating on joy. Yes, it is hard! And it is so worth it. Health to some is a full-time job. You need to prepare good food. You need to think about good choices. It helps to have faith that "it's going to be okay". Recognize the people in your life that care about you. If you find yourself wallowing, choose to be brilliant!
Learning how to once again enjoy the brilliance that we can be is one of the most important lessons we can teach ourselves and our children. Being brilliant is being filled with light and love and shining so bright that others can see and feel your warmth. To be brilliant is to be alive. When you understand the Biological Terrain that is our body, you will be able to understand how to regain balance and be brilliant. Feed your body live and healthy food. Feed your mind good thoughts that make you feel alive. Share your brilliance with others and let's help each other be brilliant.
Hope you found this helpful...tell others.

Herbal eGram #792 Clear Days
Good Morning!
I often hear people complain about not seeing the sun much in Michigan so I looked it up and was surprised to see that we actually have an average of sunshine 50% of the year. And we have 30 days of sunshine during the summer. These are days when sunshine actually hits the ground. We all know that you can get a sunburn even if the sky is overcast; so, some sun is still getting through.
By the way, Aloe gel mixed with Lavender essential oil helps to heal sunburn and damaged tissue. Using a preparation as soon as you can will cut down on the amount of skin damaged. I use 2 drops of Lavender to one tablespoon of Aloe Vera Gel. It soothes instantly. Another trick is to do a "fast stroking" method to move inflammation. This method can be done before you can touch the skin with lotion. You simply move your hand back and forth swiftly over the burned skin starting about an inch away from the skin. Eventually you will be able to touch the skin with the swift stroking and then apply Aloe mixture. When the heat returns, repeat above until there is no more heat. I've used this method many times for any type of burn (for severe burns you need hospital attention).
I've been able to prevent blistering by using this method. I once burned my fingers on a curling iron and did the above fast stroking and Lavender treatment. It took a couple of applications but the next day there wasn't even redness. I've helped many people with sunburn by using this method. I recommend you make some up ahead of time to prepare for summer. The sooner you apply the method of stroking and aloe mixture the sooner the healing can begin and you also lessen the damage done to the deeper tissues.
During the winter it doesn't mean much as far as getting sun on our skin because I know I'm not the only one not sunbathing in the winter in Michigan! So, not only are we in the "Goiter Belt" and lacking iodine, we also lack exposure to the sun so we are vitamin D deficient as well. This could play a huge role on our mood and our health in general. Seasonal Affective Disorder can be greatly improved along with our levels of vitamin D when we supplement daily with vitamin D3. One way in the winter to improve immunity and get the D you need is with Elderberry D3fense. During the summer, I switch to one vitamin D3 and I take Olive Leaf Extract to help protect against summer colds.
Supplementing with Kelp or sea veggies and taking vitamin D3 would go far in keeping our energy up and improve immune support. The change of seasons can play havoc with people's tendency to allergies. Iodine deficiency make one more allergy prone. By taking just two Kelp capsules and two Vitamin D3 daily you may just find yourself happy during even the cloudiest days. You may also find that you have more energy and are less prone to colds and flu.
There is much to be said about having a happy disposition and how it impacts health. I have found in my 35 plus years of practice that those people who are depressed or sad tend to also have more colds and flu than those people who are cheerful. There is ongoing research suggesting a relationship to emotional health and physical health. A depressed immune system goes hand in hand with low energy and negative thinking.
Research scientists who study the effects of low levels of vitamin D tell us that it has a huge impact on risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes. It’s suggested that 80-100 ng/ml is the ideal level to aim for. This is why the Vitamin D Council recommends adults take 5,000 IU/day of vitamin D supplement in order to reach and stay at this level. If you have darker skin you may even have to supplement at a higher dose. The best thing to do is get a base line test to see what your levels report and then again after a few months to see if your supplement choice is making a difference. I have used NSP brand of Vitamin D3 and seen great results quickly.
