Herbal eGram #662 Transformation
Good Morning!
If you have children, especially boys, you know what a Transformer is. They can be shaped like a human and then can transform into a vehicle or back. To be a human transformer means to change into something totally different such as when a butterfly changes from a larval caterpillar to a gorgeous butterfly. This transformation can occur in humans as well. I’ve seen people in extreme pain and misery transform into a totally different person with personality and abilities one would never have thought possible. Hidden within every person is the potential to become magical.
What unleashes this potential? Energy! The energy of love, healing, understanding, hope, can transform you. Do you know what it is you need? Some of us think we know what we need and it often depends on someone else’s action. We often want others to transform us. We listen to motivational CDs and think…I can never do that. That was well and good for that person but my circumstances are different. We tend to justify why we are a failure.
If you love yourself, others will love you too. If you are understanding; others will understand you. You must first feel the hope inside you. Tapping into that spark inside you takes transformation. You must change the way you think. Bob Proctor told us at Convention that most of us don’t Think. What we are really doing is repeating the thoughts of others. We share shocking stories that the media presents. We love complaining about how hard things are. But this energy just produces more “bad news”.
Do you hear something and then pass it on? Do you say things that are your parent’s thoughts or someone else in your childhood? Many of us follow a paradigm that doesn’t serve us because it is what we’ve been taught. Maybe you were told “you’ll never amount to a hill of beans!” Or, “you’re stupid”, “ugly”, or, any other degrading insult and it stuck. Ask yourself what is playing in the background when things are not going your way. Think about what voice you hear.
Thinking challenges those paradigms into a belief that actually promotes happiness, health and success. Next time you get caught up in a fear ask yourself if it is real and factual or, something others have told you. You can change. How do you want to see yourself? Create the change you want to be. See yourself as a caterpillar and imagine what that butterfly would look and feel like. What would the change mean to you?
Does the thought make you sit up straighter? Get caught up in the dream and then write down what you want to do to transform into that person you dream about. Focus on that transformed person. Shout out: I am…. Strong, Healthy, Happy, Empowered! Feel the energy that is driving that expression. Get in touch with this new energy and develop it.
Sometimes using an energy formula will help you shift from old paradigms into the one that will serve your dreams. I love two of them. Release It helps to move old energy out by taking a few drops and then seeing the old energy leave. Then take “Be Courageous” to enforce the new paradigm. This is the you transformed. Make use of the talents and gifts you have. Don’t hide them under old messages. Take a deep breath and immerse yourself in this person.

Herbal eGram #661 Being Authentic
Good Morning!
When I look at the word authentic I think: Time tested, true, in for the long haul etc. Striving to be authentic is synonymous with being trust worthy. Today’s medicine has fallen short of being authentic. Doctors and medicine were just one step below God in years past. When it works it is just short of miraculous. However, many of my clients have experiences that are medical disasters.
Many people are taking aspirin because they believe it to be a preventive measure in preventing heart attacks. There has never been any substantial proof of this! What there has been proof of when someone takes aspirin on a daily basis is perforation of tissue. This daily use has contributed to ulcers and break through bleeding. There are many “clot busters” in the herbal pharmacopeia that don’t have the bleeding risk aspirin has.
What we should first look at is why is the body forming clots? In general, sticky blood is the culprit and the contributing factor to sticky blood is sugar. Another factor is the wrong kind of fats. Taking an Omega 3 supplement can help keep the cells from sticking together and creating a healthier blood cell without the bleeding factor. Generally one should take between 2 and 3 grams of this healthy oil daily to support heart health according to leading cardiac specialists who promote the use of natural products.
American’s have the most expensive health care and the worst bang for the buck. We pay 10-100 times more for hospital care and medications “given” to us in the hospital than any other developed country. Americans spend $2 trillion per year on health care, about $7,000 each, yet it buys almost the poorest healthcare among developed countries, with 200,000 deaths per year from medical treatment.
In the book: Malignant Medical Myths: Why MEdical Treatment Causes 200,000 Deaths in the USA each Year, and How to Protect Yourself by Joel Kaufmann, PhD You will find out why advice from authorities on screening tests, drugs, diet, exercise, alcohol, radiation, radon, and water fluoridation is often wrong and commercially motivated. See how clinical trials are slanted. Understand how “sickness” is created to sell treatments, and which government agencies support these shenanigans.
In looking into these modern concerns top on the list is pharmaceutical drugs. The second on my list is poorly given advice promoted by the media that serves industry and not the people. One example is “salt free” diets. Healthy salt is important for proper fluid exchange. The other is the importance of grains in one’s diet. This grain fed diet promoted by industry has led us to be obese. This is how cows are fattened up just before slaughtering them.
The other dietary no-no was promoted almost 70 years ago…butter is bad. Butter is a healthy food and slows down the way our body converts grain products into sugar. Dr. Mercola recently gave a report with statistics and charts of what has happened to us health wise in the last 70 years since the myth of eating saturated fats is bad and contributes to heart disease. Butter is back on track as being a healthy food but more specifically Grass fed organic butter can actually be very healthy for you.
Margarine is a plastic poor imitation of something that is a healthy food. It took some very inventive promoters to sell this product. Fats are needed for healthy brains and many other things such as the absorption and utilization of calcium. We also know that eating avocados and coconut are good for us. Bad advice from industry has affected our health in countless ways. It is tough to find unbiased statistics. Since the only ones who can afford to pay for these studies are those who have a profit margin to fulfill; most of the studies are slanted to the benefit of those who pay for them.
