Herbal eGram #775 Nuts!
Good Morning!
Most people have a basket of nuts with a cracker available as part of the Christmas season tradition. I can remember cracking walnuts and trying to get the meat out and most of the time having to use a pick. My favorite was the Brazil nut which was also the hardest to crack. We used the old fashioned metal kind that you had to use two hands to squeeze. Almonds were the easiest it seemed. Which was your favorite?
The famed Nutcracker shows up during this season and they can be found in many styles. Some people collect them. I purchased some for my granddaughters and they still put them out during this time of year. The Nutcracker Suite is one of my favorite musicals and one of my Niece’s daughters was in the ballet two years in a row. Oh the dance those sugar plum fairies performed!
But, far and wide, the new nut in town is the Coconut! Not exactly the size that could be put in the Nutcracker’s mouth but getting more and more popular as a food, oil and even to drink the water. The water is supposedly much more quenching and absorbable than just water and much better as a sport drink that some of its sugary competitors. More than 200 brands of coconut water are now being sold. As for the big companies, in 2007, a 25 percent stake in Vitacoco, a coconut water brand, was sold for $7 million to Verlinvest. Another 25 percent stake in Vitacoco sold to Red Bull China for about $166 million in 2014. So, it is questionable how truly healthy these bottled brands are.
There are different ways of getting into the coconut to get at the “meat”. Years ago we used to drill a few holes and drain out the water then take a hammer and smash it. Putting a clean towel under it and then wrapping it around the coconut before hammering it was a good idea as then the hammer wouldn’t go through the skin. Some nuts are harder to crack than others. It was usually an interesting experience. Depending on the freshness of the coconut you’d get “milk” or water. If it wasn’t fresh you’d get neither and it was tougher to crack and the flesh would be very dry. So shake your nut before buying it and make sure you can hear some liquid.
You can also find organic coconut oil available in many stores. Swishing with it as you would a mouth wash and keeping it in your mouth for 15-20 minutes reportedly has strengthened gums, whitened teeth, and some report they have eliminated small cavities. Whatever you find by doing this daily you will surely have a healthier mouth! The mouth has a variety of bacteria and often the wrong kind. Doing the oil will correct the pH and kill off bad bacteria. The saliva uptakes the benefits and carries it to the rest of body through the limbic system so you don’t have to swallow it to get benefit.
Coconuts have many health benefits but the one I’ve used the oil for is the ingredient Caprylic Acid. It is one of the three fatty acids (along with capric acid and lauric acid) that are found in coconut oil. It is a potent antifungal that kills Candida cells. If you don’t want to take coconut oil every day you might want to try taking Caprylic Acid Combination. During this time of the year when we overindulge in sugar, this might be a good supplement to counter some of the fungus that is fed by sugar.
Many conditions have yeast or fungus as part of the causal factor. Due to stress and diet the gut becomes compromised. Eating sugar or starchy carbohydrates changes the environment of the intestines and causes perforations in the lining. This is known as “leaky gut syndrome”. Whenever you have a syndrome you will have multiple symptoms depending on the weakest areas of the body. Some people will have fungal toes or nails; others will have a foggy brain and yet others will have allergies. The longer the condition stays in the body the more advanced the symptoms become. Some theories state Rheumatoid Arthritis has a background of Candida.
Some good websites to get further information: http://www.modernherbalist.com/influences.html; www.KnowYourHealth.com However it is good to seek the advice of a natural health practitioner who is versed in natural therapies in regards to yeast, bacteria imbalances and gut health.
Nuts are very nutritious but because they have high fat content some people will avoid them. If you are going to avoid fattening foods, try avoiding sugar and starchy carbs. These foods contribute more to obesity than nuts do. If you crack them open, not only are they healthier because they will be fresher but it takes more time to get to the food. Make sure you chew them well to get the full value out of this nutritious food.

Herbal eGram #774 Perforations
Good Morning!
