Herbal eGram #602 Jump On The Bus
Good Morning!
This email is not about the movie or the Million Man march. This email is about learning to trust. Children learn quickly who they can trust and who they can’t—most adults are just plain skeptical of everyone. When you were a child you learned what school bus you needed to be on to get to school and back home. If you got on the wrong bus—you would not only not get home, but most of what you saw out the window would be unfamiliar and maybe scary.
Did you ever stop and wonder, “What am I doing here?” I find New Years a good time to reflect on how your year went. What went right and what went wrong. How do you want this coming year to go? When you reflect one must get in touch with their feelings and inner strength. This is often where people get on the wrong bus. They’ve not been following their own feelings or listening to their heart.
When you jump on the bus of your career often times you think you know where you are going and it ends up somewhere totally foreign. You might look around and ask, “How did I get here”? Then comes the hard part—how do I get back to where I wanted to be? You have to get off of the bus to change your circumstances. Sometimes that is tough because you’ve made an investment in being there and it is sheltering you from the weather outside the bus. You might have to ask for directions. But, ultimately know that you need to make your decision from a feeling of “rightness”.
Relationships are often the same. You start out thinking this person is the right one for me and then somewhere along the way you realize the magic is gone and you don’t know how to get it back. You might have to select a different bus. This is even more difficult when there are others on the bus with you who depend on you and you love. Children get hurt when parents separate or choose to live together but can’t seem to get past the disagreements to the love they once shared.
It is a shared responsibility when a relationship doesn’t work and blame is unproductive. We are all accountable. Our speech, actions and our choices have an end result called consequence. When we use love and respect as our vehicle, the consequence is generally good. When we are letting others choose for us because we don’t want to take responsibility for our choices, then we also must accept the consequences and not blame others for the decisions we didn’t want to make.
If you are a parent or a boss—catch people in the act of doing what is right and let them know they are doing well. Most people work on the premise that you only point out what is wrong. This generates anxiety and more bad results. If you encourage what you see as good—more good will come from it. If it is a child, or an employee they will see themselves as good also. This improved self-esteem can only create productivity.
If it is a behavior or action that is not to your liking—look inside yourself for a better description of what you want as an outcome. Too many times we think the person knows what we’re thinking just because it is clear to us. If you are a boss, or a parent, realize that it is your responsibility to be clear about your desired results and that accountability is two sided. If the person doesn’t know how to achieve the goal you set out—you need to be accessible for questions and clarity and you need to express to them that you are there for them and want to see them achieve success.
Once the person knows what is expected and has a good idea on how to achieve the goal, the process is their responsibility. Demanding it be done only your way does not allow the person a chance to be creative or use their own ability and talents. It also is making you totally responsible for the end result. Once you have handed off the project, you should expect completion without interfering. Much like a game of catch; if you have the ball all the time, it isn’t a game of catch. The other person might as well not be there at all.
In relationships it is good to know who is responsible for what and when. Being able to count on someone else builds trust. When you count on someone to follow through on something they’ve said they would do, and that doesn’t come about in a timely manner will create distrust. The word “try” is used too often when the word “no” should be used. You need to figure out whether the action is plausible or not. Wanting to please someone and not getting it done is harmful to trust in relationships. Constantly being disappointed in someone erodes love.
If your bus is driving you to a destination that is not what you had in mind, stop and evaluate what you need to do to change it. Maybe you need a different bus to get you to a different destination. But, once you have selected your new destination you have to trust the bus driver to get you there safely. If you are focused on your destination and you have chosen the right vehicle to get you there—the bus driver (God – or whatever Supreme Being you believe in) will get you there.
As we let go of 2012 and embrace 2013 you might ask yourself—are you on the right bus? Take a little time and evaluate if what you are doing is making you happy, peaceful and you looking forward to each day.
Have a wonderful New Year and much happiness, health and success in 2013!
Yours, For The Health of It,

Herbal eGram #601 Relax!
Good Morning!
Relax is probably not a word we pay much attention to, especially during the holiday season. The media hypes us up on all the news “we should know” even though it adds to our stress levels. We get caught up in the “ain’t it awful” game; get depressed about the downturn where it comes to finance and we still have shopping to do! I suggest you light that Christmas candle that you’ve been saving because it’s so pretty – and give yourself a little Holiday Cheer.
There are many techniques that teach you relaxation such as Yoga, meditation and prayer. These are all very important. If however, when you go to sleep at night and your muscles can’t relax due to a magnesium deficiency—no technique will be as successful as combining it with a nutritional supplement that makes up for your deficiency.
For years I’ve told clients that we are magnesium deficient in this country. Twenty-five years, or so, ago I was studying about minerals and how our soil has been depleted of certain minerals since most chemical fertilizers do not contain them. The most significant of these minerals is actually a macro mineral (the others are trace, or micro, minerals)—Magnesium. This mineral is essential for more than one thousand processes and functions our body performs on a daily basis.