If you would like to avoid some of the cost in having a blood test, there are online sites that offer blood tests. You simply pay, fill out the form and deliver it to a local lab to be drawn. You can then get your results online. Here is a link for more information: healthcheckusa.com Scientists also tell us it is difficult to get too much. Toxic levels are over 150ng/ml and I have yet to see anyone come close to those levels.
We simply cannot depend on getting our vitamin D from sunshine and so the second best way is to take a supplement that is easily metabolized. People with darker skin have a difficult time absorbing vitamin D from the sun as the skin has to convert it into vitamin D2. It then must go to the liver to be converted to D3 and then on to the Kidneys to be turned into the usable D4 that assists in many of the functions and processes in the body. If the liver is too toxic and overloaded (many are), then converting D2 into D3 is not possible and the burden on the liver is added to. Therefore, it is important to get a good quality of D3 that is easily metabolized.
We all look forward to warm sunny days because it makes us feel better. Now, we know that science is proving how important sun exposure is and how wrong the Dermatologists were when they suggested slathering toxic sunscreen on before even getting any exposure at all. Here is a recipe that was in the last NSP Manager's Magazine for May (Let me know via email if you'd like the complete pdf of this magazine and read.)
2 Tablespoons of Aloe Vera Gel; 2 drops of Lavender and 2 ounces zinc oxide; mix thoroughly and apply after being in water, or hourly. This provides approximately 20 SPF of sunscreen. Another cooling recipe for after sun screening is: Herbal Trim Skin Treatment (1 ounce) to 5 drops of Lavender and 1 drop of Peppermint essential oil. Make these ahead of time and take them to the beach with you. If you are concerned about a healthy bug lotion: 4 drops of Purity Essential Oil Blend; 1 drop of Lemongrass; 3 drops of Tea Tree and one tablespoon Hand and Body Lotion (scent free). Apply to reduce the nuisance of bug bites and chase away those pests.
Enjoy your Memorial Weekend. Hopefully you will be able to get your healthy dose of Sunshine.

Herbal eGram #791 Fish Food
Good Morning!
This past Saturday I presented a class about Sea Veggies and how important they are to incorporate into a healthy diet. Fish, such as Fresh Caught Salmon, is recommended for the Omega oil found in it. But, what do fish eat that helps their flesh get Omega rich...Algae! That's right. The reason these fish are so healthy for us is because they eat Sea Veggies. There are fresh water algae and there are sea algae. The sea algae contain iodine.
Iodine is needed by the thyroid but also other tissues of the body such as breast and prostate; the gastric mucosa, salivary glands, oral mucosa, arterial walls, thymus, epidermis, choroid plexus and cerebrospinal fluid. Iodine is just one of the nutrients available in sea vegetables. There are many minerals, amino acids and vitamins that support health as well.
Our skin, hair, nails and connective tissue all benefit from the mucilaginous fibers found in algae by adding specific nutrition and antioxidants. Sea veggies range in color from green, red and deep purple. Each color has different carotenes in them that have healing properties and an affinity to certain organs and systems of the body. The mucilage in these vegetables can be cooling and anti-inflammatory.
Most of these sea weeds help remove heavy metals from the body and some even give protection from radiation poisoning. Many sea weeds are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Generally speaking, they are considered cooling, sweet, and salty are indicated when there is swelling or a hardened mass in the body. They soften the hard swollen tissues, reduce heat and irritation while loosening hardened phlegm or mucus.