How often have you tried to tear something where the perforations are and it doesn’t tear there but makes a jagged tear across? I’ve had it happen with checks, toilet paper and a dozen other paper products. This is what I feel happens in the lining of the stomach to those who take an aspirin a day. Tiny perforations occur and then contribute to leaky gut. Aspirin isn’t the only thing that contributes to leaky gut because I know a lot of people who don’t take it and still have gut related concerns.
However, it always bothered me when a person would put on their intake form that they take aspirin every day because they heard it could prevent a heart attack. Mounting evidence suggests that daily aspirin has no benefit for otherwise healthy people who are at low risk for heart attack. There have been instances where a person is having a heart attack and taking an aspirin has relieved some of the symptoms while they were seeking medical care. But as for daily intake…the risk is too high especially if you are already dealing with a compromised gut.
There is proof that aspirin will contribute to perforation and bleeding of the intestinal lining. The objective in taking aspirin is to lessen the stickiness of the blood and to that there are many safer things one can do. It is true that sugar can contribute to the blood being sticky. So, one could eliminate or reduce their intake of sugar which also contributes to inflammation. Doctors know that most people won’t comply with that suggestion!
There are so many other things you could take that actually have proof of benefit such as Magnesium. This mineral is considered the “Relaxer” of minerals. The heart needs magnesium and many of us are deficient in this important mineral. Zinc is another mineral often overlooked. Make sure you are taking a good food based vitamin and minerals supplement such as Super Supplemental.
There is much research being done on the benefits of Nattokinase which is a supplement based on the fermented food natto. Because nattokinase is often expensive, unavailable or unstable, NSP designed Nattozimes Plus. In addition to protease enzyme complexes, it contains other heart-supporting herbs, including hawthorn berries, capsicum fruit, dandelion leaf and the nutrient resveratrol. These ingredients have a history of heart health benefits.
Hawthorn Berries is considered one of the most significant natural remedies that supports heart health known in Western Herbal Medicine. In natural medicine Hawthorne has been known to treat successfully: angina, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, narrowing and hardening of the arteries, and it has been shown to improve blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart. It has the ability to enhance and strengthen the heart muscle.
Dandelion leaf has proven to be anti-inflammatory and diuretic. Some studies have shown that this can help reduce congestion of fluids. Congestive heart failure and high blood pressure are symptoms of congestion of fluids. Since dandelion does not deplete the body of potassium as diuretic drugs do, one would think this a quite sensible addition to a heart healthy supplement. You can read more of the benefits of Nattozimes Plus by going to my website in the link above.
Since Heart Attack and Stroke are numbers 1 and 3 in cause of death, supporting the cardiovascular system is something I feel people should look into and add to their supplement regimen. I personally have taken Mega-Chel as part of this heart healthy program for over 20 years. Mega Chel has a oral chelation program where you go through several months up to a year taking an increasing amount to chelate the body of toxic minerals that contribute to heart disease and stroke.
The mega chel program: The first week you take one tablet at breakfast and one at lunch; the second week increase each dose by one so you are then taking two twice a day; the third week you increase again by one and each week you increase the twice daily dose by one until you are at 5 tablets twice a day (usually by the fifth week). If you weigh more than 200 pounds you need to increase to 6 tablets twice a day. You also need to be drinking half your body weight in ounces of pure water (up to 100 ounces).
When you reach your upper limit (generally 10 tablets per day) you will also want to take a liquid mineral supplement such as Mineral Chi Tonic or Ionic Minerals. Take an ounce of this upon rising. The Mega Chel is chasing out toxic minerals and you want to replace them with good minerals so this should be done away from breakfast by about a half hour.
You stay on this program of putting good minerals in and taking the upper dose of Mega Chel with two meals for one month for every 10 years of your life. For example: if you are 40 years old, you will do the program for 4 months. Once you have completed the oral chelation program you begin the down-step process as slowly as you did the increasing. So, each week you can reduce by one table each meal. I maintain at two per day. You may experience better eyesight, more energy but especially a better sense of well-being. I saw no ill side effects from taking the program.