To add insult to injury, most of the medications people take deplete the body even more of this important mineral. Even though our food should contain this mineral, it is in short supply due to the way our food is grown. Conventional farming techniques use fertilizers that corrupt the delicate balance of the soil robbing it of nutrients like Magnesium. You couple that with years of eating conventionally grown food and we have whole generations that are mineral deficient.
All doctors talk about is your need for calcium---without magnesium, calcium cannot be utilized by the body I have recommended a supplement that has the perfect 1:1 ratio of calcium to magnesium called Skeletal Strength. I have taken this supplement for over 20 years. I take two at my evening meal so that whatever calcium has been lost during the day can be replenished while I sleep. I also feel that this combination helps my body relax and fall asleep quicker.
I concur with Dr. Mercola the need for more magnesium. There are many kinds of magnesium and they all have different uses and assist with different functions. I urge you to read his article on Magnesium: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/12/17/magnesium-benefits.aspx?e_cid=20121217_DNL_art_1 He discusses one of the newest sources of Magnesium that is the easiest to absorb and utilize: l-threonate magnesium. This magnesium is found in our product Mind Max because it assists with carrying important nutrition to the brain for better brain relaxation and function. It also helps ATP and energy production in the mitochondria.
Here is his quote:
“Magnesium threonate is a newer, emerging type of magnesium supplement that appears promising, primarily due to its superior ability to penetrate the mitochondrial membrane, and may be the best magnesium supplement on the market.”
Some magnesium will act as a stool softener. Magnesium oxide is often taken to help relax the bowel when a person is constipated. We have this as a single—but understand Magnesium cannot work alone so you will always see it combined with either an amino acid (like the l-threonate) or another mineral for better absorption. In the case of Gentle Move, magnesium hydroxide is joined with herbs that have been known to relax the bowel and to repair inflamed tissue.
Without the herbs, magnesium hydroxide (same as used in Milk of Magnesia) can be very irritating to the colon causing bouts of constipation and then diarrhea. If the Gentle Move is taken at night it can facilitate an easy movement in the morning. Some people start by taking 5-6 at night and then as the bowel gets trained and you increase your water during the day, you can reduce the amount letting the natural peristalsis occur.
Years ago Nature’s Sunshine invited a Cardiac specialist to come and speak. Dr. Gerald M. Lemole was the physician to perform the first successful bypass in the tri-state area of Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. http://www.christianacare.org/bodymod.cfm?id=169&action=detail&ref=1349 Dr. Lemole told us that fifty percent of the people that come to his Cardiac clinic wouldn’t need to be there if they only took more magnesium. It is the natural “calcium channel blocker” and helps to regulate heart rhythm.
If you have leg cramps and your heart skips a beat—these may be indications of magnesium deficiency. If you have restless legs or constipation—you might want to try some Magnesium. Most good food source vitamin/mineral supplements have some magnesium in them. Our Super Supplemental may be enough to help relieve you of your deficiency symptoms—it is suggested to take between 2-4 daily. Make sure you are drinking adequate amounts of water to hydrate your supplements.
You might have seen the ingredient, magnesium stearate, on a supplement label. Dr. Sahelian puts it very well in his article on this: “Magnesium stearate is a white substance that has two equivalents of stearate and one magnesium cation. It is safe for human consumption. It is often used as a filling agent in the manufacture of supplement capsules. This substance has lubricating properties and prevents ingredients from sticking to manufacturing equipment during the compression of chemical powders into capsules or tablets. Chocolate contains cocoa butter, which is high in saturated fat. About a third of the fat in chocolate is in the form of stearic acid.”
Although it is used by many supplement manufactures to release supplements from molding machines, it really has very little nutritional value and cannot be included when you are figuring out if you are getting magnesium in your diet. NSP uses magnesium stearate as a releasing agent and does not use it as a “filler” since no fillers are used in any of the Nature’s Sunshine products.
If you should have further questions regarding your supplement regimen, please consult with a nutritional expert. If you are consulting with your doctor you might want to find out how much experience he/she has had in recommending nutritional supplements to his/her patients.
Magnesium is known as the mineral that relaxes…this may be what you need during this hectic season and any other times of stress. When the heart does it’s rhythmic beat it is of contraction and relaxation—without adequate amounts of magnesium your heart will not be able to relax fully before the next contraction. Although the article put out by the government never once mentions you might have a magnesium deficiency, it is probably still a good thing to read: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/mi/heart_attack_fs_en.pdf
Dr. Lemole wrote a little pamphlet “You Don’t Have to Die of a Heart Attack” and I have many cassette tapes of his lecture (if you can find a cassette player to play it on). Let me know if you want one and you can send me a stamped, self-addressed padded envelope and I will send it to you free.
So, take a Skeletal Strength before bed and “call me in the morning”—Relax and have a healthier heart!

Herbal eGram #600 Fat is good!
Good Morning!
It has been a tradition now for several years that my sister and I bake Christmas cookies together. We have some old time favorites and some even our mother used to make. The day(s) are filled with wonderful aromas and memories of Christmas past. It is a lot of work but we enjoy being together and sharing memories. She has her special techniques and I have mine so, some of the cookies I specialize in, and others she does especially well. For example, I do about two dozen mice each year—these are made with dipping maraschino cherries into melted chocolate chips and then attaching them to a Hershey’s kiss. The stem of the cherry becomes the mouse’s tail. I then decorate the tip of the kiss with pink icing which becomes its nose and stars for eyes.
