Good Morning!
As autumn begins, I look forward to the leaves turning into brilliant reminders of what is beneath the chlorophyll layer of green. The gorgeous gold, russet, brilliant reds and orange leaves just pop out, especially when the sun is shining on them. What do you like most about fall? Is it cider, apples, or the crisp air that seems so clean (unless of course your neighbor is burning leaves). To some people Fall is a reminder that summer is over and “the dark days” are coming.
If you are particularly affected by the lack of sun, you might have low levels of D. D3 is the answer to those dark days where we don’t get to see the sun very often. Lack of D3 can contribute to depression, lowered immune response and a whole host of illnesses. It would be a good idea to get your D levels checked with a blood test—many doctors will do this for you if you ask. “For maintenance, take 2,000 to 4,000 IU a day of vitamin D3. NSP carries D3 in a “non oil” form. By taking just 2-3 per day most people can get their levels of D up to optimum in a very short time. Be sure you have enough D to deal with today’s health concerns. The best time to take D3 is in the morning (when the sun rises). You will get some D with Calcium as it helps the body to absorb calcium. However, when you are taking a stand alone D product you want to take it in the morning and your calcium in the evening. If too much D is taken with Calcium it won’t reach the bones. True Colors is an expression that discloses what a person, or organization is all about. This week I read a disclosure of the American Cancer Society and its misuse of funds. We’ve long known that the FDA is in the pocket of the Pharmaceutical Industry. This week Dr. Mercola wrote an article that further discloses the underhanded and cruel acts these large companies do to a person who is struggling with an illness. Herbal eGram #551 Pigeon Hole
Good Morning!
In Herbal Medicine we have been known to pigeon hole herbs and categorize them according to specific conditions. For example—we think of Cascara Sagrada as an herb that helps to stimulate colon response. It does many other things in the body but has been noted for this and so pigeon holed as a supplement to use when constipated. It may not always be the best supplement for this condition but most people who have a little knowledge about herbs will use it for that reason.
In the class on Neurological Imbalances, I relate that some people are imbalanced in their nervous system. Generally we love being touched and massage feels great—but to some people it is irritating. Some people like lots of activity going on and others simply want to chill out. Learn to tell if you are on sensory overload and if so, is there something you may have eaten to create this over-sensitivity; or perhaps it’s an activity that puts you on edge.
Our world is full of sensory input. Most of us have cell phones and we keep them close to us. When someone calls you, before you answer a signal has to connect with a tower and then it can signal the caller. When the caller picks up that cell phone has to connect with a signal and then connect to your cell phone. It is a technological miracle how this works. We also know that if we are in a tunnel and there is no signal—we lose the call due to the lack of connection.
Our body has electrical output and we absorb vibrations all the time. Our body has a rhythm of its own. If we have a cell phone, computer or any other electrical device that uses electrical impulses we are interrupting our energy. So, perhaps the fact that you are low in energy may be that you have been picking up the wrong rhythm from all the electrical input/output you are exposed to on a daily basis.
Most of us take for granted the subtleties of the world around us. We may not always be aware of the sights, sounds, or smells in our environment. However, our brain is continuously processing signals sent through our eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and skin. In addition to the traditional five senses, scientists now recognize other kinds of sensations, including pain, pressure, temperature, joint position, and movement.
Specialized sensory neurons respond to input from the environment. This input is then transmitted to the brain as electrochemical signals. In the brain, signals are received in categories. Thus the processing of sensory input begins with specific regions in the brain separately deciphering each message. Subsequently, multiple types of sensory input are integrated, thus allowing the mass of information to be interpreted into an appropriate (motor) response.
When you have consistently high input such as the flashing of TV imagery, the brain is deciphering these impulses and deciding on how the body should respond to the images. The fact that one portion of our brain knows that the images aren’t real—has nothing to do with the fact that our brain still is trained to respond and causing chemical messengers to generate functions and responses throughout our body.
Our body will respond to fright in the same way if it is imaginary or real. The brain sets certain pathways and responses in motion to deal with the fear. When this energy does not result in an active response (running or fighting—flight or fight) the body then has to send other chemical messengers to calm the response. This mechanism uses up our ability to respond properly when the real thing happens. Like the Boy Who Cried—Wolf! The adrenal glands get worn out and we are exhausted all the time.
How we’ve learned to deal with this exhaustion is to stimulate with caffeine and other stimulating substances. This is not healthy. What we need to do is decide what stress we are going to allow into our lives and what we can eliminate. We also need to nurture the stress response mechanisms.
I love the herbal recipe EnergV. Right away you think—this is a supplement that will give me energy! And yes, you’d be right in that. The herbs in Energ-V support a healthy nervous system. There are herbs that help the body rebuild and there are herbs that calm while allowing normal responses to occur. Most drugs will deaden these responses and the brain sends out the signal but the body can’t receive the signal. This can create confusion between the brain and the body.
Sometimes, the nervous system needs protein to build in the form of amino acids. This supplement contains both Bee Pollen and Barley Grass which are rich sources of balanced amino acids, enzymes, vitamins and minerals which help the body repair. You won’t get this from any drug.
