Herbal eGram #707 Anxiety vs anxious
Good Morning!
Being anxious about something is a normal response to stress. We can be anxious about being in a dark and unfamiliar place and this is helpful because it keeps us alert to danger. It is part of the “fight/flight” response system. Our blood pressure rises and our circulation increases in an effort to be ready for what we have to do. When we were out fighting bears we depended on this response to increase our alertness and readiness. The increased blood flow makes it so we can burst into action.
This heightened sense of alertness uses up nutrients that often are not present in our daily diet. Nutrients are used at an increased rate when our defenses are pumped. Our muscles contract and are ready to defend us. Using supplements to help our body get the nutrition it needs is a proactive approach to dealing with stress and the responses our body has when dealing with it.
After the incident is over we need to take deep breaths to help stabilize and calm our body. For example: You’re driving along and another driver does something unexpected; you immediately feel your body tense and you may get angry. Often you shout something at the driver because you need to disperse the hormones initiated by the stress response. It actually is good to let out a scream but then you need to help calm your body because you have to pay attention to your present driving experience. You should not dwell on what just happened because it could result in an accident that you may be the cause of due to your inattention. So, take some deep breaths which will help further disperse the stress hormones and pay attention to relaxing your body.
The thinking process is halted when we are in this heightened anxious state. In order to regain perspective and logic you need to take deep breaths and calm the body. This will once again allow the brain the oxygen it needs to think logically and perform tasks needed for driving safely. I like to have on hand some calming essential oils to disperse the negative experience and get me back on track. I particularly like the combination of Lavender and Pink Grapefruit. I use 5-7 drops of each in a roll-on with aloe vera gel as a base. Rubbing this solution on to the pulse points of the wrist can help you calm and uplift your mood.
B vitamins are water soluble and washed out of the body especially during times of stress. Therefore it is important to get a good supply of these to help our body bounce back from stressful situations. Continued stress causes harm on the nervous system and Adrenal glands as well as the Thyroid. I love the product Nutri Calm as it can feed these glands and the nervous system with a continuous supply of nutrients needed to help repair. It’s a wonderful source of B vitamins along with C to help replenish lost nutrients and it includes calming herbs like Valerian, Licorice Root, Hops and Passion Flower.
Anxiety disorders include a plethora of concerns: OCD, Panic Attacks, PTSD, Social Anxiety, Test Anxiety, for just a sampling; some may also include phobias. If you or someone you care about deals with anxiety on a daily basis, it would be good for you to supplement with B vitamins and look into some herbal and nutritional support. Heightened anxiety causes the body to be inflamed and inflammation is the root cause of many diseases.
AnxiousLess is a product developed to help the body during situational anxiety. If a person deals with OCD, they continuously deal with anxiety either perceived or real. There may be no logical reason for anxiety and yet the person perceives it as real. Medications may dull the response but they don’t help the body heal. Natural supplements, eating a healthy diet that doesn’t inflame the body (no sugar or alcohol) and staying away from foods that might trigger inflammation such as wheat or dairy will go a long way in reducing the anxiety symptoms.
Anxiety symptoms may include: sweating, racing heart with palpitations, pain in the chest or head, thoughts that freeze action and more. Thoughts of a traumatic event that occurred in the past, Night terrors; obsessing over what people might think, or hurting yourself in some way; feeling stuck, and/or out of control are all serious signs that anxiety is taking over and you need to reach out to get help. There is nothing to be ashamed of! The earlier you get help the faster your recovery will be. There are many wonderful techniques and tools available to help people with Anxiety disorders.
The most important thing is that you regain your sense of control and being in touch with your needs. As humans we all have needs and the most important one is that of being loved. We all want to feel appreciated. Needs are more than just food, roof over our head and being comfortable. Feelings are needs as well. We need to feel wanted and cared about. Freezing our feelings so that we won’t feel pain is not the answer. As hard as it might be, you need to express your needs because nobody can tell what is going on inside you! Even those who love you cannot know what you are thinking or feeling unless you clue us in. Talk it, write it or sing it, but let someone know that you need help in dealing with your feelings.
Another basic human feeling is that of wanting to help others. Maybe the person you confide in doesn’t have the ability to help you but they know someone who can. Give them permission to help you by sharing your pain with someone who can reach you in ways the “friend” couldn’t. We all have abilities and talents and they aren’t the same gifts in everyone. Someone out there will be able to connect with you and help you. Hope is the feeling we can all share with those we care about.

Herbal eGram #706 Stressed out!
Good Morning!
What is your biggest stress? Is it family, health, work, finances or some emotional trauma you are trying to deal with? Sometimes we have multiple things going on such as deadlines, health issues and relationships that cause us stress.
Often times it isn’t the actual incident where most of our stress comes from, but the repetitive thinking about how the outcome may be, or how we would have/should have responded differently. These repetitive thoughts create a huge strain on our nervous system. B-Vitamins are water soluble which means they get used up and they are not stored in our body. Taking a supplement that has a complete range of B-Vitamins is very important in helping us deal with stress and not causing undue harm to our nervous system which then drags down our immune system.
If we could get control over the thoughts that keep popping up, most of how stress affects us would be minimized. Passion flower is an herb that helps calm that area of the brain that keeps those repetitive thoughts spinning. It also is famous for helping with sleep disorders. We all know how important getting a good night’s sleep is!