Kelp is one of the brown algae and is rapidly growing. Harvesting of kelp should be done with a rake that doesn't disrupt the root. Nature's Sunshine has an interesting video on how our kelp is harvested and examined on the spot; during manufacturing and drying and again before it is put into capsules. No heavy metal contamination is allowed along with other chemicals as well as dirt. Cleaning the kelp is as important as harvesting the best to NSP. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwcpjUohGRk&feature=youtu.be
Kelp is known to contain over 30 minerals, including zinc, copper, chromium, sulfur, silicon, iron, calcium, potassium and magnesium. It is a good source of many vitamins such as A, B1, B2, C, D, E and K. Kelp contains high amounts of algin which is a mucilaginous fiber that is good at absorbing toxins and soothing tissues such as the intestinal tract and skin. Kelp and Algin are found as single herbs as well as in combinations such as TS II and Thyroid Activator.
Here in the Midwest we have a need for iodine supplementation as we don't regularly bathe in the sea, nor eat from the sea on a daily basis. Rotating through a bottle of Kelp and then Herbal CA or TS II would probably be of great protective benefit. Bladderwrack is a sea veggie and in fact, was the first sea veggie to be studied for health benefits. It contains both iodine and tyrosine which are elements needed by the thyroid to make thyroid hormones of T4 or thyroxin. It is found in our formula CelluSmooth (a recipe known to help reduce cellulite in fat deposits).
Liquid Dulse is a glycerin extract and is a great iodine and trace mineral supplement for both children and adults. It's low in sodium and high in potassium so it is a great liquid to take if one is concerned about low potassium levels. It has the other benefit of being high in iodine and can be used as a flavor enhancer. Many people have an allergic response to MSG and using this liquid would be a good way to enhance the flavors of food without the side effects. It is one of the richest forms of silica which gives tissues flexible strength.
Super Algae is a combination of fresh water sea vegetables that include: spirulina, chlorella and blue green algae from Klamath Lake in Oregon. There is research suggesting it may be helpful in reducing allergic responses, boosting the immune system, balancing brain function and normalizing blood sugar levels. All algae have the ability to detox from heavy metals but this recipe is specific about eliminating arsenic. Some people have found that taking two capsules of Super Algae at breakfast and 2 again at lunch have helped reduce sugar cravings. Some add an additional two capsules in the evening. If one is struggling with allergies, it certainly would be a safe remedy to take for at least 10 days to see if it helps.
Taking an iodine supplement in greater than 1000mcg. is not recommended by many researchers as there seems to be a rise in Hashimoto's thyroiditis when the body is trying to utilize an overdose of iodine. Taking sea vegetables is a much safer way of getting this mineral into the body. There is evidence that in the presence of all the constituents found in sea algae help the body utilize iodine more efficiently without causing undue stress.

Herbal eGram #790 Iodine
Good Morning!
The thyroid and some other organs in the body need iodine to function properly. The following organs and tissues require the presence of iodine for good health: Breast tissue and ovaries; Salivary glands and gastric mucosa; Ciliary body of the eye; Cerebrospinal fluid and the choroid plexus where the fluid is produced; Brain, particularly the substantia nigra, an area associated with Parkinson’s disease .
There is a controversy as to how much a person needs. Here in Michigan we are smack dab in the middle of what is known as the "Goiter Belt" due the fact we do not have sea water near us. I just watched a webinar that discussed how iodine can help prevent goiter but when used without selenium can actually contribute to Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. "A threefold increase in autoimmune thyroiditis was noted once iodine deficiency was eliminated in an area of endemic goiter in northwestern Greece, an association confirmed in clinical settings." Anthony P Weetman, Autoimmune Diseases in Endocrinology, pp 50-51
Adding iodine to salt was a solution to the goiter problem but did it then trade off with causing the body to trick it someway into an autoimmune situation? When one adds the chemical iodine to salt that is chlorinated does that change how the body sees it? Chlorine, Bromine and Fluorine are all in the "Halogen" family along with iodine. Iodine receptor sites in the thyroid can be blocked by the bigger Halogens and therefore iodine cannot get in to the cell to initiate certain responses. So, if the salt is iodized but also chlorinated does that create confusion in the ability of the body to use iodine efficiently? And does this perhaps cause deficiency of other necessary nutrients. These studies are still going on. In the meantime it is recommended to stay away from table salt and use a more natural salt such as a pink or grey sea salt (unbleached).
