Herbal eGram #684 Do No Harm
Good Morning!
We are told that medical doctors take the Hippocratic Oath of “Do No Harm”, but if you follow the imbedded link you will find out a surprisingly few consider it to be valid in this day and age. The oath also stated patient confidentiality, but we all know that medical records are now in the “cloud” and can be accessed by just about anyone with knowledge of how the internet works. The big thing that was stressed was: doctors never to "use the knife" (that is, conduct surgical procedures).
Surgeons were a whole different class of doctors back then. But, back to the oath: Hippocrates, considered the “father of medicine,” really didn’t formulate the oath. It was formed 100 years later based on his ideas. The oath had several principles in which it was based and all were messages of the heart. Do the best you can; preserve privacy; and pass on your learnings.
Many medical decisions (what tests, procedures and prescriptions) are really not based on patient need as much as CMA (Cover my a..). The fear of losing one’s license because the doctor didn’t make a recommendation is real. Lawsuits are endemic. Many tests are dangerous and unnecessary according to the book: “Should I Be Tested For Cancer, Maybe Not and Here’s Why”, by Gilbert Welch, MD. Combining patient stories and solid data on common cancers, Dr. H. Gilbert Welch makes the case that testing healthy people for cancer is really a double-edged sword: while these tests may help, they often have surprisingly little effect and are sometimes even harmful.
My training first as an herbalist, and then on to various certifications and finally as a Traditional Naturopathic Doctor has left me quite skeptical of today’s medical practices. I’ve consulted with so many people who have been victims of medical errors that it has left me very cautious of medical procedures. This is not to say that all medical doctors don’t have the patient in mind when making decisions but as a whole the doctors are put between a rock and a hard place: between their own Association and the Pharmaceutical Industry.
With that jaded view of medical doctors and hospitals, it was no surprise when my adult son asked me if he should let his broken collar bone heal on itself or have it operated on. There is a time and place for herbal medicine and when more drastic measures should be taken. Considering the break (you can see pictures on my website), it was advised that he have six screws put in and I gave him a regimen to follow of herbs and supplements.
When it came time for his check up the nurse who uncovered the bandage had to check her records because his break had healed so fast. She actually had to do a double take on his chart to make sure she had the date of injury correct. In her expert opinion adults simply don’t heal that fast! Michael followed my instructions to the letter. He took liquid chlorophyll before the surgery and every day after. This green drink helps the blood detoxify and decreases inflammation. He also took Bone, Skin Poultice (internally) 6-8 per day. This supplement has herbs that support tissue healing and anti-inflammation. He also used Silver gel topically and the liquid internally (1 tablespoon 3 times a day).
He started out with a prescription of Oxycontin for pain. Since I have had clients highly addicted to this medication I was concerned and told him that as soon as he could get off of this medication please do so. He was able to reduce and eliminate the pain medications quite quickly as the Silver and herbal regimen seemed to be so effective at reducing inflammation and assisting healing he honestly felt he didn’t need the meds. I feel that eliminating the drugs assisted in the healing process because it took the load off of the liver. At any rate, I am very proud of the way he handled the injury. He continues to heal but I’ve posted his break, the surgical repair and his healing shoulder for those interested to see.
When is it appropriate to seek medical attention and when should you handle things at home? Most doctors don’t have a clue on how the body heals, but they are experts at intervention and acute traumatic events. So, if your concern is to stop what is happening (bleeding, dehydration, broken bones, removal of foreign objects etc.) Go to the nearest hospital. However, as soon as it is under control---get to your nearest herbalist for assisting the body in the healing process.
Many hospital acquired diseases are the cause of death and what people go in for are minor concerns that could possibly been handled elsewhere. This is something that is a personal decision and everyone should follow their own guidance ---not mine. It certainly helps to know what to do during an emergency and how you can help the body during the healing process. This is not something taught in school but I feel it should be.
Prevention is also a specialty of a natural health practitioner. The medical community would have you believe that the body is a defenseless and stupid entity. It is not! You have an immune system that is on call 24/7. If you don’t assist it and give it the tools it needs to be effective, it can’t help you. Vaccinations are not the tools that help your immune system fight infection. At best, vaccinations can only stimulate the immune response to fight a particular harmful microbe. While it is concentrating on that, other microbes can sneak in. Having a healthy immune response depends on a variety of circumstances: a good supply of water; rest; movement; nutrition and attitude for starters.
I feel that health is a responsibility. Our body has needs and if we don’t supply those needs, we become unhealthy. Ignorance is not bliss! What you don’t know can hurt you. There are many books that help you understand how to obtain a healthy body. My favorite is: The Comprehensive Guide to NSP products by Steven Horne. This book helps you understand how the body functions; what nutrients the body systems need to be healthy and what happens when you are out of balance. They are available in my office or on line: http://treelite.com/proddetail.php?prod=bk-61 $35.95 plus tax and shipping.

Herbal eGram #683 Ahhh-Choo!
Good Morning!
Do you have seasonal allergies? The onset of the autumn season can bring with it itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing and a host of other bothersome to debilitating symptoms. Many people ask me what they can take to relieve the symptoms. There are many natural supplements that help relieve these symptoms but what about reversing and healing?
What would you think if I told you that your body is trying to talk to you? Your body releases chemicals such as histamine, just as it does when fighting a cold. This can cause swelling in your nasal passages, a runny nose, coughing, and sneezing. These responses are symptoms and we should always heed these signals. Think of the dash board warning lights that tell you: gas is low; engine needs checking; tire pressure is low etc. What would happen if you simply unplugged the warning light? You’d stop being annoyed but eventually the problem would arise as something worse. You might run out of gas in a deserted area etc.
According to new scientific evidence this allergic response is due to an over-reactive immune response due to a compromised gut. The same mucosal lining that protects the sinuses and throat also line the intestines. The mucus layer is supposed to be a certain pH that protects the skin on the inside of our body from irritants. When it discovers an irritant it begins to flow more rapidly causing our eyes to water, sneezing and coughing. This helps to flush the irritants.