Psycho-Neuro Immunology is the study of how our thoughts and feelings affect the nervous and immune systems of the body. Stressful thinking can actually make your immune system weak making you susceptible to any viral conditions such as cold or flu that may be floating around. There are techniques that you can do to move this energy out so that the immune system doesn’t get negatively impacted by your stressful thinking. One of the ones I use is called Neuro Emotional Technique.
I also use Flower Essences that energetically help the body move negative energy that can impact a person’s health. Having helpers available when these stressful situations arise can help you get a jump on the potential impact minimizing the harm they cause. Some of the situations are acute such as the death of a loved one (may even be a pet).
Having Distress Remedy on hand for the family is going to lessen the impact and help get one through the grieving process with less impact on one’s health. Unresolved grief where people haven’t allowed themselves to move through the grieving process can be instrumental in lung disorders, sinus infections and even allergy responses.
Also taking a B-complex every day (and maybe even 3 times a day) can lessen the effect of acute or chronic stress. Our nervous system needs a variety of B vitamins to cope with everyday stress. I love the product Nutri Calm as it has a full range of B vitamins and it has vitamin C to help utilized the B vitamins as well as some wonderful calming herbs like Passion Flower and Valerian. Usually people take one tablet three times a day with meals. You’ll know you are taking enough if your urine comes out bright yellow.
My next Herbal Hour (April 4th) is all about anxiety and the herbs and supplements that can come to the rescue. Being anxious can be just an occasional thing for some people and getting control over it would improve our lives measurable. For others it can almost paralyze us so that we freeze and nothing gets done. This anxiety may be accompanied by heart palpitations and even panic attacks. Getting control over this type anxiety can actually save one’s life or life expectancy.
Learn to identify when you are stressed out and look to some natural solutions to help your body heal and deal with the ramifications of Stress.

Herbal eGram #705 Fat-free
Good Morning!
For years we heard that fat was bad and that our food choices should include fat free. I can remember having to squeeze the orange dot to make margarine yellow. We were told by the “experts” that animal fats were bad and vegetable fats were the way to go. Unfortunately the manufacturers made those vegetable oils from non-food ingredients! They hydrogenated them and processed them in ways our body couldn’t recognize as edible. Our livers were totally confused at what to do with this fake food so it stored it. All this was done for the sake of profit.
There are basically only 3 tastes that we enjoy: sweet, creamy (fat) and salty. When you take away fat you reduce flavor. Manufacturers know this so they increase either salt or sugar to make up for the flavor. Chemically enhancing food to make it taste good has been ongoing for decades and for a while our bodies were able to ignore it. However, we now know that the fat free craze has been the stepping stone for poor health due to bad food.
Usually they increase sugar in the form of fructose because it is so cheap to make. High Fructose corn syrup is made from Genetically Modified corn and carries with it the problems associated with GM food which interferes with a healthy gut. Sugar and fructose destroy good gut bacteria. Often it contributes to the growth of yeast but also may be a contributing factor in the growth of bad bacteria. Tooth decay is just the tip of the ice burg. Saliva carries bad bacteria throughout the gut and back into the mouth. I’ve seen people with bad breath clear up that halitosis by changing their diet and adding healthy probiotics to their daily routine.
Since manufacturers have traded sugar for HFCS, diagnosis of Diabetes has sky- rocketed and cancer (which feeds on sugar/fructose) has gone through the roof. The pancreas wears out trying to keep insulin and glycogen in balance. The receptor sites take up the HFCS but the cell doesn’t bring it in for energy combustion. It contributes to inflammation and raises the risk for heart disease and other inflammatory conditions.
Fat (the right kind) is important for health. Butter made from the milk of grass fed cows is rich in Omega fats; so are avocados, coconut and many other fat foods like nuts. Fat supports healthy skin and cell structure. It is very satisfying and burns longer as a fuel for energy than sugar. Fat is also important for brain health. Become a “fat head”. We seem to get quite a bit of Omega 6 and 9 in our diet and the best source of Omega 3 is cold water fish like salmon and krill.
Krill are what whales eat by the mouthful. Schools of krill can be seen from outer space they are so plentiful. Krill are like shrimp in so much as they have the antioxidant astaxanthin naturally occurring. This is the carotenoid that turns them pink. NSP’s Krill with K2 is on sale and it is an excellent fat. I like to switch off occasionally going from Omega 3 EPA to DHA and then to Krill to give my body a variety of fats needed.
Getting the right kinds of fat to support brain and heart health is important but it is also important to have the liver be able to break these foods down into effective nutrients that our cells can use. I think it is extremely important to assist digestion by taking enzymes. My favorite enzyme supplement for people over the age of 50 is Food Enzymes. It is also my favorite for those who have had their gall bladder removed or are on medications that may bog down the liver’s ability to make bile salts.
Food Enzymes also assist the pancreas and creates the proper environment in the stomach to break down proteins into usable amino acids for building muscle. Enzymes are active ingredients that are lost in the processing of most food. Live and cultured foods do have enzymes in them and therefore it is encouraged to consume these on a regular basis. However, it is also important to support the health of the liver and pancreas by consuming an enzyme supplement. I’ve taken enzymes for over 30 years and feel that in order to have good digestion they are the most important supplement you can take.