In recent years there have been publications that promoted the use of high doses of iodine to support a hypothyroid situation. But, the use of high doses of iodine theory seems to have some tainted data associated with it and is not something that should be done without medical supervision. In the original calculation there seems to have been a discrepancy between dry and wet weights. The RDI of Iodine is 100-150mcg but some doctors were promoting levels of 12.5 mg of iodine daily. This is Eighty times over the recommended dose. These doctors reported that the side effects occurred in less than 5 percent of the patients: Allergies, Hyper or Hypothyroidism; and swelling in the salivary glands and/or thyroid. That means that 5 out of 100 could expect to get these symptoms. The good thing is that when removing the iodine the symptoms shortly went away.
Other factors found in thyroid conditions is the relationship between gliadin and the thyroid. "Antibodies to gliadin (and possibly the other 100 protein structures in wheat) also cause the body to attack thyroid tissue by molecular mimicry." Mercury is an antagonist to iodine and mercury is found in "silver" fillings and in vaccines. The Bromine mentioned above is added to bread products. Fluoride is used in toothpaste and mixes with saliva. The salivary glands are close in proximity to the thyroid and since the brain needs iodine; it would be advisable to not use this type of toothpaste.
Eating seaweed may be the answer to getting the iodine one would need and if one is concerned about having enough selenium, brazil nuts seem to have a high amount of selenium. Eating 7-8 per day might do the trick. Taking a supplement with seaweed in it, may be a better way to make sure you are getting the dose your thyroid needs. One of my favorite thyroid supplements is Thyroid Activator as it has Black Walnut (rich in selenium); Kelp (rich in iodine); and Irish Moss (found beneficial for Parathyroid glands) along with other herbs to support metabolism and thyroid health.
Unfortunately our oceans are becoming more and more toxic. We have mercury found in many of the beneficial fish. The water itself has been contaminated with run-offs and dumpings. http://www.ourradioactiveocean.org/ States that they have so many water samples but they have not enough funds or scientists to analyze them. Concern from the nuclear waste accident in Japan and how it may take decades to understand the total impact to the world's health. Having iodine on hand may be the answer to protecting our thyroids from radioactivity. Taking it on a regular basis is not the answer for keeping the body healthy and balanced.
If you would like to know more about this subject, please come to the class being offered on May 13th, 2017 in Southfield.

Herbal eGram #789 Chlorella
Good Morning!
I think this would be a great Disney Princess Name! Like Cinderella only teaching children about the importance of healthy eating. She could wear a bright green dress and have vivid green hair. She could be the queen that reigns over good health. Imagine the impact it could have on children focusing on what it would take to have good health and not worry about obesity, cancer or diabetes. These are serious illnesses that are being diagnosed in younger and younger children. They are mostly avoided by eating healthy, exercise and good mental health. We need this princess!
Chlorella is an amazing addition to the sea vegetables as it is a form of algae and has many health benefits that could help with Insulin Resistance; low levels of folate and B12. Consuming sea veggies can support good health. The problem with just eating these veggies is most are from contaminated sources. Having a company that is focused on quality (like NSP) makes it so we can have these in our diet and not worry about toxic contaminants. If you would like to know how your favorite sea vegetable product fares you can find a listing: http://labs.naturalnews.com/heavy-metals-chart-Superfoods-Sea-Vegetables.html
Kelp is another super food that is high in iodine and amino acids. Here is a link to a video that shows how NSP examines how the kelp is grown, harvested and tested and then retested for contaminants: https://youtu.be/kwcpjUohGRk Nature's Sunshine's Linda Hammonds is known kiddingly as the "Terminator" because she is so strict about quality. Linda is our chief office of quality control at NSP and has a staff of people to help her maintain the level of purity we want from our products.