Mast cells are part of the innate immune response. They are the sentinels, or guards that are set up as part of a warning and response mechanism and the first line of immune defense. As soon as we breathe or ingest a foreign invader, these cells start a signaling communication throughout the body. The intensity of the response when there is normal activity is a heightened onslaught of defense mechanisms such as fighter cells and macrophages (pacman) that kill and eat the invaders.
Over the years of poor eating, sleeping and an over stressed body, the immune response has gone awry. Instead of slow steady response, the body over-reacts causing massive hyper activity. There is even a diagnosis for this event: Mastocytosis. This simply means overproduction of mast cells and possible mutation. Depending on the severity of the response many systems may be involved. The immune system may produce too many white blood cells; the circulatory system may respond with high blood pressure; the urinary system may respond with over active bladder—it depends often on what is the weak link.
There is a communication that occurs within this mucosal lining that triggers certain actions to occur. The reversal is to calm this response and it takes more than just an anti-histamine product. If you want to reverse this situation you must heal the gut. You need to address the poor nutrition by taking high quality supplements to deal with the deficiencies. You need to eat healthy foods and get proper sleep. You need to drink water to assist in flushing toxins and finally, you need to heal the gut with specific nutrients.
The first thing is to remove irritants: wheat and gluten; dairy and sugar are the prime suspects in gut inflammation. Replace with vegetables (non starchy); lots of water with chlorophyll to support cleansing; and drink bone broth. Bone broth can be made with either chicken or turkey and you can follow the link to my website where I’ve described how to do it with organic meat. Mucilant herbs such as slippery elm and aloe have also been beneficial in re-establishing the mucosal lining.
Our nervous system needs a steady supply of B vitamins and when the levels of stress deplete our supply of B vitamins, irritation runs high. Taking a food grade supplement that has quality B vitamins and a host of other nutrients is advisable. I love NSP’s Nutri Calm to support nervous system health. I also feel that when one is anxious, taking AnxiousLess will reduce the level of inflammation that contributes to the irritation in the gut. Distress Remedy is a vibrational medicine that helps to calm the body and Lavender Essential Oil has healing benefits as well.
There is no one right thing when dealing with gut irritation. The symptoms expressed are vast. I’ve had people come in with constipation and others where they have a dozen or more eliminations per day. The over-reaction can express as either congestion or fluid. The key is to regain balance. This cannot be done by using drugs that have one purpose: control the symptoms. You must determine what is causing irritation and change that. It can be your environment, your attitude, your paradigm etc. Journaling helps.
Keep a food and feeling diary so that you know when you feel bad and what was happening around that time. Your thoughts and feelings are powerful. Who is controlling them? Don’t let other people reside in your head. Kick them out. Thinking about unhappy events after they have occurred does not usually help anything. Get control of your thoughts and push a reset button. Think, “how would I feel if this turned out the way I wanted it to?” And stick with that feeling!

Herbal eGram #682 Down to Basics
Good Morning!
What do you consider “Basic Nutrition”? The doctors have put a minimum requirement on nutritional intake. That is just enough not to acquire serious diseases such as Beri Beri and Rickets. This value was placed in 1968! It is the basis for nutritional labeling. The minimum required not to get a fatal disease that was prominent in the 1960s. Do you think people eat differently now than they did 70 years ago? That was when milk actually separated and cream came to the top. It is when farming didn’t involve GMO and huge amounts of pesticides.
Are you satisfied with that? Do you think the same measuring stick should be in effect? The book, Empty Harvest, was written by Bernard Jensen in 1990 and he told of the lack of minerals in our soil in just 30 years. This was before genetically modified crops were so prevalent. The use of pesticides such as Round Up has actually tripled since this book was written. The facts have changed. We are incredibly nutrient deficient in this country.
Do you have allergies and deal with the flu or a cold every year? Did you ever relate these conditions to the lack of nutrition you are giving your body? Even the American Medical Society states that taking a daily multi-vitamin and mineral supplement is necessary for sustaining health. If you have health challenges you need more than just sustaining, you need optimizing! If you deal with inflammation on a daily basis you are not giving your body the antioxidants it needs to fight free radicals that lead to inflammation.
My personal opinion is that most people haven’t a clue as to how their immune system works. Your immune system is a complex network. Learn how you can support your immune system by daily use of Sunshine’s Silver Shield: https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/330161784 I love this product and take a tablespoon every morning to assist my immune response. It is gentle and can be taken by the person with the most compromised immune response. It doesn’t stimulate immune so even people with auto-immune conditions can (and should) take it without a problem.
If you believe the pharmaceutical industry; “flu shots are mandatory”, to keep from getting sick. But do the statistics prove this out? Check out what a flu shot actually does in the body. It depends on a fully functioning immune response to work properly. It stimulates the immune system to respond to a foreign invader. So the shot actually doesn’t do anything that the immune system can’t respond to except make the liver work harder to get rid of the toxins that accompany that shot. You have the ability to support your immune response on a daily basis for whatever pathogen it meets!
Eating right is important for a healthy immune system. We all know this but can we do it all the time? Most people have insurance (car, home health etc.) but when it comes to nutrition, they aren’t insured! In order for the body to function properly we need to have vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, antioxidants and amino acids. Think “3 Little Pigs”. What is your house built with? Do you have a lot of stress in your life? Do you deal with a toxic environment on a daily basis?
Taking supplements is just plain common sense. I’ve supplemented my diet with a variety of things including Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids; Vitamin and Mineral Supplement and antioxidants. The more illness you deal with the harder the toll on your cells. Be kind to yourself and give yourself a break—add some food grade supplements to your diet. You can start with something as simple as Super Supplemental or kick it up a notch and get Super Trio (includes daily multi and Omega 3 along with antioxidants for anti-aging).

Herbal eGram #681 Life Changing
Good Morning!
Situations or circumstances that alter our life are “Life Changing”. Sometimes they are short lived and sometimes our lives are never the same. You break a bone and life changes but in general once it is healed, you go on. This happened recently to my son, Michael who was in an Aikido class and fell wrong. His work, sleep, and life in general, have changed for a while. He will have to learn how to do things differently until his collar bone heals.