So, who can we trust when it comes to our health? How do you look for authenticity in what we are being told? The measure of authenticity to me is something time tested. Herbal remedies have been time tested. There is no paid medical expert out there pumping up what these remedies can do because there is no “industry” that will profit by the promotion.
Drugs have patents. To get a drug to the patent stage takes millions of dollars. This money is spent on purchasing testing and processing reports to spin the drug testing results. Once the product has been tested and the reports have been written the company has to “sell” it to the public. They do this by buying medical experts and by giving samples to doctors to promote the drug. They also can profit from “off-label” use. A drug will get patented to be effective in the treatment of a condition and during the “people testing process” (this is where the side effects come in to play), they will find an action that will block symptoms of a totally different condition.
For example: Night time anti-histamines. These medications weren’t patented for being a sleep aid but because people took them during the day and became drowsy—they were relabeled as a sleep aid. This doesn’t make them safe and neither do medications become safer once they are available over the counter. It only means the patent ran out and you can now purchase them without prescription.
When looking for authenticity in health advice one must research whether the procedure is time-tested. What are the risks and benefits? What is the whole story? I’ve had people who were told the procedure is a simple one and in fact they took months to heal from it. You want to know the average recovery time from any given procedure. How much rehabilitation will be involved? And everyone undergoing medical treatment should have a mediator. When you are under an anesthetic you cannot make rational decisions and there should be someone with your health interests there to help you.
If you have a medical emergency, chances are, you will get the best medical treatment available. This country excels in emergency care. What we fall short of is preventive care. Preventive care is what you do when you take control of your health and discover what you need to be healthy. For me it is about diet, proper mental attitude, spiritual support and herbal supplementation with a little physical exertion thrown it. What makes you authentic?

Herbal eGram #661 Maintenance
Good Morning!
Spring is coming—believe it or not! Along with spring we have generally a list of things that we need to do or assess for maintenance. Sometimes it involves patching, painting and repairing. Often times it means replacing. You know it isn’t wise to put some things off, like a leaky roof. So those things might have to rise to the “Do ASAP” list. Because if you don’t further damage could occur.
Maintenance is something we need to do for our body as well. We often will put this off until the body is desperate enough to cause us pain. Our muscles are meant to be exerted. Our brains are meant to be active in solution finding. One of the things listed for prevention of Alzheimer disease is problem solving such as crossword puzzles or learning new hobbies or activities. Using the brain is very important to keep cells active and healthy. I also like to use nutrition like DHA and ginkgo. The brain needs healthy circulation as well.
We need to pay attention to how we are feeling because that can all of a sudden slam us. Take the Emotional Healing Assessment quiz and see if you need support nutritionally for moving stuck emotions. http://bornforhealth.com/images/Emotional_Assessment.pdf Your friends and loved ones will appreciate it.
Perhaps we need to pay more attention to what we are fueling our body with and how much water we are drinking. Sometimes during the winter we get into some comfort food and evaluating whether that is serving our purpose in being a healthy, vital human being is a good thing to do as spring approaches. We want to be strong and healthy for the warmer days when we will want to be more active.
If you suffer from spring allergies, you need to seriously consider doing a cleanse before the trees start sending pollen out into the air. Often times it is because a person isn’t eliminating effectively that allergies will act up. There are many wonderful cleansing products available from Nature’s Sunshine. Tiao He Cleanse is a great cleanse for cleaning at a cell level and paying attention to cleaning the liver. Clean Start has a packet of fiber and bentonite clay that can pull toxins out that may be contributing to poor health. Adding a little extra fiber may also be of benefit.
Psyllium Hulls combination is a fiber powder that I used many years ago to help my colon work more efficiently. I had a lazy colon response even in my teen years. So, I also used LBS II to help with peristalsis. I did this routine every morning and within a year I was doing the routine only every other day and taking Probiotics every morning. I only do this routine once a year now and have very good colon response. I also learned the value of drinking half my weight in ounces of water daily in between meals.
Spring is always a good time to do cleansing. We do spring cleaning and it feels good to have a nice clean home. Our bodies are home to us as well. Picking a cleanse to do may be as simple as drinking more water and mixing that water with liquid Chlorophyll—Toast your fellow workers and family with this wonderfully cleansing green drink. This drink is safe enough for children.
Liquid Chlorophyll helps to oxygenate the blood and increase circulation. It can help the body with better nerve transmission to control heart muscle contraction. It is mildly antibiotic and can assist the body in getting rid of harmful bacteria and fungi as well as yeast. It also helps to remove drug deposits from the body and negates the harmful effects of radiation, toxins and many carcinogens. It is delightfully minty in flavor and very refreshing.
If you have trouble deciding which cleanse you should do, begin with the chlorophyll and then study the different cleanses from the listing on my website: http://hartonweb.com/nsp-herbs/bornforhealth.com/? Or consult with a certified Herbalist who can help you with your individual needs. Someone who has an irritated colon might do better with Everybody’s Fiber which helps to soothe irritated tissue while helping to balance the mucosal lining which has been compromised.
Taking a probiotic supplement to help balance the gut is imperative in our society. We have been eating poorly for years and with the misuse of antibiotics have all but destroyed intestinal integrity. The best way to get balance back into the small intestine and colon is to take probiotics away from food—despite what the label suggests! It is rather a new finding that one can contribute to Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth by taking probiotics with a meal. So, I take probiotics before bed and upon rising…you might consider doing the same.

Herbal eGram #660 Change
Good Morning!