The advantages of having kelp in your diet include: stimulates metabolism to burn fat; a viscous fiber (can absorb toxins--like heavy metals and carcinogens); blood purifier and assists nervous system function. Kelp has long been used in Chinese medicine to soften dry hardened tissues in the body such as cysts and tumors. It enhances kidney function and has a unique ability to regulate hormone function. It can be taken as a single or in combination with other sea veggies like chlorella and spirulina.
Klamuth Lake Blue-Green Algae is actually a fresh water algae from a lake in Oregon known as Klamuth Lake. This nutritious food is harvested and sold to companies in the US and the world. At Nature's Sunshine the testing is done on each and every lot received before it goes into any of the formulas. Many companies do not have the expensive equipment Sunshine has nor do they pay to have the scientists on staff that we do who can determine possible contaminants in the bulk items received from around the world.
The benefits of this particular algae is that it has all 22 amino acids and B12 to enhance a healthy diet. Super Algae has Spirulina, Klamuth Lake Algae and Chlorella in it and this combination of Sea Veggies can be a powerful antioxidant and super food adjunct to good health. Supporting the body's need for iodine and amino acids is just one of its many benefits. Our diet is often lacking in these important nutrients and when they are available often they are not metabolized well. Taking a supplement can quickly get these nutrients where they are needed for proper function.
Spirulina is a water veggie that comes from fresh water as well. It is an excellent source of nutrition as it contains approximately 65-71% protein making it one of the richest vegetable sources of protein known. These proteins are biologically complete, containing all 8 essential amino acids in their proper ratio. This unique veggie also is high in the fatty acid GLA as well as substantial amounts of Omega-3 and ALA. These oils have been extensively researched to supporting immune health. Spirulina is also a great beta carotene and one teaspoon can supply as much as 2 1/2 times the RDA of B12 (typically twice the amount found in an equivalent serving of liver). Along with other B vitamins, vitamin E and minerals of calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium and zinc.
Super Algae is an all around great food! Adding Kelp to it for the iodine would benefit most people's diet and support immune, nervous system and glandular health. Algae stimulates white blood cell count, binds with and eliminates carcinogens from the intestinal tract and promotes the growth of healthy colonic flora (pre-biotic) while strengthening liver and kidney function.
If you are like me and not fond of the strong sea veggie taste then taking this valuable food in capsule form is the perfect answer! http://hartonweb.com/nsp-herbs/bornforhealth.com/?sn=1056

Herbal eGram #788 Medical Disobedience
Good Morning!
I'm concerned about the health of my family, friends and those who seek my advice. I hope you understand that the following message is based on this concern.
The Military must abide by the health mandates that require them to receive vaccines in order to serve our country. Some of these vaccines may be necessary, but without testing the individual and knowing if there is a possibility of harm, it makes no sense to me to subject them to these toxins. These young men and women are going into battle; strange countries with often extreme temperatures; isn't that stress enough? What harm are we doing to their immune and nervous system by injecting them with adjuvants containing thimerasol or aluminum that are known toxins? There are no long term studies to show vaccine safety. The testing that has been done has been with a very small group and the "control" wasn't even a saline solution. The control contained aluminum. So obviously it was going to create side-effects. This is faulty testing.
Nurses are being forced to adhere to flu vaccines. When they are injected with the flu virus they can actually spread the flu due to virus shedding. Scientific evidence demonstrates that individuals vaccinated with live virus vaccines such as MMR (measles, mumps and rubella), rotavirus, chicken pox, shingles and influenza can shed the virus for many weeks or months afterwards and infect the vaccinated and unvaccinated alike. So, in an effort to protect immune fragile patients, they are instead compromising their immune further by this additional challenge. Many times nurses don't wear masks and their breath can contain droplets of the virus.
