Herbal eGram #881 Calendula
Good Morning,
There are two basic types of Marigold and they are really quite different in benefits. The usual marigold that is planted in most gardens is actually of the Tagetes variety. These are not used in herbal medicine as much as the calendula variety. This variety is often used to spice things up. When the petals are dried and ground they make a great imitation of saffron. They can add color and taste to rice dishes. http://www.eattheweeds.com/tag/tagetes-patula/
The color of the marigolds will often reflect the flavor nuance. The bright yellow flowers that have flat leaves taste lemony and the orange ones taste citrusy but not necessarily orange will come to mind. In salads they tend to initiate conversation but they are also being studied for their beta carotene value. Antioxidants are needed and if one wants to eat the rainbow of colors recommended, why not add flowers?
It goes without reason that if you are going to eat your flowers that they aren’t sprayed with insecticides, pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers. I use a compost tea to fertilize my garden. I will also work in organic matter from my kitchen like eggs shells, coffee grounds and scraps (not meat). I will occasionally add bone meal. I believe in enriching the soil so the root system can take up nutrients and feed the plant rather than just feeding the plants.
The other marigold is Calendula and this is the most beneficial for herbal medicine. This grows taller than the Tagetes variety. The leaf is flat and the color can be orange, yellow or cream (never red or brown). This flower is used in many cosmetics to nourish and protect the skin. It is anti-inflammatory and a UVB protectant. You can make an infusion of it with Rose petals and add Silver Shield to protect it from harmful microbes to apply to the skin as a toner every morning.
The solution I make is: Place the petals of several roses (enough to make a quarter cup when mashed down); cover the petals with boiled water (if petals float just mash them down again until the water is just covering the petals). Let steep covered for about an hour. I also added the petals of 3 Marigolds to this. After it has cooled and the hour is up strain off the liquid into a measuring cup. Add Silver Shield liquid in equal parts. (1/4 cup infusion add ¼ cup Silver Shield) then to every half cup add 18-20 drops of Rose essential oil. This should be placed in a dark glass bottle.
To make a spray for a face toner add the above liquid to a spray bottle and spray face each morning after washing it. I’ve used this toner for over 5 years and love how it smells and makes my skin feel. (If purchased, this spray can cost upwards of 50 dollars and it would have some chemical additives to it so the manufacturer can sell it according to government standards). The Silver can keep this toner bacteria free for about 3 years without refrigeration.
The addition of the calendula petals may give my skin more nutrition and help it fight cancer, UVB damage and nourish it to protect against the ravages of the environment and aging. I don’t use scrubs or soaps on my skin although I will occasionally use some Epsom salts and almond flour as an exfoliant (about 3 times a year). I feel the soaps that are out change the pH of the skin and compromises the natural immunity of the skin.
I also don’t use a lot of make up on my skin. But both my granddaughters love the makeup remover cloth by Norwex and love the way it takes off makeup. It is impregnated with silver and stays bacterial free by just rinsing thoroughly. Contact Jan St Cyr (734) 697-4074 for more information on Norwex products. I love them for cleaning without chemicals.
Dry some marigold petals. The best time to pick them is first thing in the morning when the petals are at their freshest. Pull the petals off the bloom and place them on a layer of parchment paper. Place another layer of parchment paper over the petals and put them in an area where there is air flow. You might have to place a book at each end of the parchment so that it doesn’t blow off. Depending on the humidity in the air they can be dried in a few days. Place the dried petals in a dark jar and put the lid on it and be sure to label it.
The petals can be brewed into a tea to drink or use as an eye or wound wash. Two teaspoons of dried petals to one cup boiling water. You can add lemon and honey for more flavor. Honey has some great benefits—maybe another eGram. You can also grind up a bit of the flowers to add more nutrition, color and flavor to rice dishes.
Many flowers can be used to bump up nutrition. Often they are quite inexpensive and handy. Be sure that you aren’t applying anything you wouldn’t want to eat. Stay far away from any glyphosate (Roundup). If your neighbors use it try to give them information on the harmful and cancer causing effects of this awful product.
Happy Gardening!

Herbal eGram #880 The Beautiful Healer
Good Morning,
White Peony is called “The Beautiful Healer” in Traditional Chinese Medicine. I have some growing in my yard and love the scent of it. I also have several other peony varieties but this particular one seems to be the most recognized and studied in TCM.An old Chinese proverb says that: “a woman who consumes the root of the peony every day becomes as beautiful as the Peony flower itself.”
Linden Botanicals states: The dried root without bark of P. lactiflora has been used as a medicinal herb in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It was recorded as an essential extract in the Materia Medica during the Han Dynasty (2nd century B.C.E.). The root is dug in summer or autumn from cultivated plants that are 4–5 years old and then cleaned with water.
A decoction of the dried sliced root has been used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, gout, hepatitis, dysmenorrhea, muscle cramping and spasms, and chronic fever. White Peony therapeutic uses have been the subject of recent scientific research concerning its ability to modulate the immune system.
Most people won’t go through making a decoction of the white peony root so Nature’s Sunshine has done it for us and put it in the formula Chinese Liver Balance with some balancing herbs like licorice root, Ginger, Asian Ginseng, Bitter Orange and other anti-inflammatory herbs. This Liver support formula helps to balance and gently cleanse the liver while helping it reduce toxic influences contributing to inflammation.