My sister makes these wonderful tarts that our mother used to make. She has a talent in making the crust fit the mini tin. She also is much better at making crescents from the nutty dough to make another variety our mom used to make. We also remember how lard was used a lot in baking pie crusts. In doing the research for my class on Fats this past Saturday, I realized how badly we were informed so that the makers of Crisco could increase their bottom line.
The one thing we use a lot of is butter. I used to feel butter was bad for you because, after all, isn’t it what we’ve been told. We have the misconceived idea that margarine is heart protective. In researching the theme for this month on how we need good fats, I realized that so much of what we’ve been taught is to promote an industry and not for our better health.
Our mother was sold, by her doctor, the idea that margarine was heart healthy. She unfortunately died of congestive heart failure. She was totally mis-informed of what a healthy diet was all about. I still maintain that most doctors haven’t a clue about what is healthy. They do know sickness and are very good at that. However, they are subject to the same misinformation we are. It is a shame that we are told what is healthy just so a company can increase its profits.
Fat free diets do not make us healthy. Eating fats with proteins help us to metabolize the proteins in the food we eat. Eating butter with carbohydrates actually slow the insulin response so that insulin doesn’t flood the blood stream causing the liver to work harder. So, putting a little organic butter on your toast or oatmeal actually makes it healthier for you. Starches turn quickly into sugar which spikes the insulin response. There are two things that will slow this response down: fiber and fat. Putting chopped apples, or adding raisins, to your cereal will increase the fiber content. So will adding flax or other seeds.
The amount of fat you use is very little because it is higher in calories than proteins and carbohydrates. Creating a balance of eating a small amount of healthy fat with your meals will assist your body in many ways. You can ask for the pdf handout of the class I did on Saturday and I will email it to you. I hope to have the audio up on my website soon. I was amazed at how misinformed we are on what fats do to assist our health.
We should all be taking a fat supplement such as Super Omega 3, DHA or Krill to support our cardiovascular system, skin and immune health. Our nervous system is especially dependent on getting good amounts of healthy fats. If your skin is always dry, try taking two Omega 3 capsules each day and see how it changes. My husband found out that it made his skin healthier—no more chap stick or itchy back.
Ghee is clarified butter and has a higher frying temperature than many fats and is much better for you than frying in vegetable oils. Here is a recipe for making Ghee by Alton Brown: Place butter in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring butter to a boil. This takes approximately 2-3 minutes. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium. The butter will form a foam which will disappear. Ghee is done when a second foam forms on top of butter and the butter turns a golden color. (about 7-8 min). Brown milk solids will be in bottom of pan. Gently pour into heatproof container through fine mesh strainer or fine cheese cloth. Store in airtight container—be sure to keep from moisture or mold will form. Ghee does not need refrigeration and will keep well in airtight container for about a month.
Ghee can then be used to fry potatoes cut into discs or traditional French fry shape. It is also great for browning chicken quickly and then putting the chicken into the oven to bake for about 45 minutes at 350 or until done. Medicinally it has been used in Ayurveda for centuries. “Ghee is sweet in taste and cooling in energy, rejuvenating, good for the eyes and vision, kindles digestion, bestows lustre and beauty, enhances memory and stamina, increases intellect, promotes longevity, is an aphrodisiac and protects the body from various diseases.” (Bhavaprakasha 6.18.1)
I think I’m going to clarify some butter and mix it with raw honey and cinnamon for a tasty spread. Raw honey has some wonderful healing benefits and cinnamon is showing to be a great support for balancing blood sugar. Flax is okay but ghee sounds like it is more healthful. You might try mixing it with Olive oil and spices for a salad dressing. It can be purchased in health food stores if you don’t want to make it. Make sure you buy organic because you don’t want any hormones from cow’s milk in your ghee. Hormones have an affinity to fat. It is one of the reasons a women tends to put on weight during menopause. (but that’s another days eGram).
Use healthful ingredients and remember portion control; and goodies won’t make you fat. The French know that you can enjoy eating; but tasting your food and savoring that taste is what will help with controlling the amount of food you eat. It is senseless eating that gets you into trouble. Eat small bites, breathe in the flavor, chew well, and a small amount will satisfy. The longer something is in contact with your taste buds, the better your brain will connect with the satiation point. You only have taste buds on your tongue. HO HO HO---Happy Holidays.

Herbal eGram #599 A wish for Health & Happiness
Good Morning!
It is popular during this season to connect with those we don’t see very often and wish them Health and Happiness in the upcoming year. Even strangers we meet for a brief moment at a store, the bank, etc. we extend a greeting of Happy Holidays.
Of those two I deem health to be the more important. It is very difficult to be happy when you are in pain or sick. So, prevention to me is high priority. You can’t just wish health. You must actively participate in its maintenance or obtainability. When you wish it for others and are sincere, maybe you should offer some suggestions along with it. I don’t think the average person has a clue on how to obtain health. There are too many confusing messages being submitted by TV, radio, magazines etc.