If you lose a limb; this is life changing. You must alter how you do things for the rest of your life. If you lose an arm and it is the one you write with; you will have to retrain your other arm to do the things your dominant arm did. Can you imagine the plight of a para-pelagic? The things we take for granted!
Your attitude about the situation can impact how much it alters your life. You can actually create a better life. Take last eGram for example. Nikki Stone could have let her back’s situation alter her goals but what it did was re-commit her to them. It is not the easiest route to take a hard look at what the lesson in your situation is but it can be the starting point of an exciting journey or the tipping point into despair. It is a critical moment.
In the book, “The Influencer”, the authors talk about this pivotal moment as “crucial”. It is the point in time where we can either choose to go for it, or let it go. There are 6 dynamics that take a part in our decision. Our desire to go on is only one of the six. We must harness 4 out of the 6 influences to be successful. The six influences can be negative as well. It isn’t just about wanting things to be different (or maybe the same as they were).
Along with desire for a goal’s success, we need to have a coach…someone to help us find our way. This is a person who can guide us when we our challenged with decisions that may send us down the black hole of despair or bring us closer to what it is we want. We need support from those around us such as family, friends or community. Having a team of people cheering us on can give us energy and propel us to the next step. This can be either forward or backward depending on those around us.
Many people fail at their goals because they either don’t have someone guiding them or people cheering them on. Look at all the sporting events and you can see how a team does when a crowd is clapping and supporting them verses booing. There is an undeniable energy that kicks in and is contagious when people gather together. When it is destructive it is called, “mob mentality”. Make sure you surround yourself with a team of people who are on your side!
We need to create an environment that assures success. In weight loss, this can be your refrigerator or cupboard. One of our classes in the InForm course discusses what you need to throw away to create a proper environment for changing your life for better health.
Proper tools can assist us with our goals. If you are building something you need to have the right tools to achieve your goal. It is the same when you are working toward better health. If it is mental health, you need to observe what you are doing on a daily basis that may be contributing to depression or anxiety and take steps in correcting these. In physical health, those tools might consist of making sure you had veggies chopped and ready to eat or a blender that you can make smoothies that are healthful.
We also need a clear vision of our why. Do you know your why? Is it strong enough to be “Life Changing”? The why must be stronger than the why not. “If you don’t stop smoking, you’ll die sooner” does not insight people to stop smoking. Every pack of cigarettes includes a warning label. Why do you want to live? Why do you want to stop smoking? Is it because you want to be a better example for your children? Is it because you don’t want to wake up every morning only to cough your head off? Maybe you’d like to walk a half a mile and not be out of breath. Maybe you don’t want to smell or taste like an ashtray.
Whatever the reason for you to change, you first need to be clear about why. That desire to change has to include emotions. It is the emotion that has the energy and not the reasoning! Life Changing experiences involve passion. There is no passion without emotions. The worst emotion is fear. It is often strong enough for us to follow through but Love is a much better emotion to carry us through to success. Love of a child; love of a mate; love of God and especially love for you, are strong emotions that can carry us through the toughest challenges. Nurture love!
If you need help look into getting the book, “Change Anything”. We all need support and find someone who helps you keep the flame of your desire glowing. If you can, find an InForm class near you and let what you learn in this class support your goal to change your life.

Herbal eGram #680 What’s Next?
Good Morning!
Do you control your life, or does it control you? Most of us feel that we have some control over life until something unexpected happens. For the most part if we want control we have to be vigilant. Not vigilant about circumstances as much as how we think. We really can’t control circumstances because stuff happens! Every day something unexpected will pop up. It is how we perceive that situation that will either deter us or drive us forward.
When something does happen that we perceive as bad, our minds tend to go off in that direction allowing our feelings to grab hold and carry us through a negative sink hole. You’ve been there! Think of the energy it took to pull yourself out of that depressive condition. If you caught yourself half way, wouldn’t it have been easier? It would be great if we were all programmed to think “High Hopes” as soon as something “bad” happens.
If we look at the circumstance and try to figure out what good can come from it (and believe me it can be tough sometimes), we can allow more positive to flow through. There are always people doubting you. It is hard to ignore them. “Just what makes that ant think he can move a rubber tree plant—oops there goes another rubber tree plant!”
This past week I was honored to meet and talk with Nikki Stone, who was an Olympic Gold Medalist. Nikki spoke of that famous ski jump telling us the tremendous pain she was in and how she had to harness all her energy and focus on the task ahead. She shared her rule: “Be soft on the inside; hard on the outside and be willing to stick your neck out”!
Nikki had her mom in her corner the whole time. It is really helpful when you have someone who believes in your dreams and is there to cheer you on. Years of repetitive impact had taken their toll on Stone's back, and two of the discs were seriously injured. “One doctor explained the disc injury as looking like an eggshell that was cracked and fluid was leaking out,” Stone explains. Each of the 10 doctors Stone visited told her she would never ski again. But, she thought of her mom’s talk about being a turtle and sticking her neck out and she found a way to win that Gold!
Many famous people have had to ignore negative comments and believe in themselves to accomplish their dreams and goals. Think of the cancer survivors who beat the odds and got rid of their cancer by changing their diets and attitudes. They re-evaluated their life and realized how they contributed to the state of health their body was experiencing and stuck their neck out. They corrected behavior and eating that was affecting ill health.
Is your goal to be healthier and stronger? We know that according to “The Influencer”, it is much easier if we have support, correct environment and good tools when we want to accomplish a task. There are six levels of influence that either can break or make your goals. Do you know them? How many have been in place when you achieved your goal of weight loss only to gain it all back and more? Do you take medications you know are contributing to other health problems? You do not have a blood pressure pill deficiency. You need to understand how blood pressure works and how you weight is a contributing factor.
Next month is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month. You will only see snippets of information on how this type of cancer is one that seeps into fat tissue and spreads. If you have a high fat content in your body, your chances of having ovarian cancer spread is much higher than if you don’t. Do you know your fat percentage? Visceral fat is the most dangerous. We can test that! It is painless and very simple with the BioTracker. You step on it with your bare feet and electrical signals (which you don’t feel) send messages through your body and can determine how much fat you actually have.
