Herbal eGram #910 The god of Fungi
Good Morning,
Because it is so good for the immune system, Reishi mushrooms have been nicknamed, The god of Fungi. It is amazing at supporting the immune system by way of its ability to upregulate or down regulate. In other words, if you have an auto immune condition, you can take Reishi and it will help calm inflammation; signal repair messages to the brain to heal the gut and if you need to increase immune response, it will do that too.
It has 400 different bioactive compounds reported to have a number of potential effects including modification of the immune system, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-diabetic, and anti-oxidative. These all are very important factors that support immune health.
This fungus could be a great tool to add to your arsenal to protect against all viruses including Coronavirus. Bird flu, common flu, swine flu etc. all have in common that they are viruses. The immune system can identify it and deal with it only if it is strong and active. Keeping your immune system up involves eating the right food, getting sleep, managing stress, breathing deeply and taking immune supporting supplements and using essential oils.
Vaccines contain some very toxic material: adjuvants such as mercury or aluminum; fetal cell tissue; and more. For a full list click on the word adjuvants and you will find a list that includes many toxins injected into our body when we receive a vaccine. Those who promote vaccines say that they are necessary to activate the immune response to the specific condition we want to deter.
However, it is the immune system that must intern, recognize the irritant and create antibodies to code and create recognition to further insult of the condition. This process is to initiate the innate immune system and hopefully code the adaptive immune response with titers. These titers are signals that when the immune system is challenged with the condition it will recognize it and mount a defense. This is theory and often doesn’t work when vaccines are used. It does happen when the immune system is initiated with the actual virus naturally and the immune system is strong.
If the immune system is bogged down by being challenged with too many irritants at the same time, it often becomes overwhelmed. When I was a child, we had maybe 5 vaccines and they were all done individually. Now, there are so many vaccines the CDC wants us to have, they have to combine (sometimes as many as 5 in 1). This is a list from birth to 18 https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/hcp/imz/child-adolescent.html#vaccines-schedule that is recommended by the CDC. Can you imagine how overwhelmed the immune system is of a fully vaccinated person? Nobody would naturally be exposed to that many conditions at the same time! What makes them think that the body can handle all of these. You might think that somewhere this has been tested for safety but the truth of the matter is, no testing has been done. We are the guinea pigs! Is it no wonder that we rank 47 in a list of healthy countries?
Initiating your own immune response to viral infections is what many Functional Medical doctors are now advocating. The same message Naturopaths have been promoting for 50 years. Keeping your immune system strong is the prime factor in avoiding disease.
Reishi mushrooms are one way of supporting a healthy immune response. Many mushrooms are loaded with B vitamins, trace minerals and antioxidants. But, you can’t expect the supplement to do it all. You need good lifestyle practices with supplements as the cherry on top.
I recently came back from South America. Traveling there was quite the ordeal. The airplane was cramped and small so it made it difficult to walk around and get my usual exercise during flight. The food was awful. I did try to keep hydrated and took Silver before I left but 15 hours of flying and not being able to carry liquids severely hampered my usual techniques in supporting immune health. I did use some essential oils and silver gel several times.
After the grueling flight we took a bus to the ship (about another hour or so) and then we were lined up to have our temperatures taken (their idea of making sure nobody is sick) before boarding. So, approximately 30 hours with no appreciable sleep or good food. We unpacked and headed for the buffet (which was more like a cafeteria—people dishing out food) to get a “decent” meal. We got to sleep about 10pm and at about 3am I woke with extreme cramping and nausea. After vomiting and diarrhea for 4 hours I finally remembered my “First Aid Kit” and took out my Activated Charcoal and Slippery Elm. Took two capsules of each and within a half hour I was feeling much better and continued to do so as the day went on.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t timely enough for us to go to our scheduled 8:15 am tour. But as the day progressed, I felt better and better and was able to go to dinner. I always take several things with me as emergency supplements and I was very glad I remembered them. If I had gone to the medical clinic on board they would have given me all kinds of stuff I didn’t want such as, antibiotics (which are contraindicated for virus conditions) and perhaps electrolytes. Not to mention the hefty bill (some people were telling us they paid about $800 to receive minimum care).