In many parts of the country this weekend was a time change. Our body has to deal with it. The herb Spirulina has nutrients in it that helps many people deal with time zone changes. If you are travelling across the country, or to other countries where you are passing many time zones, you can take two Spirulina capsules each time you pass a time zone and you will feel less stress upon arriving in your new time zone. It is pretty amazing how you can enjoy your trip with less jet lag.
Most people are uncomfortable with change. Some people embrace it and have a good attitude that whatever happens, they will be okay. It has a lot to do with familiarity and comfort. Even if we are not happy with what is going on, it takes a lot for us to move into the unknown. Maybe your job is intolerable and stressful, but the thought of going out and finding another one holds you back. Maybe your relationship is toxic and you really need to get out of it.
Kainotophobia (also spelled Cainotophobia) is the phobia associated with the fear of new things or experiences (change). Neophobia includes the fear of trying new things such as food. It is quite common in children. Not wanting to try new things often happens as we age and therefore the saying, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. Old dogs do not like to be taught new tricks and some older people find comfort in what they’ve done habitually.
I’ve seen it so many times that once a person has made the commitment that they are going to change they say, “I wish I’d done that sooner…I’m so much happier!” It does take courage to change and the recipe I have for, “Open for New Possibilities”, on my recipe page may help.
If a person struggles with OCD issues they are uncomfortable with changing the patterns they’ve created. The patterns make them feel safe. When they become entrenched in the patterns, their life becomes restrictive and they may even become isolated. Isolation can shut you off from not just places but people. You can even become reclusive.
Recognizing you are stuck in a pattern that causes isolation is the first step in allowing more freedom in. Often times these feelings are due to a frightening situation that occurred in the past. Getting professional help from an Emotional Healing expert or someone who can counsel you will help you toward some healthy goals.
Supporting the nervous system with B vitamins, like what is in Nutri Calm and getting more control over the fear with Be Courageous flower essence, may nutritionally give you the support you need. Nutritional deficiencies can be a huge contributing factor to neurological conditions. Do some research and understand better what your challenge is and find some answers. Perhaps do some prayer work; meditate, journal and read some inspirational books.
Change is a part of life. You either choose it, or it chooses you. You can either be frightened by it or frozen, or you can look it as a challenge. It is a frame of mind that you have the ability to control. You may need help and that’s okay. There are many choices for help. Recognizing you aren’t happy in the situation is the first step and then getting help is the second. Take a deep breath and get in touch with your feelings. Do you need to change something?

Herbal eGram #659 Gut Permeability
Good Morning!
Leaky Gut Syndrome, or gut permeability was a topic recently discussed on the Dr. Oz show. It is also the topic for March’s Herbal Hour and Sunshine Sharing. Since our topics for 2014 were picked six months ago, I wonder how Dr. Oz found out! All kidding aside this subject is complex and I’m very happy to see the medical community bringing it to the public’s awareness.
The complexity lies in, how does it begin? Some say it is our addiction to sugar, others blame stress and yet there is mounting evidence that medications contribute to gut permeability. Sugar contributes to inflammation and also feeds yeast. Yeast imbalance causes irritability in the lining contributing to allergies, fatigue, brain fog and a whole host of other symptoms including tumor growth.
The escalating use of corticosteroids (even in young children and babies) to fight inflammation is scary to me because these synthetic forms of a hormone our body should produce does not address the real problem. It only calms the symptoms and creates a multitude of risk factors. The real problem is gut permeability and how to repair it.
There are many natural anti-inflammatory supplements that have been shown to not only protect but also encourage healing of the intestinal wall thereby not only calming inflammation but addressing the cause. Let’s examine some of the contributing factors to Leaky Gut.
Aside from eliminating sugar and refined carbohydrates we need to eat some healthy fats. Some food sources would be coconut oil, avocadoes, nuts and seeds. Use nut butter instead of peanut butter as there is a yeast component to peanuts that may be contributing to the inflammation process. Make sure your nut butter does not contain sugar. Not all sugars are bad but most of what we find in food is either dextrose or HFCS and they do contribute to inflammation and gut irritation.
We need to chew our food properly and use enzymes to help break it down. I find even children need enzymes to break food down into usable nutrients. Food like papaya and pineapples contain healthy enzymes and so does the herb mint. We find these in Papaya/Mint chewables or Papayazyme.
Many people confuse probiotics and enzymes. Enzymes primarily assist digestion in the stomach and beginning of the small intestine. Probiotics work in the lower small intestinal tract and large intestines. They are quite different but both very important to gut health. Probiotics help to maintain healthy bacterial balance. They are depleted during stress and the use of antibiotics.
Slippery elm is an herb that has the ability to assist in tissue healing. Empirical evidence has proven the use of this herb very beneficial in soothing irritated tissue and calming inflammation. Another herb that is showing scientific evidence against inflammation is Curcumin. The good news is that there is no toxic level for either of these herbs. They are safe even at high doses.
Dr. William LaValley is using Curcumin in his cancer treatment and recommends it to be taken with Omega 3 as an effective approach to killing cancer not only in tumors but of the blood. Using a high bioavailable source of curcumin is paramount if one is expecting success. Curcumin with Black Pepper extract is showing the best availability along with consistent bioavailability. That means that the properties do not hit the bloodstream with a peak and then drop. It consistently is sustained in the blood stream for longer lasting effect. It is well known that Curcumin is anti-inflammatory and safe.
Statistics show that Leaky Gut is the underlying condition in up to 70% of the concerns people go to a doctor for. These concerns may include Acne, allergies, painful joints, skin conditions, brain fog, depression and a host of other concerns. What should you do about it? It is more fitting to say, “what are you willing to do about it”? Can you eliminate sugar and gluten from your diet? Can you increase non-starchy vegetables and healthy fats? Are you willing to take some supplements that would increase your success rate?
