Herbal eGram #541 They still don’t get it!
Good Morning!
How arrogant can you be? The Food and Drug Administration is supposed to regulate food and drug safety. You tell me if you think they’re doing a good job! You happen to be the guinea pig. Most food is recalled after someone has gotten sick or died. They don’t inspect as they used to. Nature’s sunshine inspects at every phase of the process. They visit where the plants are grown; when they are harvested; once they arrive at the manufacturing facility and at every step along the way while it is being processed. Not many manufacturers do this. Not many manufacturers will pay millions of dollars annually to make sure you get therapeutically potent and pure supplements.
The arrogance of the FDA comes in when they make statements about a supplement whose safety has been proven by centuries of use --but because our drug manufacturers haven’t done any studies on them—they may not be safe. Have you checked the FDA’s track record—more than half of the FDA approved drugs in the last 5 years have been taken off the market due to increased risk factor of death when taking the drugs.
Let’s look at Red Yeast Rice for example: Studies have shown that red yeast rice can significantly lower levels of total cholesterol and specifically LDL, or "bad" cholesterol. One showed that taking 2.4 grams per day of red yeast rice reduced LDL levels by 22% and total cholesterol by 16% in 12 weeks. Another study showed that taking 1.2 grams per day lowered LDL levels by 26% in just eight weeks. These studies are done by independent scientists. In China, Red Yeast Rice has been used for centuries and not harmed anyone.
Now, do you think the manufacturers of Lipitor or Mevacor are going to do studies to show the effectiveness of Red Yeast Rice—get real! We all know the side effects of these drugs: fatigue; flu-like symptoms; Severe leg pain when walking, headaches, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, are some of the symptoms being reported. Some others deal with intimacy problems.
Red Yeast Rice is the whole fermented food, not an isolated chemical that synthesizes the action of the active ingredient. The active ingredient is often supported by the other constituents of the food and this is not taken into consideration by the pharmaceutical industry when they formulate drugs. Find out if Red Yeast Rice is right for you. Many people have been able to get their cholesterol in balance using Red Yeast Rice. Read more: http://hartonweb.com/nsp-herbs/bornforhealth.com/?sn=558-3
Is cholesterol really the “bad guy” in heart disease? Cholesterol is needed for hormone production and brain health. Actually, cholesterol is a very valuable and useful substance. “It provides the basic structure for the synthesis of steroid hormones and vitamin D and it is a major component of cell membranes, especially high in the brain and nervous system. In the liver it is converted into bile acids and bile salts needed for the digestion and absorption of all lipids and fat-related substances. However, if we are deficient in the emulsifier lecithin or in sulphur amino acids, cholesterol may accumulate as gall-stones”. http://www.health-science-spirit.com/cholesterol.html
What nutritional deficit happens when you take cholesterol reducing medication? It is now a well-known fact that cholesterol reducing drugs rob the heart of CoQ10. If you are taking a medication to lower cholesterol make sure you are supplementing with a high grade supplement of easily absorbed CoQ10. When you are deficient in this nutrient, symptoms may include angina, heart palpitations, heart muscle impairment, bleeding gums, mitral valve prolapse and may be a contributing factor in heart attack or stroke.
If you are also taking depression medication—this may compound the deficiency of CoQ10 along with creating a lack in folic acid and magnesium which are needed by the heart for health. CoQ10 is required for energy production in the mitochondria of the cells. A deficiency will harm all cell production causing us to feel like we’re “Running on Empty”. So, it is a vital nutrient not only for the heart and brain but the entire body.
Make sure you purchase a liquid crystal soft gel that has not been produced with chemical solvents. NSP provides a pure source of easily absorbed CoQ10 that is highly absorbable. The 50mg. supplement is like taking 150 or more mg. of other brands. Nature’s Sunshine does the testing so you can relax and .enjoy the benefits of the best nutrition available.
Have a healthy and joy filled week and remember to Be Brilliant!

Herbal eGram #540 Kicking the Food Pyramid
Good Morning!
If you were one of the very few people who understood the Food Pyramid—I applaud you. I, for one am glad to see it go. I’ve always advocated a sensible approach to eating healthy and that differs for most people. In my practice I will usually guide people with the Blood Type diet and balance it with Dr. Barry Sears approach of 30-40-30 Zone approach. Serving sizes are recommended based on the size of your opened hand.
The blood type diet was first introduced by Dr. Peter D’Adamo’s father and then he took the research further; wrote books about it and many people have benefitted from following it. Basically it is recommended foods that are accepted by your body. If you’d like to know more about this you can read one of the several books written about it or check out the website: http://www.dadamo.com/bloodtype_A.htm
Serving sizes based on your hand size makes sense to me. Looking at your opened hand flattened out you would put the full amount of complex carbohydrates your full hand represents—those could be broccoli, romaine, or a mix of vegetables at two meals per day. The palm of your hand would represent the amount of protein needed for two meals—about 3-4 ounces; and one tablespoon of healthy oil such as organic butter or olive oil. Breakfast could be a balanced meal such as a smoothie made from Smart Meal with some fruit blended in.
I think the Food Pyramid was just a battle between the food industries: The Meat and Dairy association and the grain industry. It really wasn’t about what was healthy for you. Starchy carbohydrates are fine if you are a starving nation—we are not. We are a nation of 2/3 adult obesity and diseases of premature aging.
Grains put weight on you and so do starchy carbohydrates like potatoes. Recently, USA Today News reported on a study that found the worst culprit for weight gain was potato chips. It is one of the favored foods in the summer. Only 15 chips equal 160 calories. Most people will eat a whole bag full which is way more than the recommended for an individual serving. Same with soda pop—one bottle is generally more than one serving.
A 12 ounce can of beer is generally 143 calories but if you go to the more exotic ones it can go as high as 300 calories. Now you know where a “beer belly” comes from. Most people munch with their beer and so you add that to the caloric mix and the fact that there are no nutrient value to those foods and worse yet, you are taxing your antioxidant reserves—you’re looking at some major unhealthy fun. If done on occasion it is one thing; if however it is routine then you know where your ill health culprit is.
Our children are struggling with weight issues all because of improper knowledge of what and why it is important to eat properly. One out of five children is overweight. Many children don’t eat fresh food like raw fruit, veggies and home cooked meals. They drink soda pop and eat the same snacks as unhealthy adults eat. They not only need to eat healthier they too need supplementation for growing bodies and minds.