Once you know your fat content, we can teach you what foods to eat and what to avoid to decrease this fat. It isn’t just about looking better. You can lose a lot of weight and not even touch your fat levels! Water and muscle can be lost but what you want to know is how can I burn fat and not diet?
It’s called Lifestyle! The way you think, eat and do right now are contributing to your health. Change must happen in order for you to get to your health goals. What are you willing to correct? Are you willing to give up that soda pop and chips? Are you willing to learn how you can easily gain healthy energy and feel tremendous? Then you need the class called InForm!
InForm has all of that and more. Let me share the hope and encouragement available through the 13 week course called: In Form—Burn Fat, Be Fit, for Life! Herbal eGram #679 Edamame
Good Morning!
Edamame is a bean. It is actually green or immature soy bean. In Asian cuisine it is boiled, salted and when eaten you put the pod in your mouth, clamp your teeth down and pull the empty pod out expelling the beans into your mouth. They are delightful when chewed and full of vegetable proteins. It is very low glycemic and balanced nutritionally with Carbohydrate total: 33%; Fats 36% and proteins 31%. The concern is it is soy.
There is a continuing debate about the benefits of soy. Most of the bad press is based on studies done on rats. I don’t know about you, but I kind of resent being compared to a rat. Soy has an isoflavone called genistein. Most of the rat studies were based on giving the rats a diet of pure genistein, not the actual food soy. In some cases the rats were fed 5 times the genistein found in soy.
Since genistein promotes estrogen in the body the concern is feminization. And to be safe, I don’t suggest giving soy formula to infant boys. However, in 2008, the American Association of Pediatricians reviewed all current scientific studies of the effects of soy formula on infants. “There is no conclusive evidence that it harms infant development, reproduction or endocrine function”, stated the American Association of Pediatricians.
When you look at the Asian population (who eat tons of the stuff); you don’t see men looking like women, or a high occurrence of breast cancer (more like the opposite). So, I’m wondering if it isn’t the Genetically Modified version that may be the problem. Soy consumption in the U.S. has skyrocketed since the early 1990s, with soy food sales climbing from $300 million in 1992 to over $4 billion in 2008. Clinical studies have shown that eating soy can lower cholesterol as well as the risk for certain types of breast and prostate cancer.
In the United States, Genetically Modified soybeans went from 17 percent per acreage planted in 1997 to 68 percent in 2001 and then 94 percent in 2014. Altering the genetic makeup of a food should be in question, not the food! When you alter the genetic makeup of food, you mess with Mother Nature! Want to know the whole process? Google popular science.
Farmers have been hybridizing for years to get the best strains of certain foods. Don’t mix up these two processes. Genetically altering genes is a much more complex procedure that one must first determine what traits you want in that food. Monsanto (the company that is altering 90 percent of the soy crops) has their own agenda in mind. They produce Round-Up and their agenda is to sell more Round-up! It isn’t about helping the starving masses because if you look at the trends GM food doesn’t have a very good track record. Most of the other countries won’t even accept it.
The only soy you should insist upon buying is Organic. And if you look at the above statistic that means only 6 percent of the soy is now grown without pesticide implantation. This is one reason why Monsanto’s voice was so strong in not allowing GM labeling to occur in every state that has had it up for a vote. We must demand to know what is in our food. Labeling is what most people look at to determine whether they will purchase a product.
Nature’s Sunshine will only sell products containing organic soy. So, if you are looking at a smoothie base such as Smart Meal, you can be assured that you are getting the best ingredients possible. We also have product called Phyto-soy. Why would someone want to take soy? http://hartonweb.com/nsp-herbs/bornforhealth.com/?sn=4981-5
The way genes are triggered in the human body is similar to a lock and key mechanism. When a receptor site has the right shape for a hormone to enter and unlock that gene’s expression, that gene can then go to work. Until that occurs, the gene lies dormant. So, if you have a cancer gene that is expressed by a certain type of estrogen and that estrogen enters via the hormone receptor site…bingo—you have now activated the cancer gene.
However, if you have something that mimics that hormone or can block the expression of that cancer gene, the function of that gene is halted. Phyto-estrogens are plant type estrogens that block the receptor site so that the harmful effects of that gene’s expression can’t occur. There is no toxic effect of the receptor site being blocked by the plant estrogen.
There are other estrogen-like molecules that can mimic and unlock the genetic expression and these are called xenoestrogens. These are often from petro chemical products like soft plastic. These molecules will activate the estrogen to create cancer. Which would you rather have? I for one, would rather have plant estrogens that block the receptor site than take the chance of that site being activated by a xenoestrogen that I may have inhaled while filling my tank with gasoline. If you’re thinking; “Hey, I’m a guy! I don’t need to worry about estrogen. Think again.
Guys have estrogen too! The balance of estrogen to testosterone is not the same in men and women but we do have both. Men have estrogen driven cancers. Men also have something known as “bad testosterone” which contributes to prostate and testicular cancer. But that’s food for another eGram. Suffice it to say: you might be making decisions based on bad science. The company driving the science is often in question.
What about chick peas? Foods like chick peas (hummus) and peanuts also contain a small amount of the isoflavone genistein. Soy, however has the most concentration of it. If you are concerned about estrogen driven cancers you might look to a product called: Indole 3 Carbinol. This supplement will actually rid the body of bad estrogen! http://hartonweb.com/nsp-herbs/bornforhealth.com/?sn=1506-4 But what you don’t want to do is buy a product that is pure genistein. Eating a food containing this is different than consuming a concentrate. To me this would be like being your own rat experiment.
Food contains many elements. These elements balance out each other. Take broccoli for example, it is known to be high in Indole 3 Carbinol but it also has other factors that balance it out. When you single out an element and take only that you are very close to the definition of a drug. There are no checks and balances with drugs. This is one of the reasons they work so fast.
NSP’s Indole 3 Carbinol is made from cruciferous veggies and has some balancing factors in it such as: Broccoli flowers, indole-3-carbinol and broccoli sprouts. Studies show that I3C may be helpful in the metabolism of estrogens, protecting breast tissue and reproductive organs from cell damage. It also appears to act as an antioxidant, helping the body to cope with the oxidative damage caused by free radicals.