Are you willing to give up stress? Mostly, stress is thinking about things that never take place. Most people worry about the future. There is only the present that we can have any control over. The rest we have to leave up to God or a Higher Consciousness. Letting someone else control things is a difficult job for people. Many of us like to feel like we are in control…we aren’t! We do have control over our thoughts and those need to be happy and positive for health to take place.
Are you willing to get to bed before 11pm? There is a huge amount of evidence that proper sleep is needed for healing to take place. When you correct your diet, usually you will be able to sleep better and more soundly. While this is occurring you might want to look into taking Melatonin or Herbal Sleep to assist in the calming of chatter and reconnecting with the Circadian Rhythm that controls sleep patterns. Using essential oils like Lavender and Roman Chamomile may be of benefit as well.
Perhaps you need some guidance as to the steps you want to take and perhaps you can jump right in and start with one thing you are willing to change. Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and a perfect time to look toward health by giving up bad practices. By the time Easter gets here you will be much healthier. You can eliminate Sugar this week and next gluten and then add in veggies etc. You might even want to escalate by doing daily one elimination and one addition. Eliminate sugar and increase veggies.
Try going to bed 15 minutes earlier until you are in bed at 10:30pm giving yourself the needed sleep for health. Do 15-20 minutes of vigorous activity during the day and increase that until it is 30 minutes. Make sure you are drinking half your body weight in ounces of pure water daily. Eat smaller and healthier meals. You just might find you have a lot more energy than you’ve ever had before and your symptoms lessening daily.

Herbal eGram #658 Genetic predisposition
Good Morning!
With the information presented from the Genome Project and also the Epigenome Project, scientists can determine which genes contribute to disease. They can find the genes that contribute to specific cancers and certain degenerative diseases. Just because you have a particular gene does not necessarily mean that the disease will manifest. That is where the epigenetic science comes in.
Did you ever write with invisible ink (lemon juice, milk or baking soda)? When coloring Easter Eggs you might have decorated the egg first with a white crayon and then dipped it into the coloring agent to have the design show up where the color couldn’t penetrate.
Epigenomics is the study of the wrapper that protects genes from expressing. It is somewhat like not putting the egg in the coloring agent. Think of the coloring agent your lifestyle and the choices you’ve made and the white crayon is the gene. Whether that gene is expressed or not depends 90% on what you do, think and feed your body. Some people will quote 70% is dependent upon what you do. In either case you have much more control over your genes than was ever thought before the discovery of Epigenomics.
Some genes we want expressed and these too have a wrapper. What we feed our body will support or deter health. We also know through scientific evidence how we think can affect our health. Science says that working muscles are important for their vitality. So, what you think, do and feed your body is very important. Don’t let “Automatic Negative Thinking …ANTs” determine your health. You have control over them and Dr. Daniel Amen has some wonderful ideas on how to control them in his book and a blip in the link for his Youtube discussion.
The link to negative thinking and disease is real and so is what you put in your body. Eating vegetables and healthy fats, along with a good source of protein is important to optimum health; not only vegetables, but specifically, those with lots of color. Color determines the type of antioxidants available in the vegetable or fruit you are eating. Carrots are known for Beta Carotene due to the orange color. Tomatoes are known for lycopene etc. It is suggested we eat a rainbow of food daily.
I don’t know about you, but I try very hard to be healthy and yet it is impossible for me to eat that kind of a variety of food on a daily basis. My answer to that is to take antioxidants like Super ORAC that help provide me with antioxidants in case I miss one or more of the colors during the day. Another way is in choosing a Solstic powder to add to my water like Solstic Immune.
The book, Adaptogens in Medical Herbalism by Donald R Yance points out that these amazing herbs known as adaptogens help to modulate gene expression. So what are these herbs? Korean Ginseng is one and another is Astragalus but these are just a couple of hundreds of herbs that provide antioxidant and adaptagenic properties. There is much talk about turmeric and how its gold color is a super food variety of antioxidants.
Are adaptogens better taken alone, or in combination? Yance says that they provide a synergistic effect when taken in combination. Think of them as a “fruit salad” of color and nutrients. An easy way to take them is in capsule form for those who don’t have time to cut up veggies and make fruit salads. NSP has many but one of my favorite adaptogenic combinations is AdaptaMax.
Who should take them? To this question I answer, anyone who wants optimum health. There are wonderful chewable antioxidants for children. This might be the missing link for them not to acquire genetic predisposition to diseases that seem to run in the family. In years to come we may find out that adaptogens are more important than taking vitamins! But, why wait?
If we know that adaptogens have been proven to help the “wrapper” or Epigenome, than, why wait? If you want optimum health it only makes sense to enhance your program daily with one or more of the many choices we have for antioxidants and adaptogenic herbs. Who knows what nasty gene you may stop from expressing!

Herbal eGram #657 Signature
Good Morning!
Most official documents require a signature. You have to sign your tax report; checks; credit card slips etc. Signatures validate a purchase or a document attesting to the fact that you agree with what it is you are signing. They hold you responsible for your honesty in whatever your have signed. When you sign a check you are saying that there is money to cover the cost of what you are paying. When you sign a credit slip it means…yes, I am the holder of this card and responsible for paying for my purchase.
So, if 41 states no longer require cursive handwriting to be taught in schools, will this change? Will students only be taught how to write their name? Will printing your name be official enough? Your signature is unique to you. It takes considerable practice to imitate another’s signature and considered forging if you sign a document with another person’s name. Your signature is unique to you.