However, I have had people tell me that they started to get dizzy because they were trying to go too fast and increased the dosage too quickly. Follow the instructions and you should be fine. While doing this program, work on your diet and water intake. Make sure that you are drinking healthy amounts of water as suggested above. Try reducing or eliminating sugar and refined flour as these deplete the body of healthy minerals.
Since Heart Attack and Stroke are numbers 1 and 3 in cause of death, this is something I feel people should look into and add some supporting supplements to their regimen.

Herbal eGram #773 In Tune
Good Morning!
We are usually quite good at determining when we are hungry, thirsty, or tired, but when it comes to defining how we feel…not so much. We usually can tell if we don’t feel right but it is difficult sometimes to pinpoint what is bothering us. Because we don’t know the why we often will lay the blame on someone or something else. After all, if we knew what was wrong we’d fix it! So, it must be someone else’s fault. Laying blame on others is often the case.
We play games like: “Look what you made me do”. In 1964 Eric Berne wrote a book called: Games People Play. In this book he discusses that at any given time we can be reacting as parent, adult or child. We learn behaviors from our parents and often we react from this learned behavior. We also have learned patterns from childhood that are habits of response. When someone acts as an adult there is reasoning available. In the other two responses there is no reasoning. It is purely response.
In the adult phase of response one would examine how they felt about something. Before responding to a given stimuli they would pause and determine how they feel and what their response should be. They would also consider consequences of that response. How often are you in the adult phase when responding? This phase takes practice because we might have to consider what our first response is and whether that is from a parent or child position; we would then have to decide how it is we really feel about a stimuli. Taking action from an adult position generally gives us a happier outcome.
Let’s look at what a stimulus might be: this could be in a conversation someone points out something that you don’t agree with; it could be a news article; it could be the way you’ve been instructed to carry out a task. You see how many times a day you are given the opportunity to respond as an adult. Practicing taking a breath and creating a pause before you respond will help you make a better decision and result in a more satisfying outcome.
It is easy to blame others for our reactions. But when you think it out, it really is not sensible. In general it is our own fault that we end up in situations that are not healthy or good for us. So the first step in dealing with emotions is to recognize they are ours and therefore our responsibility. When we recognize that we can more clearly see what the consequences of our actions will be. So, the second step is to search out when we don’t feel good and what is happening during that time.
This takes some thinking about and therefore we must make time. After all it is us who will benefit from this exercise. Being truly happy depends on us being honest with ourselves and taking the steps that will help us to be happy. Reviewing what went wrong can often be painful but we need to look at it as a learning experience. So, for example: someone says something that upsets you and you respond automatically. The outcome is not what you would have wanted. Take some time and review how it could have gone differently if you had responded in an adult manner. By taking these steps you are creating a scenario that you can call upon the next time a similar situation occurs. So, instead of just reacting you can remember and respond properly.
Diet can have a huge roll on our feeling good not just physically but also emotionally. Irritation does not just happen at a physical level and neither does inflammation. If you’ve ever observed a two year old being frustrated with not getting their way you can kind of understand how irritation can devolve into anger. If our solution to not feeling right has been to ignore it or stifle it, we eventually find out that eruption (much like a volcano) will soon occur. Avoidance of feeling isn’t the answer.
Blame and avoidance are two methods that lead to unhappy outcomes. What we need to learn is taking a breath, creating the pause, and then responding with the consequence in mind. Some of the helpers for this are Essential oils and Flower Essences. They can be combined to help us during the pause to calm us and assist our brain in creating better answers.
Distress Remedy combined with Lavender Essential oil can help us create a balanced position in which to sensibly think out our answer. It takes only a few seconds to use these if we have them on hand. So, if you truly want to support a healthier and happier life I urge you to fill a roll-on applicator with these and apply them to your wrist pulse points when feeling upset. You can also use them several times a day to be proactive.