In 1998 University of California, Berkley researchers injected I3C directly into breast cancer cells. I3C halted the cancer cell division by blocking cancer cell DNA duplication. This lead to another study by the same researchers to see if I3C was as effective as Tamoxifen (which carries numerous undesirable side effects.) They injected the first group of human breast cancer cells with I3C, a second with Tamoxifen, and a third with I3C and Tamoxifen. The cells injected with Tamoxifen alone experienced a 60 percent inhibition in DNA synthesis, the cells injected with I3C had a 90 percent inhibition, and the combination had a 95 percent reduction. These studies support the use of I3C for the prevention of a recurrence of breast cancer.
Whether you eat Edamame, hummus or drink soy milk perhaps the “take-away” from this eGram is make sure you can trust that it is organic and that you aren’t getting any genetically modified versions of a food.

Herbal eGram #678 Whisper
Good Morning!
Often the most important message we hear is said in a whisper. It’s the message we listen to when we shut out all the distractions and noise from other people and things. It is that tiny voice within us giving us direction. It isn’t generally the easy way, nor is it what we want to hear. But, in the long run it is what we need to do. We need to get rid of sugar in our diet; we need to get more sleep; we need to drink more water.
When I was a child I thought of this inner whisper as the voice of Jiminy Cricket. Originally an unnamed, minor character in Collodi's novel, he was transformed in the Disney version into a comical and wise partner who accompanies Pinocchio on his adventures, having been appointed by the Blue Fairy (known in the book as The Beautiful Fairy with Sky Blue Hair) to serve as Pinocchio's official conscience. To call on his “conscience” he had to give a little whistle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOZzNOkcEgM
Sometimes we just need to know that we have support in these difficult decisions. Especially if temptation is guiding us to do what might be the easier path. One thing I know: when we develop the ability to listen to the whisper more things go right than wrong. Nobody is perfect and it is very helpful when you are in a group that has similar values.
Eating and doing healthier things will reap a great benefit. It is much like tending a garden. If you don’t weed it, water it, and feed it; it won’t reap a harvest. You also must plant the right seeds. Everyone knows that if you plant beans you’ll get beans and not cucumbers. But, for some reason we don’t apply this fact to our lives. We don’t eat food that will give our body the fuel it needs for repair and building healthy cells and tissue and yet we expect consistent energy from it.
The tools I learned in doing the In Form class this spring/summer helped me understand that I need to listen to those whispers if I want to stay healthy and strong. If I am to improve my health I need to do more good for it than bad. So, if the occasional party comes along and I want to indulge, I know that during the days following I need to listen to the whisper of health I know is right.
It is easy to create a bad habit. Creating good health habits takes reconditioning. We sometimes have to look at paradigms differently. The things we do on a daily basis will either contribute to health or deter. The first step is to understand what “bad” habits have you gotten in to and which ones are you willing to change to achieve better health. You can pick 3 at the beginning of the week and make a chart. List those 3 habits you want to either stop or do and then make seven slots to check off.
During the week you can record your progress. If you haven’t been able to do what you set out to do and still want to incorporate the habit then write it down again for next week. Once you’ve done it every day for a week you will find it easier to maintain and you will want to create another habit of health. If putting the same health habit down 3 weeks in a row doesn’t get accomplished then switch to a different one. Clearly you aren’t ready to start that one yet.
Here are some you could choose: drink half your body weight in ounces of water every day; put your fork down in between bites; listen to the whisper that says “I’m satisfied”; Eat mindfully—no eating while driving or watching TV. No eating out of a bag or box—put it in a bowl. Take 5 minutes out of every hour and concentrate on breathing and relaxing. Get up and stretch and move!
Are you up for the challenge? Come join the In Form fall group beginning on September 9th. Learn more about how you can enjoy the coming Holiday Season and still get healthier and stronger. Keep track of important numbers like visceral fat and hydration. Are you getting younger or older? Chronological age progresses but I’ve been able to drop a few years in my metabolic age and I intend to keep getting younger. How does that sound?
We’ll teach you some lifestyle habits that will make you feel and look younger. Old is more of an attitude than what a number states. I’ve known 40 year olds that act like 60 and I know 70 year olds that act and perform like 40. Which category do you want to be in? Do you constantly deal with pain and inflammation that makes you look and feel older than your years? This class will help you understand about inflammation and the food we eat.
I’m excited to once again present this 13 week, life changing course in optimum health habits. Let me know if you are interested! Class fee for beginners is $400; for repeats: $125. Each Tuesday night you will receive a smoothie meal that is delicious and filling; we will go over the subject for that week; celebrate our successes and discuss how we can attain our goals. This is not a diet! It is making your lifestyle work toward health. Let me know you will be there on Tuesday night September 9th at 6pm. Call 248-623-2288

Herbal eGram #677 Hepatoprotective
Good Morning!
Whenever you see Hepa as part of a word, it generally is referring to the liver. For example Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. Itis is Latin for inflammation. Hepatoprotective should be obvious…protecting the liver! There are many herbs that are hepatoprotective, such as Milk Thistle and Blessed Thistle.
When I took Latin in High School I could not comprehend why anyone needed to understand a “dead” language. Little did I know how much it would help me understand many of our English words; especially medical terms. When you look at all the conditions that end in itis…Arthritis, Bursitis, Sinusitis etc.; you can take the mystery out of the diagnosis. When you tell the doctor your joints hurt he/she will just come back with, “it’s probably arthritis”. This simply means inflammation of the joints. So, in fact, you gave the doctor the diagnosis! All they did was tell you the Latin name for what you have. Are you any better off?
What do you want to do about your inflamed joints? Perhaps understanding why they are inflamed is a good start. Occasionally food allergies will cause the joint fluid to swell. Your bones don’t actually swell. It is the fluid surrounding the joints that will swell. The pain comes from the nerves that are affected by the swelling. All cells are bathed in fluid and this fluid should flow with nutrients and absorb toxins and dead cells to carry it through to elimination. The nutrition should feed the cells and produce energy (Krebs cycle).
