Herbal eGram #905 Hug More!
Good Morning,
Depression affects more than 254 million people each year. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in 15-29-year-olds. Just recently my sister’s neighbor’s son committed suicide. They had 3 children and last year their daughter was killed in an auto accident—now this. Please pray for them to have strength to get through this. To bury children must be one of the hardest things to do and then to have the memory of it to last every Holiday season has to be very difficult.
We are so caught up with staying in touch with those not with us, that we ignore those who are. We see people on cell phones sitting around the dinner table at restaurants and I wonder how can they be so rude to ignore those people who are sitting right there? We need to put down our phones and pay attention to those around us. We need to tell them how much we love and respect them. We need to listen to what they have to say and support them. We need each other in a personal sense.
Personal connection is a need, not just a desire. When we hug someone, the physical touch activates pressure receptors in our body and immediately starts sending signals to our Vagus nerve. The vagus nerve reports directly to the brain. It gathers information while it wanders along its path throughout the body. It sends signals to the brain of what we need. Loving energy from another person is one of the most healing of energies. It says, “it’s okay—you are loved and appreciated”.
The Vagus nerve is the key element in our parasympathetic system which acts as a kind of safety valve when our brain or body is suddenly put under heightened stress or is overexcited. Hugs have the exact opposite effect. It makes the Vagus nerve relaxed, and this feeling is carried over all along your body through the nervous system. You start feeling calm and secure. Stress levels plummet!
When children are injured and they are given a hug, healing starts immediately. The Vagus Nerve initiates the repair response in the body. It is responsible for digestion, relaxation and repair. When we get a massage, use essential oils or flower essence therapy and especially get hugs from someone who cares, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system which calms stress and upset. It actually activates healing hormones.
A national analysis conducted by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine found that young adults in the U.S. who use social media more frequently than their peers, report higher levels of perceived social isolation. The March 2017 report was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Social isolation leads to loneliness and this leads to depression which can end in suicide.
There is also the electrical energy interference that occurs when using wifi for extended periods of time. The wifi waves of radioactivity interrupt our own energy vibrations and can contribute to a lowered immune response and adverse effects on the nervous system. There are thousands of studies proving cell phone electrical interruption and the harmful side effects of wifi.
The way people use their cell phone is another contributing factor. Most people on cell phones have their head bent down. The Vagus nerve leaves the scull at the top of the cervical spine just below the scull. When the head is not looking straight but instead bent down, there is considerable pressure on the vagus nerve. This is the posture of most teens. This posture contributes to all kinds of inflammatory conditions and is associated with depression and anxiety.
The Vagus Nerve can be activated by deep breathing. That is why you do feel better if, under stress, you can remember to take a couple of good deep diaphragmatic breaths. It actually does calm you and allow your brain to think better. Well, hugs can do even more. Sustaining a hug for 20 seconds can change how you feel about someone. The first few seconds are uncomfortable and then eventually your vibrations start to create a balanced rhythm and you feel supported and understood. We simply don’t hug long enough for the brain to send out oxytocin and get that connected feeling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0j5mygAlA0
Hoping that 2020 brings you more hugs, love and understanding.

Herbal eGram #904 Emotional Toxicity
Good Morning,
Fear, Anger and Grief are natural emotions that are often connected to our self-preservation. Often, when the circumstances around these emotions, don’t play out in the best case scenario, emotional trauma can occur.
Fear helps us define danger. It keeps us from stepping into the unknown. It connects with the Amygdala which is about self-preservation. Our instinctual brain kicks in and ramps up our heart rate and sends energy into the limbs to ready the body for fight or flight. When you experience this, the body cannot digest, rest, or heal well. So, it is not healthy to be in a chronic state of fear. When the fear is over, you can help the body get back into a relaxed state by taking deep belly breaths and shake off the energy that is in the extremities.
Anger is an emotion that protects us from harm and is part of our defense system. It ramps up our energy and pushes blood to the head. You will see flushing, sometimes sweating or teeth grinding. It unfortunately shuts off reason and the ability to think clearly. It is more about reaction than it is trying to figure out the situation. Chronic anger has shown to be a contributing factor to strokes and heart attacks. It is also an energy of condensing or tightening—think of fists clenching. This concentration of energy contributes to congestion—thickening blood; cysts, tumors and stones.
Grief is a way to handle the loss of something, or someone who we care about. When these emotions aren’t met with healthy acceptance and understanding we often will learn to stifle these normal emotions and they become toxic. Expressing grief is a need to feel connected. Hugging is a great way to move grief energy. That is why when a child feels sad it is an automatic response of a parent to hold them and let them know by soothing tones, they understand. If these needs aren’t met properly we can stifle grief and it can lead to a constant feeling of sadness.