Our brain needs good fat and healthy protein. If you understand that most of us do better by eating some protein for breakfast, you can understand how this recipe would be a great addition to a morning supplementation regimen as it has such a wonderful balance of amino acids—the reason we need to eat protein. Some of the other herbs in Energ-V are Eleuthero and Schizandra—both of these herbs are Adaptogens. Adaptogenic herbs help the body deal with stress. Licorice root helps to strengthen the adrenal glands that respond to stress and Kelp supports the thyroid which is often affected by stress. Yellow dock supports liver and gall bladder to calm them and help the body reduce heat and inflammation; while the herb gota kola supports better brain function.
The bottle recommends that adults take 2 capsules twice a day (generally 2 at breakfast and 2 at lunch). Most bottle recommendations are for 150 pound person so if you weigh more than that you should adjust accordingly and if you weigh less—dividing 4 into 150 works out to be roughly 1 capsule for every 40 pounds. I have had children as young as five years old taking Energ-V and seeing some very good responses in calming anger and agitation.
The herbs in the combination Energ-V are not addictive, nor harmful. These herbs support the health of the immune, circulatory and nervous systems and are considered by experts as tonic herbs. Because they are not stimulants in themselves, but supportive herbs, it may take as much as 2 to 3 weeks to see a measurable difference. One should also be doing a food diary to match how one feels on a daily basis to determine if their program is working. Listening to your body is very important when trying to improve health. Having the guidance of a natural health practitioner may be needed if you feel your program isn’t working.
Western medicine likes to pigeon hole by diagnosing and prescribing conditions and matching them up with prescription drugs that control the condition. Natural Health Practitioners will look at the person and determine what is the body showing us and how can we help it regain balance. Good Morning!
Do you need an Electrolyte replacement drink? Electrolytes are lost during times of sweating such as in exercise or stress. However, it also happens when the body loses fluids in cases of vomiting or diarrhea. Other areas of concern are with certain medications such as diuretics and cancer therapy.
Babies and children lose electrolytes as well and some people follow the prescribed method of using Pedialyte drink to replace those lost minerals. However, is it really healthy for a child? Look at some of the ingredients in these drinks. Aside from that, they are costly! What alternatives are available? First, I recommend you learn about electrolytes and their importance: http://www.causeof.org/electrolytes.htm The second thing I want you to consider is water is the main ingredient you need to replace during times of extreme exercise, stress and illness.
According to Dr. Bhatmanghelidj your body is crying for water. We confuse hunger and thirst. Our food is dehydrating us and so are the fluids we tend to use to hydrate! All fluids are not created equal and when you are sick, you need to make sure you have the right fluids available for the purpose intended. Our health truly depends on good quality water and enough to meet the body’s demands.
Water is the basis of all life and that includes your body. Your muscles that move your body are 75% water; your blood, the transport system and delivers nutrients, is 82% water; your lungs that provide your oxygen are 90% water; your brain that is the control center of your body is 76% water; even your bones are 25% water. When you are dehydrated, you need water first! Don’t just grab the G drink!--Especially young children, who don’t sweat as much as adults, and who are far more susceptible to the sugar and coloring in Electrolyte replacement drinks.
Consuming a high fructose drink after exercise is a sure way to increase your insulin production and affect weight gain—not loss; according to HGH magazine.
"A high sugar meal after working out, or even a recovery drink (containing high sugar) after working out, will stop the benefits of exercise induced HGH. You can work out for hours, then eat a high sugar candy bar or have a high sugar energy drink, and this will shut down the synergistic benefits of HGH.
Why should you be concerned about Human Growth Hormone? HGH controls and regulates all other naturally produced hormones, including IGF-1 (Insulin-like growth factor-1), a liver hormone responsible for albumin production. IGF is a significant factor in muscle strength, but not only muscle strength but all lean tissue, including vital organs and glands. Since the heart is a muscle—this should concern all of us.
Exponentiation of this theory (or study), would leave us with: high intake of sugar before, during or after exercise can not only increase our weight via insulin production but also affect our overall muscle strength. Is this not counter to why someone exercises in the first place?! It seems like defeating the purpose when someone exercises to be healthy and perhaps uses it as a means in weight control or loss. Therefore, it would not be conducive to drink something that counters the very triggers we are trying to tweak.
HGH is produced in the anterior lobe of the Pituitary, a pea sized gland near the center of the brain. Peak levels of this hormone were found to occur during the growth stage, drop off significantly after the age of 12; and by the age of 35 to 40 remain relatively constant into old age. In 1985, Dr. Keith Kelley pondered the decline in growth hormone levels and the shrinking of the Thymus Gland, which produces the hormone that controls our immune system. By age 12, it begins to shrink and loses function.
When children drink “energy drinks” that are high in fructose and/or sugar and we know that these substances can affect HGH production, it seems that we are messing with their healthy growth processes by giving them these drinks on a regular basis. We also know that many children do not eat a good balanced diet. So, what are the alternatives for those people who are “picky” eaters? Obviously everyone should take a Multi-Vitamin that includes minerals and is food based—not chemical based. It should not include dyes or sugar.