We have 4 eliminative channels: The colon; the urinary system, the Respiratory system and the Skin. Many women have challenges with these systems either by allergy, eating the wrong food, not drinking enough water etc and their body responds in using the menses as a 5th eliminative channel. This can contribute to heavy bleeding, cramps and irregular periods. Peony root has been used to help balance out the reason why these are symptoms in the body.
The mild analgesic property of peony root helps reduce pain while working on the cause of it. The Chinese Liver Balance product has Bupleurum as its first ingredient and this herb is considered in Traditional Chinese Medicine to be very liver protective. It is used a lot when the immune system is recognizing self as toxic such as in auto immune conditions. This herb can help clear drugs out of the liver and has a beneficial effect on the gallbladder.
When the gallbladder is working efficiently it can help balance cholesterol levels eliminating the toxic bad cholesterol from the body. Bupleurum is helpful when the body is challenged by cold and flu symptoms. TCM also uses this herb combined with licorice root for treating hepatitis.
Peony root is a blood tonic used throughout Asia and it has analgesic (pain relieving) as well as sedative properties so often used to support balancing the monthly blood flow and cycle. It has been found to be very effective when regulating the menses and relieving cramps during menses. It is recommended to take for approximately six months to a year when the menses has been irregular and painful for some time.
The Liver Balance formula is also beneficial for men who have poor circulation and to help with the urinary system. This would be supportive in protecting the prostate. It helps will all kinds of cramping particularly leg cramps and painful gout. It has herbs in it that can eliminate infection that contributes to urinary infections as well as headaches.
The Ginseng in this formula is considered anti-aging due to its antioxidant support. It has also shown liver protective qualities in reducing bad cholesterol; helping with normalizing triglyceride levels and preventing fatty liver disease. This herb is known for its ability to help the body create energy.
One of the other herbs in this formula is Bitter Orange and this has been studied quite extensively due to its ability to move stuck energy and congestion. So it is great for flatulence, abdominal pain and distension, constipation, bloating etc. It also moves energy from congestion in the chest, respiratory system improving blood movement.
The Chinese like using formulas rather than a single herb. They find formulas can be balancing to the body and correct many symptoms rather than working on one symptom at a time. When you move energy and congestion is eliminated you want to make sure that the liver is being supported so it can detoxify. Since this formula also has liver protection built in it can be a safe product to add to your daily supplement intake. Plus, we could all use a Beautiful Healer on our side.

Herbal eGram #879 Juniper
Good Morning,
Helping to move lymphatic congestion via the urinary system is one of the ways this herb can be beneficial. If you are suffering from allergies and sinusitis, you may benefit by taking this herb. Juniper can be taken in capsule form or you can make a tea out of it. There is a bit of a citrusy taste and you can increase this by adding some lemon to the tea. You only need about 5 crushed berries to create a tea.
Juniper berries contain terpinene-4-ol, which is responsible for the herb’s diuretic activity and they are rich source of chromium so it is beneficial for helping balance blood sugar. It has some studies showing it to be beneficial for digestion by stimulating digestive fluids. Do to its ability to get things moving it can help get menses on track again but it is not recommended for those women who have heavy periods due to this action. It also is not recommend for pregnant women in the early stages of pregnancy because its action of stimulating the uterus may contribute to miscarriage.
A liquid made from the berries can be used as a gargle for infections in the mouth and throat. Pour boiling water over the berries and leaves; let sit for about 10 minutes; strain and when cool enough use as a gargle. You can add a little honey if it is for a child and you are concerned about taste.
Topically Juniper can be applied to the skin by making a lotion. https://www.diynatural.com/homemade-lotion/ Pour ½ cup of purified water that has been boiled over the Juniper berries and leaves. Leave for 15 minutes then strain with fine strainer. Use this liquid as your base. I use 1 teaspoon Silver gel instead of the vitamin E as I think it keeps the lotion microbial free for longer. The tea itself is antibacterial due to the properties in Juniper. You can use this cream to help with psoriasis, disinfect scrapes and heal cuts. Some people even use it for neuralgia pain.
It may have some benefit when applying it to Herpes breakouts as it has antiviral abilities against herpes simplex virus I and II and influenza A2. So dab onto cold sores to quiet the inflammation and pain. Some have used Juniper in cream form to disinfect the skin and help with acne. You can add a few drops of Lavender oil to the cream for a soothing night cream and it can do double duty: Tissue healing as well as a sleep aid.
If you’ve ever had gin, you might have tasted juniper berries as this is the distinguishing flavor of this drink. The above mentioned tea can be put into a spray bottle with the essential oils blend of Essential Shield and used as a “sick room” spray to contain viruses and bacteria so they don’t spread to other family members. Spray bedding and room to disinfect. This is much healthier than using bleach!
It is very helpful in fighting bacterial and yeast infections. When using drugs you have to choose between the two and often taking an antibiotic will increase yeast infections. Juniper also contains some pain relieving constituents, so Juniper is a great herb to have on hand if you have bladder infections. There is some good evidence-based research that has been done on Juniper with respect to prostate inflammation, or BPH. The capsules will stay viable for up to 5 years past best used by date. So it is a great herb to put in that “Emergency First Aid” kit.