Herbal eGram #704 debunking the PSA
Good Morning!
Most cases of prostate cancer do not occur until after men turn 50, but in recent years there has been a steady rise in the percentage of men in their 30s and 40s with both prostate problems and prostate cancer, primarily as a result of poor diet and increasing environmental pollution. There are some specific foods that support prostate health such as those containing zinc like raw pumpkin seeds. These are also considered by experts to be anti-inflammatory. Chewing a few handfuls of these each morning is a good way to support healthy prostate function. Spinach and Shrimp have a fair amount.
Oysters have the highest amount of zinc. I can’t see anyone eating these on a daily basis and they may also be full of mercury or other heavy metals. So, your safest bet is pumpkin seeds daily. Toxicity is a real problem to weakening the prostate. Our environment is full of toxins: the food we eat is laden with pesticides; the air we breathe and water we drink need to be filtered. Chemicals surround us and our detoxification pathways are greatly challenged. Many men are on medications by the time they are 50 and this further taxes the detoxifying organs such as the liver and kidneys. Correcting poor eating and establishing better elimination would be a big step in preventing any disease but also prostate conditions.
The gold standard of testing for men is the PSA. Many experts believe this a useless test for prostate cancer determination. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is now planning on recommending a "D" rating for PSA testing, meaning that "there is moderate or high certainty that the service has no net benefit or that the harms outweigh the benefits." A review of studies has shown that the PSA blood test yields "small or no reduction" in prostate cancer deaths. What should men do when they want to know the health of their prostate? What preventative measures should be taken prior to the age of 50? And what can older men do to support prostate health?
According to the American Cancer Society: "There can be different reasons for an elevated PSA level, including prostate cancer, benign prostate enlargement, inflammation, infection, age, and race," all factors that make PSA test results confusing, leading to potential for unnecessary treatment and suffering when tests are elevated. Getting a PSA test reduces your lifetime risk of dying from prostate cancer from three percent to just 2.4 percent, so the difference is negligible.
The PSA is a basis for some very extreme protocols: prostate removal and the recommendations of prostate biopsy. A prostate biopsy involves inserting fine needles into the prostate gland. But specialists have begun to worry about a recent, significant increase in the risk of complications from the procedure. In particular, they are concerned about hard-to-treat bloodstream infections that can require weeks of treatment. Over the past decade, the rate of hospital admissions in Ontario, Canada, for serious infections caused by prostate biopsy increased four-fold.
Men over 70 have a 50/50 chance of developing an enlarged prostate, known as benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). This is not the equivalent of prostate cancer. However, you do need to address this issue, and unfortunately, the conventional route includes drugs. It's important to know that some of these drugs actually carry a warning label that if you have benign prostate hyperplasia, the drug may increase your cancer risk, and/or may promote a much more aggressive form of cancer.
So, if drugs are not the answer than what? There are many natural remedies that a man should start to do in his early 50’s or even before to slow the progression of prostate swelling. The prostate normally will enlarge during the aging process. Keeping it healthy with proper nutrients and limiting its exposure to toxins and irritants can go a long way in keeping it healthy even through it is enlarged. Drinking half your body weight in ounces of water daily is important in keeping the bladder flushed. If the urine is condensed it creates a good environment for infection and bacteria to reside.
Keeping the colon working well is also important. It is recommended that a healthy individual have 2-3 bowel eliminations daily with well-formed and easy to pass stools. Water is an important nutrient necessary for bowel elimination along with taking in fiber foods such as vegetables and fruit. The prostate gland is close in proximity to the rectum and if the bowel is toxic some of those toxins will leach into the prostate.
Walking and swimming are good forms of exercise that help to increase circulation. Deep breathing is good to remove toxins and getting a good supply of oxygen into the body. Kegel exercises can strengthen the pelvic wall and support healthy male functions. Standing to urinate is important as it positions the bladder correctly for proper emptying. After urinating do several kegel exercises to help eliminate urine more fully.
There is research that backs up the need for optimum vitamin D levels. Some suggest that the levels slightly higher than considered healthy (70-100 ng/ml) may be optimal for cancer prevention. There have been more than 700 studies that show low levels of vitamin D to be a contributing factor in all cancer. There has yet to be any study showing problems with taking too much vitamin D when it is taken properly.
Whatever the age of the man you love, make sure that they get this information on how to maintain health of this very important gland. Men, start taking charge now of your health. Pick one of the suggestions made in this e-news and then make it a habit. Then pick another. Keep picking until you feel you are making progress. Your health is a daily responsibility—do not ignore or it will let you know it needs attention.

Herbal eGram #703 Are you DONE with winter?
Good Morning!
This weekend we went to our 11th Annual Neighborhood Cabin Fever party. Here in the Midwest we have a tendency to hibernate in the winter and don’t get to mingle with our neighbors as we do in the summer. So, one of our neighbors decided they would host a get together every February. We bring appetizers and they provide soup and salad and many contribute to the dessert table. We start at 3:30 and often the fun doesn’t stop until 9pm.