As you might know, prevention to me is not getting the flu shot or annual physicals. Prevention is what you do on a daily basis to make sure your body has what it needs to be healthy. It is about getting the right amount of sleep, water, exercise, good food, mental stimulation, emotional gratification etc. It is a delicate balance and one must be aware of one’s needs to make sure they are being met.
Unfortunately, most people believe what the media wants them to believe “you can have it all”, if you only “purchase what I’m selling you”. Be it a drug, an object etc. the media do not have your best interest at heart—it is all about the person/company paying for the ad. They make it look as if we can take one pill and happiness is ours. We spend a great deal of money on the pursuit of health based on false information.
I have many people come in to the office and they’ve been spending money on a supplement that has been doing nothing to alleviate their symptoms or deal with the cause of their health condition. Sometimes it is true one must use trial and error techniques in order to find what is going to work for you. But, on the whole if you don’t see something changing within a couple of weeks by taking natural supplementation, you probably aren’t going to see the results you’re looking for.
Most of the time, my clients will see a difference in their health within a week or two. If you are taking a supplement for a month and seeing nothing—you’re on the wrong track or taking an inferior product. Many people trust the label but what you may not know is that most of the supplements sold are “private label”. In other words, they simply pay someone to put a product together and have no active participation in the quality of the actual product.
Nature’s Sunshine tests every batch for contaminants, quality of ingredients and integrity of ingredients. Integrity of ingredients means that there are no substitutes that may have the same response but are not listed on the label. These substitutes can be a cheaper material and the manufacturer can save money but doesn’t disclose it to the person who they are private labeling for. They also do not inform those who are buying it.
There are very few companies out there that actually test like NSP does. Some companies say that they know what is in their product because they grow it organically. This sounds great except we know that growing seasons depend on sunshine and rain fall. They also depend on the minerals in the earth they grow in. If the year has not been a good harvest—too bad; you are stuck with the inferior product because you grew it.
If you search out the best source for a particular ingredient, then you will sometimes have to change who you buy bulk product from. Most bulk suppliers know NSP’s reputation in not accepting inferior product and also know that if it doesn’t meet with the standards set by Nature’s Sunshine, they will not only be rejected but have to pay to have their barrels of product shipped back to them. So, in knowing that, they will sell to someone else the rejects. They know that other companies do not test like NSP so they will find a different buyer. Are you buying NSP rejects?
When I first started purchasing from Nature’s Sunshine I had customers requesting Chickweed. It had been touted by some health expert as a great tool for weight loss (and it does help to break down fat). Unfortunately, the best source of high quality Chickweed was in Russia and this was just after the Chernobyl incident. NSP would not carry Chickweed because every lot they tested was full of radiation. Other companies didn’t care—they were meeting the demands of the public. Maybe you were one who purchased an NSP reject at the time.
There is no such thing as a Free Lunch. If you didn’t understand the process of quality control, you would not know that you were taking a supplement that carried with it uranium fall out. You probably had no clue that it was in your product because it wasn’t on the label (of course). You are also not aware that the government says it is okay to have rodent feces as part of a product (but NSP does not accept this policy).
Health is attained by constant vigilance. Waiver too long from the course and your body will let you know. When you purchase from Nature’s Sunshine, you can trust that someone is making sure you aren’t taking in anything that is not on the label. That what you are purchasing has been tested for anything that isn’t what you are expecting to take in that product. Find out more all the tests that are run on each product and what has been rejected in the past: http://www.naturessunshine.com/us/company/content1/product-quality/vitamin-supplements-are-the-highest-quality.aspx
If you are dissatisfied with any product, contact NSP and they will give you your money back. You need to give it a fair try and take as directed but they have always been fair about product that has arrived damaged and replaced it without a qualm. I’ve been associated with NSP for almost 30 years and have enjoyed being able to talk to real people when I have concerns. I also enjoy the fact that I don’t have to punch a series of numbers to get to a person to ask my questions. When is the last time you’ve had this kind of customer care?
Make this a joyful season by being vigilant with your health and by continuing to follow your health programs to the best of your ability. This is the worst time to be sick—it takes all the fun out of it. If you don’t know where to begin then see a qualified health care practitioner that has your best interest at heart. Make sure you take only the best quality supplements to meet your health needs.
This is the season to be Jolly—remember to keep up with your supplements or all that is Jolly will catch up with you. HO! HO! HO!

Herbal eGram #598 Shut Eye
Good Morning!
Stress can make you sick and one of the worst kinds of stress is lack of sleep. No amount of healthy eating, exercise or other healthy habits can compensate for sleep deprivation. It is the time when the body repairs and replenishes the systems that keep us active.
Before you reach for that sleeping pill consider analyzing why you are not getting the sleep you need. Many people use harmful drugs to assist with sleeping that do not even get you to the deep sleep your body needs for repair. These medications always come with side effects and can overwhelm the liver. Let’s discuss some of the things that may be contributing to your sleeplessness and see if you can do something to change them.