I take on a regular basis, Elderberry D3fense to support my immune system. My husband takes My-Immune Defense. This has several forms of mushrooms including Reishi to support immune health. We don’t believe in getting vaccines especially for the flu. We are both in mid to upper 70s in age and we have incredible bounce back ability. We both feel that making sure our body has what it needs to keep us healthy is important. We also feel that if we do 80% right, doing the 20% not right, balances out.
Please consider supporting your immune health by eating right, sleeping well, exercising and moving your body and taking supporting supplements that have been scientifically proven and tested for the best quality available. Be kind to yourself and those around you as attitude and purpose are especially important for good health.

Herbal eGram #909 Let it Go!
Good Morning,
This popular song was from Frozen and it is very catchy. However, the song has nothing to do with the topic of forgiveness, and that is what we really need to do to find love. If you are holding back in a relationship because you don’t want to be hurt again, you can’t fully love someone. To love is to risk being vulnerable.
“He who is devoid of the power to forgive, is devoid of the power to love.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. Forgiveness is not being a doormat and allowing someone to abuse you. If you are being harmed in any way, you need to step away from the situation; get help and take charge of your life. You need to develop good self esteem and understand your value. You deserve to be loved and that doesn’t include abuse.
Learning to forgive can start with forgiving the guy who cuts you off as if you aren’t there in plain sight. It can be forgiving yourself for forgetting something. In fact, forgiving yourself is the first step to loving. You have to love yourself before you can share that love with someone else. We all do things we aren’t proud of, some more serious than others. The first thing is that you are aware that what you have done is something that should never be done again. That’s called remorse. It isn’t a state of mind you want to live in. Remorse is a recognition and then you move on to forgiveness.
This is taken from a lovely website: https://cmic.info/stories/the-power-of-love-and-forgiveness-2/ (You can skip this part if anything Christian offends you.) He said to me: “So many are imprisoned because they won’t accept themselves. So many are gifted and talented, but they won’t express themselves because they fear rejection. They fear others. They fear what people will think. I want to love my people, but they hold me at arms’ length and won’t let me really love them because they have been hurt by others. They fear I will reject them because of the weaknesses they have, but I will never reject them. Tell them I love them. Ask them to stop trying so hard to be acceptable to me and to realize I accept them where and how they are. Tell them I don’t want a perfect performance from them. I want them to love me and to let me love them.”
Believing you are capable of doing better and striving to be better is what enriches you as a person and boosts your self-esteem. Striving to be the best version of yourself is a goal. We often fall short but we are still aiming for the goal. I think of a toddler who takes their first steps. How often do they fall and yet they get up and try again until one day they are running and very proud of themselves at that.
The problem for many of us is that sometimes we can choose to forgive another, but still in our heart of hearts, the anger or resentment lingers. However, it is in fact possible to forgive and truly let go of past disappointments, hurts, or blatant acts of abuse. Although at times this may seem implausible, forgiveness is a teachable and learnable skill that can dramatically improve with practice over time.
Open Heart is a flower essence that is designed to help those who have been hurt and have closed off their heart in order to not feel hurt again. It is a self defense mechanism but it is self-defeating if we remain stuck in this frozen feeling. Open Heart helps you move the stuck energy of unforgiveness in order to feel love again. This has helped many people heal from abuse, whether it is childhood abuse, or trauma of being used by someone for their own personal gain.
Often times children are not protected by those who are there specifically in their life for that protection. Sometimes the abuse comes from people who were raised that way and don’t know there are kinder, more loving ways to raise children. Sometimes trauma enters a home and fear takes over. Fear is often a “jerk-knee” response to situations and takes time to heal from. Flower Essences help to move this stuck energy so that we can heal from emotional trauma. The one I use the most is Distress Remedy because it helps us listen to our thinking brain that is trying to tell our emotional brain, “Everything will be all right”.