We think that we can eat anything and it doesn’t affect our health. You are what you eat, what you absorb and don’t eliminate. Simply put! You cannot put poor quality nutrition in and expect high performance. We take better care of our automobiles than our bodies and our body has to last a lifetime. What car lasts as long as a person?
High performance also requires the best quality supplementation. Find someone who cares about you and talk with them about what you should take for more energy, healing and prevention. Don’t depend on some clerk who got hired last week for your nutritional needs. The first thing a person should look to is Core Nutrition. If you want fast food, look to a smoothie that has balanced nutrition such as Smart Meal to start your day. Look to an energy drink that doesn’t pack on the weight and may even contribute to supporting health like Solstic Energy or Revive.
Are you getting daily nutrients? Do you know that most diseases are because we don’t have enough vitamins and minerals to counter the condition? Low density and non nutritious foods fill us up but they do not meet basic nutritional needs. A good multivitamin and mineral supplement, along with an Omega oil supplement added to an antioxidant will help our body deal with inflammation—the leading cause of chronic diseases. What I just described is Super Trio—a sensible approach to getting the basic nutrients you need all in a cello pack that is easy to take. It is recommended to take two packs a day for energy and health.
Take the Core Health challenge and invest 3 months to helping regain or establish better health. Order your Jump Start pack today and begin feeding your body high performance food. http://www.naturessunshine.com/us/products/jumpstart-packs/cat-3-156.aspx Put it on auto-ship and each month your supply of nutrients will come automatically. If you don’t feel better after three months; discontinue your auto-ship but at least give it a try for the 3 months. It takes that long to build a blood cell! You need lots of healthy cells to make healthy tissue and lots of healthy tissue to make healthy organs and systems. How much would one day in a hospital cost? How about pain and suffering—work lost; love lost?
Good Health cannot be measured nor, put a price to—it is individual. I know what it is worth to me. I take supplements daily and know that it is why I don’t have to deal with arthritis, daily pain, headaches or other body aches, feeling old and a myriad of other conditions most of my peers have to deal with on a daily basis. I also take no medications. I don’t always eat right but I always take my supplements.
Have a healthy and joy filled week and remember to Be Brilliant!

Herbal eGram #539 Balancing the Elements
Good Morning!
People living in Missouri have too much water and those living in Arizona have too much fire. Water controls fire—according to the Chinese elemental chart. Most of the time if you want to douse a fire you pour water on it. Both of these elements when out of control cause tremendous damage. Missouri and Arizona are not the only states affected by these elements. Utah had record snowfall this winter and they wait with bated breath to see how the thaws will become flood concerns. Many states that border the Mississippi river were affected by rain, wind and dry conditions that contributed to the damage and severity of the floods and fires.
In health, the Chinese elemental chart states that Fire pertains to the Circulatory, Immune and Intestinal systems whereas Water pertains to the Urinary, Structural and Nervous systems. For better understanding of these elements, check out Tree of Light—ABC+D classes. The Chinese really understand balance. I loved learning about the 5 elements and how they interact to create balance. Steven Horne is a great teacher and the information will help you understand health in ways that put you in control—not circumstances.
According to a report in Associated Press, all the wildfires were “human caused”. Just as these element disasters create havoc so do we in our body. We drink the wrong drinks, eat the wrong food and then when our body becomes imbalanced it sends out pain signals. Instead of dealing with why there is pain—we take something to kill the message. When the message is not heard we harm our body further doing the same thing that created the message. When total disaster strikes we say, “Why me”?
What can you do to avoid, modulate, or address the cause of your concerns? Watch all five of the Week of Education Webinars and learn how you can be healthier. Don’t wait for an “eye opener” to occur as the stimulant that makes you take stock of your health. Listening to the nudges and signals our body sends out helps us rebalance and avoid the pitfalls of disease. If you’ve already fallen into the pit and are taking tons of medications to control your condition, you may want to learn how you can rebalance your body and eliminate the need for all those medications.
Most of the time, our conditions are a result of what we do or don’t do—just like the fires the result is human caused. Often times if we had known, we would have done differently. Find out what steps you can take to support better health and happiness. It is tough being happy when you aren’t healthy. Watch all five of the webinars. You can pick which one is important to you and then learn from all of them. When you take the time to be proactive in your health it always pays off. NSP will award you a certificate of completion for taking the time to view all five. http://www.naturessunshine.com/us/members/content1/webinar2/education-week.aspx
Nature’s Sunshine is also making it easier for you to be proactive in your health by giving you the ability to purchase product at discount and product credit for future purchases based on your purchases made this week. Make this your healthiest summer yet! Have a “health home” party and invite your friends over to view one of the five webinars. Wouldn’t it be great to have people talking about their health instead of their disease? How would it feel if next year someone told you—you helped them turn their life around?
May you never know the disease you avoided!

Herbal eGram #538 I’m So Busy!
Good Morning!
Do you find yourself responding to people’s questions on how you are doing with the statement of how busy you are and all the stressful things going on? Life is not simple. We have social, work, relationship and community obligations demanding our time and most of us find little time to devote to our own well being unless we’re sick. When we are sick it forces our body to rest and even that doesn’t stop us because we’ll take something to keep on going.
As Americans we run on stress. Our games create stress; our sports create stress; our jobs create stress and even our relationships create stress. The Adrenal glands are responsible for responding to stress by sending out the hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine. These messengers go to corresponding receptor sites and turn on an energy response from the mitochondria in each cell. These hormones are derived from the amino acid l-tyrosine.
When we have chronic stress the body cannot produce enough of the stimulating hormones and we end up with a deficit of tyrosine. This will be discussed in the class on the importance of Amino acids—the subject for July. Chronic stress depletes and fatigues the adrenal glands. Giving it nutrients to support repair and function is what Adrenal Support formula is all about.
The adrenal glands do not work alone—the hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenals work together in what is referred to as the HPA axis; a major part of the neuro-endocrine system that controls reactions to stress and regulates many body processes, including digestion, the immune system, mood and emotions, sexuality, and energy storage and expenditure. Helping the body adapt to change and other stresses with herbs that support this system would benefit us in diminishing the response and wear and tear on body functions when we deal with chronic stress.