I’m very excited to be presenting a class on Supporting the Liver and understanding Detoxification. Whenever I teach a class I do a lot of research and I learn so much that helps me share with others to help them understand better how to be healthy. For example: many people are told that it is a sign of a healthy pregnancy if you have morning sickness…this is total bunk! It is a sign of an overwhelmed liver and it cannot detoxify properly. I’m so glad I learned this because it never made sense to me when I was pregnant and sick all the time how that could possibly be “healthy”.
If your liver detoxification pathways are congested it can cause multiple symptoms depending on where the congestion is. Did you ever see the “I Love Lucy” segment where Lucy is packaging candy from a conveyer belt? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnbNcQlzV-4 A must watch! Lucy and Ethel are trying to keep up with packaging the candy while the conveyer belt suddenly starts moving faster and faster. The candy represents the toxins we are exposed to and how difficult it can be for the liver to keep up. It tries to compensate (just as Ethel and Lucy do) but it eventually becomes overwhelmed and can’t even find places to store the toxins.
The other part of the equation is that the liver needs certain nutrients to help it with the detoxification processes. Primarily B vitamins but also magnesium, selenium and zinc help as well. Taking a food grade vitamin and mineral supplement with amino acids (they are needed also) is important for good liver health. I love NSPs Super Trio because not only does it have the right kind of nutritional supplement for health, it has a wonderful Super ORAC antioxidant to help with detoxification and a pure Omega 3 essential fatty acid to give your body the right kind of oil it needs.
Milk Thistle Combination is a wonderful product to support liver health. It has milk thistle in it but also some very important detoxification modulators such as Choline, a specific B vitamin necessary for those detoxification pathways to run smoothly (unclogging the conveyer belt); N-Aceytal Cystine which is a precursor to Glutathione. This is extremely important when there is evidence of inflammation in the body. And Dandelion, which is licensed in Germany as a medicine that treats liver and gall bladder concerns. This product is recommended especially when one has had their gall bladder removed.
Emotionally, the liver is the seat of anger and anxiety. If you find these emotions are something you struggle with you might consider doing Milk Thistle Combination or one of the many other liver supports we’ll be discussing in our class on Supporting the Liver and Detoxification. The Chinese created the recipe Liver Balance to help move congestion out of the Liver when the liver is “hot”. The opposing recipe is for depression: Mood Elevator which has herbs that help increase energy in the liver.
The liver is vital for health. Keep it happy and moving freely. It takes a good amount of water to flush toxins and fiber helps to absorb toxins. Another sign of congested fat is high cholesterol levels. Taking a fiber supplement like Fat Grabbers has been very beneficial for absorbing toxic fat and moving it out of the body. If you don’t like capsules, you can use LOCLO which is a pleasant tasting fiber that helps absorb toxic fat from the blood stream.

Herbal eGram #676 Suddenly
Good Morning!
Yesterday the weather was crazy! We had some sun and some extreme wind along with thunderstorms. In a flash my neighbor’s umbrella and table flew up into the air and catapulted into the lake 30 feet away. The storm came careening in with wind gusting up to 70mph in some areas. It was fascinating to be in a safe environment and watch everything blowing about. Luckily we never lost electricity as many others did in our area.
Wind can be awesome! A soft breeze can be so welcome when it is hot and humid but when it blows too hard, it can be a source of destruction. I’m sure many of you have seen the pictures of the effects of a tornado passing through an area. In a matter of minutes houses can be demolished; furniture found hundreds of feet away and objects twisted in amazing ways. People’s lives can be turned upside down. You start to realize what is really important when something like that comes along.
The first thing you want to know is if everyone is okay. Check to see if all are accounted for and then you look at the destruction and what holes in your emotional well-being will they poke. You realize the things that represented memories or what can never be replaced. After the adjustment to those loses comes a deep breath and a thank you that what was important survived…the people. In general, most people have insurance that will cover the cost of the replacing what was lost. In some cases, it may even be a blessing because you will get new and the old was wearing out. There is always good if you look hard enough.
Health can turn on a dime as well. It can happen in a matter of seconds…an accident; a fall or even a storm of sorts. The storm can be a food ingested or breathing some life threatening toxin. What separates those who survive from those who succumb? How come some people can look at disaster and see the silver lining? Attitude can make or break a situation. The faster you can look at the good, the faster that good will come. It is the law of attraction.
How does one prepare for an attack on the immune system? There are many ways to protect oneself from immune system attack. I start my day with a dose of Silver Shield and a shot of Thai Go to support my immune system. Then after I wash my face I put a coating of Silver gel on my face and hands and inside my nostrils to help my skin from absorbing toxins. I also take two probiotics that will help my gut be healthy. Some experts say that the health of the entire organism (us) depends on the health of the gut.
With breakfast I will usually take a nutritional form of immune support in either Elderberry De3fense, or Olive Leaf extract and vitamin D3. Eating healthy is also a way to boost our body’s ability to ward off disease. If you don’t eat food that taxes the body’s ability to digest, your body can convert nutrients in a more efficient way. So, I also take enzymes with each meal to make sure I get the nutritional benefits from the supplements and food I take in.
Being healthy is not about being lucky! One must always be one step ahead by giving the body nutrients it needs to protect you. This includes proper sleep, water, exercise, breathing properly and a healthy mental attitude. Do you bear grudges? Is your day spent wishing you had made a better response to a put down? Take a deep breath and think about what makes you happy. Forget about what has already happened because there isn’t anything you can do to change that. You can only change your response to what is happening right now. Take charge and be responsible for your thoughts and actions.
How can we be ready for emergencies? There are several things I keep on hand in case of emergency. I like to have ice packs ready and I also have frozen poultices that can be applied immediately to reduce inflammation. I have a ready supply of herbal supplements that deal with acute injury such as Charcoal for food poisoning and Aloe gel for sunburn. One of my favorite remedies is Tei Fu oil. This little pharmacy in a bottle can help with a variety of stings and bites; wounds and preventing tissue damage as well as being antiseptic and pain relieving. More recipes and hints can be found: http://www.bornforhealth.com/newsletteregram/recipes.html
Nothing can ruin a vacation more than being sick. If you are going somewhere and you need some help preparing for it...send me an email about your concerns and I will respond with some help.