When one is sick and has lost fluids through vomiting and/or diarrhea—water should be their first choice. Some other choices would be juicing whole foods such as veggies and fruit such as apples (these can be watered down to half juice and half water). Another would be to use liquid minerals that are balanced and can assist with quick recovery from illness such as Ionic Minerals from Nature’s Sunshine. A few drops can be added to apple juice for children who have been sick. (150 pound person would take 2 tablespoons per day; 75 pound child—1 tablespoon; 25 pound child—1 teaspoon and a baby could take up to ¼ teaspoon) This could replace all the minerals the body uses.
If one needed to add more of the electrolyte minerals, you could take one stick pack of the Solstic Revive and add it to 16 ounces of water with the above amount of minerals. Because Solstic is not made with sugar and is sweetened with Stevia, it would not harm the insulin production, or trigger a negative response in HGH production.
A healthy diet of fresh fruits and vegetables should supply us with minerals, including the ones that help balance electrolytes. When we are sick and don’t eat right, those minerals can become imbalanced and cause a myriad of problems. It is also a concern with certain medications that cause us to lose liquids such as diuretics. Back to babies for a minute:
When babies are sick they will lose their electrolytes—are drinks like Pedialyte really safe? If you look at the ingredients—I wonder! Many people state that the dyes and flavoring in this popular drink are harmful but the doctors recommend it because the importance of getting these vital nutrients back into the body can mean life or death. What about a safer alternative?
Should children take Sodium Bicarbonate in recommended “homemade versions of electrolyte replacement drinks? One website state that children should never ingest Baking Soda. And the Kool-Aid suggested in this recipe is nothing but chemicals. So, what do you do when you’re a parent seeking advice? Do what the doctor says even though you look at the label and cringe? It is a tough decision to make. I think that Pedialyte is just as bad as Gatorade or other so-called sports drinks. We are taking in dyes and sugars when our body is most vulnerable.
What should I have on hand when I’ve been sick with the flu to keep my fluids balanced? Is water enough? Water should be the first choice. If you are concerned, make sure you are at least supplementing with a whole food based vitamin/mineral. Don’t feed your body dyes and sugar. Eat some fresh fruit—suck on an organic orange, or chew on an apple. If you can’t get any food down—drink the Revive drink above and add the Ionic Minerals. This generally will boost your energy in a very short time and then you can eat properly beginning with some homemade broths. The whole purpose for most of us in exercise is to be healthy, lose weight and keep our body fit. Don’t defeat this with a drink that is counter to health. Use something that helps the body regain strength and doesn’t mess with hormones such as insulin or Growth Hormone.
September’s focus is on children’s health—some of us still have issues stemming from poor health as a child. It is never too late to correct imbalances. Maybe you were told you’d grow out of your allergies, or “it’s just baby fat”. Just because you aren’t caring for children is no reason to miss this information. For years I’ve been preaching the importance of taking Probiotics and their relationship to the immune system. I just recently learned about Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, a medical doctor in the UK, who has written a book about the relationship of our gut flora and autism and other neurological concerns in children. In her book, Gut and Psychology Syndrome, she not only confirms that relationship, but is in agreement with, Dr. Doris Rapp who relates allergies to gut health. wwwDorisRappMD.com I would encourage you to read the GAPS book, however it is very expensive. In just reading the transcript and going to her website, I’m impressed with her work and her research into this very important area of health.
I believe that Dr. Michael Gershon’s book, The Second Brain, brought the gut’s relationship to the immune and nervous system into light for others to study. Dr. Gershon explained that Neurogastroenterology actually had its beginnings in the early nineteenth century—under the same conditions that Ebenezer Scrooge existed. England’s notorious fog; smut from coal stoves and poor sanitation all brewed together to create an atmosphere far removed from today’s sterile laboratories most scientists work in. These pioneers of science knew that the ill-tempered bowel was responsible for many ill-tempered people.
Children are not the only ones who deal with neurological disorders and allergies. Many adults have allergies and struggle with neurological concerns such as cognitive brain functions and balance issues. The relationship to mucosal fluid throughout the body is a critical aspect of flora and gut health. This fluid is also found in the ear, sinus cavities, and bathing every cell of our body. It makes sense that if the fluid carries with it viruses and bad bacteria because it is malfunctioning we would have certain physical responses. Those responses can be behavioral, as well as, physical.
An allergic response can be as simple as a runny nose, diarrhea or as complicated as schizophrenia or autism. The health of the mucosal fluid and its reactivity can be corrected through diet and the use of probiotics and supplemental nutrients along with the avoidance of those environmental elements that contribute to the response by the immune system.
Adhering to a food regimen is generally the first step along with taking probiotics. Many things can trigger responses so one has to investigate with questions like: when did I start feeling this way; what did I eat, or not eat—often waiting too long to eat can trigger a response; what were my emotions like; what was my environment like? Since you are with your body 24/7, you are the best to determine what, when and where. If you are working with a child, you will have to do a diary and see the connections when responses are unhealthy.