The capsules can also be used in the above mentioned recipes by opening them up. For the tea you will want to open about 5 capsules and pour the herbs into a glass or ceramic container then pour your boiling water over it. It can be made basically in a tea cup but if you are going to make a lotion with it you will want a larger container so the stick blender can fit.
I love the smell of juniper because it reminds me of Christmas. It smells clean and invigorating. Hope you enjoy all of its benefits too.

Herbal eGram #878 Cleavers
Good Morning,
Not the “Leave to Beaver” family but an annoying, yet useful herb some of us have in the garden. It’s sometimes known as the “Velcro” plant because it sticks to everything. Unlike burdock that has seed pods that seem to cling to us in the fall, this plant is bright green and the leaves seem to attach themselves to anything that comes close.
It has been used as a spring tonic in herbal medicine for ages. It is a great way to move stagnant toxins. It moves the lymphatic system to clear congestion and eliminate through the urinary system. It is gentle. Grab a bunch—well, it will grab you. Cut off the root, make sure there are not hitchhikers and put in a large bowl. Pour about two cups of boiling water over the herb and mash down with a wooden spoon. As soon as the hot water hits the stems all of the sticky-ness is gone. You want to soak this for about ½ hour. Strain off the tea and the cleavers can now be used as a potherb.
As a potherb you can chop it and add it to soups as you would parsley. You can add it to your smoothie. I chop it and put it in ice cube trays. Once frozen you can add an ice cube of it (or two) to bump up the nutrition of any smoothie recipe. You can add it to a rice dish. More recipes can be found: http://www.myhealthyhomemadelife.com/spring-foraging-5-ways-use-cleavers/
They have a pesto recipe that sounds really good. I would probably want to add just a hint of basil to it: chop fresh cleavers to make two cups; 2 large cloves of garlic; 1/3 cup pine nuts or raw walnuts; a pinch of salt and about 1/3 cup olive oil and mix. If you feel it should be a little wetter add more olive oil. This can be used as a spread with cream cheese or added to pizza as a base. It is also nice in cream sauce dishes. It has been used medicinally as a spring detox. This quote from Livestrong.com:
“Cleavers is widely used by Western herbalists to treat edema and other forms of swelling due to its stimulating effect on the lymphatic system, which is responsible for clearing extracellular waste from the body. According to Sharol Tilgner, a naturopathic doctor, cleavers exerts a beneficial action on swollen glands and cysts, although there have been no scientific studies conducted to verify this usage. Master herbalist Susan Weed recommends cleavers tincture as a treatment for post-menstrual syndrome symptoms like sore breasts and water retention, highlighting its potential benefit for edema and lymphatic stagnancy.”
You can make herbal tinctures but it does take some time and it uses alcohol. There are recipes on the internet. I am going to show how to make an herbal glycerite which I like better than tinctures as they can be given to children and recovering alcoholics without a problem. I’ll be recording how to do this on one of my Dr Mary’s Health to Home classes. These are presented every Tuesday morning at 10:30 am Live and then can be viewed either on Facebook or You Tube.
If you want a cheap and easy way to clear the lymphatics and has had no side effects (if done as directed), this may be your answer. If you aren’t interested in making your own you can simply get Lymphatic Drainage and some people like to accompany that with Kidney Drainage and add Liquid Chlorophyll as an added benefit. If you are challenged with sinusitis, otitis (ear congestion) or painful joints; you may want to try this detox for about 10 days. It couldn’t be easier to do!
Scientists have found that cleavers contains two iridoids—asperuloside and monotropein both of which have demonstrated mild laxative action in mice. Cleavers is a rich source of mineral salts and has been used as an alertative (blood cleanser) for treating skin conditions associated with toxemia. Stagnation includes congestion that would show up as swollen ankles, cysts, tender swollen nodules in the skin, boils, and rhinitis as well as inflammation of the lymph nodes. The best thing is there has been no reported side effects from using cleavers in the above mentioned ways.

Herbal eGram #877 Cyber bullying
Good Morning
The current use of cell phones and immediate access to news, creates a perfect storm of possibilities for mob mentality. One rumor can explode into a vicious attack on one’s reputation. All you need to do is click the share button and hundreds more are advised. It’s led into a new form of bullying: cyber bullying. This is where you can be faceless and nameless and create havoc and stress to one’s reputation simply by tweeting.
Being a bully or being bullied are a major concern especially amongst our young people. Protecting children from this has created an awareness and you can find info by going to: https://www.stopbullying.gov/ The reason I bring this up is that what is missing in parenting today that encourages this behavior? It is my opinion that children have lost sight of understanding that with every action there is reaction. Consequences both good and bad are real.
From the very youngest of ages we should feel protected and loved…what happens? Even the best of parents can (for whatever reason) be subject to the stress of getting carried away. Frenzy has an energy---panic has an energy. It takes such a strong sense of self to ignore this energy. Sometimes trauma occurs to interfere with ones sense of self. Living peacefully may mean not to listen to the news or look at Facebook or checking any other media source.
Teaching children to be in charge of their thoughts by the things they surround themselves with such as the movies they watch; the friends they have, and even the food they eat. Toxins can affect our moods—that means food, relationships and energy. If a child focuses on bad—that is what they will bring into their life. So, you want to focus on the good. Even small children should have goals to focus on. When they share their goals with you then you know how to help them.