Toxic emotions lead to physical concerns. You Can take a 45 question quiz on where you stand with emotions: https://www.dr-eva.com/pages/emotional-toxicity-questionnaire Once you know what emotions are top on the list that are causing you to be sick, you can choose some other paths to wellness. One simple way is using Flower Essence Remedies. If you have an emotional healing kit, you can move through the emotions like peeling an onion until you feel yourself being more happy than not. These remedies can be taken in conjunction with any therapy you are doing whether it is medications, supplements, talk therapy or any other emotional healing technique.
The Emotional Healing kit has Distress Remedy for trauma. It is the center of all emotions and can help us to engage the Parasympathetic Nervous system where calm and reasoning can be found. There are two remedies for Grief: one for not being able to express it and the other for constantly being in the state of grief. There are two remedies for Fear. One is when you are frozen and can’t move beyond it and the other one is when you are too easily jumping into it as a response. And finally there are two remedies for Anger: one that helps you to see the healthy side of things and respond appropriately and the other is to move stuck energy so you can find happiness again. It is helpful to have the kit so that you can have the remedy that will help you to move stuck energy. Energy often moves in waves and as you move one, another needs support.
If you have chronic physical symptoms of pain, you have an emotion that is contributing to this pain. Auto Immune conditions are 100 percent attached to some toxic emotion from the past that needs to be moved out. Flower Essence remedies are gentle, yet effective in giving you courage, raising self-esteem, feeling peaceful, energetic (but not nervous) and so many other healthy feelings. You can check each of the seven remedies out from the kit by going to: https://hartonweb.com/nsp-herbs/bornforhealth.com/
There is so much more we can do to be healthy. We only have to know how. These eGrams are meant to be shared with others so that they too can know about natural health tips and how they can improve health without toxins. People need to know that there is hope for a happier life. Share Peace, Love and Joy this Season.

Herbal eGram #903 Freeze Mode
Good Morning,
I’ve spoken about the vagus nerve and how it connects with the parasympathetic (calming) side of the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system is your “automatic” nerve response. It helps control blood pressure, heart beat, blinking, and all the other responses our body does throughout the day that keeps us alive.
There are two branches of the ANS and one is the Sympathetic side and this side is our flight/fight response. It revs up the blood pressure; takes blood away from digestion and sends it to the muscles to act on the particular danger perceived. It takes energy away from the part of the brain that has reasoning capabilities and goes into auto-drive.
If you’ve ever had a GPS tell you “You have arrived”, and you know very well you haven’t…well this too can happen in flight/fight response. If we are far enough away from reasoning capabilities, we do all kinds of things we’re later sorry we did. Doing some actions without thinking them through has gotten many of us into trouble. So, it is really important that we engage the Parasympathetic part of the ANS.
The Parasympathetic causes us to calm down and get our reasoning back. We can think better in the Parasympathetic state. This state is responsible for better digestion as well. So, practicing some techniques that help you engage the parasympathetic side of the Autonomic Nervous System is really important. You can facilitate it by taking deep diaphragmatic breaths and using some essential oils. Distress Remedy is also great for helping the calming effect so you can think better and respond with good actions.
I’ve been studying the Vagus nerve a lot because scientists are doing tons of research on this fascinating cranial nerve. It is the tenth cranial nerve and exits the scull at the base where the cervical spine begins. Therefore, it can be disrupted by posture and injury. Your eyes are meant to look forward and when you use a smart phone to text or look at movies etc. Your head is bent at an angle that interrupts the normal flow of the vagus nerve. There are many other ways this nerve is affected but too many to mention here. I mention the bent head because so many teens are doing this and it can adversely affect their health.
Another thing I just found out is that the Parasympathetic nervous system has two sides. This rather new information is from the work of Dr. Porges' and his theory on Polyvagal response. When you are stressed and can’t seem to move forward, or are in procrastinate mode, it is considered Freeze Mode. It goes by a lot of different names but Freeze gets the message across.
Freeze mode can include avoidance; procrastination; it can create a sense of guilt that makes you shift blame to anyone but yourself; it is much easier to lie in this state because you really don’t want to own up to this person. This mode can contribute to non-social behavior and includes not wanting to be touched. Being in this state shuts down our ability to make the hormone oxytocin which is often called the “Hugging” or “Love” hormone.
Obviously it is not a desired state to be in. Many things can shift this mode into the ventral side of the vagus nerve, which is where you feel good and are happy. I will be demonstrating some of these in my “Dr Mary’s Health to Home” tomorrow which is recorded and you will find on my YouTube channel. Both are linked on the Calendar portion of my website.
Essential oils can shift mood and restore the body’s ability to engage healthy Vagus nerve response. The bones behind the ears work very well as a place to dab on Lavender and shift response. You can intensify this by using Flower Essence therapy. You can also include deep breathing. The more techniques you include the faster you will get into the ventral side of the Vagus nerve and feel better.