Gut health not only affects allergic responses, the process of elimination, digestion and our immune response, it also affects our ability to think clearly and make good decisions. Taking probiotics daily is an important part of being healthy and proactive. Getting healthy is a whole lot harder than staying healthy. The experts agree that the least one can do is supplement daily with good probiotics to compensate for our diet and stress. Optimally, one should take a whole food multi-vitamin and mineral; Omega 3 essential fat, Probiotics, Enzymes and antioxidants.
We live in stressful times and do not eat properly. Our environment is not healthy and the foods we do eat are altered from the healthy foods many of our ancestors ate. Even 50 years ago most people ate homemade and home grown food; they ate out rarely. This story has flipped—the homemade meal is a rarity and often done only at Holidays. Dessert is daily and often more than daily. Gut health has never been more compromised. Healing the gut is the beginning of healing the body and the mind. A good start would be to take two Probiotics upon rising and two before bed.
If you experience gas and bloating worse than what you had before beginning this routine you may have to back off to where you are comfortable (even 1 every other day) and build up to the recommended amounts. The die off of microbes is causing the gas and bloating and the good bacteria cannot keep up with the die off. Fatigue and fuzzy thinking will also be something to watch. You may be experiencing these symptoms right now and this is a sign that your gut is crying for attention.
There is no harm done when one takes probiotics—there is no toxic dose. Therefore, one judges by how one feels. In general, you will feel more energy, clearer thinking and have healthy stool production. Drinking water is also important to the mucosal fluid—drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily to make sure your body can flush out the toxins it has collected. And stop putting toxins in the body (or at least minimize them).

Recently my daughter in law, Carol, posted a picture of a mushroom she found in her back yard. It sent me on a journey of discovery. I usually allow time for research but I could get lost in the fascinating subject of fungi. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly!
There are some really disgusting looking funguses: For example: corn smut which attacks corn and looks like a brain. In Mexico it is considered a delicacy and has been found high in lysine—a beneficial amino acid. Fungus come in blue, green, black, red and every other color you can imagine. Many mushrooms grow from the mulch we put down. Some pop up in the lawn and some look like slime in between the sidewalks or grow on wood decks. Some are good to eat and actually fight disease and others contribute to it. Knowing the difference between a mushroom (or fungus) that can deter cancer and one that can kill you may take an expert.
Many cancer therapies include mushrooms such as Reishi, Maitake and Shitake. Immune supports may also include: Cordyceps--belongs to the family of numerous mushrooms, which are, actually, parasitic organisms, growing wildly on the caterpillars in the high plateaus of China, Nepal, and Tibet. The fruiting body of Cordyceps looks like grass. That is why it is called Winter Worm - Summer Grass besides Deer Fungus, Caterpillar Fungus, and Aweto. NSP has found a way to grow Cordyceps on rice making it cheaper to produce and still an effective immune support.
Many of you have probably eaten portabella mushrooms. These can range from baby size to huge dinner plate size. Although often used as a meat replacement it is actually about 69% carbohydrate. Beef is actually 67% fat (depending on the cut) and both are between 27 and 33% protein. Beef is a complete protein providing all the essential amino acids and portabella is not. So you need to add other food to complete the essential amino acid requirement.
One area of my research concurred something I’ve always thought—there is a huge relationship to many disease conditions and fungus, particularly cancer. http://www.curenaturalicancro.com/2-candida-cancer-always.html Candida albicans is a fungal problem where the overgrowth of yeast overwhelms the immune system. Since yeast is fed by sugar and we Americans love our sugar, it stands to reason that we are riddled with yeast infections. Maybe you’ve heard that you should use bleach on black mold. Myth disclosed -- chlorine bleach has absolutely no lasting effect on killing mold! Chlorine bleach off-gases for a period of time. Chlorine off gassing can be harmful to humans and animals. It has been known to cause pulmonary embolisms in low resistant and susceptible people. It is also a component of DIOXIN which is known to cause cancer. Aside from breathing in this toxin, touching it can cause the skin to uptake the chemical contributing to destruction of mucus membranes via the blood stream. It is a biohazard to mix ammonia and bleach—your urine and your pet’s urine have ammonia in it. Are you getting the picture? If you’ve left chlorine bleach in your toilet overnight and then urinate into it in the morning you can mix these two chemicals causing a biohazard. How about those so called “automatic toilet bowl cleaners”? If they have bleach in them and you add your urine to it, you are creating a biohazard when you flush. Remember there is no new water. Most water going into your toilet has some chlorine in it from the water treatment plant. Adding more chlorine to the water just makes our water that much more toxic.

Many parents are looking forward to sending their children back to school about now. You can see the school clothes and paraphernalia in stores wherever you go. This email is not about vaccines. It is about real health protection for children and their immune system through supplementation. We all know it is important to eat right, get enough sleep and to exercise. We also know how picky children can be about their food choices and the concern that they are getting enough nutrients for their growing bodies and developing minds. Good nutrition gives the body the tools it needs to defend you against harmful microbes. From nutrition your body gleans antioxidants.