So is a thumb print. Will you be thumb printing instead of writing your name? There are other legal impressions being used for identification such as eye scans and ear prints. Yes, Ear Prints! These unique identifiers are now being used in forensic medicine. Tattoos are also unique identifiers as well as piercings. People can remember you with these unique monikers.
Years ago being able to write one’s name was a sign of intelligence…with the advent of computers and keyboards that isn’t true anymore. One only has to recognize the alphabet and how those letters are placed in words and sentences. Comprehension is not dependent on words alone. Illustrations also help us to understand concepts. A picture is worth a thousand words, so will letters be replaced by YouTube videos?
Having a signature can also refer to your style; how you do things and how you look. Some of the athletes we saw in the Olympics had certain styles or looks that made them unique. They may not be to your taste but it is their style and with it they are making a statement of individuality. Whether you dye your hair a certain color (or multiple colors); wear your clothes a certain way; or even talk in a certain style…these things claim your individuality.
In medicine the object is to find sameness. Diagnoses are made by listing similarities and if enough similarities are present then a diagnosis is made. I find this system of analysis difficult because it never takes into consideration a person’s uniqueness. Your style of eating; sleeping; thinking etc. are all important to the outcome and yet none of it is considered when making a determination of what you are dealing with and how to treat it. Human factors should be considered.
It is not scientific data that health is based on but the energy of the person who is dealing with the condition that I feel is important. If football players can play a half a game with a broken foot…should this drive not be considered when making a prediction on outcome? It is also the energy of those around the person. Point in fact, the Olympic champion female who won the Silver medal; Noelle Pikus-Pace had the energy of her family behind her. She couldn’t wait to jump up into the stands and receive her hugs.
Don’t be someone who just follows the crowd. Decide for yourself and empower yourself when it comes to health. Learn to check out resources and do what you know to be the right thing for you. Another case in point is the mother of a teenage boy who was brain dead from an auto accident and she worked with him to get him back to being healthy and normal using massage, essential oils, Omega 3 fats and all kinds of natural remedies despite what the doctors told her. Bobby Ghassemi’s mother never gave up.

Herbal eGram #656 Salt
Good Morning!
This has been a particularly cold and snowy winter. To keep our roads safe, the Road Commission plows and salts the roads. We come to depend on them so that we can drive safely in bad weather.
The salt that is used is not the type we would put on our food; or is it? Actually if you use regular table salt you do use the same for salting your foods as is used to salt the roads—Sodium Chloride or Halite. The difference being that regular table salt has been highly processed to remove dirt but also other minerals. A surprise ingredient you may not know is that it contains sugar. Sugar helps salt pour. http://iufost.org/iufostftp/Sugar%20in%20the%20Salt+pic.pdf
Historically salt was so important it was used as a bartering tool in lieu of money. It was so precious that in biblical times it is told that the salt would be added to other herbs and then bound in a cloth, tied like a tea bag and every one would dip the bag into their food to enhance the taste. The most important guest would be allowed the first dipping.
Salt has received a bad rap as something to avoid if we want to stay healthy. For years dieticians have touted a “salt-free” diet to maintain health. But, if you look at what replaces that salt, you might be just better off switching to a healthy salt. According to Dr. David Brownstein who wrote the book: Salt: Your way to health; there has never been any scientific evidence that the use of salt in food will raise blood pressure.
Dr. Brownstein claims that we need salt but we need a full-spectrum salt and not sodium chloride. It may be good enough for our roads, but I wouldn’t put it in my mouth. I use Nature’s Sunshine’s Sea Salt. It is pink and full of healthy minerals including iodine. Table salt is actually toxic and can adversely affect health because of the additives and the processing it has gone through.
Salt pH should be about 7.0 which is neutral. You can test your salt by adding a small amount of water to dissolve it and then test it with a pH strip (can be purchased from NSP). Aside from just plain dehydrated sea salt, NSP adds celery seed. During ancient times, Indian Ayurvedic medicine used celery seed to treat colds, flu, water retention, poor digestion, different types of arthritis, and certain diseases of the liver and spleen. It is not the only thing you should depend on to assist the body in protection but it is a nice and tasty addition to healthy foods like steamed veggies.
What kind of salt do you use to season your food? Some people like Himalayan Sea Salt and others like the red salt you can get from Hawaii. The color of the salt often is determined by the minerals in the salt. Celtic salt is often a gray color. So, if your sea salt is white, it probably has been bleached to remove “impurities”. The impurities are often the minerals that help to balance the effects of sodium.
Do you know the difference and why one salt would be better for you than another? Sodium is important for your health and so is iodine. Choosing a healthy salt can benefit your body. Sodium is an energy carrier. It is also responsible for sending messages from the brain to muscles through the nervous system so that muscles move on command. When you want to move your arm or contract any muscle in your body, your brain sends a message to a sodium molecule that passes it to a potassium molecule and then back to a sodium molecule etc., etc., until it gets to its final destination and the muscle contracts.
The “Salt of the Earth”: According to the bible, salt of the earth could be used as a metaphor meaning a person who is devoted, loyal, earnest, and honest. This kind of a person lives a good life to be emulated by others and become a role model to the rest. He/She is a hard-working and adds value to the lives of others.
What’s your opinion of salt now? Certainly all salt is not the same and one should be particular about the kind used and the amount. Until next time…Happy Seasoning!

Herbal eGram #655 Fuel
Good Morning!