There are workshops on managing stress, organizing our lives and simplifying our lifestyles to reduce stress however none of that addresses how to help your body recover and maintain a healthy stress response. When we take Adaptogenic herbs such as Astragalus or Licorice root we nourish the stress response. For a fuller list of these tonic herbs and a more extensive understanding of Adaptogenic herbs: http://www.chiro.org/nutrition/FULL/Adaptogenic_Herbs.shtml
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is what happens after a stressful occurrence is past. Labeling it doesn’t fix the problem. Seeking counseling helps but one must help the body recover from stress. The adrenals are in bad shape and need a bit more help than what Adaptogens can provide. Usually by this time the person is dependent on stimulants such as high caffeine products like Red Bull and so called Energy drinks which actually worsen the problem by further weakening the HPA axis.
Adrenal Support has raw adrenal gland from a pure source of New Zealand cows. This product has helped many of my clients bounce back from adrenal fatigue. When adrenal exhaustion has occurred it is generally useful to add Nervous Fatigue Formula. This product is loaded with Adaptogenic herbs that support the stress response of the body and acts to tonify the system. I’ve used these together when someone has more than one of these symptoms: Insomnia, panic attacks, Emotional Burnout, Confusion, Irritability, mood swings, exhaustion and even forgetfulness. Many symptoms of nervous system disorder are due to overtaxing the adrenal response.
Blood Pressure is a natural response of the body when dealing with stress. Taking medication may control blood pressure but it doesn’t fix the problem. One of the major contributing factors in high or low blood pressure is dehydration. We are fascinated by drinks in this country: energy drinks, joint drinks, fizzy drinks, alcohol drinks etc. and we do not drink enough plain pure water. My class on Blood Pressure will give you hints on how to regain balance from Stress and balance blood pressure. Be sure to join us on the 29th of June for the webinar on Blood Pressure—Drugs Don’t Cure it. http://www.bornforhealth.com/educationalwebinars/drmaryswebinars.html
Daily supplementation with B vitamins helps our body deal with stressful situations on an ongoing basis. B vitamins are water soluble and washed out therefore we need to be giving our body a continuous supply of these important nutrients. Whole food supplements that include Adaptogenic herbs can really make a difference in the health of our nervous, circulatory and immune systems. This is one of the reasons I love Nutri Calm. It is a daily supplement that helps us deal with stress.
The Nervous System Pack includes Adaptogenic herbs along with Nutri Calm to help our body deal with stress and assist in repair and maintenance of those systems that respond to stress. This is an easy to take cellophane packet of supplements that nourish the organs and glands while making sure the body has needed nutrients to handle stress. Take one packet in the am and one in the pm—let me know how you feel.

Herbal eGram #537 Athletes in Training
Good Morning!
Running and biking deplete the body of specific nutrients due to the extreme use of muscles during training and events. Repetitive use of the same muscle groups can contribute to injury. ”Baby boomers suffered more that 1 million sports injuries which cost over $18.7 billion Dollars in medical expenses in 1998. The highest numbers of sports-related injuries came from bicycling, basketball, baseball, and running.” .” http://www.scientificpsychic.com/fitness/sport_injuries.html The numbers are increasing each year. Most of the serious injuries in running and biking are due to collision with vehicles. However, what I want to bring to light is the fact that improper attention is paid to the role of antioxidants and tissue damage. People know about the need for hydration and electrolytes but do they know about oxidative stress? When you use muscles many things are happening at once in the body. Chemical messengers are telling the muscles to contract and expand to create motion. Cells are dying off and new ones are being created. Combustion of energy is occurring and energy production is going on in the mitochondria. Nutrients are needed for every one of these processes. Some of these nutrients are enzymes—listen to my webinar on Digestion coming up on Education week—June 20th through 27th. Some of the nutrients needed are antioxidants to protect against oxidative stress. NSPWebinars.com Why do some athletes die of a heart attack or stroke while doing something that is supposedly healthy for us? One of the nutrients our body needs is a ready supply of is Co-Q10. Coenzyme Q10 (also known as ubiquinone) is a naturally occurring nutrient that is found in every cell of our body with the highest concentrations found in the brain, heart, liver and kidneys. Its fundamental role is in cellular energy production. It also is needed to direct antioxidants in inhibiting free radical damage or oxidative stress. So, when an adequate supply of the nutrients that protect cells from damage isn’t available-- tissue breakdown occurs rapidly and even death can be the result. Short periods of exercise actually do help our bodies in a variety of ways. However, many scientific discoveries show that long term use of muscles, say those used in running for example, will actually tear the muscle down causing inflammation and tissue damage. We know this inflammation by a burning sensation or even pain. Many athletes will push past this indicator to where there is a numbing effect contributing to cell and tissue damage. One of the risk factors associated with CoQ10 deficiency is Chronic Intense Exercise. What nutrients do you need to have in the blood stream to counter this stress and how can you minimize the reactive process contributing to damaged tissue and disease? According to a study done by a group of doctors labeled, Effects of Acute and 14-day coenzyme Q10 supplementation on exercise performance in both trained and untrained individuals”. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18318910 -- Supplementation of Coenzyme Q10 showed a significant decrease in oxidative stress and better recovery levels. The delivery of CoQ10 in lipid form showed significant absorbability compared to supplements not available in this medium. Research has shown that using a lipid or oil based formula improved intestinal absorption and was enhanced when taken with food. I think this is due to the availability of digestive enzymes secreted during meals. Making sure the manufacturer uses no chemicals in the processing of CoQ10 is one of the reasons I depend on Nature’s Sunshine as it tests strictly for foreign materials and ingredients and makes sure that the product is of the highest quality with the best potency. The role of antioxidants like CoQ10 in the possible prevention of conditions such as heart disease, stroke and neurological conditions such as Alzheimers disease and Parkinson’s disease is being studied and showing that when these antioxidants are available for use by the pathways using enzymes and anti-inflammatory responses—inflammation can be minimized. I think this is very exciting evidence that loading the body with antioxidants in all forms will be significant in preventing disease such as strokes and heart attacks along with prevention of oxidative stress in arteries. I want to thank those scientists who are working to show how simple intake of nutrients can help us perform better and prevent disease. Remember when you take drugs such as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statin-like drugs) you reduce your levels of CoQ10 and it is recommended that you supplement with a good quality source of CoQ10. Other drugs such as: beta-blockers, hormone replacement therapy, psychotropic drugs, including phenothiazine and tricyclic antidepressants also deplete levels of CoQ10 and supplementation is suggested. We’ll be discussing the need for CoQ10 in this month’s Herbal Hour discussions (both live in Southfield on the 11th and again via webinar on the 29th) and other nutrients that can help the body manage better blood pressure levels.