Antioxidants are specific nutrients that fight free radicals and inflammation in the body. When the body produces energy it uses combustion—wherever you have combustion you have inflammation. You know this by the fact that when you shut your car off after driving for a bit, the hood of your car is hot—so is the tailpipe. Another way of thinking of inflammation is to vigorously rub your hands together. This causes friction—the principle of microwave energy.
Free radicals have a missing electron which contributes to confusion at the cell level and heat. Antioxidants have lots of electrons that can be donated to the unstable free radicals thereby reducing inflammation and immune challenges. Most antioxidants are found in fruits and vegetables. The American Cancer Society recommends between 6-10 servings of these foods per day. The average person does not get enough antioxidants and therefore taking a supplement that is rich in these nutrients is recommended.
Supplementation is a bridge for those times when you know you or your child is not getting the balance of food necessary to maintain health. If you or your child is already immune challenged because of allergies then you know you need extra support for the immune system. Allergies are not normal. Allergies mean your body is struggling with your environment and it needs help. Most of the time allergies are because the immune system is already overtaxed.
Our American diets are full of nutrition robbers: sugar, nutrient poor food such as chips and snack food; sugarless and artificial flavoring and coloring of food; lack of pure water etc. Do you know how to help give your body what it needs? It can be confusing with the pyramid suggestions and pros and cons of vegetarian—no milk, yes milk advice one sees and hears about. One thing we know for sure is that eating whole foods are better than eating foods that are processed. If it comes with a nutrition label—it is processed in some way. Apples and other fruit and veggies don’t generally have a nutrition label on it telling you the sugar and fat content.
Sugar and fat are not the only things we need to look at in food choices. There is considerable fat in an avocado but the fat is good fat that is used in our body for supporting healthy brains and skin. Whole grains are not tolerated by a lot of people—so where do you get your fiber? Apple skin has the most nutrition unless of course, it is full of pesticides.
Eating healthy does take a lot of thought and preparation. Being healthy is worth it. If you have to take short cuts at least take supplements to give your body the basic nutrients it needs in times of stress. Basic to good health: Multi-Vitamin and mineral supplement; a good Omega –preferably DHA or Omega 3 EPA; Antioxidant to fight free radical damage; Probiotics to keep the internal environment healthy and drink plenty of pure water. Other supports would be a fiber to keep toxins moving out and enzymes to help digest and absorb the good nutrients you eat.

The other day I drove past a drug store (yes, I still consider them that even though most of them want you to think “pharmacy”). The sign out front said: “Required Whooping Cough vaccines”. So, I thought – Since when? We still live in a free country where we still have the right to determine our own health path. The government does not have the right to stop you from earning an education or from earning an income if you do not follow their health mandates. This is still the law in the United States.
The economic wheels in this country are turned by the pharmaceutical industry and they naturally want to sell you vaccines. Since the flu vaccine is seriously outdated they have decided to campaign with the whooping cough vaccine. Until recently this vaccine was given to only children, but the pharmaceutical industry saw how they were missing out on a whole market of potential customers—adults. How could they create a demand in the adult market place—target those adults who work with children. Convince the government that those adults are actually putting the children they work with in harm’s way.
What the pharmaceutical industry doesn’t want you to know: there is strong evidence that vaccines will not eradicate whooping cough. http://www.nvic.org/NVIC-Vaccine-News/July-2010/Whooping-Cough-Outbreaks-Vaccine-Failures.aspx The truth is that, whether you are vaccinated or not, you can get a mild or serious case of whooping cough from B. pertussis or B. parapertussis organisms. And both whooping cough disease and pertussis vaccines carry a risk of injury or death, which can be greater for some than others. The thing is if you do come down with whooping cough (pertussis) naturally you will be protected for life. Your immune system can identify invasive organisms that it has already set up immunity for and attack them.
This mom states: “After my precocious two year old son suffered a convulsion, collapse/shock and brain inflammation following his fourth DPT shot in 1980 and was left with multiple learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder…” I wonder if in fact the “precociousness” of the child was not contributed to by the earlier shots and finally his body had enough and ended up collapsing. Vaccines do not support the immune system—they challenge it. If the immune system is already compromised this type of challenge can cause damage that is not reversible (or at least not easily reversed).
Physicians are brain washed in medical school to believe that vaccines are the right way to eradicate disease. I know they also learn about the immune system—why do they not put two and two together? Babies do not have fully developed immune responses and should (in my opinion) never receive vaccines. In many European countries who vaccinate children do not receive vaccines until they are two or older. In our country by the time a child is two years old they have received 26 inoculations and up to five shots at once. How can this not affect a child whose immune system is just stabilizing by this time?
If they really worked—why would you need boosters? The whole vaccine idea is not reasonable or logical. If you take the vaccine, you will have to be injected continuously for the rest of your life. Sounds like a win/win for the drug industry! Your immune system does not set up life-long antibodies when you are vaccinated.
Vaccines may have many other properties such as heavy metals, adjutants that are toxic, and immune system disruptors and they come with no guarantee. I liken a vaccine to “a war on microbes”. If your body is attacked naturally your first immune response—the mucus membranes start producing more mucus to protect the tender linings and to flush out the invading organism. This is when our nose runs and our eyes water. When we do not have enough liquid (haven’t drunk enough water) the mucus becomes thick and congested too fast and the next step of the immune system can’t work fast enough.