Depression is often the result of being in the state of unforgiveness for a long period of time. We can’t seem to find our way out of a situation. Drug dependency is another “way out” that doesn’t really work. Alcoholism is another route. The act of forgiveness is one of the 12 steps that help people rise out of the grip of dependency. Step 9 is about making amends. The spiritual principle involved is that of forgiveness, not only from others but forgiveness of self, which can bring healing to both parties.
Totally not easy! But if you can put it in perspective, well worth it. You will be the big winner in the end. Believing there is a big picture and someone orchestrating it, helps. As Shakespeare said: “All the world’s a stage”… And we each must play our part. Sometime we don’t get to pick the part but we can pick the way we want to interpret it.

Herbal eGram #908 Avoidance Behavior
Good Morning,
Have you ever put something off and said, “I’ll do it later”? Sometimes you can’t do what comes up immediately because it isn’t the time or, you don’t have the time. Maybe you think of something that has to be done and you’re driving your car. Think about when it would be a good time to do what you thought of and put a mental pin in it with a proposed date to accomplish the task. As soon as you can, put a note in your calendar, or on your task list for the day you think you will be able to work on it.
Sometimes you need more information. You can still attach a time/date to when you will be able to get the information to complete the task. You can even make a list of “on Hold” projects and why they are there. The idea is that the act of doing something creates a mental tick off your list.
Procrastination is putting everything off and it is usually based in fear. It is your “modus operandi”. Fear of failure. Fear you’ll disappoint. Fear it isn’t good enough, etc. Finding tools that help you push through putting things off is quite individualized. You need to figure out what is stopping you.
Thoughts come before feelings. What are you thinking about that is creating the fear that leads to the behavior of procrastination? Is that thought true? If you are supposing something to be true, generally it isn’t. Our thoughts are very often false. Develop “Accurate Thinking”.
Napoleon Hill described Accurate Thinking; “Accurate thought involves two fundamentals. First, you must separate facts from mere information. Second, you must separate facts into two classes-the important and the unimportant. Only by doing so can you think clearly and accurately.” Have you ever had someone tell you something that was totally their opinion with no facts to back it up? And then, it turns out that the facts were contrary to what they said? Well, that’s inaccurate thinking because the thought isn’t based on fact, it’s based on someone else’s opinion which may not even be based on fact. You can get all emotionally caught up in arguing with this person or, you can wait until they discover the error.
If you are going to get upset about something make sure you have the facts first. In these times we don’t have a scarcity of information but we do have a scarcity of fact. Most of what we read and hear are spun by those it serves for you to hear it. Think of all the things we’ve been told that turned out to be untrue! I could go on and on about “fats are bad”; “salt is bad”, “vaccines are safe”, “Mercury in fillings are safe” etc.
When you are deciding to make a decision on something, make sure it feels right to you based on what you know, and not what others think. You can never please everyone. The most important person to please is yourself. Is what you are going to do make sense to you? Many things are put on “the back burner” because we don’t understand it or, don’t feel it is right.
Maybe you have to learn to say “no”. People who like to please others often have a problem saying no. If in the back of your head you know you don’t have time to do what another person is asking, say No. Some responses can be: “There isn’t time in my schedule to do that.” Or, “Please ask someone else to do that.” If you put it off by saying, “Let me get back with you on that”, you are adding to your procrastination list unless you are saying it because you have to check your schedule and are really willing to do the task.
But, if the reason is due to fear of “not doing it right”, this can be a pattern. When you put something off, put a “come back to” date on it. Move it in your calendar. If you keep moving something and it isn’t because you are waiting for something or someone so you can complete the task, make a decision to either drop it, or do it. Keeping something on your “to do” list contributes to stress. It ruminates in our mind and uses up energy. This contributes to our “stress load”.
Rephrasing your internal dialogue is one of the steps to move on from procrastination. Be kind and forgiving in your self-talk. Many procrastinators feel that they have to “whip themselves into shape”. This is unproductive self-talk. Learning to be the cheer leader in your head is what you really need. You need encouragement that you have the skills to complete whatever task is in front of you in a timely and efficient manner.