Some nurses have created a whole floor of "unvaccinated nurses" in protest to this schedule. Nurses are smart and they do their research. They know what harm and risk there is in putting the toxins that are included in these vaccines into your system. They also realize that if the body is being forced to make antibodies for last year's flu strain, the immune system is too focused to protect against other viruses like a cold or worse. It takes a brave person to lay their job on the line in the defense of health choice. I find this forced choice appalling. If there was better evidence to show that vaccines actually prevented disease, I might consider it worth the risk--but there is no study that shows vaccine safety!
What about babies? They are subjected to a HepB vaccine within 12 hours of being born. Babies have no developed immunity until they are 2-3 months old. So, they get this horrible virus injected into them and can't really develop antibodies yet because that system is undeveloped. Babies receive immunity from the birth canal; entering the environment and finding out what is self and "non-self" and through colostrum. This country has the highest infant mortality rate of any other industrialized country. In some cases, babies have been taken and privately injected without the parents even knowing it was done. (Medical Mafia)
The rate of vaccine mandation escalated from 10 vaccines to 69 for school-age children soon after President Reagan signed the bill that allowed the Pharmaceutical companies the right to make vaccines and not be sued if found faulty. Tax dollars pay for the vaccines to be made and administered. It takes no training to administer a vaccine--even Bill Gates can inject children with these deadly compounds. If you do not follow these mandates you are accused of "Medical Disobedience" and strict measures follow that can include you losing your job, career or right to parent your baby.
This, to me, is Medical Mafia! The information available about vaccine testing and safety are all promoted by the very industry that will profit by the use of vaccines. The manufacturers of vaccines are protected by our government and cannot be sued. This is like an automobile manufacturer making a car with faulty brakes, but you don't know about the faulty brakes and if you have an accident because the brakes were faulty--you have no lawful recourse. Far fetched...think again.
Recently Ty Bollinger hosted a series: The Truth About Vaccines. In the series he interviews: doctors, scientists, investigative journalists and harmed citizens who are telling the Truth about how vaccines have affected their lives forever! John F. Kennedy was quoted: "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing". Hopefully you will either pass this information on after you've read it or stand with me and stop this insanity of Medical Mafia. You can purchase the entire series (as I have) and share them with family. This country is supposed to be about Freedom; we need Health Freedom and we need unbiased information to make those choices.

Herbal eGram #787 Iatrogenic
Good Morning!
Conditions that are, "Doctor Caused" are referred to as Iatrogenic. Many times there are adverse effects when a patient undergoes a recommended protocol. Just yesterday a friend of mine told me that she has numbness from her big toe all the way up into the notch of her thigh ever since her back surgery. Often times doctors gloss over a procedure and you think it may only take a few days to recover when in fact, it is twice as long as you anticipate. It may not be their fault. It may be due to the fact you haven't got the ingredients in your body to heal properly.
Lacking nutrients is common. We are well-fed but nutrient deficient. Some of the blame goes in the fact that our food is depleted of nutrients. The soil food was grown in over 50 years ago had an abundance of nutrients. When farmers started to use commercial fertilizers the soil started to lose nutrients. When manure is used as a fertilizer, the worms are more active and their castings are what feed the soil. Worms can chew on rock and break down the minerals available in the rocks and then the soil is full of minerals available for microbes to take up and give to the roots of plants. This cycle of feeding has been interrupted by chemical fertilizers and pest control along with herbicides.
When the body doesn't have a good supply of minerals and nutrients it can take longer to repair. Our diet can contribute to inflammation which contributes to our pain. Using Silver is one of the ways I help my body repair quicker and fight inflammation and infection. I use a Tablespoon two to three times a day when I am dealing with an injury or infection. I use the gel topically as often as I can. This sometimes means I will apply it hourly. It makes a great carrier for essential oils. So, depending on what the injury is like, I will add a couple of drops of essential oil (often Lavender) to a small amount (about the size of a dime) of Silver gel. Lavender is a great tissue healer and the gel keeps infection away.