Herbal eGram #536 It’s No Picnic
Good Morning!
Food Poisoning is no picnic. Anyone who has had a touch of food poisoning or worse, debilitated by it, knows how it can ruin a fun time and even impact your health for months to years. Recently the government mandated tougher controls on Food Safety: http://www.epi.ufl.edu/sites/www.epi.ufl.edu/files/RankingTheRisksREPORT.pdf .
Mandating a law is not going to protect you against Food Poisoning. You need to protect yourself by understanding how you can avoid it. Yes, it is definitely a good idea to purchase fresh and organic foods and eat them as soon after purchasing. The storage of food can compromise the food and one has no idea how it was stored before purchased. You can read all about food storage and washing it: http://www.foodsafety.gov/keep/basics/
The potential for food poisoning is exponentiated when the health of the host (you) is compromised to begin with. High sugar, low nutrient diets and compromised gut motility will set up the right atmosphere for food poisoning to take hold. We weaken our immune system when we eat and drink foods that have sugar or alcohol in it. These foods/drinks wipe out our supply of good bacteria that are part of the immune response.
Stress in the form of temperature excesses; strenuous activity and not drinking enough water to hydrate our body is another assault we make on our body during the summer. Too much sun that can damage the skin’s protective barrier and distract the immune system from the gut to the exterior (skin) is also a factor. Taking a pinch of natural sea salt like NSP’s Sea Salt with your water will help hydrate the cells of the body and maintain good electrolytes. You can also use the Solstic Revive during strenuous activity to help maintain good electrolyte levels. Sugar and alcohol are very dehydrating and for every cup of liquid consumed that has these ingredients—you need to drink 12ounces of water to flush it out.
When visiting a foreign country. you should begin each day with 2 glasses of purified water equaling 16ounces and 2 capsules of probiotics either Probiotic Eleven or Bifidophilus to help your immune system fight foreign bacteria, viruses and yeast. Each day you need to help the immune system deal with free radicals and this can be achieved by a high antioxidant drink like Thai Go or a couple of capsules of Super ORAC. This protocol has kept me from getting sick in many a foreign country even when those around me have fallen ill from “food poisoning”.
I don’t ever go on a trip without probiotics and activated charcoal because I don’t want any foreign bacteria taking hold in my gut. I have found that the best defense is a good offense and taking probiotics and activated charcoal has worked for me for many years. I take 2 capsules of probiotics upon rising with 16ounces of water and at each meal I take two capsules of activated charcoal. At night I again take two more capsules of probiotics to make sure that anything harmful I’ve ingested doesn’t adhere to the linings of my intestines.
Another one of my tricks is: take two Food Enzymes with each meal. Food Enzymes help maintain the proper pH for good digestion. If your body is struggling to break down food, it is also having difficulty in moving toxins out. When food is improperly digested it can cause symptoms of nausea, stomach cramping and diarrhea (sounds like food poisoning on a small scale). The health of the lining of our digestive tract depends on several things: water intake, healthy food and even happy thoughts.
I have been asked to do a nationally broadcasted webinar for Nature’s Sunshine on the subject of digestion. I will be discussing many of the points I made above and more. These webinars will air during the week of June 20-27th. You can find out how to register and attend these free informative sessions: www.NSPWebinars.com I look forward to sharing with you some of the research I’ve been studying regarding healthy digestion.
Since most of the time we are playing and eating at a picnic and there isn’t always a facility for washing hands, I would think it a great idea to bring along Silver gel and Silver Shield surface wipes to make sure germs don’t pass from our hands to our mouth. This is especially true for children. Silver gel protects hands for up to 4 hours from pathogens. When water isn’t available—use the Silver surface wipes. I’ve used these on my hands and then let them air dry before handling food.
Make sure your picnics are a fun time this year and not one you remember with regret. Just as you remember the beach towels, fun equipment, and food –also remember these ideas to help protect you and your loved ones create great memories. Children’s antioxidants and probiotics are easy to take and taste yummy, so don’t forget to protect those little ones too.

Herbal eGram #535 Easily Sunburned
Good Morning!
Do you sunburn easily? It seems as if red haired people with light skin burn much easier than olive skinned, or dark skinned people. Our body protects against the suns harmful rays by producing melanin and the darker the skin, the more melanin you have. There is a problem when melanin congests causing age spots. So, it isn’t only about having enough melanin. It is also about other antioxidants and components that make up healthy skin.
Melanin is a phytoprotectant that protects us against not only harmful rays but damage that may result in skin cancer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanin Another factor in healthy skin is collagen. This is what makes skin elastic. Wrinkled skin is a sign of aging and aging early is a result of not enough antioxidants. Melanin is an antioxidant and you can increase your ability to protect against the harmful rays of the sun while helping your skin absorb vitamin D by making sure you take in plenty of antioxidants and eating foods that help build collagen and elasticity.
Bill Sardi (author of the book: How To Live 100 Years Without Growing Old.) states about Hyaluronic Acid: HA is the naturally produced water-holding molecule in the connective tissue of the body. Just one gram of HA holds about six liters of water. Think of how the skin of very young babies looks—it won’t even create a scar if cut or scratched. That’s what HA acid does. It is nature’s healing agent and scaffolding or "space filler" for the skin, hair, eyes and joints. It also serves as a barrier against disease.
A perfect solution: Everflex with Hyaluronic Acid. Stiff achy joints from running, playing or doing yard work may be a result of not enough antioxidants and not enough collagen. Synovial fluid depends on high amounts of Hyaluronic acid to lubricate our joints. Most people will take NSAIDs (which can cause all manner of problems in the body with multiple side effects) when they have pain. This only addresses the pain control mechanism and does nothing for repair. If a person were to take a supplement like Everflex with HA before doing strenuous activity, they would repair quicker and have less damage.