The worst thing you can do is use your bed for activities other than sex and sleep. Your bedroom should be conducive to sleep and that means no TV, computer, or other devices that some people think will help them relax and sleep. These light emitting devices actually interrupt your body’s ability to make melatonin which you need for deep relaxing sleep. Even reading in bed is not good for you.
Serotonin is made during the day in the Pineal gland. This gland makes the chemical serotonin by registering the amount of sunlight you get. In places where it is cloudy and you may not see the sun for weeks, scientists have discovered that the lack of sunlight can lead to depression and insomnia. If you take vitamin D3 make sure you take it in the morning. Think of this as your “sunlight” vitamin. It is very inexpensive and this alone may be the ticket to a good night’s sleep. Take two tablets first thing in the morning.
Vitamin D3 has immune supporting properties and the lack of it has been linked to such chronic conditions as heart disease and diabetes but there is a ton of research that points to the lack of D being linked to Cancer. It is a simple solution that you can rectify easily—make sure you are getting the D3 you need and count on the best: Nature’s Sunshine to provide it. You can get a simple test to determine where your D levels are. Most experts agree that your D levels should be above 60mg/nl to provide the immune system with what it needs to protect against cancer. In fact, many promote levels above 80mg/nl. There are no toxic levels as long as you are taking D3. There are toxic levels when you take in D2 which is what is in milk. This chemical source of D is hard on the liver.
During the day the body makes serotonin and as night time comes closer the production of serotonin decreases and we begin to make melatonin. This hormone has some beneficial elements that scientists are attributing to longevity and cancer protection. http://hartonweb.com/nsp-herbs/bornforhealth.com/?sn=2830-4 Supplements that help the body increase melatonin are non-addictive and can assist with getting better sleep. Natural melatonin can be found in seaweed. Breast cancer cells stopped growing when exposed to Melatonin and those who have swing shift jobs have found melatonin supplements particularly helpful in regaining circadian rhythm and sleep cycles.
Interrupted sleep from those who share your bed might be another consideration. You might have to ban them from sleeping with you. Animals that encroach on sleeping space and interrupt the deep sleep patterns necessary for health are a source of sleep deprivation. This might even include a partner who snores or is a restless sleeper. Even crated animals can emit noises and smells during the night that interrupt your sleep. Noise is a huge inhibitor to sound sleep. One can use ear plugs but it is best to eliminate the source.
Too warm a room may also keep you from getting the solid sleep you need. Experts site that temperatures above 70 can make the body too warm and inhibit it from getting into REM patterns of sleep. REM (Rapid Eye Movement) is the level that newborns spend as 80% of their sleep. Most adults will only attain this toward morning in any appreciable length. In the beginning of our sleep we may achieve about 5-10 minutes per hour of REM sleep. In some studies memory is dependent on healthy REM sleep. Some theorists believe that during REM sleep our brain will do problem solving that we can recall when awake. It is said that Henry Ford used to keep a tablet and pencil by his bed and would write down answers to problems during his sleep.
I’ve found that heating a pillow stuffed with buckwheat and placing it on my feet when I go to bed helpful. If my feet are too cold I can’t sleep well. Some people will go to bed with wool socks to keep their feet warm. Electric blankets or pads can produce EMFs that are harmful to our own body’s electrical system. Electro Magnetic Fields are specific to electrically run equipment such as alarm clocks/radios, computers, and TVs. These specific fields interfere with our own positive to negative energy and can have severe negative effects. Some experts even believe you should pull the circuit breaker before going to bed. Using a wind up alarm or better yet, training your body to awaken at a certain time is better than being jolted awake.
Too much light may also affect the ability to sleep well. The use of room darkening drapes or shades can help if there is light shining into your window. Many people find that sleeping with protective eye shields help not only keep the room dark, but help keep their eyes moist. Some peoples’ eye lids do not stay completely shut while asleep and this can dry the eyes out during the night. Sleep masks are a simple and effective way to protect the eyes at night. If you are prone to eye infection try putting a couple of drops of Silver Shield into your eyes before bed.
Experts state that one should have at least 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep in order for the body to be healthy. It is very difficult for mothers of young children or babies to get the sleep they need as the baby may wake every several hours for nursing or feeding. Whenever possible try to use this time to switch with a partner and used expressed milk to feed the baby. This way the mom can at least get several nights of uninterrupted sleep. I think this might be one of the contributing factors to postpartum depression.
When we were little we said prayers before going to bed. Spending some time in reflection of all the good things that have occurred during the day; or, perhaps some of the things you learned and being grateful, can help you take your mind off of the problems you may have. Being grateful for what you have is like a boomerang—more good things will come your way. Think of 5 things you have and take some deep breaths, put a smile on your face and relax your whole body—let the sleep come to you.
Calcium supplements taken in the evening can also help you sleep better. Your bones are restored during the night by putting calcium back that has been used during the day to balance pH. So, take your D3 in the morning and your calcium supplement at night. If you need relaxing herbs try Herbal Sleep. This remedy has helped many people relax and enjoy a good night’s sleep. The herbs are high in calcium. Herbal Sleep is particularly beneficial for those who are anxious or have sleep disorders. It includes hops, valerian and passion flower (which has been known to quiet those annoying thoughts that keep cycling at bedtime).