Hugging is one of the best ways to stay in the healthy vagal response. Chest to chest hugging for approximately 20 seconds can do wonders for healing. It is known to reduce inflammatory markers, pain and depression. Some people do not like to be hugged and scientists are now finding a reason for that. These people are in Freeze mode and stress has put them there. What you can do to help that person is offer Distress Remedy and ask if you can spray some essential oils. They can choose whatever one that appeals to them because if it smells good to them, it will work!
I have found that Chiropractic adjustments are very beneficial to reset the vagus nerve because Chiropractors are specialists in nerves and what might be pinching them. Most people think of Chiropractors as spine doctors and although they are very good at this, the spine houses the nerves, and therefore they are also nerve specialists too. Getting regular Chiropractic treatment will reduce the stress on the Vagus nerve.
Don’t let yourself fall into the Freeze trap this Holiday season. Use some calming essential oils and some flower essence therapy while taking some deep breaths.

Herbal eGram #902 Don’t Worry About It!
Good Morning,
Did you ever have anyone say that to you? Worry, is a natural response and if done correctly can help you process a concern until you find a solution. Productive worry is to think about the concern and possibly write a list of things that need to be done to accomplish the task.
For example if you are going to a conference: The flight will have to be booked; the hotel reservation must be made; you will want to make sure whatever you need to have at the conference is written down so you can check it off and you will have to pack. Once you make your list, you are not allowed to think about that portion of the trip unless you are actively doing the task.
Most people will put lists like these on their phone so that they can adjust the list as more information comes in. I like written lists. I like to print my calendar so that I can check things off and feel a sense of accomplishment. If you have a way to do that in your phone, then do it. Checking things off gives you a feeling of triumph. This engages the parasympathetic nervous system and creates confidence.
Unproductive worry comes from when you ruminate over something that may happen, or has happened, with which you have no control over as far as outcome. Say, for example, something happened at work and you wish you had been better prepared so you could have a great “come back”, or handled it with a more level head. Stuff like this happens and we must learn to just let it go.
Dr. Daniel Amen is a psychiatrist and talks a lot about Neuroplasticity and creating new pathways in the brain. Discovering that you can think differently about situations is empowering. Just because your usual thing is to overthink how you should have responded and how differently it could have gone is irrelevant. You can’t change the past! Find a way to deal with it by letting go. It happened and it’s done. Take a deep breath and figure out what can be done now. He calls this “the adult in the room”.
The more you live in the now, the more you can change your behavior in responding poorly. This is what I like to call, “Focus on the bullseye”. If you want to get the dart in the center of the board, you can’t be looking behind you. You must look at the target. Figure out what is the target and focus on it. This is productive worry. Spending time thinking about things not in your control is useless and there are times when you know it is but, can’t seem to help yourself.
Habitual worry is unconscious. You need to “wake up” and recognize that what you are doing is non-productive and a waste of your valuable time and energy. There are many ways you can snap out of the habit of worry. The first of course, is to realize what you are doing. The next step is to have something in place that shifts your thinking. It can be a song, a joke or a picture of something that brings you Joy.
These tricks of shifting your thought can be placed on your phone and as soon as your realize you are ruminating, click on the thought shifter. The next step is to think of what you would rather be doing that would be productive. That’s where your list comes in. If you apply an approximate time to each task, you can look at your list and judge what you can do in the amount of time you have available.
Doing things in small increments can also give you a sense of accomplishment that boosts your self-esteem. When you make a list for a large task, like clean the garage, make sure you are specific in breaking down the task. Get rid of clutter in the corner next to the door—that way if you get started and realize there is more task than time, adjust the list. Create part one and part two. The goal is to accomplish a small task to feel like you have done something toward the finished project.
You can have as many lists as you have jobs to do. What do you honestly feel you can accomplish in the time you have allotted. Extend the time by half again. Give yourself more time than you actually feel it will take because there are always interruptions. We get phone calls and texts that can’t be set aside. We have to take a break to get water, food or go to the bathroom. If you do get done before you have down—great!
“God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I can’t change, the courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference”. This serenity prayer has been adopted by many 12 step programs because it works. If you don’t like the word “God”, then use Universe or whatever. There is a higher being and once you understand that, you can go on and let things go.
Realizing that the world does not revolve around you and that you don’t have to make every decision, will go a long way in lifting the burden of worry and ultimately, stress. Being constantly vigilant about making sure everything is going the right way is exhausting. Let it go. Relax! Take a Lavender bath and chill.
Taking big belly breaths can help relieve a lot of stress When we are in worry mode we often take shallow breaths. In order to engage the parasympathetic nervous system (the repair, relax and digest) we need to engage the vagus nerve. We can do that through a lot of ways, but deep breathing is one of the easiest and cheapest ways. So, whenever you feel yourself sinking into that worry—take a deep breath and shift your thinking. Taking a dropper of Distress Remedy helps you engage the vagus nerve as well. Remember, when you are in sympathetic (flight/fight) mode you are not able to think clearly. So, take that deep breath right now!