Put two droppers full of Distress Remedy into a roll-on base and add 10 drops of Lavender Essential oil and then fill with either a pure non-scented massage oil or aloe gel. Use this several times throughout the day and especially before having to make a big decision. Distress Remedy will help calm you and allow you to move from your head into your core where better decisions are made. Lavender is also very calming and can uplift the energy to a state where thinking clearly can be accomplished.
I hope you found this helpful. You can also try some of the other Flower Essences such as Be Courageous and Pink Grapefruit. This combination is great for moving you from a stuck position where you simply can’t find the answers to realizing there are options available to you. Another one is when you’ve lost trust in others: Open Heart and Bergamot. These combine to allow you to find those who are worthy of your trust and to stop those who aren’t from making you “lose heart”.
Let me know what combinations you’ve used and how they’ve helped. The best thing is they either work or don’t but they will never cause you harm. Tune into your body and address your feelings.

Herbal eGram #772 Emotional Energy
Good Morning!
Emotions can be either uplifting or depressing. The Energy of emotions is fluid. Like air and water our emotions flow. We can impact that flow by either damming them up or flushing them out. Forceful movement can be as harmful as a hurricane or flood. The best way is to keep the emotions flowing and moving toward a peaceful and happy direction.
However, nobody is happy all the time. Things happen. It is better for our health if we can maintain a certain level of happiness because scientifically we know that the higher our body vibrates the less disease can find a way in. But, accidents happen; death happens; disappointment happens and the human element often steps in to disrupt our emotional equilibrium.
So, it is important to understand that there are tools available to help with raising the vibrational levels of the body and move stuck energy that can contribute to a diseased state. We can’t possibly will ourselves to be happy. But that doesn’t mean we have to submit to low vibrations or energy.
Using essential oils can be uplifting without having to mentally decide to be happy. Knowing what tools can help is important and what is even more important is having them easily available when needed! When you need something to get you out of a funk, you need it now. You don’t want to wait for a delivery.
Distress Remedy is something I encourage everyone to have on hand. The first ingredient in this emotional remedy is Arnica (Arnica mollis). The herb Arnica is often used homeopathically for pain. When used in a flower essence it deals with emotional pain especially where shock or trauma has occurred. It can also help release old trauma that has been stuck at a cellular level for years. It is a wonderful “first aid” remedy. The second ingredient is Star of Bethlehem.
As the Season of Christmas is coming I think of The Star of Bethlehem as a symbol of hope and awe. This remedy helps us rekindle these emotions when we’ve spiritually burned out and become discouraged. The answer for some is to numb the pain but these answers only push the pain deeper. Star of Bethlehem can give us the hope of looking for new answers and acceptance.
Rock Rose is the next ingredient in Distress Remedy and it has the benefit of vibrationally lifting the energy of extreme fear even terror and panic. It rekindles the feelings of peace and trust while regaining control and the presence of mind. It creates a sense of calm so that one can think through their problems. Rock Rose has been used for night terrors and deep seated fears.
The addition of Impatiens in this formula helps one to deal with the irritation and impatience one feels when we want something to change. This can help when there are nervous tics, twitching, fidgeting or itching. Impatiens can facilitate the ability to think and act with prudence and calm. It can help with test anxiety and times of restlessness. It is also very helpful for high-strung animals who respond to nervousness with incessant barking.
Clematis is added because there is an element of disengaging when one has been through trauma. In some cases a person may appear depressed or without energy. The person may experience vertigo, dizziness or light headed-ness. A person may lose focus and seem absent minded. Clematis can help the person feel grounded in reality and attached to their body and be in the present.
Cherry Plum is a wonderful addition as it helps when a person is in an extreme state of distress and/or pain and fears they will fall apart or lose control. It helps you gain control over the feeling of being overwhelmed with the situation. There is a sense of desperation in some individuals when they feel they have no control and will behave with desperate or destructive impulses. This has also been used for animals that have been trapped or have been injured. Cherry Plum allows us to release the fear and surrender to trust the individuals helping us.