This is a podcast that helps people understand the importance of ego and how it affects our energy: https://www.theanxietycoachespodcast.com/episodes/508-is-anxiety-telling-you-who-you-are Ego is subject to the thoughts you think and maybe these thoughts are not the truth. Helping children talk about the stories in their head will help you understand their mood. This goes for everyone—not just children.
You can develop better relationships with those whom you are in daily contact. Developing a better sense of self means discerning that which is true and that which isn’t. Your feelings will help you understand what is true—the truth feels good. When you are upset, it usually is because you are in a place of discernment.
The news media is a prime source for sending out messages that stir up public concern. The Fourth Estate was established as a check for the other 3 areas of government. It no longer is non-judgmental. It has been bought out; hijacked by industry. These industries have an agenda based either on power or price. Take the vaccine industry—in 2000 it was determined that measles was a non-issue anymore. What do you think that meant to the industry that had heavily invested in measles vaccines? Creating a need is the best way to make money.
Your world is that which you create. If your world is that of worry, panic and upset—you created it. There are two ways of looking at any given situation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VGXWcEpSME Wayne Dyer teaches about how you think expands and getting what you want takes thought. If you want peace and joy in your life then you have to focus on that. How does it feel, look, taste etc. If you want love in your life; you have to be love. You can’t focus on hate—you’ll never find love.
Gratitude and kindness must be taught to prevent the presence of bullying, panic and negative thinking. If you squeeze an orange—you’ll get orange juice. If someone puts tension on you –what comes out? When children swear and bully—it is from their experience. It may not have been the parents—it may have been another child or adult. It may be the movies they watch or the games they play. We are influenced by everything we come in contact with but then it is thought which makes the difference between what we accept as true and that which isn’t.
When you approve of yourself, the approval of others doesn’t matter. When you focus on Love, Gratitude and Kindness—its hard to see anything else. While in the process of being in this state you are often challenged but if you continue to concentrate on these three things you’ll see the amazement in life. If you want love to come to you, you have to be love.
Finding joy in the now is a gift of thought you can pass on to others. I love to make people aware of beauty. Years ago my husband and I used to drive together to work and while driving I’d say: Look at the beautiful flowers; look at the trees etc. and he’d chime back; “Look at that fire hydrant” as a joke. But eventually he started to spot things too and it became a journey of looking for beauty a long the way.
Wayne Dyer quote: “There is no way to Happiness, Happiness is the way”. Focus on what you want and not what you don’t want.

Herbal eGram #876 Tummy Ache
Good Morning
Often our stomach will ache when concerned. Messages exchange between the brain and intestinal system including the stomach. That is why worry produces ulcers when there isn’t enough good nutrition to heal the inflammation produced by the messengers. When we worry, our digestion slows down (unless you’re a nervous eater—then it speeds up and food becomes your comfort). Learning to listen to your body’s signals and doing something in response can go a long way to support better health.
When we get the message of fear, we should stop and think: “why am I afraid”. Is the fear valid? Is it perhaps a remembered fear from childhood? Perhaps the fear is unfounded and it has just become habit. If you learn to question your feelings about the negative emotions that have become habit, you can change fear into action. Fear often causes us to freeze or stay in a rut. Action is necessary to move that fear.
Tummy Aches in children can be a clue to something they need to talk about. Brewing a cup of peppermint tea and taking a moment to discuss what is going on while remaining open without judgement; can curb fears that could extend into adulthood. Perhaps someone said something and the story in their head isn’t what is really occurring. We create stories based on what we think is true. It is really important to have tough conversations regarding these stories to help move fear out.
Taking remedies that help move energy like: Distress Remedy can be a real blessing for youngsters. It gives them courage to express how they are feeling and for you to have the discussion with them about telling their stories. This sets them up for having these conversations with other people they care about and they can teach their friends about talking things out, instead of feeling bad or fighting. This is the biggest gift we can give a child: the power of words.
Stress can happen at all levels of life and learning some healthy tips on handling it can make life a lot easier. Giving the body good nutrition to feed their nervous system is also very important. The nervous system needs a good supply of B vitamins to help it heal and respond appropriately. My favorite B supplement is Nutri Calm. It has vitamin C to help metabolize the B vitamins plus some herbs that support the nerves. Usually adults take 3 per day. It can be crushed and put into applesauce for anyone 6 or older. It will also dissolve in water in about 10 minutes. It doesn’t taste pleasant, so adding it to food is a good idea.
For teenagers I like to add Master Gland. This combination of herbs supports the endocrine system and teens are known for their hormones raging and emotional imbalances. They can feel much calmer with this combination. The weight is dose dependent: 50-75 pounds would take 1 of each per day preferably in the morning.75-100 would take 1 of each per day in the morning and again in the afternoon (lunchtime or with snack); 100+ would take 2 of each per day in the morning and again in the afternoon (lunchtime or with snack). Usually they can start noticing the difference in about a week. I’ve seen acne go away; periods better and moods much improved.