Herbal eGram #901The Cascade of Illness
Good Morning,
Our ideas of how disease begins may not be the whole story. Recent multiple scientific findings are confirming that disease begins in the gut. It is not true that you are what you eat, but: You are what you eat, digest, absorb and don’t eliminate. Improving gut function is optimal if you are to interrupt and reverse the cascade of illness we are now experiencing in this country in epidemic proportions.
Most Americans have compromised digestion. When we are young our body compensates for our poor food choices. Perhaps we have stomach upset, or diarrhea, but we tend to ignore it. We live stressful lives; getting little sleep and abusing our body with our dietary choices. We may even experiment with chemicals that further take their toll on our organs of digestion like our liver and pancreas. We think we are invincible and then something happens and all of a sudden we are sick.
It really isn’t all of a sudden—it has been building for a very long time. As a cell dies and is replaced by a new cell that was created with less than optimal nutrients, it joins other cells and makes for weaker tissue, which in turn, makes for weaker organs and systems. It really all comes down to not having an ample supply of building blocks to create a healthy body.
This compromised gut can’t make the right neurotransmitters because the nutrients are not available at the cell level. We try to go on like the super hero we used to be, but simply cannot. We can’t go through our day, drinking coffee (and more popular—energy drinks); eating on the go; sitting for hours in front of a computer; getting little restorative sleep and drinking alcohol and perhaps smoking or other recreational drugs. This is a recipe for disaster.
Doctors are trained to work on symptoms, which are only the result of a causal effect…want to eliminate the symptoms; work on the cause. There are 4 main components for building a healthier body and those are: Digestion, restorative sleep, optimal nutrient intake, elimination of toxic influences. If you are not actively working on all 4 of these, you are not building a healthy body. Health does not just happen. It takes work.
There are many ways to work on these four aspects of good health and what works for one person may not work for another. The big common helper is digestive enzymes to support good digestion. It goes without saying that you need to put healthy ingredients into the body. But, if you have poor digestion, even the best of nutrition will not help you create a healthy you. Most everyone past the age of 35 needs some digestive support.
We hear a lot about pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. These are the end result of a worn out pancreas. You can wait until you have disease, or you can support your pancreas now by taking enzymes. Plant enzymes are a good place to begin, especially if you are young. There are some children who have compromised gut issues that could do better by taking plant enzymes. If a child is dealing with any allergies, asthma, mood swings, or has been diagnosed with cancer—they need to build a better body with good nutrition and enzymes.
The plant based enzymes I like best are Proactazyme. For those who can’t swallow capsules, you can open them up and sprinkle the enzymes on the food, or put it into non sweetened applesauce. If the child weighs 50 pounds, they can take one opened capsule. If they weigh 25 pounds you can put the contents of the capsule in a tablespoon of applesauce and take half the serving as a day’s supply to start with and then you can up the dose until they are taking a capsule 2-3 times a day.
Adults can take the Proactazyme in between meals if they have heavy mucus. Taking two at bedtime may be helpful in eliminating morning congestion. It would also be wise to do a food diary with an elimination diet. Food sensitivities often are due to the fact the food cannot be broken down properly and has created a condition known as leaky gut. The gut needs to be repaired before the food can be eaten again. The worst offenders are grains such as wheat and corn; dairy; soy; nightshade veggies and processed foods.
When you eat foods that are not providing nutrients, the body considers them toxins. These toxins will enter the blood stream causing inflammation. The end results are diseases of inflammation like arthritis, auto immune conditions, heart disease, brain fog and dementia, muscle weakness, diabetes, and an inability to make neurotransmitters leading to all manner of mental health issues. This cascade of illnesses are all due to a compromised digestive system as the root cause.
If you are 45, or older, you need to take a digestive product with Betaine Hydrochloride. If you don’t have the proper pH in the stomach, many things occur. First of all this acid is what helps to close the valve that stops food from coming back up the esophagus. If the esophagus has already been damaged, you may have to start with the Proactazyme and an herb called slippery elm that helps with tissue repair until you can safely take the HCl. The need for Betaine Hydrochloride is basic for good digestion and many people cannot make enough. You need this acid to break down protein into amino acids to create neurotransmitters like Serotonin, Dopamine and Cortisol.
Betaine HCl is also needed as your first line of defense. This acid pH destroys harmful microbes as soon as they reach the gut. It kills parasites on contact and helps our immune system not have to work so hard. Betaine HCl also breaks down calcium and other minerals to support bone health and all the other functions calcium supports.
So, do yourself a favor and take Food Enzymes with each meal and start building a healthier you.