Lastly, Red Clover is included to reduce panic and hysteria and fear that others are going to harm them. Red clover has the ability to help when there is emotionally charged family or workplace drama situations. It helps us to steady our thoughts and remain rational despite the surrounding chaos.
The combinations in Distress Remedy can be enhanced when used with Lavender Essential oil. Although Distress Remedy is formulated to be taken internally it can also work when diffused with the essential oil of Lavender or applied to the skin. To make this topical formula take two squirts of Distress Remedy and add 10 drops of Lavender Essential oil and put into a roll-on dispenser. You can then apply this to the wrists, sternum or the bottoms of the feet (especially effective for young children). This can be applied every ten minutes until a sense of calm has been achieved.
Sometimes one can’t think about being happy or calm. Having a care giver diffuse uplifting or calming oils can help raise a person’s vibrations and allow healing to take place physically and emotionally. In the case of Alzheimer patients one could use a timed diffuser with water and the essential oils of Lavender and Pink Grapefruit. Pink Grapefruit can be quite uplifting while the Lavender is calming.
The American Medical Association (AMA) states 80 percent of all health problems are stress related, and even the conservative Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that 85 percent of all diseases appear to have an emotional element. If this is so, doesn’t it make sense to try to shift these negative vibrations to a more positive level?

Herbal eGram #771 Feeling Grateful
Good Morning!
On Wednesday (less than one week ago) I was involved in a head-on collision. My car had to be towed away. The main injury I attained was a bruised sternum (which is the most common injury when one is wearing a seatbelt). In a flash I realized the car coming at me was not going to stop in time. She hit me full on while I was making a left turn and my car continued its path right into a telephone pole.
I immediately began using the trauma techniques I teach. The first thing is to disburse pent up hormones that the adrenal glands put out in the flight/fight response. If these are not disbursed they can add to the inflammation that is going on in the body. I did short breaths of “in through the nose and out through the mouth”. When you breathe out of the mouth you use a forcing breath and shape your mouth like an O. This helps to not only get rid of some of the inflammatory hormones but to bring oxygen into the brain.
The next thing I did: I had made an essential oil cream for my Tai Chi instructor who is dealing with a psoriasis issue. I dug it out of my bag and began applying the lotion to my sternum. After applying the lotion I placed my hands one on top of the other on top of my sternum and sent healing energy to the injury. I repeated these methods until and while the Emergency attendant arrived and took my blood pressure. Which he commented wasn’t bad for being in a car accident only minutes before.
The major thing to focus on is to remain calm and breathe! The next is to think of what do I have near me that will facilitate healing. If I didn’t have the lotion for my instructor I would have used the Silver gel that I always keep in my car in case of emergencies and the Distress Remedy. These are in a little pouch right next to the driver seat. I recommend everyone have several of these around. One set should be in your brief case/purse; your home and your office. Silver gel is a huge support to the immune system which will immediately go into effect when you are in a trauma situation. Distress Remedy is also important for reducing trauma both physically and emotionally.
The lotion had a base of aloe, comfrey infusion, Silver gel, coconut oil with essential oils of Lavender and Recover blend. When I got home I added Distress Remedy and a small amount of Nature’s Fresh enzyme spray. The Distress Remedy was to help me deal with the emotional impact that occurs when the frenzy of an accident is over and your brain begins to process the reality of what you went through and what you have to deal with due to the accident. Nature’s Fresh enzyme spray breaks up proteins. So it will assist in calming inflammation, minimize (or eliminate) bruising and take down swelling.
One of the other things I did was taught to me by Steven Horne of Tree of Light. When injury occurs the lymphatic system floods the area with molecules designed to facilitate healing. The problem is, it isn’t very efficient in removing the fluid from the area. This causes congestion and will form a swollen area of congested fluid—a bump. So, touching the area gently and moving your hand quickly up and down (for me it was up and down the sternum) or across the injury. You basically do this until you simply are too tired to continue. If you can hang on for about 5 minute intervals it will really facilitate circulation.