It seems to me it would be better to support our immune system in minimizing the desirability of the host for a condition like whooping cough or other viruses to harbor. We weaken our immune system with stress, sugar and starchy foods, poor sleeping habits and low activity. Drinking adequate amounts of water and staying hydrated is well known as a good immune supporting idea. During the hot days of summer, some people will choose drinks that actually dehydrate and not hydrate the body and therefore we assist in compromising our immune function.
Many herbs help assist with prevention and minimizing the immune challenge of microbial invasion. There is a plethora of choices to support the immune system; a couple of my favorite ones are Olive Leaf extract and Elderberry. These food-type immune supports can be taken daily to help the immune system in its effort to keep up healthy.
Nobody eats right 100% of the time and therefore it is important to supplement our diet with immune aids in the form of herbs—specific food. If you do end up suffering the effects of poor diet and lack of supplementation by getting a cold or flu—that further works itself into whooping cough or pneumonia, diffusing Helichrysum essential oil is known to break up mucus and make breathing easier while you supplement to support better respiratory health.
Vitamin D deficiency contributes to a weakened immune response-- “researchers found that those with less than 10 nanograms of vitamin D per milliliter of blood, considered low, were nearly 40 percent more likely to have had a respiratory infection than those with vitamin D levels of 30 ng or higher. The finding was consistent across all races and ages.”
Take a proactive approach that makes sense and has been time tested for centuries. Use an herbal supplement to support immune health, eat right, get good rest and exercise and drink adequate amounts of water. If you aren’t sure your health path is working for you, seek help from a qualified natural health practitioner. Be informed—don’t just follow the crowd. Think for yourself and look at the evidence.
The circus barkers of the pharmaceutical industry want you to believe their drugs are going to protect you but they do not stand up under the evidence so they have to bark louder. In this information age most people are checking things out for themselves and coming up with questions the industry can’t answer. Herbal medicine is practiced and honored in all countries but ours and our country is the sickest of all nations. Where is the common sense in that?

Herbal eGram #545 Cell cleansing
Good Morning!
Many people focus on colon cleansing and today I want to share with you some insight on cleansing at the cell level. When there is congestion at the cell level nutrients and toxins cannot move freely. Nutrients need to get into the cells and toxins that form from metabolic reactions need to move out of the cells. In order for this process to happen we need a healthy functioning sodium/potassium exchange known as the Sodium/Potassium Pump.
Processed food and salty snacks like pretzels, potato chips etc. can interfere with the exchange of fluids causing the cells to hold onto their sodium ions. This causes the cell to swell. It also causes blood pressure to escalate. Along with the salty snacks we drink fluids that dehydrate us! These salty snacks make us thirsty so we drink alcoholic beverages, soda pop or iced tea—all of which dehydrate the body lessening the amount of fluid necessary to regulate the sodium potassium pump.
When toxins cannot leave the cell and the cell starts to swell it allows for the correct environment for microbes to get into the cell and set up housekeeping. Parasitical microbes do not necessarily need fluid exchange to occur. They can enter the cell through ion exchange via electrical charge. Attraction of this type just attracts more of these microbes until you end up with a mass of tissue debris. To cleanse this debris one must first stop feeding it (no more chips etc.); drink a healthy amount of water; and encourage the sodium potassium exchange to occur.
Increasing your water intake to half your body weight in ounces of water on a daily basis allows for the proper amount of fluid necessary to carry nutrients in and toxins out. Since potassium has been depleted due to the high intake of bad salt, a potassium supplement that has nutrients in it to assist in the potassium getting into the cell is extremely beneficial. Most potassium supplements do not have the addition of amino acids and minerals that assist potassium in the exchange mechanism.
NSP’s Potassium Combination has kelp, alfalfa, horsetail and horseradish to assist in potassium’s journey into the cell for exchange of sodium (from all those bad foods). Since you are now changing the environment and the debris has nothing to feed on—it too will leave providing you have enough fluid for it to enter. This exchange will once again allow sodium and potassium to flow properly pumping nutrients into the cell and keep you healthy.
I have also found it helpful for some people to put a taste of a full mineral salt such as NSP’s Sea Salt into the palm of their hand and lick it then follow with 8-10 ounces of purified water. The Sea Salt will allow the water to assist with the sodium/potassium exchange mechanism. Dr. B. discusses this in one his lectures on the need for salt and water. The lack of good hydration and poor diet is a contributing factor to high blood pressure and heart disease. It also causes cell congestion leading to other disease conditions forming cysts, tumors and tissue congestion. The right kind of salt and a healthier diet can support the health of the cell and assist in cellular exchange of harmful debris for beneficial nutrient absorption.
If you have pain there is generally swelling—if you have swelling, you might consider how much water are you drinking and try the salt/water idea above. Do it three times during the day making sure you are drinking half your body weight in ounces of water and see if your pain lessens. I do not recommend table salt as it is in my opinion poison. The processing of regular salt takes out any balancing minerals that the salt had and which we need for the sodium/potassium exchange to occur properly.