Herbal eGram #900 Ashwagandha
Good Morning,
This plant is a powerhouse for strength and helping one adapt to all kinds of stress. Adaptogenics help the body deal with changes in weather; time changes (like we in Michigan just experienced); not sleeping well, and the demands of every day life. My husband and I have been taking one in the morning and one with our evening meal and we noticed better energy levels. I’ve notice being able to sleep through the night. This is quite the blessing! I used to think I needed to get up to go to the bathroom, but it really is the fact that I wasn’t sleeping deep enough. Now I can even remember my dreams.
Ashwagandha means “smells like a horse” which not only pertains to its smell, but the endurance of horses. It’s also called “Indian ginseng”. The root is used in herbal medicine. Generally, the second year is what is harvested and whenever roots are used, cleaning is the issue. Many manufacturers allow some dirt but not Nature’s Sunshine. You also want to make sure that there is plenty of air flow when drying as to not encourage mold.
The ashwagandha that NSP uses comes from a family owned farm in South America that has been growing organic ashwagandha for years. They actually support a whole community with their business. It is responsibly harvested. This is really important when you are using the roots of a plant. If you don’t replant to replace what you take, the plant can become extinct or endangered. This is what has happened to Goldenseal. I’m very pleased that Nature’s Sunshine cares about the environment along with the quality of the herbs they supply us with.
When you know the farmer who feeds you, you have a relationship and this bonding encourages trust. When you are eating food there is an energy in that food from the planting to the growing and right to the harvesting and all the steps in between. This energy is taken up in our body and helps us raise our energy levels as well. This energy was shown to us by Dr. Masaru Emoto. In his experiments with water and how water reacted to words, music and even attention (or lack thereof). By holding your glass of water and saying “Thank You”, you can change it from being just a glass of water into something amazingly healing.
Perhaps this is where the “blessing before eating” all came into play. Thanking God and the farmers who grew the food; thanking the person who prepared the food can all add to the nutritional quality of that food.
When you give someone a hug, you can actually help them heal with your energy. In the video linked about it shows how the blood can change from being clumped together into easy flowing blood cells that don’t clog up the blood vessels. Hugs are important tools in healing, along with flower essences and essential oils. These are all energy medicines that can be used on a daily basis that create no harm when used properly. Give someone you care about a big hug and send them loving thoughts when you do.
During the upcoming Holiday Season we will have many opportunities to share Love and Healing with those we care about. Make sure you spread hope and healing. There are many ways you can do that. You can make an essential oil gift, or you can give someone a bottle of Distress Remedy in their Christmas Stocking. Be sure to print out what this can do for them and have them taste it. Be sure to take yours daily, so you can cope with the stress of the Season. I love the Holidays, but they are stressful.
Make sure you are taking an adaptogen like Ashwagandha so you don’t get sick during the days ahead. Getting proper sleep can go a long way when dealing with stressful days. Having the energy to get your shopping, cooking and cleaning done will be a big bonus but having the energy to enjoy your guests is an even bigger one!
The Holidays are not always happy for some people. Ashwagandha has been noted for helping lift peoples mood as well as their energy. Some people carry negative energies about them and it can really suck you dry—taking your Ashwagandha will help you: Recognize, Respond, Recover, Restore and Regenerate!
Perhaps give someone you care about a bottle of Ashwagandha with that Distress Remedy and they might have a healthier and happier New Year.

Herbal eGram #899 Chemo Brain
Good Morning,
People who go through chemo are aware of certain side effects like, loosing hair, being nauseous, low energy, lack of appetite but one thing that isn’t known that well is, Brain Fog. If you Google Chemo Brain, you will see many references to it. It occurs in up to 50% of the people who go through chemo treatment.
When we consider how many people are affected by cancer, I think it is important to understand this side effect. Having a sense of humor with your loved one is really important. In most cases the effect only lasts while they are having treatment and it slowly dissipates as the chemicals leave the body. If someone asks the same question over and over, try to have patience and compassion. Make a joke and say, “that answer hasn’t changed since you asked a few minutes ago” and try to chuckle and say something about it being a temporary situation.
Like it isn’t bad enough that you are dealing with a deadly disease, you are subject to depression, anxiety, anger and forgetfulness due to the treatment. So, forgetfulness isn’t the only way it affects the brain. It really depends on where in the brain the medicine is killing off cells. The same thing can happen with radiation and other medicines. It is all about inflammation and the biggest thing you can do is to cut down the inflammation.
DHA is a special Omega that protects the brain. Usually it is found in combination with EPA rich foods like fish oil. Eating farm raised salmon doesn’t give you adequate amounts of Omega oil. The Omega oil in the salmon comes from the algae it eats and farm raised salmon aren’t given algae. Since our oceans carry a large amount of toxins, one should be especially careful about where the source of the fish oil originates. NSP does very stringent testing for heavy metals and toxins and allows none in the fish oil sold. The recommendations vary but if one is going through Chemo it would be wise to take the minimum dose which is 3 capsules per day and work up from there.