Herbal eGram #675 TMI
Good Morning!
Too Much Information! Did you ever feel overwhelmed? This is the “Information Age” and I feel that occasionally people are trying to absorb too much at once. You can ask “Google” anything and “Wikipedia” will throw in an accumulation of stuff, substantiated or rumor. Wikipedia even asks for corrections.
When I look something up I like to get at least three different sources that agree on the same topic. One source only may be the expression of someone who will profit by the answer or someone who is just passing on rumor. Many drug companies will hire an actor who looks like a doctor or even hire a real doctor to recommend a certain drug. This creates validity in the mind of the observer. Advertising directly to the public has made the pharmaceutical industry one of the most powerful organizations with the best paid lobbyists around. They can control what bills are put into law; how tax dollars are spent and a whole lot more. The best way to beat them is by your purchasing dollar.
Medicine has its purpose for sure but the average person is taking medications that they don’t need. We have come to rely on medications instead of taking control of what we eat, do, and think. Being responsible in our health is what will help us regain control of our health. It is time we stop looking for the easy way out and start recognizing that when we have pain it is generally something we did or didn’t do. When we are sick---same thing! We need to learn from our mistakes and not repeat them.
Sugar and starches make us fat. It also contributes to inflammation and pain. If we don’t feed our body properly and get the rest it needs for repair; we have pain. Eating the right foods and digesting them properly is a priority if you want a healthy body. I take enzymes with every meal. Once a person reaches the age of 35 or so our digestive ability slows down and we need to assist the body by taking food enzymes. We also need to eat the right food slowly and be aware of what we are eating.
Stomach distress is a huge problem in this country. The inability to digest food and break them down into usable nutrients is the first stage of creating a healthy body. If a person can’t get the right nutrients, muscles deteriorate, brain function diminishes and repair cannot happen. Energy comes directly from the food we eat; it is our fuel. All food is not created equal. The minerals found in organic food, or farm grown can be as much as triple those found in commercially grown food. Commercial farmers use chemical fertilizers and spray with pesticides that affect the value of the food.
One should eat until they are satisfied, not full. If you eat too fast that sensation isn’t felt. It takes time for the brain to register that you have eaten and that it can turn off the hunger mechanism. It is also important to chew and taste the food. This helps the body produce the enzymes necessary for the food to break down into usable nutrients. When one eats too fast they will often end up with heart burn as an indication that the digestive system is overwhelmed.
Occasionally the damage has been done and one must take steps to repair the damage from years of poor eating habits. The first thing of course is to begin eating the right foods and to use something to assist in digestion (this is not a drug that interrupts digestion). Food Enzymes are specific nutrients that assist digestion. They are different than probiotics. To repair the inflamed tissue many herbalists will use slippery elm. Slippery elm helps heal internal mucosal tissues, such as the stomach, vagina, and esophagus. It is often recommended as a restorative herb for people who suffer from prolonged flu, stomach upset, chronic indigestion, and resulting malnutrition. You can use slippery elm to soothe ulcers and stomach inflammation, irritated intestines, vaginal inflammation, sore throat, coughs, and a hoarse voice.
Herbal remedies have been used for centuries and sometimes millennium. Most drug medications are “hot off the press”. Herbal remedies have been used by people and aren’t something cooked up in a petri dish and then had a few human trials (slanted to show the best of the outcome). Most herbal remedies are safe and effective when used as recommended. All medications have side effects and some of these aren’t even listed. In many cases you are the guinea pig and the research is being done on you. After about 5 years when the data shows that the risks outweigh the benefits, they will take the drug off the market. In the meantime many people have been injured but they have very little recourse.
Most drugs do not address the cause; they simply address the symptoms expressed by the body. High cholesterol is an indication that there is too much inflammation in the body. Why is the body inflamed? What are you eating? Do you have stomach distress? Perhaps you should be addressing why the body is expressing symptoms and not just covering up the symptoms. Ignoring a problem generally makes the problem worse. When you pay attention to your body, it will let you know what is right for it and what isn’t by giving you indications (symptoms). You only have to pay attention!
Some people will ask advice from everyone instead of paying attention to what is going on in their own body. You need to be the investigator. Keep some records of when you don’t feel good and when you do. What was happening around the time and what were you eating are two of the main questions you want to ask yourself. Journaling is an excellent way to learn what is working and what isn’t. When we go through the InForm sessions we discuss the importance of recording feelings and food. It is amazing what you will learn.

Herbal eGram #674 Butterfly
Good Morning!
Are you like me in being awed by seeing a butterfly? They are the most amazing creatures. I plant flowers that encourage butterflies and hummingbirds because I love watching them flit about. So tiny and yet so full of energy!
We have a butterfly type organ that wraps around our windpipe called a thyroid. Most people struggle with this very important organ because so many things have hampered its health. Bromide replaced iodine in baked goods and flour products about 40 years ago. Bromide, chlorine and fluoride all can plug up the receptor site that is used to take iodine into the thyroid. This is one of the major difficulties in the accuracy of the TSH test according to Dr. David Brownstein, renowned thyroid specialist and author.
When iodine no longer binds to thyroid cell membranes, enzymes called peroxidases are able to damage these membranes and produce autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Hyperthroidism (Graves Disease). Researcher Dr. Guy Abraham has observed several cases of thyroiditis and hyperthyroidism that have been corrected by the simple replacement of iodine.
Iodine is found in large quantities in the brain and the ciliary body of the eye. Lack of iodine may be involved in production of Parkinson’s disease and glaucoma. It is also thought that lack of iodine may be a contributing factor in cancers of the breast, uterus and possibly prostate. The very small amount of iodine in iodized salt cannot begin to help regain this imbalance. Table salt is more a chemical than a natural compound.
Natural sea salt should have a color to it such as pink. This makes the salt a full mineral salt helping iodine get absorbed and utilized. Absorption is a bigger problem and is the major contributing factor to iodine deficiency. If you take in iodine and the receptor sites that help get it into the cell structure are not available, iodine cannot enter the cell and deficiency continues.