Be Courageous flower essence remedy helps the person who struggles with self-doubt, discouragement and procrastination. Taking this remedy three times a day will help you get rid of these negative and harmful beliefs. Create a statement that cheers you on and helps move energy from discouragement to productivity. When you fall back into the habit of negative thinking, take a deep breath. Grab your Be Courageous and drop some into your mouth and say, “I can do this!”

Herbal eGram #907 Shining a Light
Good Morning,
There is an old joke about a guy looking for his car keys that he dropped. Its dark and he happens to be under a street light. A neighbor comes along and asks if he needs help and he replies, yes, I’m looking for my car keys that I dropped. So, after a period of time the neighbor asks, “Where exactly were you when you dropped your keys”? And they guy says, “Over there, but the light is better here”! Seems dumb, but sometimes are we not looking for the answers in the wrong place?
Sometimes we are misdirected by a person, or even a doctor, who may have good intentions, but the answers they provide aren’t the ones we are looking for. Shining a light may represent knowledge. There is plenty of knowledge available now with, “Dr. Google”. But is it what we really need? Is it factual? Knowledge can seem factual or relevant but is it only consensus, or real fact? When I give a person information I like to back it up with several resources that have come to the same conclusion and not one resource that several people are quoting. It also must feel right in their gut and heart.
We’ve been lied to (with the best intentions) that: fats are bad; vaccines are safe; better living through chemistry and now, how great it will be when we get 5G! I’m sure you can quote several other times when we’ve been sold a “bill of goods” that profits someone else—“What does your doctor smoke?” In reflection, we see that this was false. Some fats are bad, but not all! Vaccines come with a risk. And look what chemistry has brought us: Glyphosate, GMOs, fake food, etc.
If you want to be healthy, both in mind and body, you need to shine a light on the information you are getting. Learn to investigate the side effects, options and other opinions. Then check your own trusting and if it feels right—do it. Many drugs cover up symptoms, but is that what you want? Do you want to become like a zombie, mindlessly walking through life without feeling?
Depression is good. It helps you appreciate what is good in your life. It is when you are imbalanced that depression can be bad. Living in negative thoughts and behavior contributes to disease.
Recently, I had the pleasure of seeing my granddaughter, Sarah, perform in Guys and Dolls (a 1950 production). During the play, Adelaide sings about a cold. She has been in a relationship for many years and marriage keeps being put on the back burner. Please enjoy this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RX-eFkGdJNM
Psychosomatic illnesses are real manifestations that occur from negative thinking. They go away when we change our thinking. How incredible is that, and how powerful is our thoughts?! We need to be aware of what we are thinking and when they seem dark and dreary, have tools on hand that can snap us out of it,
Natural medicines help move energy and give us nutrition. This is the best way to keep us thinking good thoughts and supporting our health. Essential oils can raise our mood and so can flower essences. Supplements can boost our nutrition but they don’t take the place of healthy eating. Our basic intake should be as healthy as we can possibly afford. We need to think of our food as medicine.
Sometimes when we shine a light onto something, we see things we don’t want to see. Perhaps you have an attic or a basement that you ignore for a while and then have to pull something out of storage. Putting a light on, or flashlight on, you reveal just how neglected the area is. It may be full of cobwebs and neglected items. Sometimes searching through those items brings up a memory, or article that reminds you of a happy time and sometimes it brings up a sad time. Your interpretation on the event is what brings to light the emotion.
Maybe the memory was from a dark time in your life and you can now see the events that transpired, due to that event, and can see how it needed to happen in just that way for your present circumstance to occur. People have talked about missing a flight only to find out the horrors that flight went through. The point being, we don’t know the whole picture. I once heard it expressed as: “We see the working side of the tapestry and God sees the picture side”. Our view is pretty ugly at times and makes no sense. But, turn the tapestry of life around and voila—it’s a beautiful thing.