What kind of fuel do you use? Recently, my husband purchased a new Corvette. The fuel recommended is premium gas. Many high-end and luxury cars require a high grade of gas. Diesel is what most trucks run on. My van runs just fine on Regular. Some vehicles are battery operated and must be plugged in to be re-charged. Someday there may be a better and more efficient way to fuel our vehicles. What we do know is that there is always some sort of waste.
The waste from gas fueled engines pollutes the air and that is a big concern. There is argument that even battery operated vehicles pollute the air. Whenever there is combustion of any sort there is waste. When you burn wood in a fireplace there is ash as residue. If you burn soft wood, not only does it not burn efficiently, you get far more waste.
Can you relate that the fuel used in a vehicle is much like the fuel we feed our body? We want top performance from our muscles and brain and yet our food choices are very poor at combusting to good energy. One research analyst pointed out it is much like an oil tanker that runs out of gas. He’s carrying around a boat load of fuel but it isn’t available to him. We eat plenty—we just don’t know what our body needs to create proper energy.
Energy drinks are not the answer. There are some dangerous side effects from consuming energy drinks. Our energy does not come from stimulation but from combustion in the mitochondria of the cells. These little engines are what drive us and knowing what fuel our body works best on can determine how much energy you have to do the things you want.
Healthy fuel will give you long lasting energy for muscles and brain. Many people who drink energy drinks are thinking faster than they are doing. Their thoughts spin out of control. Some may argue that a Starbucks coffee has more caffeine in it than most energy drinks. The problem is the type of caffeine used in energy drinks is highly processed and can cross the brain/blood barrier. This means your brain gets a direct hit of caffeine instead of having to process through the liver. This can be dangerous to the fragile brain cells receiving the hit.
Energy drinks are often high in sugar. If you read the label, one can is often more than one serving but most people use it as a single serving consuming twice as much as they think they are consuming. The other huge concern is using an energy drink as an alcohol mixer. Alcohol is liquid sugar and this combination can be deadly. Top 10 dangerous of Energy Drinks lists Cardiac Arrest, Migraine headaches and Diabetes concerns as some of the downside of consuming energy drinks.
What do you think the best fuel is? The answers may surprise you…First on the list is Water! According to Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/08/15/foods-that-boost-energy-_n_1779032.html. The number one food to keep your energy up is water because the cells need to be hydrated. Next on the list are almonds that are raw and unsalted and preferably soaked overnight. The third is complex grains like quinoa and millet. Gluten is a huge concern in this country and yet many people continue to compromise their gut by eating bagels and donuts for breakfast.
Many experts will start their day with a power smoothie. At NSP there are many wonderful smoothie bases to choose from including Whey, organic soy, and yellow pea protein along with veggies to boost and feed the mitochondria. You can add those soaked almonds to the blender and some fresh or frozen fruit for taste (although the mixes are delicious on their own). You can also add Bee Pollen for some wonderful protein in amino acid form, some ginseng for zip and you can drink it on the way to the office.
The night before you can put 10 almonds in a small glass and fill with purified water. Next open your ginseng (1 or 2 capsules depending on how much zip you want); open 2 Bee Pollen capsules and put the contents into a small dish so in the morning it is much quicker for you to make your smoothie. Greenzone is a powder that has amaranth, spirulina, flax and quinoa in it for added nutrition. Adding a scoop of this in the morning can really kick your smoothie up a notch.
I like to add Solstic Energy to my smoothie! This powder is packed with nutrients to create energy and very efficient fat burning from the get go! Burning stored fat is a favorable thing as we tend to store it and the body forgets, or doesn’t have the capacity to use it as fuel. Burning fat starting at breakfast can help your body balance weight and get the energy you need. Make sure you drink your water throughout the day. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with your new energy regimen! Find out what fuel you burn best for the desired energy effect.

Herbal eGram #654 Sweeeet!
Good Morning!
Did you know there is such a thing as good sugars? We hear all about how bad sugar is for us and especially HFCS. High Fructose Corn Syrup has the ability to cross the blood brain barrier and create havoc and cell disruption. There is a debate about how bad this sugar is but the consensus is that obesity has skyrocketed since manufacturers started using this instead of sugar. It is found in almost all prepared food so a real scientific study is difficult. It is cheaper and more profitable for food producers to make. It is certainly not found in nature.
I thought I should write about the healthy sugars we need to assist in repair and function of the body. These sugars are referred to as Glyconutrients and there have been several books written about how important they are. There are basically eight of these sugars and they have been found to contribute to blood sugar balance; longevity; infection fighting; immune boosting and more. Glyconutrients are the foods and supplements that contain essential saccharides.
Mushrooms are a food that some healing saccharides can be found and you might know that Maitake, Shitake and Reishi are kings among the mushrooms because of their glyconutrient availability. Humans have the ability to transform sugars from one form to another but we can’t manufacture them. We must consume them. Besides mushrooms these beneficial sugars are found in breast milk, certain fruits and vegetables, unprocessed grains, roots and plants such as the gel of aloe.
Xylose is from xylitol and this sugar is found in birch tree sap and corn. Xylitol has been found to inhibit tooth decay when used daily as either a mouthwash or toothpaste (or both). It has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Xylose (the sugar molecule in xylitol) fosters cellular communication (according to the book, Sugars That Heal by Emil I. Mondoa, M.D and Mindy Kitei). This book goes through each of the essential sugars and explains how they benefit the body and what foods they come from.
Sweet FX is a product that helps the body and may balance blood sugar. It contains a sugar called: L-Arabinose. This is a poorly absorbed sugar found in the cell walls of plants such as corn, rice, wheat, rye, sugar beets and plant gums. L-arabinose is commonly referred to as a carbohydrate blocker, due to its ability to slow down the absorption of sucrose in the gastrointestinal system. This helps to slow the triggering of insulin from the pancreas.