If something you are doing doesn’t show results within two weeks—change what you are doing. You should see clearer thinking and less anxiety/depression. If you get up to 9 per day and see no difference then switch to something else. Or, you might need to add another element. Dehydration contributes to poor thinking; also, lack of sleep; stress; negative thinking; lack of exercise and fresh air; wifi and radio waves interrupt energy levels; there are a myriad of toxins we consume either through eating, breathing or thinking—these factors all affect our health. The protocol is do more good than bad!
Create a plan for the week and implement good choices around food, exercise, relationships, sleep and meditation. Whole body mindfulness is something we have to work on. Many of us aren’t taught to pay attention to our body. We are actually taught the opposite—ignore and push through! Paying attention to what our body is telling us about what makes us hurt and doing something about it will go a long way in experiencing better health. When we eat something and it doesn’t agree with us, we should ask why? If you keep a food diary and every time you eat that food you don’t feel good—stop eating that food.
Being healthy is mostly doing things that make sense. If you hit your thumb with a hammer, you wouldn’t continue to hit your thumb. You’d pay attention. But, somehow we lost this logic when it comes to other health matters. We eat junk and then wonder why we get sick. Food is our fuel. You wouldn’t put sugar in your gas tank. We think of things as treats that are really unhealthy for us. It is all bad programming from the food industry and the sooner we recognize that—the healthier we will be.
“Smoking calms the nerves”. “Microwaves are harmless”. “Round up kills weeds”…they don’t tell you it also kills you. The person who takes the manufacturer’s statement of safety without further investigation is fooling themselves. Industry is not in business for your health; it is in business for profit and in most cases, in spite of your health. We are now seeing the Pharmaceutical industry falling from its high horse as lawsuit after lawsuit lay claim to their profits. Don’t look in hindsight. Be mindful now of what your choices are claiming.
There are many scientists, functional medical doctors and learned people out there who are giving out honest and helpful information about how you can make better health choices and feel better now. Google: Chris Beat Cancer; Hope4Cancer.com; The Truth About Cancer (book and series); and much more. Once you get into the natural cancer realm, all kinds of research will become available. Pick something that feels right to you and immerse yourself. Follow the protocol and ignore the frightened comments of those who love you. They’ve just been brainwashed into believing the lies. Listen to your gut—pray on it and do what you feel is right.
Each person going through cancer has the right to decide what is best for them. They shouldn’t be frightened into following a protocol that doesn’t make sense to them. You are not going to die tomorrow. Take your time and decide if you can take the steps to heal naturally. Find someone who will support you on your path. Get into a community of like minded people (even if it is by DVD). Thousands have overcome cancer naturally and seen their tumors shrink. Find a wholistic practitioner who can help you determine if your chosen path is working.
There are some experts that say Chemotherapy will be outlawed in about 10 years because of its devastation. Yes, in some cases it kills cancer. Chris Wark of “Chris Beat Cancer” beat his cancer, with natural methods 15 years ago and there are thousands like him. Cancer does not have to mean a death sentence and it doesn’t have to mean endless suffering. Most people on natural remedies feel energized and better. Find a functional doctor that will work with you.
The thing is, “You can’t keep doing what you are doing and expect different results”. Something has to change.
Yours, For The Health Of It,

Herbal eGram #898 Amazing Beauty
Good Morning,
I love this time of the year when the trees have lost their chlorophyll and are showing their true colors of gold, red, orange and mixtures of each. It is especially wonderful when the sun is shining on them. These colors are the beta carotenes of the leaves. It reminds us that we too should be eating the rainbow of colors to keep healthy.
The cool days are great for cleaning up after summer and harvesting those last few plants or veggies. I’ve been preserving veggies and making salves from my herbs. I’ve had some fun this year experimenting with (new to me) techniques like doing oil infusions and making oxymels for cough syrups. I love growing herbs and this year my Rosemary was huge so I brought it in. We’ll see how that goes. I bring in my hibiscus each year and it usually sheds all of its leaves and then around Christmas new growth appears. What plants or bulbs do you bring in?
For some people Autumn is a reminder that winter will soon be upon us; for others, the Holidays are right around the corner. Some people make a big deal of Halloween and others, not so much. Sugar consumption in this country is over the top. We have out of control blood sugar levels and yet we love our sweets. Stevia is a sweetener that is beneficial for blood sugar but it is tough to convert in recipes. I look forward to someone doing a cookbook that gives recipes for Monk Fruit sweetener as I think this is a great way to calm that sweet tooth.