If you are disturbed by hot flashes, I’ve found that many of my female clients can help quiet these by sipping on some liquid Licorice Root during the night as soon as they feel a flash coming on. Licorice root feeds the adrenal glands and often these glands are agitated during the day and stay agitated during the night. By strengthening the adrenals you will be able to better handle stress during the day.
Eating sugar or drinking caffeine too late may stimulate the adrenals and insulin responses that will keep you awake. Try doing a small protein shake an hour before bed. This will help keep blood sugar balanced for longer and support better sleep for those people who have blood sugar imbalances. Make sure it is a smoothie that is not made with sugar but of stevia or xylitol as these do not spike insulin response.
Finding what is keeping you from deep sleep may take a little trial and error but it is worth it to know what is affecting your ability to sleep well. You should awake refreshed and ready to start your day with vitality and enthusiasm. If you are waking up groggy and need a stimulant to start your day, look into what could be interrupting your sleep.

Herbal eGram #597 Uninformed
Good Morning!
This is the “Information Age” and yet so many of us struggle with either being overwhelmed with poor information or false information. We can Google our questions and get all manner of answers. Those people we trust to give us correct information, often are the very ones who will profit by giving us false information. The drug companies are supplying the FDA with the reports of their drug’s efficacy. The FDA does no testing to make sure that report is accurate.
How can we make accurate decisions when the knowledge we base those decisions are faulty? We want to research our health questions and yet the research sites have their own agenda and are paid for by the drug manufacturers who will profit by what you read and make your decision to follow through with either taking that drug or doing the procedure. Medical errors kill between 44,000 and 100,000 Americans every year. Often times we are not fully informed of what could go (and has gone) wrong with a procedure.
The new answer to Diabetes is bariatric surgery. How can cutting off 2/3rds of a person’s ability to digest and process food be a good answer to Diabetes? The decision to promote this surgery is not based on its effectiveness but the fact that insurance will now cover it. The surgery is not reversible! So, guess who will have to suffer the lack of nutrient absorption through the years? The advice is not sound! Yet, you will hear it being touted as “safe”. Dig deeper and find out for yourself the adverse events and problems this surgery causes.
How do we find out the truth so we can make good decisions? Physically when we take in food we digest it and then assimilate it. When we take in knowledge we digest it and make it our own through “gut” processes. It has to “feel” right before we make the decision. The pause between hearing, or reading about a procedure is where we let our body help us make the decision. Unfortunately the medical profession pressures us into making decisions based on fear. So, when a doctor states what will happen if you don’t have a procedure or take their prescribed medication maybe we should ask what are the adverse results if we do follow their advice!
It is very easy to accept advice from others and not absorb it because then when something goes wrong we can blame them for our circumstances—guess what; most people do not care about your circumstances even if they were the ones that contributed to your situation. So, if you want others to make decisions for you because you don’t want to be responsible for making the wrong decision, you may fall into the victim trap.
Medical doctors and Pharmaceutical companies promote each other. It is in the best interest of the pharmaceutical company to make sure your doctor knows about the newest drug. When you are “selling” someone on a product you tell them all the advantages and you don’t tell them the down side. Ask any drug rep what the down side of the medication is and half of them won’t know. The drug company only takes the research reports that show how good the drug works and discards the rest. Doctors are paid to come up with the advantage and not the disadvantages of medication. So, if your boss has an agenda—you better follow that agenda.
I could site many instances of where a medication or procedure has done harm: childhood vaccines for example—when something goes wrong who is the one left with the challenge? Who has to deal with the day to day ramifications of that decision? The parent has to suffer daily when a child has learning disabilities or is immune compromised with life threatening allergies. If you do decide to sue it would cost you time, money and emotional upset.
How about the non-labeling of GMO food? Years from now we won’t know why we are in a worse health crisis because we won’t be able to even track it. There haven’t been enough studies to show that genetically modifying a food is safe. We are ingesting viruses that are remaining in our intestinal lining and causing havoc and yet we can’t even determine if a food contains these viruses because they don’t have to label it as such. It is reported that 97% of people were for labeling and yet the Proposition for labeling failed to pass in California. Some say many of the ballots weren’t even counted.
Drug companies falsify reports and the FDA allows the marketing of the drug based on those faulty reports and we become the guinea pig. After about 5 years of health injuries (including death) the drug is removed –but the drug company has made billions in the meantime. Who else do you know who can be sued for billions of dollars annually and still make tremendous profit? Schiff nutritionals were bought out be Bayer—so don’t look to them for good nutrition. I trust Nature’s Sunshine for my nutritional needs because they use the best quality natural supplements on the planet.
Logic and reasoning should factor into decision making. The MMR vaccine isn’t working for mumps and now they want to give a third booster—does that make sense to you? The new meningitis is caused by injection of steroids—choose to understand why the body has inflammation, or get an injection that may cause death! Are we sheep being led to slaughter, or are we thinking human beings? Stop and research! Do your due diligences before you make a life changing decision! Don’t base your decision on fear but on knowing it is the right choice for you.