I’ve mentioned before that your body needs water and here is yet another reason—to keep skin plump and healthy. Collagen Plus helps build healthy skin matrix allowing for more elasticity and with the added benefit of Aloe this would be a great addition to a summer smoothie when you know you are going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time. I’m not totally against using sunscreen protection—I just think that we do need to absorb some of the sun’s rays in order to produce healthy amounts of vitamin D and other benefits. The plants don’t use sunblock!
Plants are full of phytonutrients—our problem is we aren’t. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables to make sure we have high amounts of antioxidants will help protect us from harmful free radicals. It is this electron stealing mechanism that causes skin damage. Human nature is that we love to blame others instead of looking at what we have control over and do something about that. Alcohol, tobacco use and poor nutrient availability are a huge contributing factor to free radical damage. I love Food Network’s, Alton’s explanation of free radicals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_Xo5AaTH8U
What do you do, drink, and eat when you are having fun in the sun? Does your beverage choice include alcohol? How about your food choices—do they include antioxidants? Here is a drink that may help you feel refreshed, not burn quite as easily and keep your energy levels high: 1 ounce of Thai Go—two tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice—one scoop of Collatrim Plus and 15-20 ounces of purified water.
Thai Go is full of antioxidants and has been rated as highest tested by New Brunswick laboratories—a prestigious award not given to any other mangosteen/acai fruit drink. Lemon juice has many benefits in fighting skin damage and Collatrim Plus helps with the production of elastin and collagen both necessary in the production of melanin.
We need nutrients that help protect our skin and it isn’t about using sunblock. If we block the sun’s benefits we can’t absorb vitamin D and many of the other benefits the sun brings us. What we need to do is protect from the inside out. One very inexpensive way to help protect the skin, hair and nails is to provide the body with herbs that are packed with protein, silica and other trace minerals that helps our body make healthier cells.
I love HSN-W for this very reason! It is nutrient-rich and loaded with vitamins, minerals that include silica and calcium as well as herbs that promote better circulation to the extremities. This product also includes the herb sage. Recent studies have shown that sage provides antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties with relevance to treating skin infections, skin problems including herpes simplex virus sores and blisters. Sage provides a natural source of copper, magnesium, manganese, silicon, zinc and vitamin C, all of which contribute to healthy hair, skin and nails.
So, whether you are a sun worshipper or just occasionally have extended exposure to the sun, I hope you find some of the above suggestions helpful in alleviating hours and even days of discomfort due to sun exposure. If you choose to use a sunscreen, make sure that it is one that is not going to harm you. I’m not in favor of spray on sunscreens especially for children as they don’t do well in holding their breath and breathing in these oily substances can be harmful for the respiratory system. If you want to choose a commercial sunscreen check out: http://safemama.com/2010/04/09/safemamas-2010-safer-sunscreen-cheat-sheet/

Herbal eGram #534 The Most Important Ingredient
Good Morning!
You can’t live more than a few moments without oxygen—but next to that, the most important ingredient for health is water. Without oxygen and water our brains would die. In a book I read many years ago, Your Body’s Many Cries for Water, Dr. Bhatmanghelidj explains how he was able to cure stomach ulcers in a person while being held prisoner in India because of political differences. He was saved from execution and went on to devote his life in telling people about the importance of water.
The commercial "sick-care" system and the drug industry do not want you to know that in most health problems you are only thirsty and not sick! The body requires water to function properly. Do you have allergies and take an antihistamine to stop the itchy and watery symptoms? What your body is trying to do is flush out toxins. An antihistamine dries up the mucus and makes the situation worse by not allowing the body to remove toxins. What you really need, according to Dr. Batmanghelidj is to drink more water! In fact, pain is a sign of dehydration and what do we do in this country—we take drugs to shut off the signal! This is what we are taught by those we look to for medical answers.
“For most of the prisoners, who ranged in age from 14 to 80, pressures of the exceptionally harsh life caused much stress and ill health. Destiny must have chosen me to be there to help some of these desperate people. I began to identify the health problems that "blossomed" due to the stress of prison. By far the largest number involved ulcer pains. I treated those who came to me with what proved to be the best "natural elixir" -- water. I found water could treat and cure more diseases than any medication I knew about.”
According to Dr. B., babies are about 90% water and as we age we become more and more dehydrated. Are you thinking that there is a similarity between what happens to a plump juicy grape and a raisin is the similar process to humans and aging? Did Ponce de Leon have it right -- being young has to do with water? When we drink coffee or other caffeinated drinks we actually dehydrate ourselves and cause the bladder to become irritated from the stimulant drink we are consuming. For every cup of coffee or soda pop, or even energy drink we consume, we need to drink an equal or greater amount of water to flush out the irritants. So, you might think that all you do now is pee—what would happen if you drank even more?
The real problem is your body’s cells are not being hydrated. When someone retains fluids and shows edema, it is actually a problem at the cell level. Sodium and potassium are not being exchanged as they should. Try adding a pinch or two of NSP natural sea salt to either 8 ounces of water or just sprinkle it on your tongue before drinking the water. This will help the water get into the cells and assist in this very important metabolic process. You do not have a diuretic deficiency—you have a problem with exchange. This is a contributing factor in high blood pressure which is next month’s theme.
So, what is the right dosage? According to Dr. B. if you have pain you need to take ¾ your body weight in ounces of water daily. If you aren’t in pain, you can drink half your body weight in ounces of water every day. You should drink water at room temperature to better assist the body in health and digestion. Any other drink is not considered water and cannot be counted as part of the dosage. If you are concerned about getting up in the middle of the night to urinate, then stop drinking an hour before bed. You might consider that sugar and alcohol contribute to bladder irritation and check out what you are eating or drinking other than water before bedtime.
Good water without chemicals is best for your health. I feel that NSP’s reverse osmosis water treatment system is one of the best investments I ever made. Before I got it and started to purify my water I was a very poor water drinker. I also was troubled with many bladder infections. I have had the same unit for over 30 years! You should consider investing in your health and purchase a Nature’s Spring. The cost is less than an Emergency trip to a hospital and according to Dr. Bhatmanghelidj, your body is crying for water to help drive out toxins and nourish your cells.
Enjoy this wonderful Spring and order your Nature’s Spring today!

Herbal eGram #533 Devil’s Claw
Good Morning!