Healthwise, this time of year, may mean cold and flu season if you have a weak immune system. There are many things you can do to make sure you “weather” this time of year: get good sleep; drink plenty of water; exercise and eat a balanced diet of veggies and fruits along with some healthy proteins and fats. This time of the year is great for soups and I love making bone broth as my base. It is really simple in my Instant Pot. Besides the ability to get lots of veggies in, it is a great fast food after a hard day. I store my soup in canning jars in the fridge.
One of the important things you can do is supplement. Vitamin D3 is one of the supplements that can help keep depression away along with many other supports like immune, structural and nervous system. I usually tell my clients to get tested and aim for 80-100nl mg score. Vitamin D3 is one of the safest supplements and the most widely researched of all vitamins. It is really a hormone that facilitates many functions in the body.
A good multi-vitamin and mineral supplement with a full complement of B vitamins is a basic that even most MDs now recommend. Unfortunately, they recommend things like Centrum (which is nothing but chemicals). You want a whole food supplement that includes herbs, like Super Supplemental. Some people need added minerals and taking a liquid mineral supplement has really helped people who are depleted from surgeries or chemo. I like Mineral Chi Tonic for this because it really raises the energy bar!
Chlorophyll liquid is a great way to keep the blood clean and to oxygenate. Many people add this to water and it keeps the energy levels nice and steady all day long. You can even add a splash of lemon or lime. I like it by itself. The minty flavor can help keep me thinking clearly. Its especially good for after lunch when most people are feeling sluggish. Some people will add a shot of Thai Go antioxidant drink with it to really kick up the energy a notch.
Attitude is huge when it comes to the Fall and Winter months. If you begin each day with a positive affirmation and some support from essential oils like Pink Grapefruit or Inspire Blend, you will find your day goes much better than if you didn’t. There are lots of studies that show positive attitude and intention can even make you healthier. One way I’ve found to stay positive is to be constantly searching for things I am grateful for. You will be amazed at how many little things you count on each day to work properly, and when they don’t how disappointed you feel. Be grateful first!
Enjoy each beautiful Autumn Day –take some deep breaths of this clean air.

Herbal eGram #897 The Wanderer
Good Morning,
The Vagus Nerve is called the wanderer because it begins at the base of the scull and splits. It then travels all over the body to create a communication system with the brain to tell the brain what our body needs. It has four key functions. The first is from the throat, lungs, heart and abdomen. This means that all the while it is traveling (signaling at the speed of light), it connects your swallowing, breathing, heart beat and rhythm and digestion.
It connects to the taste sensation in the back of the tongue distinguishing what enzymes will be necessary and how the digestive system should prepare for that food. It may even be the trigger that sets the reversal of gall bile to make you vomit when you eat or drink something that is poisonous. It provides information about swallowing and throat muscle function in speech and in singing.
In respiration this nerve helps with the diaphragm movement that bellows the lungs and helps you take deep breaths to cleans the lungs and calm the body. When working properly it can help lower blood pressure and heart rate. If overactive it can lower these to the point of passing out and even more dangerously lengthy loss of consciousness to the point of organ damage.
The main connection that has been the topic of much scientific research is the connection between the gut and the brain. Our microbiota (ecosystem in the gut) communicates with the brain through the vagus nerve. In fact, some recent study shows that Parkinson’s Disease may begin with an infection in the gut that travels through the vagus nerve up into the brain to create damage. So, with that in mind (intended pun), we might gather that Alzheimer’s Disease may also be contributed to via the vagus nerve and our gut.
Obviously, it would be wise to keep this connection free of infection and to support it the best we know how. One of the best ways to support it is through Chiropractic care due to interference known as subluxation of the cervical spine. Having balance on both sides of the neck where this nerve travels is part of what a Chiropractic doctor does when you get an adjustment. Our doctors in the clinic of Chiropractic Natural Health use specific adjustments with tools dialed to the persons ability to handle the movement. Our website where you can learn more: https://painless-chiropractor.com/
Making sure the digestive system is functioning properly is another way to keep this communication network working optimally. If you don’t have enough enzymes to break the food down into usable nutrients in a timely manner they sit in the stomach and putrefy. I take enzymes with every meal. Proactazyme is a plant based enzyme that is great for vegetarians and those with tender tummies. Food Enzymes has bile salts and can assist with the break down of fats in a more timely manner along with proteins and carbohydrates. It has enzymes as well as betaine which supports the best pH for the stomach to work in.
The microbiome is also in the small intestine where digestion continues until it can be absorbed into the blood stream. So, a multi-faceted enzyme product like those mentioned above can be very helpful in keeping infection at bay. These infections can be taken up by the Vagus nerve and create havoc in weak areas throughout the body wherever the Wanderer travels. So, we know it travels to the heart, lungs and brain but it also travels to the muscles.