Herbal eGram #596 Being flexible
Good Morning!
As people age they tend to become less flexible. Not just physically, but mentally flexible as well. We like familiarity and are sometimes unwilling to give new ideas a try. But it is this very challenge to bend and learn that keeps us young. It is that element that sharpens our brain and makes it function better that we must do in order to prevent “old age”. When we become stuck in a rut—we may be digging our grave.
Keeping active is one of the “must do”, not just “want” to do. The longer one sits around the harder it is to get moving. Our cells are bathed in a fluid and when that fluid becomes stiff or oxidized it makes us ache and less able to move freely. The main ingredient in healthy body fluid is water. Fluidity of the body depends on a healthy amount of water. Have you ever noticed that older people tend not to drink much water whereas younger people do? Water is not the same as liquid. Some liquids like coffee and soda actually can be dehydrating.
The formula for drinking water it half the body weight in ounces of water daily. It is best done throughout the day lubricating and liquefying as our body moves through our day. The water can help flush out toxins that contribute to inflammation and pain. If our body is too acid it contributes to inflammation. Drinking more acid like coffee, tea or soda pop just contributes to the acid load. Green drinks can be alkalizing but one still needs water to help flush out toxins. I like to add a little liquid chlorophyll to water to help it taste good and to help flush out toxins.
Minerals are important for healthy joints. Bones are made up of calcium but we also need magnesium for flexibility. Magnesium is finally being recognized by Cardiologists: “recently conventional physicians have become interested in treating patients with acute heart attacks, chronic cardiovascular disease, heart arrhythmias, diabetes, asthma, chronic fatigue syndrome and many other disorders.” http://www.mbschachter.com/importance_of_magnesium_to_human.htm It is important to take a calcium supplement that has equal parts magnesium such as Skeletal Strength. Most calcium supplements still use the formula of one quarter to one third Magnesium to the rest being Calcium. We are magnesium deficient in this country and need to change this formula.
Fats also help to lubricate our joints and healthy fats are needed to keep fluid. One healthy fat is Lecithin. This fat like substance is called a phospholipid and it helps to keep cell structures from oxidizing (stiffening up and getting old). Lecithin is found in the brain and can help keep brain cells flexible. When brain cells oxidize they die. Lecithin is used in chocolate to keep it smooth and flexible. It actually helps to bind fats with sugar.
Hyaluronic acid is also beneficial for keeping joints flexible. This long chain fatty acid will bind with water making the water act like jello around joints to form a protective barrier against wear and tear. Many people have found that they can increase their synovial fluids by taking a supplement that provides hyaluronic acid. Keeping joints fluid is like cushioning their movement. So, it is a combination of water, minerals and fats. Since fat and water do not mix well, we need lecithin to help emulsify and keep the fluids working well together. Using Lecithin and Everflex with Hyaluronic Acid can help your body move more fluidly with less inflammation. But, it you don’t drink water or take in too much acid without flushing, your joints will still not get the benefit of the nutrition you are taking.
It isn’t just one bullet—it is a combination of things like a recipe that will determine your success and your ability to move freely. This recipe includes your ability to have a healthy attitude. If you are stuck in your old rut of pain and stiffness, it is difficult to get out of that rut. Breathing deeply and moving help to circulate the fluids that keep us supple. Take a deep breath; drink a few ounces of purified water; take a few steps; swing your arms and bend your joints. Repeat, repeat and repeat until you are moving more freely.
Remember the Tin Man---he had to move to lubricate the joints. Pouring the oil into the joint wasn’t the only answer. If you want to be flexible you have to move your joints while you lubricate them. When you lubricate make sure you are using the best possible foods and supplements. What you eat does matter and the same goes for your supplement. NSP is my choice when it comes to supplements because I know how strict they are when it comes to quality. You might say I’m a “supplement snob”…how about you?

Herbal eGram #595 9-1-1 for colds and flu
Good Morning!
Many people call me when they have a cold or flu and ask for suggestions on what can be done. It is really so much better if they have some things on hand so immediate help is available. I have attached a list of suggestions for helping you and your family this cold and flu season.
As many of you know, I am not an advocate of flu shots. I feel that people totally misunderstand what happens when they are given a shot. First you are injected with a specific flu type (of which there are hundreds). Chances are it will work and protect you against that particular strain and if you are lucky it will be the one you’re exposed to. If you aren’t, your immune system will be focused on one strain and be unable to identify the strain you do come in contact with and therefore you end up with the flu.
Forcing the attention on one strain is a burden on the immune system. It has to build antibodies to recognize that particular strain and is not able to mount a defense on any other strain you may be exposed to. It does not protect against colds. In fact, if the immune system is not up to the challenge presented by the injection, you will lower the immune response being more susceptible to infection of any kind you may come in contact with. It is of the utmost to make sure your immune system is at its best if you choose to have a flu shot.