When there is harmony in the home it is much healthier all around. Finding tools to help each other deal with the stress of life makes it easier for everyone to reach their potential in achieving whatever goals they have set. Goals should be discussed and supported. When you express your desire to do something; be something; have something with others who love you, they are much more attainable. These goals can be financial, spiritual, physical etc. A family should be a unit that supports the happiness of those in the unit. It certainly is something to strive for.
Stress in the body can be found in many areas: head, bowels, joints and anywhere there is a weakness. This tension creates pain. Question your pain—don’t just numb it.

Herbal eGram #875 Cortisol
Good Morning
When we are stressed the hormone cortisol is released from the adrenal glands. It is considered the stress hormone. Cortisol is a response to fear; part of the flight or fight reaction. The adrenal glands send out epinephrine and norepinephrine as stimulating hormones to get us ready to do battle…stand and fight or run. These are also known as adrenaline and they are countered by Cortisol.
Since adrenaline cannot be maintained due to its relationship to the heart (increasing blood pressure, heart rate and pulse) the body recognizes that maintaining these at high levels leads to heart attack or stroke, it also makes cortisol. All of these hormones are inflammatory and can create problems for any part of the body which is already inflamed.
If we were in the woods and saw a bear, these hormones would be very helpful. The unfortunate thing, as Americans we see bears everywhere! Worry is our bear. When fear strikes we should help release it by shouting, taking deep breaths, running, jumping up and down—anything to discharge the hormones released before their inflammatory response can do harm.
When we are constantly stressed, we have elevated cortisol levels. This condition gives rise to a multitude of health problems including weakening the immune system making us susceptible to any virus, bacteria or infection we come in contact with. This means stress from lack of sleep, worry, sadness, depression, anxiety, etc. It can be worsened by poor diet and lack of good nutrition.
Another thing adrenaline does is increase the force of contraction in muscles. This extra contraction can lead to cramping and spasms. My husband will often get a muscle spasm after exertion and we have the perfect answer. If you have muscle cramps or “Charlie horses” you might want to write this down: Boil some water (like for tea); Open two capsules of Safflower (this is an herb that is bright yellow) and has the ability to absorb lactic acid; pour the boiling water over the dried herb.
You may need to add a few ice cubes so you can drink it and my husband likes to add some fresh squeezed lime or lemon juice to make it taste better. The cramps will immediately cease (at least they do for him). It has gotten so that while the water is boiling and he is opening up the capsules, his body is already releasing the cramp. It truly is miraculous. You’ll want to share this with your friends!
When cortisol levels are high it will have an adverse effect on bone density by increasing acidity in the body. Calming the body and taking vitamin D supplements can actually help your body’s bone density increase. Your body is constantly building and tearing down bone. Making new bone strong takes minerals and vitamin D3. It also takes exercise in getting that nutrition into the bone matrix.
There are many techniques in managing stress. I will be discussing these in my May https://www.facebook.com/bornforhealth/ classes on face book and YouTube. We’ll be discussing Essential Oils; Flower Essences; Herbs and specific Nutritional Supports and practical tips. Hope you can join us.
Cortisol binds to receptors on the fat cells, liver and pancreas, which increases glucose levels available for muscles to use. It also temporarily inhibits other systems of the body, including digestion, growth, reproduction and the immune system. High cortisol levels can make us fat because the more stress we have, the more fat we have to have to store it! It slows down digestion and interferes with our ability to absorb nutrients.
When children are stressed it can actually interfere with the way their brain processes new information and with older people it messes with memory. So stress makes us stupid and fat! Do you need any more reasons to calm down and try not to control everything? We really have no control over most of what we worry about. You can do the best you can and let that be enough. Set your goals in motion and take some Distress Remedy and say a prayer that all goes well.
Any type of meditation will reduce anxiety and lower cortisol levels. Simply taking a few deep breaths engages the Vagus nerve which triggers a signal within your nervous system to slow heart rate, lower blood pressure, and decrease cortisol. So, take your pick: yoga; Tai Chi, Qi Gong; prayer along with deep breathing—use some lovely essential oils like Lavender or Refuge. Be mindful and set a timer to do this often throughout the day. Then drink some pure water. You’ll be amazed how much clearer your thinking is and how much more energy you have to deal with what’s next.

Herbal eGram #874 Courage
Good Morning
We define this word as being brave in spite of fear. Courage is not the lack of fear. Fear itself is very motivating. At the same time if we submerge ourselves in the fear, it can paralyze us. Moving through fear can be very difficult depending on what is happening to create the emotion of fear. If someone holds you at gun point, you have every right to be fearful. Your life may be at risk. If the gun is a water pistol—not so much.
Past fear-filled experiences can compound the issue. You may compound the event with what has happened before. Allowing yourself to release the grip of fear by thinking on how you got through the event; the people that supported you through it and the faith that you’ll be okay can all be positive factors.
Stuff happens and generally there is an element of fear due to some events. Animals will run back to the pack and shake while the pack surrounds them to encourage (notice the word) and let the frightened animal know that they are not alone. Who is your pack? Who do you count on to be there and let you know that you are not alone. For people of faith, God is.
Drawing on spiritual courage is comforting for many. It is also helpful to have someone you can be totally honest with that has no judgement. This helps you move through an experience. Therapists are trained to listen without judgement. There are essential oils that help move energy and flower essences that can energetically move us through tough emotions.