It’s sort of like the traffic jam that occurred right after my accident. There were cars that were travelling that couldn’t because vehicles were now in the way. The EMS units were there; the police were there and the fire department was there. They each had their job to do! In the meantime there were the bystanders. Now that you picture the congestion you might be able to understand the necessity of keeping things moving. Someone had to re-direct the traffic so as not to make the congestion worse and so that the rest of the emergency squad could do their job.
The tow trucks had to get in there and remove the obstructions (my car; her car). The Fire Department swept the streets of glass. The police had to take statements of what happened and re-direct traffic. We are very grateful to all of these people for performing their job in an efficient manner and get things back to normal. The people who attended me were amazing. So considerate and kind and level headed. They didn’t try to force me to do anything. I was lucid and they could tell that I was not in a panic and could decide for myself what I felt best. So when I said I did not want an ambulance, nor did I want to be taken to an emergency care facility; they understood. I did have to sign a waiver saying that I denied an ambulance.
The fact that when the EMS guy tried to put the date as 10/3 and I corrected him stating it was 10/5 might have had a little to do with him realizing I was in full faculty and able to make decisions. During all the hubbub, I was able to call my husband and let him know what was going on and phone my daughter in law to see if she could come and get me. I was in the presence of mind (even though the pain was excruciating) to grab my bag with my car’s information and my iPad along with my purse before they began the towing procedure. I will say though as soon as my daughter in law came and got me I hugged her (gently) and cried.
Crying is also a good way to release pent up inflammatory hormones. It helps to disburse some of the cell memories. This is especially true when in the arms of someone you feel safe with and know that they care about you. Just having someone show that they care and touching you can instill some healing energy. What you must do is accept that healing touch. Do not shrug it off. Part of our humanness is compassion. Many people create a shell and don’t allow compassion in. They don’t want to appear weak. Being vulnerable is part of the human existence and allowing others to support you when you need it is a gift. Throwing a gift like that back at someone is unhealthy.
Once we got home I applied ice and took some supplements to continue dealing with calming inflammation. Relief Formula is a mild herbal remedy designed to reduce inflammation and deal with pain. I took two every 15 minutes for about two hours. I then was able to get some IF Relief. IF Relief is a formula designed to reduce oxidative stress and has pain relieving benefits. It cannot be taken quite as often as the Relief Formula so I took two every hour.
The first several hours I concentrated on doing as many of the techniques I mentioned above on my sternum. It wasn’t until a couple of days later I noticed a 5 inch long by two inch wide bruise on my hip from the seat belt that I didn’t see right after the accident. My total focus was on my sternum and ribs. It was difficult to breathe and move so that took priority. I began working on this bruise and within 24 hours it was going from purple to yellow. I think within the next 24 it should be gone. There really is no reason for bruising to occur at all if you do the stroking often enough; apply ice and use essential oils. I’ve avoided them for many years even though I do bump myself occasionally.
I am grateful for all the tools I’ve learned in my 35 years of being involved in natural health and teaching trauma techniques and remedies. I am also grateful for my Chiropractor husband and his knowledge of how muscles attach to bones and what happens when they are out of balance. I am grateful for having a daughter in law who was willing to drop everything to come to my aid; to all my relatives and friends who sent me loving energy and prayers for healing. But I am especially grateful to God for the wisdom of knowing that everything was okay and He was right by my side.
I hope your “take away” after reading this is to have some things on hand in case of emergency. It really isn’t about if, but when. If you need specific suggestions, please contact me. I love sharing and helping.

Herbal eGram #770 More Microbial than Human
Good Morning!
In a recent issue of the New York Times focusing on Gut Health, It was stated that we are more microbial than human! So little is understood about the microbiome from a medical standpoint but many scientists have known and written about it since 2007. There are many such magazines on the shelves now talking about the Microbiome and how important it is to your health. It has taken almost 10 years for this knowledge to become main-stream. In the field of natural health we have been talking about the health of the digestive system and proper elimination for over 50 years.