Since it is March, most people are done with winter. It helps when we get sunshine but often it is overcast and dreary. We’ve had a particularly cold winter this year and it makes you want to just curl up and read a good book. Winter is a good time to catch up on one’s reading; take some online classes or doing that long put off project you thought would be a good “winter” task.
Inactivity can lead to depression so it is important to force oneself to get out and do some activities. Up until a few years ago my husband and I enjoyed skiing and (he) snowboarding. But, being in our 70s now the falling is more dangerous than when one is young. So, now we read and watch TV. I am always taking some course or class because it is what I love to do. Keeping the mind sharp is as important as keeping the body strong.
Deep breathing exercises help to move lymphatics and getting oxygen into the body is important. Most people are shallow breathers which has a tendency to increase blood pressure. Try taking long deep breaths with your aim at counting to 10 on the inhale and 10 on the exhale. You might only be able to get to 5 or 6 in the beginning. Notice if your upper chest is moving. If that is the case you are not using your lungs to their capacity. Put your hand just below the rib cage when you breathe. This is what should be moving as this is the diaphragm.
Most people have rigid diaphragms and cannot breathe deep. Stress will contribute to the diaphragm freezing up. Massage across just under the rib cage several times. Using a few drops of the essential oil of Lavender with some aloe vera gel will also help relax the diaphragm. When this area of the body is rigid it contributes to a hiatal hernia making digestion very difficult. So, relaxing this area will also help you digest better.
Drinking water during the winter is especially important when you are indoors for long periods of time. Heat can be very drying to the skin and mucus membranes. I recommend you aim at drinking half your body weight in ounces of water daily. Try drinking an ounce every 15 minutes and that way the bladder doesn’t fill up but the cells can get hydrated.
Being home bound whether you are sick or just not able to get out can make many people anxious. You can be bored easily so make sure you have a list of activities that you want to do when the occasion arises. Sometime when you are sick the best activity is to rest and drink liquids. If you do have to take time off because you are sick make sure that you are also taking supplements that support your immune system. I like Olive Leaf extract because you can take it hourly for any viral infection that you may be hit with. I also love NSP’s Silver Shield. I take it by the tablespoonful on an hourly basis. I also like sipping on Liquid Chlorophyll in water.
I recently listened to an interview about depression I think you might enjoy:
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2015/03/01/side-effects-antidepressants.aspx Dr. Cass is very knowledgeable about natural methods and is in favor of stepping down medications with herbal supplements. As I was listening to her it was almost like she was in my head. Many of the suggestions she made are ones I make to my clients. It was so wonderful to hear an MD making those suggestions. I hope more doctors join her bandwagon. I know it is difficult for them because they get pressured by the AMA and the Pharmaceutical industry. It is gratifying to hear that there are some brave souls out there who know the advantages of natural healing.
Keep healthy; Spring is on its way!

Herbal eGram #702 Heart Mind
Good Morning!
February is “Heart Healthy Month”. You hear a lot about exercise and eating right to support heart health but many heart attacks are due to a “broken heart”. You don’t hear about the emotions that may contribute to a weakened heart. Sometimes you hear about people dying of a broken heart. We associate the heart with love but what happens when the people we love die or betray us in some way?
Trust is like a bank account. We add to it when promises made are kept and when someone doesn’t keep those promises, we feel betrayed. In order to regain trust one must keep adding to that “promise kept” bank account until you feel safe enough to trust again. It is an emotional defense strategy. If a person is betrayed often enough they become “hard-hearted”. They try to create a shell around their emotions and keep people at a distance so they don’t get hurt again. This strategy can be good for only a short time.
If the walled up person becomes too deep in this defense strategy they can’t feel love, passion, joy and all the other emotions that involve putting oneself out there. When you are secure in these emotions you don’t care what others think. You are totally in the moment. These emotions raise our spirits or energy. Peace and calm nurture our soul…sort of like renewing one’s battery. If you wall yourself up against emotion even peace and calm are difficult to attain.
This is where flower essences shine. These are liquids that are prepared in a vibrational way to achieve emotional healing. When someone has their trust eroded and they want to have a relationship and know that in order to have a healthy relationship one has to trust, the essence of Open Heart is very helpful. I’ve had many clients use this remedy to help them restore the ability to give and receive love. When the heart is rigid it is not healthy.
We most definitely want to give nutritional support to help our hearts be strong so that when we are hit with a loss of someone we care about, the hurt doesn’t damage the heart. Some of the common heart supports are Omega 3 as the heart needs good oil. CoQ10 is also important to help with oxygenation. When someone is on a cholesterol medication it robs the heart of CoQ10 so supplementation is a must when using a statin drug.
Hawthorn berries have been used for centuries to strengthen the heart. Olive Leaf is wonderful for stabilizing blood pressure and is a component of Blood Pressurex. I love Olive Leaf for a variety of things. It is beneficial in fighting viral infections such as cold, flu, ear infections etc. It can be taken daily to support health. The combination I love best is Cardio Assurance. This product was designed to support healthy homocysteine levels; which is a huge contributing factor to heart disease.
The heart is a vibrational muscle and therefore it is sensitive not only to emotions but also to sound. Did a loud noise ever startle you? A clap of thunder will sometimes jolt you and it is your heart that begins to beat faster. It also is your heart that stimulates excitement. Your pulse quickens and that increased blood flow along with raised blood pressure is the result of your body gearing up to defend itself. It is a natural response.