L-Arabinose is just one of the ingredients in this recipe for supporting a healthy diet when trying to lose weight. L-Theanine is an amino acid that is found in tea leaves and has demonstrated an ability to assist the body in lowering blood pressure and calming the stress response. Add to this Cinnamon and Chromium you can see how this is an effective product with huge health benefits. It is especially helpful when on a dietary program and you have stress.
Nervous eating or the craving for sugar is often associated with the need for weight management. When one determines they want to lose weight and gain health they often need some support. Not just support from other people but nutritional support in order for their program to work successfully. I love this product because it isn’t just a dietary aid. It actually helps the body in obtaining the healthy ingredients it needs for cellular repair and correcting a habit of eating bad sugar.

Herbal eGram #653 Global
Good Morning!
It’s a global world! For people of my age group it is difficult to keep up with just how global everything is. My computer can talk to my iPad and iPhone instantly. My pictures that I take on my iPhone are instantly in my iPad as soon as I’m in an internet zone I can connect to. It is truly amazing. Kids share instantly what they are doing and who they are with. Savvy parents can check on their children’s whereabouts with GPS signals on their mobile.
They now have cameras in day care centers where parents can tune in and see what their children are doing. You can put one in your home to check on sitters. Some of these devices are helpful. I know when I had to go to work and put my children in day care or preschool, I would have loved to be able to see how the sitter interacted with them. However, there is a downside to it and that is the privacy thing.
The lack of privacy is almost scary. Big Brother is truly on every street corner with cameras recording your bank transactions; driving errors and even what movies and books you like. If you purchase through something like Amazon it remembers what you’ve purchased and can make suggestions in the future. If you watch movies or shows on Netflix it will email you and tell you when the next series is available or suggest similar programming.
I’m not sure who has the time to watch all this stuff, or keep track of it—it isn’t me. I can hardly keep up with my family’s activities and my own calendar. I don’t like timers and buzzers going off all the time. I often bake by smell rather than setting a timer. I’ve always been hearing sensitive. I can wake up with the alarm sometimes before it goes off. I used to hear it click when I had the old clock radio and it would make a noise before it would sound the alarm.
I love mornings. I like to sit with my cup of coffee (yes, I do allow myself some bad habits) and check out my iPad. I read and answer my emails daily; check out FB and twitter; play a couple of games, (I especially like Words with Friends with my Sister) and bingo…hours have gone by! I still need time to clean, prepare meals and do some work.
No wonder everyone says they are too busy. How we spend our time is a choice. We need to make sure we are choosing wisely. Busy is not necessarily productive or even doing what is important. What is important to you? Don’t get sucked into the black hole of the internet. Set yourself a timer if you like that sort of thing but at least set up a time limit.
Years ago I heard a discussion by Steven Covey who spoke about a professor in France and how he determined use of time. It really puts things into perspective and maybe it can help you:
It went like this: the professor took out a rather large jar and from a bag proceeded to add some large stones the size of tennis balls and when he could add no more he asked the students, “Is this jar full”? And of course, most answered, yes! He then took out another bag and began to pour pebbles into the jar until no more would fit it. Once again he asked the audience, “Now is the jar full”? And by now most of the students were wary and only a few said, yes.
He then reached for another bag and began filling the jar with sand until no more could fit in. And asked the final question; “Is the jar full now?” And most of the students sat in anticipation of what the professor would add next. He said, “The large stones are our responsibility to ourselves, our family and friends; basically what we deem really important. The small pebbles are the things that tend to use up our time and energy and if we don’t put the big stones in first there will be now room for them later. The same with the sand as it is what we find irritating in life and sometimes these are our thoughts.
He then added water to the jar and said that there is always time for a little reflection and change. What are your large stones? Sometimes our children grow up so fast and we ask, “How did that happen?” Sometimes we look in the mirror and ask, “Where did the time go?” If you don’t have those large stones of memories, you may become disappointed and sad that it all slipped by unnoticed. Be aware of your time. It is precious and not a thing to spend unwisely. Make time to enjoy every day; to accomplish something every day and to especially love every day.

Herbal eGram #652 Surprise!
Good Morning!
My sister recently celebrated her 75th birthday and the family threw her a “surprise party”. She was totally surprised and thrilled that so many people cared enough to set it up, prepare for it, and attend the party. Some surprises are not so welcome.
Last week over 300 of my 600 subscribed eGrams were returned to me “undeliverable”. If you were one of those who didn’t get their eGram or received two, I apologize. I’m hoping this one gets to you as I’m used to having them reach their destination without a hitch. This kind of a surprise is an inconvenience. As I wrote in last week’s eGram we sometimes have to detour and find our way back on track. If we’re diligent, we can do that quickly without too many surprises along the way.
Some surprises are life changing—maybe for the good and maybe for the bad. This past week dealing with the Polar Vortex that whipped across the country inconvenienced a lot of people. Some plans were postponed and some couldn’t be delayed and so were cancelled. Some people were caught up in the ramifications of the weather: accidents, sickness, property damage etc. Sometimes when disaster strikes we are surprised by the helpfulness of some people and how charitable they can be.
Some things we may think are a surprise but then when we sit back and analyze the situation it really is no surprise at all but a reasonable conclusion that we hadn’t anticipated because we didn’t think it all the way through. Statistically we rationalize danger into believing it won’t happen to us. People who smoke think they’re exempt to the dangers of cigarette smoking, or the effects of poor diet. Then when they get sick they’re surprised.