If you were like me and spent some of this fantastic weekend cleaning up and planting in your yard—you may be very interested in how Devils Claw has been used to help with back and knee pain as well as being an effective anti-inflammatory.
The seed of this plant has a little hook on it (why it has its name) and if you’ve ever been near burdock seeds you know what I mean. Burr seeds can attach themselves and be the very devil to remove from pet hair and human clothing. “Harpag”, the name the Africans call this burr, can travel all over the African Kalahari Desert and Savanah regions planting itself in various locations. The natives use the tuberous root of this plant for stiff and painful joints, difficult child births, fever, Malaria, and even indigestion.
Due to the herb’s ability to increase stomach acids in its effort to support better digestion, people with stomach or duodenal ulcers should avoid using this product. Most people have poor digestion which leads to an inability to break down food into usable nutrients the body needs for repair.
German researchers have determined that Devils Claw may be useful in a wide range of health concerns which include bladder, kidney and liver diseases, as well as allergies, arteriosclerosis, gastrointestinal disorders (of slow digestion), gout, headaches, heartburn, low back pain, menstrual pain, neuralgia, and even nicotine poisoning. People who have spondylosis, a condition of the spine characterized by fixation and stiffness of vertebral joints have found relief in taking Devils Claw or combinations including this herbal remedy.
French researchers found in recent clinical studies that the specific constituents in Devils Claw have been noted to have many properties that are anti-inflammatory, and pain relieving. They also concluded that many of these constituents have antioxidant effects that actually assist in repair of tissue.
In Europe it is widely used and advertised as a medicine that will not only effectively treat arthritis and gout but also assist the body in eliminating the cause of the condition. In the US it is not as well know because the only research that is recognized here is promoted by the drug industry. Some research is showing that it can be an effective natural calcium channel blocker.
From the British Journal of Phytotherapy: This anti-oxidant action may also explain some of the other reported actions of Harpagophytum [Devils Claw], including its inhibitory effect on reperfusion-induced ventricular arrhythmias in animals and interference with mechanisms that regulate the influx of calcium into cells. Reperfusion injury following myocardial infarction is associated with an accumulation of oxidative free radicals. Anti-oxidants have shown to be effective in preventing or reducing such injury. Similarly, increased cellular influx, following lipid peroxidation of the cell membrane, may be involved in mechanisms underlying cell damage.
Research and experience has shown that Devil's Claw is non-toxic, generally well-tolerated and safe with virtually no side effects if taken in appropriate, therapeutic dosages. Devils Claw can be purchased as a single herb or in combination as Everflex. For complete description of its uses and any cautions, be sure to check out: http://hartonweb.com/nsp-herbs/bornforhealth.com/?sn=255-9
Everflex has the additional benefits of Chondroitin Sulfate, MSM, Hyaluronic Acid, and Glucosamine to support joint health and pain reduction. This combination of ingredients has been especially helpful for those who have experienced sport injuries and overuse of muscles and joints. Some find it beneficial to take this product prior to exercising, gardening, running or other strenuous activities to have the constituents available for immediate action.
In a 2003 study 41.8% patients taking devils claw extract had a 50% or greater reduction in pain. While only 33.3% of those taking rofecoxib (Vioxx) reported 50% or greater reduction in pain. http://bouldernaturallabs.com/healthlibrary/devils-claw-herb.html Since there are multiple side effects when taking drugs, doesn’t it make sense to use something natural? Especially when that natural supplement is recommended in Europe as an effective treatment for pain and inflammation! The fact that our pharmaceutical industry is so powerful in this country is the very reason most of us don’t know how to effectively treat with natural remedies. The drug companies will find a way to make you afraid to try herbal supplements and yet their products are killing people every day.
Help me promote health freedom and check out the MNHC website. We need your support in keeping health freedom alive in the United States. One thinks this is where Freedom is our mantra—but is it really? http://michigannaturalhealthcoalition.org/ Make sure you only buy from a company like NSP that makes sure the proper part of the plant is used and that it is pure, grown without chemicals and has no harmful additives.
The pharmaceutical industry tried to make a drug out of Devils Claw by taking one of the main constituents, Harpago and genetically modified it for the study. It was a complete bust as it did not work nearly as effectively as using the whole herb from the tuber. When will the drug company understand that it isn’t about the active ingredient but the reason herbs work so well is its synergistic effect on the body? Trying to improve upon Mother Nature just doesn’t work. As the scientists start to discover more and more about micro nutrients; I feel they will finally recognize nature is simply too complex to duplicate.

Herbal eGram #532 Greening up
Good Morning!
Spring is sprung and the grass is greening up. Many people are cleaning up their yards and fertilizing their lawns—but what’s in that fertilizer? Recycled waste products—no way! Yes, way!
The recycling of hazardous industrial wastes into fertilizers introduces several dozen toxic metals and chemicals into the nation's farm, lawn and garden soils, including such well-known toxic substances as lead and mercury. Many crops and plants extract these toxic metals from the soil, increasing the chance of impacts on human health as crops and plants enter the food supply chain. This report documents the highly toxic substances found by testing fertilizers, as well as the strict regulations needed to protect humans and the environment from these toxic hazards. http://www.pirg.org/toxics/reports/wastelands/WasteLands.pdf
Did you know that the recycling of hazardous wastes into fertilizer products does not always include the process of treatment or cleaning of hazardous waste, but rather dilution of that waste? If you are a “label reader” you may be thinking that you never read anything about “toxic waste” on the label of your favorite lawn fertilizer and you’d be right. They don’t have to list it!
What are your children or pets rolling around in when they play on your lawn? Not only fertilizer but also the weed killer part of your favorite spring lawn treatment. Herbicides kill! Contact dermatitis is a mild result of being in close contact with an herbicide. The amount that stays on the grass is determined by how much the grass absorbs. Some of the residue may not be absorbed into the plant. Walking barefoot on grass that has been treated (even a week later) can mean that the feet will absorb any residue.
What you might be adding to your lawn are POPs (persistent organic pollutants) that cannot be diluted. These toxic chemicals include cadmium, lead and mercury. Fertilizer and herbicide labeling laws do not require listing toxic metals that are not essential to plant and crop growth. Many cancers are caused by heavy metal poisoning.