Sometimes getting out of bed in the morning takes courage. It helps to think in small increments of time and be okay “for right now”. Taking deep breaths help us move through fear. BRAVING can be summed up as the following B-stands for Boundaries. Setting boundaries means you have a clear definition of what is okay and what is not okay. Many people don’t have good boundaries and then when someone does something “not Okay”, they get angry or resentful.
Brene’ Brown, author of many books has some great ideas about how to “set the rules”. Basically, you know from past experience what pushes your buttons. Get curious about why you respond to them and maybe you can diffuse the reaction.
The R in BRAVING is for be Reliable. If you say you are going to do something, do it. If it’s a timed thing and you are running late, let the person know and next time make sure you allow enough time. Sometimes you are waiting on another person and you might have to nudge them.
The A in BRAVING is being accountable. If you’ve made a mistake—own up. Many times we lash out with blame because we are ashamed of the deed. Lashing out and blaming others just creates a “snowball” effect where the lashing produces more lashing. It is tough to be responsible. Think about it though—are any of us perfect?
The V in BRAVING is about the Vault. This is about protecting what shouldn’t be shared. In other words, gossip. The negative atmosphere of sharing gossip begs the question, “I wonder what they say about me when I’m not there?” In this day and age of instant communication without consequence this has become a huge problem leading into bullying through twitter and other social media platforms. It only causes hurt to you in the end.
The I in BRAVING is Integrity. The truer you are to yourself and what is right, the better you feel about yourself. It takes courage to have integrity. It may mean not being popular. It may be giving up the group you thought you wanted to be a part of but have found out they don’t share your values. To help with this is the flower essence, Be Courageous. It is a formula designed for those who struggle with self-worth and fear.
The N in BRAVING stands for non-judgement. This is really hard. Being okay with people who have different views is not what we are shown through media and our peers. Have the hard conversation and see that the person might have some of the same views as you and expresses them differently. When we de-humanize a person it is easier to act unkindly toward them. Be wary of grouping and setting the person aside as different. Remember that they are human too.
And lastly the G in BRAVING has to do with generosity. In the absence of clarity we jump in with a story of our own. We make up these stories based on our past experience. They are often not true. We surmise a story based on past hurts. Don’t think up a story –ask for clarity.
For example: You are sitting in the airport waiting to board your flight and these two children are running around causing all kinds of disturbance. You see that their father is just sitting there. He doesn’t seem to notice that his children are causing havoc. So, you say to him: “Excuse me sir, are those your children” (You’re ready to just blast him on his bad parenting skills.) He looks up from his blankness and seems to notice where he is and blinks a couple of times to bring you into focus and responds: “I’m sorry if they are causing a disturbance but this is the first time they’ve played since their mother died last week”.
Create a story of compassion if you can’t get clarity. Try to see beyond your own fears and feeling of “not enough”. Every time you do you build being brave. It takes courage to be the first to say, “I love you” or “would you like a hug”. Choose courage because it is worth the risk.

Herbal eGram #873 Nitrogen-an Earth Day message
Good Morning
The overuse of nitrogen based fertilizers are throwing off the natural balance of minerals and contributing to toxicity in the lakes and streams. The main ingredients in cheap fertilizers are nitrogen and phosphorus both of which are dangerous to lakes. Often we can see large foamy areas and I know its due to the run off from people fertilizing there lawns in the Spring.
We live on a lake and most people do not understand how using fertilizers on their lawn contribute to weed growth and algae bloom in the lake. We have to pay a company to cut weeds during the summer and those weeds are growing so fast due to run off fertilizers. After the weeds are cut down we will often see algae bloom. These occurrences are due to misunderstanding on how nature works by the homeowners in the area.
Using natural fertilizers with weed killer activity can answer the problems that are a growing concern according to environmentalists. WOW is just such a fertilizer and should be applied when forsythia bushes are in bloom, then again in the fall. It may be expensive but if you look at the fact you only have to apply it twice a year: Spring and Fall and you don’t have to use spot weed killers or toxins that include glyphosate, it really doesn’t cost more.
Glyphosate is a growing concern for our environment and our health. It contributes to our toxic burden in many ways. It damages the neurological system of the body affecting our nervous system (brain and nerves) contributing to such conditions as autism, Alzheimer disease, headaches, and even cancer.
Breathing in these toxins can contribute to conditions of the respiratory system weakening the bronchioles and lungs. And if we are not covering our skin it contributes to toxins entering the body through the skin. Topically it can cause skin irritation. The skin is the largest organ of the body and can both exude and absorb. When it absorbs it can go directly to the blood stream causing stress on the liver and other organs of detoxification.
If you want to be healthy, you won’t use Round-up on anything! It is deadly to animals that can have very close contact to it by both breathing it in and skin exposure. Then they track it into the home and now it is on your carpeting, floors, furniture and perhaps even your bed. The soil half-life of glyphosate is approximately 47 days (with a range of 2 to nearly200 days depending on soil type and various environmental conditions).
The reason for GMO plants is so that glyphosate can be sprayed on them and it won’t kill them. We are not genetically modified organisms and this chemical is causing havoc in our body. Buy organic whenever possible and also from farmers you know who don’t use these toxic chemicals.