The most common iatrogenic condition is drug dependency. Nobody likes to be in pain. Most pain killers are addictive. Finding better ways to deal with pain, that don't include medication, is what Natural Medicine doctors promote. Last week I gave you information on breathing and how it can help move energy, and when done correctly, can actually decrease pain. Proper breath is taught in having an easier delivery when a woman is giving birth...talk about pain! Breathing can also help the body release stimulating hormones that contribute to inflammation.
This week I want to share with you some information on how deficiencies can contribute to pain. If the body doesn't have the necessary ingredients to: decrease inflammation; support immune health; encourage proper circulation and nerve communication; it will take much longer for the healing process to proceed. Also, if you are misusing the body and not allowing it to rest in order to heal; the healing process will be hampered. Taking drugs so that you can push through the pain is not helping the body heal. In fact, it will assist in taking longer to heal. Many pain medications are addictive and if one has addictive tendencies, it is difficult to get off of these pain killers. Often times they lead to stronger and stronger drugs. Addiction is epidemic in our country.
"Methamphetamine use was higher in 2013, with 595,000 current users, compared with 353,000 users in 2010"; according to drugabuse.gov. Heroin and opiates are used by younger and younger children. But, there are other addictions too such as porn, gambling, shopping etc. There are addiction receptor sites in the brain. Many of my colleagues and I believe that gut health has a lot to do with the receptor sites being more available. I'd like to expound on that in another email. But, the same membrane that protects the intestinal system also is supposed to protect the brain. Due to chemicals and the lifestyles we choose, that lining can erode and make available what it is supposed to protect. Look for more information on that subject soon.
There is some wonderful information available and one book in particular, "The Addicted Brain", by one of my favorite authors, Dr. Hyla Cass. It's a very short book packed with good information on addictions and recovery. One of the supplements she mentions is, l-Glutamine. She suggests that when one feels they "need a fix", whether it is coffee, alcohol or some other addiction; a person should open a capsule of l-Glutamine and sprinkle it under the tongue. The saliva will carry the nutrients to the brain and immediately the brain will calm.
Whether the person follows their habit or not then takes desire to change. It may not be an instant success but the more one does it, the more the addiction receptor sites are satisfied by the l-Glutamine. It is by no means the only thing one should do about their addiction. One should address why life is so dissatisfying that they have to look to numb it. Finding joy is something one has to address with conscious action. Make a list of 10 things that you are grateful for and then post it. Each day do at least one thing that helps you feel good about yourself. It can be as small as giving someone a smile or hug to help them through a day.
Be kind to yourself and treat yourself with respect. If it helps, act as if you are in charge of this precious person and you need to feed it and encourage it. I've seen people treat their pets with more respect than the people they say they love. Respecting yourself means you feed it with the nutrients necessary to obtain health. It means you get proper rest and exercise. It means you feed your brain with good thoughts and you have "down time" where you get in touch with your inner being. Send good thoughts to those you care about--even yourself!
I hope you've found this helpful!

Herbal eGram #786 We All Do It!
Good Morning!
We all breathe. But, 9 out of 10 people are doing it wrong. Shallow breathing adds to anxiety. When we just breathe from the top part of our chest and do quick breaths, we can't get enough air into our lungs. We actually become oxygen deprived. We lose the ability to think clearly. Every cell in your body requires oxygen in the production of energy.
Breathing by expanding your chest is what is called "Verticle Breathing". What is desirable is "Horizontal Breathing". This is accomplished by using the diaphragm muscles and the muscles behind the rib cage. In the book, Breathe, by Belisa Vranich she explains methods to help us correct our breathing patterns.
How we breathe effects our ability to deal with inflammatory markers and our pH. Some health enthusiasts recommend alkaline water equipment that can cost thousands of dollars. You can accomplish a more lasting correct pH by learning to breathe correctly without any cost at all!