When the receptor site is plugged up with bromide, fluoride or chlorine the mineral iodine cannot be absorbed. It is also a fact that certain vitamins and minerals must be present for iodine to be utilized. I love the formula Master Gland as it has herbal support for the adrenals, thyroid and pituitary as well as vitamins and minerals necessary for the absorption of iodine.
Environmental toxins will contribute to the malabsorption concern. These are things like cleaning products and air fresheners that have “fragrance” listed on the label. Over 400 chemicals can be included under the title fragrance and these can be harmful endocrine disruptors. Cleaning products can be made easily and smell wonderful with simple ingredients such as NSP concentrate, essential oils and Nature’s Fresh.
Here’s just one of the many natural ingredient solutions I’ve created:
Mildew and Mold Cushion Cleaner
Tea tree oil is an essential oil that is a broad spectrum fungicide.
20-30 drops tea tree oil; 2 cups water1 Tablespoon Nature’s Fresh; 1 teaspoon NSP concentrate
Combine the ingredients in a spray bottle. Spot test on cushions to make sure there is no discoloration. Spray on the cushions. Don’t rinse. In a few days, both the strong smell of the tea tree oil and the mold will dissipate.
Supporting our butterfly organ with supplements such as Master Gland and Dulse may help prevent moodiness, fatigue, weight gain and many other concerns related to thyroid issues. Eliminating chemicals that disrupt hormones is also helpful. Many of today’s chemicals contribute to a weak thyroid gland. Most of them are things you may use daily. Start switching to natural products that you can make from simple ingredients like baking soda, borax and natural soaps.

Herbal eGram #673 Skin
Good Morning!
There is a conundrum about sun exposure. Some experts say we need it in order to get the vitamin D needed for a healthy body. Others say it is dangerous to expose our skin to the sun’s harmful rays as it may contribute to skin cancer, early aging etc. What you aren’t being told is that a great deal of the harmful effects is not just exposure but may be how healthy our liver and digestive systems are during exposure.
Different skin tones can tolerate exposure better than others. For years we have been told to use sun screen. Researchers at the Environmental Working Group, a Washington-based non-profit, released their annual report claiming nearly half of the 500 most popular sunscreen products may actually increase the speed at which malignant cells develop and spread skin cancer because they contain vitamin A and its derivatives, retinol and retinyl palmitate. Furthermore, the FDA has known about the dangers of vitamin A in sunscreens since ordering a study 10 years ago, but has done nothing to alert the public of the dangers. Read More.
If you’re like most people some of the recent Holiday weekend involved being out in the sun. You may have a little sunburn to prove it. You may have used one of the above 500 products that were supposed to protect you from the harmful rays of the sun. Aside from the vitamin A problem many chemicals are included in the sunscreen products to make them spread easier, smell better, etc. There is an additional problem with spray type as the tiny particles can be absorbed into the nasal passages and create an immune system challenge.
Time Magazine also recounts some of the Environmental Working Group's advice:"Avoid oxybenzone and retinyl palmitate. Many effective products contain one or both compounds — oxybenzone and retinyl palmitate — that the EWG specifically suggests avoiding. Oxybenzone is an endocrine disrupter, the EWG says, and retinyl palmitate is a form of topical vitamin A that some animal studies suggest may be linked to an increased risk of skin cancer."
At my next Herbal Hour class I will be discussing Xenoestrogens. These are the chemicals that contribute to disrupting hormonal balance in our body and cause a myriad of problems such as PMS, Menopausal complaints and even infertility. I will also be teaching you how you can detox the body from these harmful chemicals. The liver is the key! Keeping the liver healthy will help you utilize the good effects of the sun as well as supporting better skin.
Most people are out to sell you products. Marketing a product does not necessarily embrace the truth. It often has little to do with the truth. It is all about how to get that product into your hands and make money for the manufacturer. Advertising has learned how to bend the truth. Psychologists are employed to learn how a person buys and how best to appeal to that aspect.
There are natural skin protection creams that can be used. The fact remains, you should not be out in the sun for longer than the skin can tolerate. Your ability to tolerate has to do with building up to sun exposure and skin tone. Just as dark people cannot absorb vitamin D as good as light skin people, light skin people cannot be out in the sun as long as dark or olive skin people. Some plants tolerate the sun and some need shade. People are the same!
If you put sunscreen on every time you are going outside you lose the ability to absorb vitamin D. This very important vitamin is something our body needs for thousands of functions. Getting your vitamin D levels checked should be part of a yearly exam, maybe the most important part of your yearly exam! Most experts say that vitamin D levels should be above 60nl mg to prevent cancer. Others say between 60 and 100! It is an easy exam to have done and many doctors include it in their testing procedures but it would be best to make sure you are going to get the results.
Taking a good vitamin D3 supplement is more important for those people who live in areas like Michigan where sun exposure is too occasional to get the full value needed. It also has to do with whether or not your body has the ability to absorb and convert through the processes to get to the usable form of vitamin D. More info
I have seen vitamin D levels raise to healthy levels in just one month of taking our NSP vitamin D3. The person only had to take two tablets first thing in the morning. I suggest taking D3 in the morning and if you are taking a Calcium supplement (which should have D in it for best utilization) in the evening. Don’t consider the D in your calcium supplement sufficient. Too much D taken at the same time as Calcium can inhibit the Calcium from getting into the bone where it is needed.
Sun can be damaging and damaged skin is just that…damaged. What do you do to help the skin heal? Do you already have damaged skin? Did you know that there are herbs that support the health of skin, hair and nails? These same herbal remedies have been used in India for centuries to promote beautiful and vibrant skin. The combination Skin Detox has herbs that have been used to help with digestive disorders as well as skin ailments.
The skin is the largest organ of the body and has multiple tasks. You need to protect it and make sure that when it is damaged you assist in healing it. I love our Herbal Skin treatment. It is aloe based and has soothed many a sunburn while helping it heal. The best skin treatment though is prevention and that can be as simple as wearing protective clothing and monitoring your sun exposure.