Be aware of the chemicals you use and do your research. Check out the Environmental Workers Group at EWG.org and find out if you are using a dangerous chemical without your knowledge. Get informed! Keep yourself free of these toxins that are a major contributing cause of cancer. Down load the dirty douzen and the clean 15 from www.ewg.org

Herbal eGram #872 Algin
Good Morning
Removing heavy metals and toxic substances at a cell level is the topic for this month. Algae or algin are a type of sea vegetable. When the balance of microbes has been disturbed, an algae bloom can form that will choke out the oxygen and kill fish in lakes. These often form due to chemicals disturbing the balance of good microbes—sort of like antibiotics killing off all bacteria, even the good.
The type of algin I’m referring to is the beneficial type like kelp, spirulina, brown seaweed and others. These mineral rich foods can absorb and adsorb toxic chemicals to remove them from the body. Absorbing the toxins is like a sponge that can mop up the chemicals and carry them out of the body with the stool. When something adsorbs a toxin it is like a magnet that the chemicals are attracted to and will follow it out of the body during excretion.
Kelp is probably the most well known sea vegetable in this family of algin. It is a fiber that binds heavy metals and radioactive particles to it. Since one of the minerals in kelp is iodine it can protect the thyroid and breasts from radioactive iodine. If you are going to have x-rays, it is a good idea to take some kelp a few days before to protect those organs and glands that use iodine in their functions. This is also true if you’ve had any radiation treatment or nuclear testing.
In this day and age of cell phone use and wifi, it probably would be a good idea for us all to be taking in more forms of this sea vegetable. I would only use sources that have gone through heavy metal testing because our oceans and sea beds are very toxic. I remember when NSP could not get a reliable source of chickweed and all the health food stores were carrying it. I called and talked with one of the scientists in our quality control department and he said that the main source was in Russia and since the Chernobyl event they weren’t able to get any chickweed free of radiative particles.
Another well known sea vegetable is sodium alginate found in brown seaweed. It is a gelatinous substance that binds with heavy metals and other toxins for removal. It is often used as a thickener for ice cream, yogurt, cream and cheese. A new foodie technique is to make spheres of liquid to add texture to a dish. It kind of reminds me of tapioca but it is sodium alginate that creates the little balls when injected into a liquid.
Spirulina is another form of algae that is from fresh water. It has a tinge of blue-green and it is between 65-71% protein making it one of the richest vegetarian sources of protein known. Generally meat, milk and fish are the only sources of the 8 essential amino acids we can’t make in our body. It is high in GLA and omega 3 alpha-linoleic acid which is necessary for brain and nervous system health. It is also packed with B vitamins and the minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium and zinc. It has been extensively researched for its benefiting the immune system.
Super Algae has Spirulina, Klamath Lake blue green algae (which has all 22 amino acids and is rich in protein) and Chlorella (which is rich in beta carotenes). This veggie has been highly researched in Asian medicine for the treatment of cancer. It has amazing mechanisms that seem to dissolve tumors due to its CGF (chlorella growth factor). This CGF comes from its high chlorophyll content and nucleic acid. It is beneficial in wound healing (see below) and amazing at supporting good nervous system health.
Recipe: Put equal amount of Silver gel and Super Algae together to make a paste (usually ¼ teaspoon of silver gel and one capsule of Algae). Take this mixture and apply it directly to a wound and cover. It is very cooling but the healing continues right through to the cell level. Leave on for up to 8 hours and then rinse. The silver will draw out toxins and the algae helps the tissue heal. You can add a few drops of Lavender for more wound healing. If it is bleeding add an opened capsule of yarrow.
Super algae is also beneficial for enhancing antiviral activity in such conditions as Epstein Barr, Herpes, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis and such conditions of yeast overgrowth like Candida and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Since it is such a good food source it is wise to just add a few capsules to your smoothie or just swallow them to bump up your dense food intake.

Herbal eGram #871 Forgiveness
Good Morning
Recently I’ve been watching The Truth about Cancer--Asia. This video series is about a visit through 7 Asian countries with Ty Bollinger. It is amazing all the natural ways of curing cancer that we don’t know about in this country. Herbal treatments, nutrition, detoxing and emotional healing are all aspects of treating the whole person to obtain health that aren’t even touched on in this country.
Most of the oncologists here recommend the product Ensure. Here is the short list of ingredients: Water, Corn Maltodextrin, Sugar, Milk Protein Concentrate, Blend of Vegetable Oils (Canola, Corn), Soy Protein Isolate, Cocoa Powder (Processed with Alkali). Less than 0.5% of: Nonfat Milk, Magnesium Phosphate, Potassium Citrate, Cellulose Gel, Natural & Artificial Flavor, Calcium Carbonate, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Citrate, Choline Chloride, Ascorbic Acid, Cellulose Gum, Monoglycerides, Soy Lecithin; Plus dyes and preservatives.
I hope you noticed that the 2nd and 3rd ingredients are sugar. When it was discussed by one of the Asian doctors he said that it feeds cancer stem cells and is a guarantee to have a return of cancer. You can read the rest of the ingredients: https://ensure.com/nutrition-products/ensure-original Although they list that there are vitamins and minerals in it and they even throw a bit of turmeric in it—it is NOT a healthy food. Remember, medical doctors are not educated in nutrition in their curriculum.