The problem is when we sustain that stressful state and the blood pressure never regains normal that can be very harmful for the heart. Sustained high blood pressure can damage blood vessels and the heart. Taking some heart healthy supplements can help strengthen the heart and allow it to be more tolerant of stress.
Eating fresh veggies and fruits are helpful along with wild caught salmon for its Omega 3. Did you know that grass fed beef also is high in Omega 3? Same thing with butter! I love the Irish Butter, Kerrygold. It comes from the milk of cows that are grass fed and it is high in healthy fat as well as hormone free. It is expensive but well worth the investment. Just as wild caught salmon is expensive compared to farm raised… it too is worth the investment. I would go as far to say that farm raised salmon is toxic. It never see algae.
When salmon are swimming in the ocean they eat algae as well as other small ocean creatures. Algae is loaded with Omega 3. So, if you want a vegetable source of this Omega fat you can take Super Algae. It is a great food addition as it has chlorella, spirulina and Algae. It is a good source of amino acids, carotenoids, vitamins and trace minerals. It is truly a super food for all systems of the body. It strengthens the liver and kidney functions of the body and is even studied as a detoxification method for removing carcinogens while increasing white blood cell count. Great for those recovering from Chemo.
Start supporting your heart health today. Decide if you want to work on emotions or nurturing with supplementation. The stress of exercise may be too much for the weak heart so make sure you are supporting your heart health before beginning a strenuous exercise routine.

Dr. Mary

Herbal eGram #701 Who do you trust?
Good Morning!
Who do you turn to for health answers? Some people believe in the media and let what they see and hear be their determining factor in health decisions. Others have doctors that they turn to for advice. And then other people will research the internet or books for answers. Some of these sources have a vested interest or a secret agenda that has nothing to do with your health but everything to do with profit. The best thing is to have several sources of information and see if they match up. Then you need to meditate or ponder what feels right to you.
The problem with having many different views of what you should do means you have to make a decision. Some people are not able to make decisions quickly. They often will go to a trusted person and say, “Tell me what to do”. When you let others choose for you then you can blame them when things don’t have the outcome you were looking for. It removes the responsibility of decision making to another and some people run their lives avoiding responsibility and blaming others.
I tend to investigate and research; compile and then pray. It is my strategy for making decisions and it has worked well. I also am conservative about making decisions. When I don’t care about the outcome and I totally trust the person making the decision for me, I remind myself that the outcome is their vision of what I wanted and I need to be okay with that.
Creating a favorable spin is what marketing is all about. The catchy phrase; the pretty label; the sexual overtones; tapping into your desire to be more confident, sexy, ageless etc. these are all ways that make you purchase a product. It has nothing to do with whether it is right for you or if it is even going to be helpful. It is all about you buying their product. Manufacturers know that most people purchase from emotions and not logic.
On the average we make about 70 decisions per day and we spend about 9 minutes making each of those decisions unless that decision is one we’ve made before. In that case it is habitual and really not considered a decision but a habit. In order to choose we have to be aware we are really making a choice. We habitually drive to known destinations (or we are guided by a GPS and it makes the decision for us). We occasionally select clothing but often it is something we’ve put together before.
Big decisions like where we will go on vacation often will occupy a considerable amount of time and effort to put together. Purchasing a home or vehicle will also involve time and effort in checking out what is available against what options we desire. Health decisions are usually based on symptoms. In other words, more people are reactive and not proactive in their health decisions. They’re too busy with other things to make a conscious effort to prevent health concerns. That’s when they will go to a doctor and have him/her make a decision about what is right. Again, it is their opinion—you can either accept it or complain about it. You can also take that advice and investigate; get another opinion.
When I was recently diagnosed with a Macular Hole I investigated what it was; what the general procedure is; what the recovery is like; how I could be proactive in preparing myself before and after the surgery and was there anything I could do to prevent it from occurring in the other eye. I searched for tips and hints (of which there were few and so I made two You Tube videos to help others from what I learned). I had a bank of herbal and natural health knowledge to draw on for support. I also asked for prayers from anyone I could that I make wise choices and all would go well.
Being an active part in your health means taking responsibility. It doesn’t mean blaming either yourself or others because blame is worthless. It means making an effort to make good choices in what you eat, drink, think and do on a daily basis. Do the best that you can and allow yourself some indulgences; just don’t make the indulgences more than what will make you healthy. I chose Nature’s Sunshine to be the company I trusted for my health supplements over 35 years ago and I have been blessed in so many ways by this association.
You may have heard or read that the FDA has cracked down on some of the big box stores in regards to the supplements they sell. If you regularly purchase your supplements from Nature’s Sunshine you know that there is nobody who is more concerned with quality than NSP. In fact, in 2013 Forbes Magazine named Nature’s Sunshine the only Multi Marketing Direct sales company as “America’s Most Trustworthy”. It was one of just four companies in the entire “pharmaceutical” category to be singled out for this honor.
You can find out more about our quality by checking out a video: http://www.naturessunshine.com/us/company/c1/product-quality/

Herbal eGram #700 Pros and Cons
Good Morning!