Many people who have cysts or tumors find it helpful to take herbal supplements that assist with breaking down the congestion of debris for the body to remove. All Cell Detox has herbs that help with this process. However, understand that the kidneys must be healthy to be able to handle the additional work necessary to detoxify at this level since the cellular fluid happens in the lymphatic system and this system dumps into the urinary system. If you already have an irritated urinary system you don’t want to further stimulate it with removing cellular debris via the intake of more water.
Drinks such as coffee and caffeinated beverages—so called “Energy drinks” can over stimulate the urinary system causing harm to the kidneys. Eliminating these drinks would be the first thing you want to do to calm the kidneys down. Many medications also irritate the kidneys so watch for side effects listed with you medications or talk to a pharmacist about kidney damage due to drugs. In any case, drinking pure water and adding some liquid chlorophyll will assist your urinary system and support the health of the blood.
Diabetes and High Blood Pressure are both contributing factors in kidney disease. Protecting your kidneys with healthy water intake and eating a balanced diet is important for not only elimination of toxins but also reducing your risks for long term kidney damage. Talk to your doctor about the medications you are taking and talk with a nutritional consultant on how you can improve your body’s functions with natural supplementation. Pain is an indication that there is swelling—what is contributing to the swelling? Be your own detective and look at what your body is indicating instead of trying to cover it up with pain killers. Try the salt lick and water technique for a day and see how you feel—eliminate the foods that may be contributing to your pain.
If you can, do a cleanse at the cell level or at least try some Potassium combination to support better cell exchange and above all—make water your drink choice.

Herbal eGram #544 Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A)
Good Morning!
The Hamilton Anxiety Scale or HAM-A is the gold standard test for anxiety done by most psychiatrists to determine the level of anxiety a person has. From that level they determine the medication they will prescribe. I find it interesting that there are no questions asking if a person takes a whole food source vitamin B supplement. There is a huge relationship to anxiety/depression when a person has low levels of B vitamins.
Most medical websites don’t even consider the complex or whole B supplement—they only have information on B -12 (maybe because that is the one they administer in shot form). B vitamins are found in complex form in many foods and especially plentiful in Spirulina—a water source vegetable found naturally in alkaline lakes around Mexico and Africa. Commercially it is produced and harvested in Japan where the people there value its high nutrient content. It is found to have all of the B vitamins, Amino Acids (being 60-70% protein); mineral rich including iodine and a good source of GLA. NSP has Spirulina in capsule form and in combinations such as Super Algae. It is a great way for vegetarians to get the B vitamins and protein they need.
Many people having allergies and on food restrictive diets are often deficient in B vitamins and need to obtain these water soluble elements that are very important for our nervous system and other functions of the body. Some people are allergic to anything from the sea; wheat and/or dairy. A great source of naturally occurring B vitamins and amino acids can be found in Bee Pollen. To test allergic response you can open a capsule and take out one of the granules and eat it with a meal. Each day increase the amount of granules until you are taking an entire capsule. Research shows that Bee Pollen has long been used as an anti-allergen medicine successfully. Bee Pollen can significantly reduce the mast cell production that is part of the histamine response when allergens are perceived by the immune system.
During times of stress B vitamins are used up and the modern day diet of processed food, soda, coffee and alcohol along with stress rob the body of these needed nutrients. Your nervous system needs a steady supply of these helpful vitamins to function properly. Since they are water soluble it is very difficult to get too much. There are no toxic levels of B vitamins when taken in complete form. If you take a single B such as niacin you can throw off the delicate balance of the other forms of B vitamins. If you are taking a single such as B6 or B12 it is recommended to take a complex source at another time during the day to make sure you don’t disrupt the balance needed by your nervous system.
There are studies being done on the relationship between cancer and B vitamin deficiency. However, I think it is more the lack of enzymes to break down these nutrients and the environment of the gut wall not allowing the B vitamins to be absorbed and manufactured by these friendly bacteria. I think the research will find that the relationship between friendly bacteria and the loss of B vitamins are directly contributing to the correct environment for abnormal cell growth. Antibiotics destroy friendly bacteria and interrupt the balance necessary for B vitamin metabolism and absorption.
Before anyone chooses to take an anti-depressant medication I would hope they make sure they are taking adequate levels of a whole food supplement that supplies their body with B vitamins. I particularly love the supplement Nutri- Calm as it includes Nervine herbs that support the health of the nervous system while supplying the body with B vitamins and C for good absorption. The interesting thing I have found is that Nutri Calm can relax you and energize you at the same time. If you need to sleep—it can help. If you need to focus—it can help. Super Supplemental also supplies the body with good levels of B vitamins but some people need the addition of Nutri Calm when they are under a lot of stress. I think anyone having the symptoms associated with the Hamilton Anxiety Scale should first try a couple of Nutri Calm a day and see how their symptoms change. I also feel that for proper absorption and health a person should take enzymes with their meals and probiotics away from meals. Metabolism and nutrient availability not only depend on high quality nutrients coming in but also the ability to break those nutrients down and absorption by the body. If the cells cannot absorb the nutrients because of digestive insufficiency then don’t waste your money.