The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 10,000-20,000 physician-diagnosed pesticide poisonings occur each year among U.S. agricultural workers. The agency also believes that these are serious underestimates. Long-term problems include neurological problems like tremors, depression and fatigue, respiratory problems, cancers, degeneration of the retina, longer-than-average menstrual cycles, and reproductive issues. (Journal of Pesticide Reform, Summer 2006)
Some natural answers to killing weeds include rubbing alcohol and vinegar. One comment was to use bleach—but that’s just as toxic as other weed killers in my estimation. My favorite is to add one ounce of Nature’s Fresh Enzyme spray to one gallon of white vinegar. Put this in a sprayer and use on weeds. Of course, one of my instructors once said, “If a weed persists—eat it. It may be there because you need it”. Try dandelion flowers – they’re delicious. Some weeds are actually very good herbs. Dandelion leaves are high in Calcium.
One of my favorite fertilizer and plant solutions come from a company called “Garden’s Alive”. http://www.gardensalive.com/product.asp?pn=2647 The big thing with healthy lawns is a good pH. If your lawn has healthy soil to live in, it will be healthy and lush. Just like our body—lawns need to have a healthy environment to send down its roots and absorb nutrients that should be in the soil. We shouldn’t have to add nutrients to the grass. Nutrients for healthy plant growth should come from a nutrient rich soil. When we artificially supply nutrients to a plant we usually rob the soil of a balanced base.
Make better choices about your environment—don’t just look for green, check out what is healthy. Green lawns are temporary. What matters more is your health, and your family’s health. Invest in healthy and non-toxic food and quit giving your money to those who don’t care about your health.
Have a healthy and joy filled week and remember to Be Brilliant!

Herbal eGram #531 Pea to Pee
Good Morning!
One of the major concerns with high blood pressure medication is kidney damage. This damage may be a side effect of BP medications. Diuretics are the most common cause of potassium deficiency and one of the functions of the kidneys is to keep our acid/alkaline balanced. The kidneys use potassium to accomplish this.
When your body is too acid, the kidneys will take calcium from the bones to equalize and balance blood pH. Alcohol, phosphates (in soft drinks and meats), sugar, and protein increase calcium excretion. So, eating a diet of fast food, soda pop and/or alcohol can be a huge contributing factor to not only poor teeth but all bone development. Green leafy vegetables are a good source of digestible calcium, along with broccoli.
The dairy association would have you believe that milk is the perfect food; however it is one of the most allergic foods we consume. The way that milk is processed and the way that cows are fed make this a very undesirable food. Add to this the fact that D2 is added to milk—a synthetic and toxic form of vitamin D, you have a food that has the potential for congestion and disruption of normal body functions. For most people, milk is not easily digested.
Finding a natural product that can support kidney function along with lowering blood pressure is exciting. Yellow pea protein is looking to be an exciting alternative to blood pressure medications according to a Canadian study: "What we seem to have here is sort of a natural approach to treating this disease, as opposed to the normal pharmacological approach," said the study's lead author, Rotimi E. Aluko, an associate professor in the department of human nutritional sciences at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. "We're talking about an edible product, not a drug, which can help to reduce blood pressure and, at the same time, reduce the severely negative impact of kidney disease." http://www.drugs.com/news/protein-yellow-peas-may-lower-blood-pressure-16786.html
Most people get all of the potassium they need from a healthy diet rich in vegetables and fruits. Older people have a greater risk of hyperkalemia (too much potassium in the blood) because our kidneys are less efficient at eliminating potassium as we age. Older people should be careful when taking medication that may affect potassium levels, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and ACE inhibitors. Most adults should take enzymes when they eat so that minerals from our food can be utilized properly—poor digestion comes with aging. I recommend that everyone above the age of 40 take some form of enzymes with their meals. Aging is a normal process but aging gracefully takes effort.
Love and Peas is a great base for a smoothie, or delicious on its own. The excitement we see here is a quick breakfast that actually is highly nutritious. It provides 20 grams of protein per serving. It is gluten and dairy free and tastes delicious. You can add frozen fruit for more antioxidant benefit and to change flavor. It also has plant based enzymes for easier digestion and absorption. A great way to start the day! In addition it contains a great antioxidant blend and offers a balanced amino acid profile. It contains 5 grams of fiber to help with satiation and bulk. It has 180 calories total and is easily mixed with cold water in a shaker.
Some of the other ingredients are: Blueberry Powder, Cranberry Powder, Broccoli Powder, Carrot Powder, Grape Skin Extract, Grape Seed Extract, Pomegranate Powder and it is sweetened with Stevia making it great for balancing blood sugar and helpful for diabetics. Those who are watching their caloric intake may want to start their day with our new Smart Start meal replacements that only have 130 calories for vanilla or Chai; or 140 calories for chocolate flavor.
Next month’s theme is about the urinary system and how to maintain good health by supporting this very important eliminative system. Be sure to sign up for a class either live or via webinar to learn how you can protect your kidneys, bladder and the rest of your “plumbing”. Backups in this system can contribute to a variety of unhealthy conditions that can easily be avoided if you know what to do. One of the things you can do right now is to avoid soft drinks, alcohol, sugar and medications that contribute to stress on the urinary system. Look for natural alternatives first to accomplish balance and health. If you don’t know what to choose, ask a qualified health coach or naturopathic doctor for advice and for Heaven’s sake take pea protein to pee well.

Herbal eGram #530 To Dye For
Good Morning!
Sarah, my granddaughter, sat down with her water and floating in it was a pink ice cube. Sarah loves the color pink! I looked at it with horror and asked what she had put in her water; which is purified via a Reverse Osmosis unit because her parents care about health. She proudly stated that she put food dye in the ice cube tray. After a bit of a discussion about food dyes she now strings blueberries together on toothpicks, sections off oranges and freezes them for her snack along with her water.
Brilliant colors add to the appeal of food. The unfortunate thing is that many of the foods we eat and the drinks we consume are not naturally dyed. They contain chemicals that have been proven harmful. Food that some think are healthful like Fruit Loops and Lucky Charms—these are foods being fed to children under 3. If you want to know the risk factors these colors represent then check this out: http://cspinet.org/new/pdf/food-dyes-rainbow-of-risks.pdf
It isn’t about what we do once a year that counts—it’s what we do on a daily or near daily basis that will create healthy or unhealthy cells/tissues and organs. Every moment we are building cells and cells are dying. When we replace those dying cells with cells that are healthier than their predecessors, then our body responds in better health. What we eat, assimilate and don’t eliminate contributes to either health or illness.