The article goes on to say that: “Bacteria in the gut produce vitamins and break down our food; their presence or absence has been linked to obesity, inflammatory bowel disease and the toxic side effects of prescription drugs.” So what we once thought was just the liver’s function of processing, we now know it is also the guts influence that determines how nutrients are accepted and used.
If one eats a pizza or burger but the body needs nutrients supplied by dark green leafy vegetables, it won’t get the nutrients needed for cellular repair. The more often one eats unhealthy food the more harm done at a cell level. This effect may not be realized until years later, but it is always realized. The good news is that the gut is resilient when helped in time. We are learning more and more about how to help create “tight junctions” and undo leaky gut. We are finding out what the gut needs for a healthy environment.
In the NY Times article it also states: “Given the extent to which bacteria are now understood to influence human physiology, it is hardly surprising that scientists have turned their attention to how bacteria might affect the brain.” You can read the complete article. We’ve known about the Gut/Brain connection for many decades. I first wrote about it 15 years ago! There are more Serotonin receptor sites in the gut than there are in the brain. We don’t necessarily have to cross the blood brain barrier to encourage better mood. We know about “gut feelings”.
When something doesn’t feel right, it is generally our gut that warns us. The emotions of: wrongness, insecurity, disgust, overwhelmed, unfair, vulnerability and more all come from our gut. We often suppress these feelings and get a stomach ache or diarrhea. Some become constipated because they are holding on to the feelings instead of eliminating them. One solution is to move the energy by using essential oils or flower essences.
Release It flower essence is a wonderful combination of flower energy that is preserved in glycerin and has no smell. The energy of these flowers (or spirit of the flower) helps us vibrationally move from stuck to active. Flower essences are similar to homeopathic medicine that is taken under the tongue. The energy of Nature’s Sunshine flower essences are gentle yet powerful. One often follows Release It with either Find Strength or Be Courageous flower essence. These remedies help you to move through fear.
Since the gut can control our mood, what we eat and our health, I consider it an important topic to learn about. I recommend you learn more about how you can protect your gut health. Almost all articles talk about taking probiotics. A variety of probiotics that can help correct the gut environment is best. I love the Probiotic Eleven supplement in helping maintain and regain gut balance. When the gut environment has been compromised as when one goes through chemotherapy, taking the supplement Elevated Eleven is a better choice. This product has 3 times the amount of probiotics than the average supplement.
Prebiotics are food for the probiotic such as Inulin. Inulin is a type of water-soluble prebiotic fiber found in onions, leeks, garlic, asparagus, Jerusalem artichoke and many other foods. Prebiotics are indigestible to you, but they help nourish beneficial bacteria in your body. Dr. Mercola has a wonderful article about Inulin. It helps to maintain viability for the probiotics while they are in capsule form waiting to be ingested.
Years ago I told people that probiotics should be taken away from meals because that was what the authorities recommended. We now know that it is best to take them when the stomach acid is at its lowest and that is generally after a meal. For freshness it is recommended that the probiotics be refrigerated or frozen; occasionally, when you go on a trip that isn’t possible. So, it is better to lose a few bacteria to the warmth than not take at all. Bring them with you and take them after meals. The health of the gut may keep you from getting sick while you are away.
Essential oils can also help keep the gut healthy. Most essential oils are anti-bacterial and antifungal. Some are also antiviral. Keeping the bad bacteria out can help the gut build its defenses and protect you better. Here’s a recipe for an airplane spray: in a 2 ounce spray bottle add purified water to almost the shoulder (where it begins to round); add 10 drops Distress Remedy, 10 drops of Lemon and 5 drops of Peppermint. Shake and spray the head rest, drop down table, arm rests and anywhere else you may touch. I like to also spray my legs as this helps keep circulation going and can reduce swelling. You can also spray your wrists to encourage circulation.