Digestion is the key. If you don’t have good digestion—it matters not how healthy what you’re eating is—because the cells aren’t going to get what they need. I feel that many Americans struggle with good digestion and are told what they need is medicine that actually worsens the ability of the body to metabolize nutrients. We’re overfed and under-nourished! And although I am a strong proponent of taking supplements to assist with health, I feel that it is useless unless one is taking enzymes with meals and probiotics away from meals. These three keys will help a person protect the body against the ravages of stress and the end result of disease: Enzymes, Probiotics and a good source of B vitamins.
Health is not a “one-shot deal”. Health is a responsibility and needs constant attention. Every thing you do and every thought you think is going to either add to health or subtract from it. Your body is doing everything it can to maintain health—are you helping it?

Herbal eGram #543 High Five! Good Morning,
What does weight loss, sleeplessness, depression, PMS, fibromyalgia and migraine headaches have in common? They are all helped by taking the supplement 5HTP! 5-hydroxy-tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin which is dubbed “the happy hormone”. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in mood, appetite, behavior, and sleep. A deficiency may contribute to depression, eating disorders, headaches, PMS, violent behavior and aggression and sleep disorders.

Many headaches are a result of dehydration. When one takes 5HTP it can help you want to take better care of yourself and eat healthier foods because you see how good it is. Sometimes you just get into a funk and need a boost to get back on track—maybe this is the boost you were looking for!
5 HTP is readily absorbed from the gut and easily crosses the blood brain barrier to provide nutrients your brain is starving for in order to convert into serotonin. Serotonin turns into melatonin when the Pineal gland perceives night. Numerous double blind studies have found that taking 5 HTP an hour before bed is an effective treatment for sleep disorders. Make sure your bedroom is dark—no TV, or even LED lights as they will affect the Pineal’s ability to perceive darkness. Lagophthalmos is an inability to close eyelid completely, so wearing a sleep mask may be beneficial or room darkening blinds is another alternative.
Serotonin is one of the most important brain chemicals involved in mood, satiety, and feelings of well being. One study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, confirmed that 5-HTP supplementation can reduce carbohydrate intake and provide feelings of early satiety helping to benefit those who are seeking help with weight loss. 90% of those people taking the supplement were able to adhere to a 1200 calorie per day diet and still feel satisfied.
This supplement also includes Adaptogenic herbs that help the body deal with fatigue and stress. Herbal eGram #542 Sights and Sounds
Good Morning!
The 4th of July for many people culminate in the dazzling display of fireworks and hearing the boom of the rockets as they go soaring up into the sky. It’s generally an exciting time for children to run with sparklers in hand while making circles and letters. This was true for me too as we made the preparations for our annual festivities of watching the fireflies as the preamble to our fireworks display put on by one of our neighbors. I love sharing the festivities with our family. We even made home-made ice cream this year.
This time of the year is a good time to take stock of all the things we do have. Many people have been focusing on the bad economy and how “hard” times are. On the flip side—concert tickets for Kenny Chesney are on sale for $150.00 to $200.00 per person. And this is just one event that many people will be going to this summer. Obviously some people have money to spend. That one night will cost many people more than what it costs for an entire month’s worth of supplements to keep you healthy with nutrients shown to fight most disease.
Health is not something just granted to each person. We must pursue it in the way we eat, think and do. Our body is something that needs to be cared for and not just take advantage of until it is screaming for attention in the form of pain. The least one can do is take a multi vitamin and mineral supplement that is whole food based and take it often enough to make a difference.

Think about it—what would happen if every pharmacy in this country closed down? Would you be able to survive? Is this type of dependence healthy? Dr. Mercola asks: Are you ready to stand up for the right to follow your conscience and choose the kind of preventive health options you want for yourself and your children?
Right here in Michigan we are fighting for Health Freedom. Many of us have been active in the fight to bring a Health Freedom bill to Congress and get passed. You might want to know why we need a Health Freedom Bill. You need to have in document form that you choose to use natural means to protect your health and that you want your natural health advisor protected under law. The law for practicing medicine in this state is so broad that if you tell someone they should drink more water—you’re actually practicing medicine without a license and are liable to be put in jail and fined thousands of dollars. Every practitioner who is not a licensed medical doctor, and advises the use of herbal medicine could be thrown in jail because we cannot even mediate or prevent illness! –under the current law.

Here is what Rep. Johnson said when he introduced HB 4789: “Many Michigan residents, my family included, enjoy alternative health remedies as part of our healthcare options. Unfortunately, Michigan’s legal environment has vagaries that make it difficult for alternative health providers to offer even modest services. My bill would create the “Michigan Consumer Health Freedom Law,” which models similar acts in other states. The bill would allow alternative health providers to be able to offer choices to consumers without being subject to suit for unlawful practice of a health profession. It would not grant alternative health providers any authority to prescribe drugs, perform surgeries or any other medical activity reserved for licensed healthcare professionals. Additionally, they would have to state plainly that they are not licensed as health care professionals and provide such declarations to prospective consumers.”