I love the bright colors of pink grapefruit, oranges, apples—ranging from yellow, red and green; lemons and limes and blueberries too. These colors contribute to our health because they provide us with the antioxidants known as beta carotenes. There are wonderful antioxidant choices out there.
My favorite antioxidant drink is Thai Go. I drink this every morning and it starts my day with energy while it balances my blood sugar. All night long your brain has gone without nutrients—feeding it Thai Go first thing in the morning is like giving food to a starving person. If on the other hand you expose your brain to sugar and dyes, you can set up a cascade of misfiring hormones that can contribute to hyper behavior or depressive thinking.
My class this Wednesday is all about Mood Disorders and how doctors have a “pill for all your ills” but nothing is addressing the real issues. Make sure you sign up for the class or watch the recorded session and learn how you can solve your mood disorder with getting the body back into balance. The first step is to get rid of sugar (as much as you can) and the additives—especially dyes; Dr. Mercola has a whole list of things to do: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/07/01/wean-yourself-off-processed-foods-in-7-steps.aspx
Some people will take themselves off of harmful drinks and food cold turkey and others have to do it a step at a time. Whatever path you choose to do the first step is being aware of what you put in your body and that it may be the very thing that is causing you to be less healthy and less energetic than you want from yourself.
While you concentrate on getting rid of the bad, you can start putting in the good with some basic nutrition. Be sure to check out doing the Smart Start plus for great nutrition and weight management. Or, if you want to eliminate some stored toxins, check out the Smart Start Complete. These are on special until the 15th of April so the time is now, if you want to save.
Make a commitment to have the most Brilliant Body in your group. Help your children to become Brilliant and have a Brilliant income with NSP. The more you focus on health the less you will focus on disease and what you focus on you get.
Have a healthy and joy filled week and remember to Be Brilliant!

Herbal eGram #529 Calculate Your Empire
Good Morning!
What is your legacy? If you were a king, or very rich, what you left behind would be considered an empire. Since most of us are not kings or queens we leave a legacy. A Legacy can be a gift of property but it can also be the gift of who we were and the lives we impact. Mother Theresa did not leave a gift of property but the gift of her goodness to mankind. That is what she will be remembered by.
Each week I receive a newsletter from Nightingale Conant and I thought this was particularly interesting: M-PYR™ is an acronym for Minimum Potential Years Remaining. It is a calculation that takes into account what you know about your personal family history of longevity and compares this to your current age to determine the minimum number of years that you have left. You can follow the link to determine yours.
Since I am soon to be 68 and my father’s family lived to be in their late 80s and even into 100s, I could possibly be around for another 30-35 years. How will I live them? My goal is to have enough energy to have fun, have full awareness of what is going on and to be as mobile as I am right now. I want to be an example and share my example of health and vitality.
There are plenty of health gurus out there. There are plenty of fitness ones too. There are also a ton of diets. When choosing what is going to fit for you, consider basic health principles. If we abuse our body in an effort to lose weight and ignore healthy eating, rest, fresh air, and water intake—we are not achieving health. If you don’t have enough amino acids to build muscle tissue then your exercise routine is only tearing muscle down. http://www.muscleandstrength.com/articles/the-importance-of-amino-acids.html
The condition of our digestive system can also have an effect on amino acid digestion, genetics, age, health, specific diseases and illnesses all have an effect on our digestion. This is the main reason I feel everyone over the age of 40 needs to take a digestive supplement. My choice is Food Enzymes. When you are trying to get the most out of that morning smoothie, make sure you take an enzyme with it.
Whatever years you have left—you want to make the most of them. Don’t wait. Do that diet program now! Each meal you can choose to eat healthy Eating right for your blood type is a good rule of thumb. If you have allergies consider enzymes and repairing the gut. I talk about these at our class on May 7th.
So many people have allergies. Why? One reason can be that as babies we were given foods we couldn’t digest, or our digestive system wasn’t developed enough to handle it. This set up a pattern of rejection. When that was ignored a different pattern set in. One pattern could have been vomiting. We consider it part of a baby’s MO if they throw up. The next pattern could be diarrhea. When it continues on during childhood and ignored it might show up as a skin condition like eczema. Reversing these patterns by first eliminating the allergen and then repairing the gut makes sense.
Start now with a healthy nutritional plan you’ve been putting off. Fresh fruits and vegetables should be the base along with some healthy proteins or amino acid supplements. Our body needs good food to build healthy tissues. We also need to drink half our body weight in ounces of water. This is helpful for the body’s elimination of toxins. Get up and start moving to improve your health. Muscles need to be used in order to maintain strength.
What will you do with the rest of your life? It begins today. Spring is renewal of the earth. What are you willing to do to find better health? This past weekend I went to a class in Ohio and heard the most amazing story from a woman named Alexa. Her story was a wakeup call for everyone in the room. Alexa is 40 years old and had been diagnosed with MS. She had seizures 3-4 times a week; was severely exhausted most of the time; unable to walk; IBS and chemical sensitive.
A friend said, “I’m no doctor but I do know that you need to get rid of the bad stuff in your body and start putting in the good”. Alexa was a vegetarian and she understood about a healthy diet but apparently it wasn’t enough for repair. Her friend told her about Clean Start and Super Trio. After 5 days of doing these products her MS symptoms went away. She started having more energy almost immediately. This was in January and when I met her on Saturday, April 2nd she had finished out the entire day of class and was looking forward to going square dancing that evening. Her legacy is the hope she gives to all people who have been diagnosed with a severe condition and given the right tools, can be healthy again.
We have this moment in time to choose health or sickness. Each time we drink, eat or think, we make a decision either for our health, or against it. What are you doing to make a healthier you? Are you stuck and don’t know where to go? Take a class—check out the possibilities listed on my calendar or past webinars listed. The webinars are free and are on a variety of health concerns.
Natural health methods work with the body to assist in repair and building. You simply cannot do that with fast foods, removing body parts (stapling stomachs--liposuction) and ignoring the basics of good nutrition. Find a way that is going to work for you to have the energy and good health you need to enjoy your M-PYR™.
Have a healthy and joy filled week and remember to Share.