Sometimes when you are going through a difficult time you can’t for the life of you figure out the good. It often takes getting through it before you can look back and see how it benefitted you in ways you would never have dreamed of. Many times I look back on something I thought was difficult and it makes me laugh—does this happen to you?
Perhaps it was to meet someone who totally changed your life. Maybe it was the person you eventually shared your life with. An accidental meeting has brought many people together and the circumstances were totally unpredictable and maybe even unfavorable.
Perhaps the unsavory situation made you aware of how blessed you are in other areas. I recently saw a video about Rockefeller and how he was trying to meet a train. The horse drawing the carriage he was in threw a shoe and the driver had to stop to repair it. John D. decided to try and rush to the station only to find out the train had already left. Later that day he found out the train had fallen off the track and fell into a ravine. Had he been on that train he would have been killed.
Whatever you gain from adversity, realize that there is always something to gain from hard times. It often makes you stronger. Attitude is the game changer! If you have the attitude that “it’s okay”, it really will be okay. If you wallow in regret and sorrow then the “Silver lining” takes a lot longer to appear because you only see the dark gray cloud. Sometimes you have to ask yourself, “what am I supposed to learn from this?”
Can you remember an embarrassing situation that you, at the time, thought you’d never live down? I can think of quite a few. But, you get through it and then later you might even share it with others to laugh about. At the time of the situation though it isn’t a laughing matter and in fact you often feel anger or tears depending on how you handle things. Some people will get caught up in blame. All this does is put off what to do about it. If you blame someone else then you won’t learn the lesson the adversity was there to teach you.
I enjoy good health. As you might know, I take no drugs/medications and I am not in pain. So, when I had some failing eyesight around Thanksgiving it came as a surprise. The symptoms were very much like Macular Degeneration. I had trouble seeing in the center of my vision. I knew that right after the Holidays, I was going to make an appointment and get it checked out. I also knew that my diet is pretty good. I eat lots of antioxidant foods and take antioxidant supplements so it would be really strange if I was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration as these are some of the things recommended to do to avoid this condition.
So the beginning of January I went to an Optometrist and he put me through a battery of tests and said he wanted me to see a Retinal Specialist as he suspected I was experiencing a Macular Hole. He didn’t have the laser equipment to accurately diagnose the condition. I had never heard of a Macular Hole or Vitrectomy!
I followed up on his recommendation and did in fact have a Macular Hole. I went through the procedure of a Vitrectomy and I feel that my recovery was quite fast. My research on the internet explained that most people have to stay in a “head down” position for two to three weeks in order for the macula to heal. When my doctor said it would be about a week, I was much happier. It was quite a journey and I learned a lot.
Advancing to today and knowing that what I was experiencing was in no way predicated by anything I did or could have avoided makes me feel that I am taking pretty good care of myself. It also made me aware of how many people have the surgery (Vitrectomy) that I had, but do not have the knowledge of health I have to assist the body in healing.
As a result of this journey I created a video (actually two videos as what I had to say wouldn’t all fit on a 15 minute segment which is all You Tube allows). I worked hard and long on the video trying to put together something that would help others heal as fast as I did. It certainly isn’t top notch as it was the first time I’d done something like creating a video with home equipment. There weren’t any “sound guys” or “video guys” to help me. My main intent was to create a way to help others learn the techniques I did to facilitate healing. Some of the tips I gave would help people heal from any surgical procedure. If you have time, here is the link to the “part one”:
Vitrectomy health tips for healing faster
I again want to thank all of you who prayed and sent good wishes and cards. Your positive thinking and good will were the energy behind my quick healing.

Herbal eGram #699 Nice to see you!
Good Morning!
This commonly heard saying took new meaning for me in recent weeks. We often take for granted the gifts we have of hearing, taste, vision, smell and touch until something happens to shake up that sense of entitlement. It has been 10 days since my vitrectomy surgery and I am ever so grateful to be looking straight ahead again. My vision is clearing but I still see the bubble and until my body absorbs it, my vision will be blurry and difficult.
I was able to drive for a bit on Friday during the day and felt very good and confident about it. Sleeping through the night has been such a blessing and speaking of blessings: thank you so much for all your prayers and good thoughts! I’m sure my speedy recovery has been a success due to all those who were thinking of me. I am in the process of making a short video about natural support for people who are going through this process. I hope it can help others heal as fast.
Maintaining a face-down position is really difficult. It puts incredible strain on the neck so it is important to have options where your body changes position to keep the strain at a minimum. I learned a lot through this process and I will be sharing it through a presentation I’m in the process of preparing. I feel that part of the reason I healed fast was that my body was pretty healthy to begin with. I don’t take any medication and that was almost shocking to the doctor who did my surgery. I do take a lot of supplements which I feel help to keep my body strong.
Like many of you who have had to have a surgical procedure I was told by the patient advocate that I’d have to go off all my supplements a week before surgery. I was appalled. I knew that if I did that the chances of my recovering fast from surgery would drop. I also know that there is good reason to stop some of the supplements that might either interfere with anesthesia or contribute to bleeding. They also say those people on blood thinners need to stop them before surgery too. Aspirin is one of the worst. I never take aspirin but I do take supplements like Omega 3, Nattozimes Plus, Ginkgo and I knew I’d be stopping them.