Most of us have stress in our lives. By breathing more effectively, we can eliminate much of the adverse effects of stress on the body. Shallow breathing increases pain, anxiety, inflammation and raises blood pressure. Just think of the health benefits you can attain by simply breathing more effectively.
It takes reminders to break old habits. You will have to figure out when you can remind yourself to take these deeper breaths. I suggest that you put a time on your phone or computer and in the beginning set the reminder for every half hour. Also, every time you change positions. So, when you stand--check your breathing. When you sit--check your breathing etc.
Since this "new" way of breathing involves using the diaphragm you will want to relax the area under the rib cage in order to activate the diaphragm. So, I suggest you place your hand under the rib cage (just pick a side because you will do them both). Rub with the heal of your hand from center out toward the side of your body; then switch hands and repeat on the other side. This only takes a few seconds.
Now, for the breath: You want to increase the size of the area under the rib cage horizontally. In other words you want to become wider upon inhalation. Upon expiration you want to squeeze the air out of the lungs via the diaphragm. So, think of pulling your belly button into the body toward the spine. This takes activating the intercostal muscles. Here is a video showing breathing using the rib cage. In it the instructor says that you relax the stomach but what you really want to do is squeeze the stomach in when exhaling to get all the air out so you can then increase the lung capacity upon inspiration.
The object is to have the diaphragm controlling the breath. Think of the diaphragm as a floppy frisbee that lays just under the rib cage. It is the muscle that bellows the lungs. The lungs cannot contract by themselves. It is the diaphragm that moves the lungs so you can breathe.
Another trick is to use lavender oil under the rib cage. So, if you are able to, massage the lavender oil in under the rib cage before you begin your breathing exercise. This would be great to do before bedtime to get better sleep. It would also be beneficial before getting dressed in the morning and starting your day to reduce anxiety. The breathing will allow the aromatherapy of the lavender to assist with repair of body tissue while relaxing and activating the breath.
Dr. Mercola had an interview with Belisa Vranich where she demonstrated some of the techniques she teaches. Please view: Dr. Mercola and Belisa Vranich to better understand the importance of good breathing.
I came across a video about children and emotions that I thought was very interesting as well. Vranich talks about children in their early days puff out their belly when they breathe. It is a natural function. Somewhere around the age of 5-6 sometime a little younger, a child learns holding their breath when tense. Maybe they see parents do it. It really isn't important but what we want to do is retrain children to take deep breaths, especially when they are tense or upset. Here is the video on Children and Emotions. I think as adults we can learn a lot by this!
Lastly, I want to share with you the importance of taking deep calming breaths and concentrating on doing so through the diaphragm when you are in pain. Sometimes we do quick shallow breaths when we are hurt or in pain and this just recycles the pain. We don't get enough oxygen into the body and circulation is hampered. So, practicing breathing when we aren't in pain will help us to remember to do it when we are in pain. I did this when I was in a head-on collision. I thought, "what can I do right now to minimize my pain and assist in healing".
The very first thing I did was take deep relaxing breaths emphasizing the pushing out of the breath. In this case, my adrenaline was pumping and these are very inflammatory hormones. To reduce inflammation, exhaling hard disburses the hormones through the breath. After a few of these, I began doing "calming breaths". These are even deep breaths by concentrating on the diaphragm and full exhale out by squeezing my belly button in toward my spine. I was able to think more clearly and do what had to be done to get through the emergency.
Remember to help others with this lesson whenever an emergency occurs. Also, you can help someone calm anxiety by breathing with them. Diffusing calming essential oils will create even more benefit. Lavender is helpful but there are others that are very relaxing as well. Renew Releasing Blend is a combination of citrus oils and oils that enhance calming thoughts. It is great to reduce anxiety. In general, you should use a carrier oil mixed with the essential oils. Make a roll-on by filling the vial with NSP's carrier oil and put in 10 drops of Renew Blend. Rub on pulse points and do horizontal breathing exercise.
I hope you've found this helpful!