If you want to learn more about this fascinating nerve communication system check this out: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/318128.php Since the pathways include every organ of the body there is some wonderful ways to improve health using essential oils behind the ears where the Vagus nerve is closest to the skin. You can affect parasympathetic (calmness) or sympathetic (stimulation) simply by the choice of oils used. I like to add Distress Remedy to the oil to create balance.
Exciting news about the use of these wonderful remedies and how it has helped people is in a new book by Jodi Cohen: Healing with Essential Oils. Pure, organic essential oils (like the ones from NSP) can support healing on a vibrational level. When you add the vibrations from the flower essences, such as Distress Remedy, you create a whole new layer of healing that is non-toxic and no risk. It either works or not. Each person is different and so the fact that there is no harm gives you the liberty to test for yourself what works. Be your own experiment on healing.
I can give you suggestions, but if you listen to your intuitive self (which is the vibrational connection to the Vagus nerve) you will know what you need. That is the excitement of working with whole plants and essential oils are the very heart of the plant where the flower essences are the spirit of the plant. The ratio is one dropper (if you squeeze the dropper top, it comes up into the dropper about half way) to two drops of oil. I like to squirt the essence into a small glass jar then drop the oils in and mix.
I’ve multiplied the recipe and then poured it into a clean small dropper bottle and that way I have about a week’s worth of dosage. One recipe for anger is: Keep Cool flower essence and Lavender essential oil. It works great to drop a few drops onto a fingertip then rub the opposing fingertip to get the mixture on both of them and then you can rub on the bone behind your ears taking deep restorative breaths. Tell me some of the combinations you are trying and what your response has been.

Herbal eGram #896 Huperzine A
Good Morning,
The plant, Chinese Club Moss, contains an alkaloid called, Huperzine A. The Chinese have been using this plant to reduce chronic inflammation in a variety of circumstances for centuries. The exciting news is our scientific community is now recognizing the value of this herb and how its constituents can help in neuroplasticity and brain communication.
Huperzine A has been shown to have no negative side effects even when taken with medications—always safe to take them separately, however. It seems as though this alkaloid is very effective in blocking the enzyme cholinesterase which breaks down a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. This neurotransmitter is instrumental in memory and cognitive health. It helps with learning and recall.
Because it supports good circulation it can benefit many parts of the body besides good brain health. The Chinese found it beneficial in relieving edema. So, if it helps with reducing swelling, one might conclude this might be a very beneficial and safe herbs to take in complex with other supports to speed the healing process when one has had a concussion in the spinal cord. These are often due to athletic injuries and car accidents.
I take Brain Protex every day to support brain health. This product has Chinese Club Moss in it along with Ginkgo Biloba and Lecithin made from organic soy. Many know about the benefits of Ginkgo but, Lecithin may be unknown to you. I also take Lecithin by itself due to its ability to make cells more flexible. Lecithin is added to chocolate because it helps make it creamy. It is an emulsifier.
Lecithin contains 4 phospholipids (basically what all cells are made of). They also activate important metabolic functions of the body. The inclusion of this ingredient is to help ginkgo become more effective in entering brain cells. Not everything passes the Blood Brain Barrier (thank goodness) and Lecithin can help drive herbs into the cells where they are needed. Lycopene and Alpha-lipoic acid are also included in this remedy for better brain health.
Huperzine A does pass quite readily through the Blood Brain Barrier to help elevate acetylcholine. The higher levels of acetylcholine not only helps protect the brain but has shown some very positive results in studies on the symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease. It has also shown that the brain tolerates continued use of this herb and keeps showing improvement. Other conditions like Myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disorder causing muscle weakness and seizures has had some positive results using this herb. (Neuropharmacology, 1991, 20(7):763-768)
Having a base of healthy fats is the primary support for a healthy brain, therefore most functional medical doctors are recommending 3-5 grams of Omega 3 EPA/DHA daily. Being a “fat head” is exactly what we want if we want a healthy brain and not succumb to the diseases of memory loss. Our brains are very much who we are. If you’ve ever had to care for someone who has memory loss, you understand what I mean when I say that. It also makes you concerned that you might also become “brain impaired” if you are a product of that person.
Understand that only 10% of what happens with your genes is actually what predicts your health. 90% depends on your lifestyle which includes sleep, diet, thinking, stress, exercise, environment etc. Of all of these, I think your attitude is the most important thing you have that controls much of what else you choose. You choose to either do what is good for you, or bad. Of course, these choices are dependent on what information you are basing these choices. Therefore, it is important to make sure the source of your information is trustworthy.
Much of our media is bought and paid for by industry that has profit in mind. Look for sources that care about health, the environment and the future of this planet in mind. Paul Harvey did a broadcast back in 1965 that I think is incredibly perceptive for his time. It was called, “If I were the Devil”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbXyTW8YdZ8&feature=youtu.be What do you think?