I agreed to fax a list of my supplements to the anesthesiologist to get her okay. I broke down the herbal combinations on my list so that she would know the ingredients. I take Elderberry D3fense during the winter to keep my immune system healthy and it has Echinacea in it. I also take Skeletal Strength which has Valerian in it. To support joint health I take Everflex which has Glucosamine in it and these three she objected to.
She was fine in me taking chlorophyll, enzymes, Multi vitamin and mineral (Mega Chel), Cardio Assurance, Olive leaf extract, probiotics and my antioxidants like Thai Go and Curcumin right up to the day before surgery. I was happy about that because I felt with the anti-inflammatory herbs in my system my body would heal much faster. I was not allowed anything past midnight. I couldn’t even have water. I was grateful my surgery time was scheduled for 5:30am. (middle of the night for my angel of a daughter in law who took me).
If you want to have a successful surgery one of the things you can do is try to eat a healthy diet and take supplements to support every day health. I keep my immune system supported with specific herbs and vitamins; keep my nervous system healthy by thinking healthy thoughts; I keep my body flushed of toxins through drinking good water and having regular eliminations.
Do you know what to do on a daily basis to keep your body strong? There are some wonderful classes available to learn how the body works and how you can naturally support health. Steven Horne has been a great mentor for me and he has created a course for “The Family Herbalist”. http://modernherbalmedicine.com/lms/course/index.php?categoryid=2 Even if you don’t want to share what you know with others, it is important to know what you can do for yourself to keep healthy and vital.
There a lots of books available that can help as well: http://treelite.com/proddetail.php?prod=bk-61 The Comprehensive Guide to NSP products is a really good tool that I use all the time for a reference. Last fall Kathy Peltier did a course on getting the most out of this book. You can learn how the systems of the body work, what nutritional support they need to be healthy and daily nutrition to keep you strong. It also explains how to support a healthy balance with emotional support.
There are many things you can do to prevent disease. There are also many things you can do that keep your body strong enough to deal with stress and those injuries that tend to just pop up. I am so grateful for some of the techniques I learned through the years studying with Steven. I love sharing them. The body is energy (chi). When the energy of the body is low it takes longer to heal and our defense system is burdened. Learning some techniques to raise the level of energy in the body can be helpful in a myriad of ways.
One of the ways I helped my eye surgery was stroking to create a good flow of blood and energy to the eye. I also used visualization to help it heal. I cupped the eye and “gave” it energy. These gifts were given to us and we need to learn how to use them! Do not waste these talents. Learn what you can about the healing process of the body because you never know when it will come in handy.
While I was getting prepared for surgery the nurse tried to put a tube into my left hand for the intravenous fluids that would be necessary during surgery. She wanted to use my hand and tried but the veins wouldn’t let her and the fluid jammed causing a huge bump.
As soon as she pulled it out I requested ice. I couldn’t rub it as the other nurse was trying to run the line in my right elbow. It took her about 20 minutes to go to the cafeteria and put ice in a surgical glove and bring back to me. I left the ice on it for about 20 minutes and then had my daughter in law rub it while I elevated it. Whenever possible I would rub it a little more vigorously to create more circulation. The bump went down before I went into surgery. I continued rubbing the hand throughout the day and by the next day there was faint bruising. I believe if I had been able to apply ice immediately there would have been no bruising.
This method of stroking was one of the things I learned to do from Steven Horne. It has helped me in many ways reduce pain and swelling and avoid bruising. I also learned how to bring energy to an area to help it heal. I did this also for my eye. I held one hand over the eye; covered the hand with my other hand and visualized healing and I could feel the warmth go into my eye. Our bodies are powerful. We sometimes forget that. I learned in grade school that we were made in the image and likeness of God and that all good things come from Him. Why have we lost touch?
Learn and use the materials available in these eGrams. I want to share health and the knowledge I have obtained throughout the years so that others can benefit like I have.
Yours, For The Health of It,
Dr. Mary

Herbal eGram #698 Routine
Good Morning!
We all have routines that we create: brushing teeth, haircuts, all matter of things. Many of us have a routine time to go to bed and get up. We generally have a routine about eating times. We have work and maintenance routines. Our vehicles have routines that help to keep them running smoothly. If you have a pet they need to be let out and fed at routine times throughout the day (and occasionally night). We routinely schedule entertainment and plan events to help us unwind.
It is difficult when a routine is interrupted. Snow days interrupt a parent’s work schedule but are great fun for the children. When a family member is sick; it interrupts our schedule by helping them in various ways. When we are sick our routine will be disturbed and that’s aside from the fact one isn’t feeling well.
After the routine is broken we must often try to “catch-up” on the activities that have been put aside while we were away from our routine. This can be quite stressful as there are only so many hours in a day. What time has lapsed can never be recaptured. Thinking we can “make up for lost time” is what will add stress to our already packed schedule. Most people don’t prepare to be sick or have time off except perhaps for a vacation.
Vacations are a break from our routines that we often look forward to. We often spend more time planning a vacation than we do plan on how to maintain good health. Every day we should drink half our body weight in ounces of water. We should have 2-3 eliminations per day and we should sleep around 8 hours nightly. But, occasionally there is an interruption to our routines that are not welcome. Perhaps it is an accident that affects our ability to carry on our work routine and our home life.