If you want some good nutrition (in liquid form and you don’t want to juice) and can really have positive results, look into the drink mixes NSP has: These products have been researched and provide great natural nutrition that encourages health. This one doesn’t even have sugar in it: https://www.naturessunshine.com/us/product/love-and-peas-sugar-free-2-pack/P636555/ The first several ingredients are: Pea protein, sunflower oil, natural flavors—get the drift? You can add kale and other nutrients, but there is a wonderful blend of veggies in it. Which product do you think your body will use to be more healthy?
Besides herbs and good nutrition the Asian doctors all agree about the emotional element of being healthy. They want you to focus on gratitude and forgiveness. Allow yourself to let go of fear and to be more in touch with peace and harmony. They often recommend doing things like Tai Chi and using the breath to exhale negative emotions. Most of them spoke about trusting in God and how prayer is an effective tool especially when sharing it with friends and relatives. They give their patients hope even when they’ve been told by other doctors that they will die shortly.
Forgiveness is an important tool. “The Hawaiian word ho‘oponopono comes from ho‘o ("to make") and pono ("right"). The repetition of the word pono means "doubly right" or being right with both self and others. In a nutshell, ho‘oponopono is a process by which we can forgive others to whom we are connected. This is from an article in Psychology Today on Forgiveness.
The most important forgiveness is to forgive oneself. Begin today to be kind to yourself and then you can treat others with kindness. One of the most amazing parts of their treatment is dealing with the emotional aspect of cancer and the role forgiveness plays. Finding peace within can actually be part of curing cancer—this is a novel idea because in this country we do not hear about how important it is.
Holding a grudge doesn’t make you strong—it makes you bitter and hard. Think of what cancer is: Undesirable living organisms that destroy your life. The fact of the matter is that forgiveness is a two-way street. It has the power to heal the forgiver just as much as the one being forgiven − something that many of us often forget. Holding onto grudges and bottling up negative emotions that stem from past grievances only makes the situation worse for the one who was wounded (you) in the first place. In the end, it eats away at you emotionally and physically.
Find techniques to let go of anger, resentment, guilt and replace it with peace and prayer. Here are seven ways to forgive: https://www.mindtosucceed.com/how-to-forgive.html Enjoy a sense of lightness, more energy and happiness.

Herbal eGram #870 Indifference
Good Morning
Not caring one way or another is probably a good strategy for things that really upset you and you have no power to change. But, being indifferent when you can change how you care about the planet, choose the food you eat, treat the people around you, is totally wrong.
There are plenty of opportunities to do what is right when it comes to eating a proper diet. What is right for you may not be right for me, however being indifferent to what you put in your mouth has no play in doing the right thing. If you feed your body junk and you don’t care for it just because it isn’t a priority—it soon will become one.
Being indifferent to what is happening to our food supply by those who seek profit over safety is within our power—simply buy from someone else. Don’t buy conventionally grown food full of glyphosate and toxins. I’ve noticed more and more organic selections coming into my grocery store. If we buy it, they will sell it. I also shop online for organic grass fed beef; heritage pigs and free range chickens. I use Butcher Box and have been for a couple of years. Because there are only two of us, I get a shipment every 3 months. I can choose from a variety of meat and they often have specials.
I’m not close to a Whole Food so I buy other organic things through Thrive Market. They offer gluten free options as well as organic in popular brands. You can get Free Shipping with qualifying purchase. I love the organic Ghee from their private brand and I use their dishwashing soap as well. They also have a fish department where you can purchase wild caught salmon.
I choose carefully where I spend my money. I won’t encourage places like McDonald’s, Wendy’s or other fast food places. Fast food for me is a healthy smoothie or in a pinch a Clif bar. Your buying dollar speaks for you when you choose organic over conventionally grown food.
Between Big Pharma and the Monsanto (now Bayer) companies of the world we are losing our choice to have good health. We can no longer be indifferent to what is happening to our food supply. If you want to know what to avoid and what to buy, here is a good place to start: https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/ If you “Let Food be thy Medicine”, you won’t have to add to the profits of Big Pharma.
When the Farmer’s Market opens I’m there at least once a week buying locally grown veggies. I like to support the farmer’s from our area. I ask about when they fertilize and spray their crops so that they know my concern. I also talk to them about “Garden’s Alive” where you can get all manner of organic fertilizers and pesticides.
Where can you support better health? Whether it is for the planet, your relationships, better food and more kindness, begin to choose instead of being indifferent. Helen Keller said, “Science may have found a cure for most evils; but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all -- the apathy of human beings.” We don’t have to be on a protest line—we simply have to choose better.
We can choose to take a little more time for fueling our body with better energy food. We can choose to take an extra minute to listen to someone who needs us. We can choose to be more mindful of our planet in what we store our food in and use glass whenever possible. Canning jars make a great storage receptor. They are also wonderful when giving a gift of soup to someone who is ill.
Start a garden! It is the perfect time for getting seeds to grow and it is fun! I am anxious for spring to start. I watch for every bloom to burst forth. Right now my little blue star flowers are starting to open up and I noticed the other day that one of my Hellebore is in bloom. Mother Nature is not daunted by the snow. She keeps on bringing forth our beautiful world of plants. Go out and enjoy it—do NOT be indifferent to the beauty around you.