Last Saturday I taught a class on traditional remedies that pioneers used over 200 years ago. They knew how to work with the body and understand what clues it was expressing. They didn’t take drugs to reduce symptoms (basically they hadn’t been invented yet) but gave the body nutrients to feed it and strengthen it. Samuel Thompson was an old time herbalist who wrote several books about how to know herbal medicine and use it for having optimum health. Millions of people across the US and Europe followed his teachings. His recipes were time and people tested. One of them is in a formula called HCP-X that Dr. John Christopher formulated and Nature’s Sunshine encapsulated.
The herbalists of old weren’t surprised by developing a cold or the flu. Those who practiced herbal medicine knew what to do and “nipped it in the bud”. They also felt that when the body expressed those symptoms it was trying to cleanse out toxins so they learned how to assist the body in removing these toxins by opening up the 4 eliminative channels. Herbalist feel that if you take a small amount of time now to do what needs to be done to help your body, you will save yourself days of suffering.
If you would like an audio CD of the class with handouts; you can send a check to me for $15. I will mail you the class information. We went over some tools to have on hand when the body is telling us—prepare you have a virus! Don’t be surprised by having to spend a day or so sick.
What most people will do is take some medication that lessens the symptoms thinking that if they get rid of the symptoms they are well. WRONG! The symptoms are not the conditions—they’re the messenger. What you need to address is the message. Learning how your body works and what it takes to have optimum use of it is one of the reasons I do this weekly eGram and my monthly class. Thanks for being attentive and I hope you learn some beneficial things to do so you aren’t surprised by life’s little interruptions.

Herbal eGram #651 Roadblock
Good Morning!
Have you ever run into a roadblock? Maybe it isn’t a block but a detour. We’ve had lots of construction this summer and fall and had to use different routes to get where we wanted to go. Sometimes it can be quite annoying and even set your day off on the wrong footing. It may make you irritable and easy to anger. If you can’t shake it the irritation will carry through and make for a miserable day.
The roadblock may have made your drive take a little longer but if you know in advance you can factor that in. This weekend we were slammed with over 12 inches of snow. Like you, many things had to be either postponed or delegated to a lesser category of importance while we shoveled ourselves out. The more flexible you are with your plans the better it is on your level of anxiety. Sometimes you can talk to yourself and calm the concern. When what you’re missing is really important the disappointment may take over and you can’t calm yourself. In cases like this it is good to have some AnxiousLess on hand. It will help you gain prospective over the situation. Just one capsule will help you to calm enough to get a handle on the situation.
Life sometimes throws in a roadblock and messes with our plans. If you’ve ever been sick with a cold or the flu, you know what I mean. You wake up and know you just aren’t up to par. You begin to evaluate how you feel and maybe you feel a bit feverish and your stomach knows it doesn’t want any food right now. You may feel groggy or disoriented and all you really want to do is fall back into bed.
You might have to take time off work; miss a function or event you were looking forward to, or perhaps it was a vacation that was less than anticipated due to illness. It’s all you can do to pick up your phone and let someone know that you won’t be there. You certainly don’t feel like making yourself some chicken soup or even get a glass of water. Liquids are very important to flush out toxins and so having some chicken soup in the freezer and thawing it is certainly easier than beginning from scratch or “heaven forbid”, opening a can!
Homemade chicken soup has some wonderful healing properties. The best is made from organic, free range chicken parts (including neck and feet bones if possible); a gallon of purified water; one large organic onion; 3-5 garlic cloves smashed; 4-5 cut up stalks of celery and 1 scraped cut up organic carrot. Put these all in a pot and bring it to a boil. Turn down the heat to simmer and cover. Let this simmer for about 8-10 hours (24 is best) so if you have a crock pot now is the time to switch it over to the crock pot and put on lowest setting. The longer this simmers the better. When it is strained and refrigerated it should gel. This will tell you that you have gotten the goodness out of the bone. If you are only going to simmer for 8 hours put a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in it to help get the minerals out of the bone. If you are using breast portions, take them out after the hour is up and refrigerate to use in another recipe.
If you have some “on hand” remedies you could shorten the duration or avoid the sickness all together. Chicken soup is one homemade remedy that has some real evidence behind it. There are many herbal formulas that assist the body in not only getting well but staying well. If you have them on hand, the duration of illness is shortened exponentially.
This coming Saturday I will be teaching a class on some old time remedies that have been made easy by putting them in capsules so you can have them on hand in case of emergency. (this class will be recorded –if you would like a CD of it, contact me. The cost is $15 and that includes the handouts) Before NSP (the first company to encapsulate herbs), people had to brew teas and grind up herbs to make a nasty tasting potion. Now you can get the same health benefits by taking capsules.
How would you like to knock out a cold in a few hours (instead of it hanging on for a week or two)? I have done it and so can you. These remedies have been time tested and have helped millions of people for hundreds of years. In the case of the Chinese remedies—thousands of years! The safety factor is high because you are using food that has the highest quality. Don’t just cover up an illness—help the body get back into balance. Understand what the body is trying to do when it mounts a fever or makes you sneeze. Learn what you can do to assist the body in clearing out the toxins that have created discomfort.
What do you do when you wake up sick? Do you try to muddle through your day taking all kinds of over the counter medications to find you are only sicker by the end of the day? Do you know what your body is trying to tell you? You aren’t a voodoo doll that someone is sticking pins into—you’re a human with imbalances. The faster you understand what those imbalances are and how to right them with the proper remedies the quicker you will be able to pass the roadblock and get on with your plans.