If you’ve ever encountered a health condition such as a broken bone, you know what I’m referring to and can have empathy with others going through a similar condition. There are many health conditions that pre-empt schedules. I am grateful that I have had a particularly healthy life and haven’t had too many breaks in my routines. I also work hard at maintaining my health.
Last week I was diagnosed with an eye condition called a Macular Hole. It isn’t Macular Degeneration which is something that deteriorates with time. It is rather a condition that occurs as one ages and the fluid around the eye shrinks. It happens in 2 percent of the people and most of them women. There isn’t a deficiency that assists in it happening. It [in the words of my doctor] is simply “bad luck”.
I will find out later today how it is going to affect my plans and routines. If you’re inclined to do so, prayers are appreciated. I’ve been doing this weekly newsletter for almost 700 weeks (give or take a few weeks due to vacations and such). I hope that if there is an interruption, it will be short.
Thanks for being a loyal reader and (in advance) your prayers.

Herbal eGram #697 The Earth is not Flat!
Good Morning!
Can you imagine what it must have been like when the theory about the earth being flat was blown out of the water? Most people believed that the earth was flat and if you sailed far enough you’d simply drop off the edge.
It must have been scary for those adventurous sailors who believed in their captains who grasped the new theory that there were new worlds to discover because the world was really round and that a good deal of it was made up of bodies of water. Sailing to new worlds and making discoveries of spices and cloth unseen in their own lands. Meeting people who had different skin, different language and ate totally different must have been so eye opening.
The theory that we have to kill germs and that they are attacking us, is soon to be archaic just like the “flat earth” theory. In the 60 years we’ve gone from antibiotics being the cure all to them hardly effective at all. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), two million American adults and children become infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria each year, and at least 23,000 of them die as a direct result.
First of all, agriculture accounts for about 80 percent of all antibiotics used in the US, so it's really a primary source of antibiotic exposure. Second, it is the continuous use of low dose antibiotics that really allows the bacteria to survive and become increasingly hardy and drug resistant.
What we’re seeing is the evolution of bacteria—and we’ve catalyzed that evolution. As it turns out, the use of antibiotics in agriculture breeds these hardy bacteria very efficiently. Over time, microorganisms have learned to teach each other how to outsmart the best pharmaceutical drugs we have to offer, and they are winning the battle.
Many experts have issued strong warnings, saying that we are quickly reverting back to the pre-antibiotic age when some of the most important advances in modern medicine – intensive care, organ transplants, care for premature babies, and surgeries – will no longer be possible.
The use of antibiotics where there is no proof of efficacy is standard. We know that antibiotics do no good for ear infections, fungal and yeast conditions and yet they are still being recommended. Natural medicine has many wonderful and effective antifungal and antibacterial herbs that can fight off infection, boost immune function and not create an imbalance in gut flora.
One of the products I use daily is Silver Shield. This non-toxic and very effective liquid has proven effective against MRSA, Malaria, Staph infections, yeast overgrowth and a whole host of other infections that are not helped by the use of antibiotics. The new method of nano-particle aqua sol silver is shown to leave the body within 24 hours so there is no concern about the liver storing it. These minute particles can flow into the blood cell and actually work on microbes that live there such as Lyme’s disease.
There is a formula when it comes to creating balance: The strength of the host versus the virulence of the condition and the energy to mount a defense. It takes energy to fight infection and it won’t come from sugar. Some of the food we eat actually contributes to lowering the immune response. The gut flora is a very important part of our immune system and we are finding out that foods that are genetically modified can interfere with the biofilm that coats the gut. We are also seeing the conditions of anxiety related to gut imbalance. The increase of allergies and respiratory conditions are being associated with gut imbalance.
Correcting the imbalance is a multi-faceted program because there are many contributing factors. Starting with drinking half your body weight in ounces of water each day to improve digestive factors is a healthy beginning. Taking enzymes with each meal to encourage better digestion and assimilation will make it so the nutrients from food and supplements get where they are needed.
Many people confuse probiotics with enzymes. The enzyme action is one that breaks down food and mixes the molecules with the needed nutrients that are depleted. You should start with healthy and well-structured food such as organic for best bioavailability without adding more chemicals to your body. Enzymes should be taken during a meal to support digestion. Probiotics need to rebalance the small and large intestine and so they should be taken away from meals. I take Food Enzymes with my meals but when I feel congested I will take Proactazyme in between meals.
Often when your respiratory system is fighting a cold, mucus will thicken. When you take an enzyme that is plant based such as Proactazyme, it helps to break down the proteins that are in the mucus making it easier for the immune system to identify the harmful microbes and attack them.
I generally take my Probiotics (I like to switch off between Probiotic Eleven and Bifidophilus) first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. When I am fighting an infection, I will often take some before bed as well. If you know you have a yeast imbalance you should take two twice a day and eliminate sugar. Sugar feeds yeast and some believe it feeds cancer.
So, you can go on believing in the germ theory or you can grasp the new thinking that if you keep your body strong it can resist many of the conditions out there. I like to subscribe to health rather than disease.