Shed some light on why you are depressed. Are you not grateful enough? Are your expectations unrealistic? What is your self-talk like? Are you a good cheerleader for your challenges? We are human and therefore we learn often by our mistakes. Check that one off your list and go on. Learn by the lessons we are taught during life’s journey. Also, learn to be grateful for each day; the people in your day; the lessons taught and the joy that can be yours when you Shine a Light on your experiences.

Dr. Mary

Herbal eGram #906 Dysthymia
Good Morning,
Do you remember the last time you felt happy? How long ago was it? If it was two years or so, you may be experiencing Dysthymia. Not considered as serious as Major Depression, it is still a condition in which the body is more susceptible to colds, flu, strep and other illnesses. It takes energy to fight disease and when you are depressed, you have low energy.
We just ended the Season of Joy, did you experience it? Dysthymia is a long standing feeling of sadness or depression for two years or more. When something lasts a long time it becomes our comfort zone. Even though we don’t like the feeling; we don’t know how to rise above it, or feel differently, because there no longer is a reference point. We listen to music that keeps us in a depressed state; we watch movies that we are comfortable with and we attract people who can match our mood. Does this sound like the age group of 13-18 year old’s?
The medical community have no real answers for why a person falls into dysthymia. Some hypothesize that there have been circumstances that create a feeling of hopelessness and one just gives up. For example: if a child had been abused for years, whether physically or mentally and has seen no compassion or understanding, this could end up with a feeling of hopelessness. Maybe they received some encouragement along the way but it wasn’t enough to give them courage.
Many children feel powerless through a variety of circumstances. Perhaps they have a physical feature that is a point of teasing and the teasing really hurts but the child doesn’t feel comfortable enough to discuss it. This feeling becomes bottled up. Whenever they have a similar hurt—they fill the bottle with this hurt. Sometimes the bottle explodes in anger or destructive behavior. The actual concern is still not addressed because we are now dealing with the reactive behavior.
The child thinks less and less of themselves. The depressed feeling is so painful drugs or alcohol, or both are used just to ease the pain. Of course these aren’t solutions because the pain doesn’t really go away. Counselling may help to expose the feelings but it doesn’t seem to be enough. Using a variety of approaches may be more successful. In addition to counseling, energy medicine may be invoked to help raise the energy from the depressed state to one of acceptance and then on to happiness.
Nutrition is also important because in a depressed state the average person will not eat healthy meals that encourage healthy cells and good energy production. Doing a good detox will often help because the burden of toxins on the liver and organs of the body can contribute to the low energy. Starting gently with Liquid Chlorophyll is a good first step.
In the teen years, hormones are all over the place and taking nutrition that balances the hormones and feeds them can help offset occasional poor nutrition. Master Gland is just such a supplement. Often these hormonal changes cause acne and even boils. The blood purifiers in this formula help to clean the blood of toxins so that the body doesn’t feel forced to use the skin as a detoxifier. Drinking a good amount of chlorophyll water and using Master Gland can help a teen by feeling more confident and when you add a B complex like Nutri Calm, stress levels are much more manageable.
Stress of poor food and drink choices, lack of a good solid night’s sleep and school is plenty enough to deal with but then add an emotional concern of poor self-esteem and you have a perfect storm for depression. The EMF’s from screens are also taking a toll on the body’s energy levels. Taking Distress Remedy before school and then again putting it in the chlorophyll water for during school will help keep the nervous system calm.
Parents are often stressed themselves and don’t always catch what is going on with their children. The evening dinner used to be a time to catch up with what is happening but now it is rushed with activities and phones that make it easier to suppress feelings. Don’t let those feelings bottle up. Learn to take time for hugs and encourage conversations of what is bothering your teens. Let them know that you are there to help them.
I’ve also found that diffusing the essential oil of Pink Grapefruit will help raise the vibrations from a depressed atmosphere to a level where one can begin to see that they want to be happy. Once they feel good about themselves and their path, happiness becomes the norm. Having a spiritual connection is also very helpful.
Life can be very difficult if you don’t have a belief that “everything is going to be okay”. If you only can see the dark, how difficult it must be to know that there is sunlight. Don’t miss an opportunity to share the sunlight with someone—even if it is just your smile.