This means that you should not have a cold, or cold symptoms, before being injected. If a child, you should not be teething or experiencing respiratory symptoms. It also means that your diet should be without sugar and other stressful foods as well as not going through any mental or emotional stress as this too lowers the immune response. Alcohol should not be consumed within 48 hours of receiving a vaccine as it lowers the immune factors.
Supplements work entirely different than a flu shot. Most supplements work with the body to help defend by stimulating the immune response. Instead of focusing on a particular strain, supplements can help the immune system be more aware of invasion and assist with defending the body against any invasion or to lessen the symptoms. Flu shots force the body to work on a specific (and possible but not probable) invasion.
It just makes sense to cover all the bases with supporting the immune system than to get a shot while hoping and praying you’re working against THE strain that MAY infect you according to government statistics. Some supplements are like specific food that supports immune health. Other supplements actually increase white blood cell production and stimulate the immune response.
Flu shots contain more than just the virus strain. They contain preservatives—some of which are carcinogenic (contribute to cancer). So, while the immune system is making antibodies the body has to deal with a considerable amount of toxins. If your liver is healthy it will probably be able to handle these toxins. If you have alcohol or sugar it lowers the ability of the liver to deal with toxins. There are also factors in the vaccine that are called adjuvants. These chemicals are supposed to enhance the immune response.
Adjuvants include metals such as aluminum or mercury. It has been reported that these heavy metals contribute to Alzheimer disease and other neurological conditions such as MS. There have been adverse reactions to a flu shot that present symptoms of light headedness, dizziness and confusion (proving it affects the brain). There are also reports of inflammation at the site of the injection and muscle weakness (symptom of MS). The makers of the flu shot do not take into consideration that each person is different with a different tolerance to toxins.
Formaldehyde is a toxic gas that has been shown to be cancerous. According to the National Cancer Institute we have been exposed to a lot of formaldehyde due to it being a preservative in insulation for our homes as well as wood used in construction. In 1987, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified formaldehyde as a probable human carcinogen under conditions of unusually high or prolonged exposure. The amount that is injected into you when given a flu shot is two and a half times the amount that is considered safe exposure by the EPA.
Formaldehyde undergoes rapid chemical changes immediately after absorption. Therefore, some scientists think that formaldehyde is unlikely to have effects at sites other than the upper respiratory tract. However, some laboratory studies suggest that formaldehyde may affect the lymphatic and hematopoietic systems. Based on both the epidemiologic data from cohort and case-control studies and the experimental data from laboratory research, NCI investigators have concluded that exposure to formaldehyde may cause leukemia, particularly myeloid leukemia, in humans.
Herbs do not create such harmful challenges to the body. Herbs and vitamins are safe and have very little side effects. Taking them as directed would have only natural side effects that you body deems necessary. For example: if you are congested with mucus and you take a good deal of lobelia—you may throw up and feel tons better afterwards. You may end up having to use the bathroom to get rid of those stored toxins your body is trying to eliminate. Many herbs move toxins out of the body and the eliminative channels will be opened.
Instead of aspirin and ibuprofen in your medicine chest think about herbs that have analgesic qualities and assist the body without causing undo stress. Essential oil of peppermint can relieve a headache in minutes. Tei Fu relieves congestion immediately. Herbs do not have to take a long time to get a response. Often they are quicker than an over the counter medication. Think herbs first and then if you need something stronger talk with your doctor about medication. Natural remedies have been around for thousands of years helping people attain and maintain health.

Herbal eGram #594 Monsanto’s Pandemic
Good Morning!
Anyone experiencing the high wind we’ve had in the last 24 hours can understand how things can be blown about. One year in such a high wind the metal cover to my neighbor (who lives 4 houses away) catapulted over two houses and ended up on my next door neighbor’s front lawn. We’ve seen damage from tornadoes but I’m talking about plain high winds.
If your neighbor is growing Genetically Modified corn how in the world can you keep their seeds from blowing on to your organic garden? Yet Monsanto can come along and sue you for raising GM crops. Monsanto's history of aggressive investigations and lawsuits brought against farmers in America has been a source of concern for organic and non-GMO agricultural producers since Monsanto's first lawsuit brought against a farmer in the mid-‘90s. Since then, 144 farmers have had lawsuits filed against them by Monsanto for alleged violations of their patented seed technology.http://www.sustainablebusiness.com/index.cfm/go/news.display/id/23451
If you aren’t buying organic or local grown food that is not genetically modified, you need to seriously consider it. This method of changing seeds is much different than the old tradition of saving the best seeds for next year’s crop. Learn more about how foods are genetically engineered in a lab using viruses! Genetic engineering is a process whereby genes from one organism are moved into the genome of another organism. There’s an old saying about not messing with Mother Nature.
I have read much of the literature out there on this subject and have watched while companies like Monsanto have tried to push these products into the mainstream without labeling. Many other countries have rejected the use of these products but ours is still fighting over whether we should even know that we are eating them. If you know anyone who lives in California please make sure they vote for the passage if Prop 37!
Although many organic consumers and natural health activists already understand the importance of Proposition 37, it cannot be overemphasized that winning the battle over Prop 37 is perhaps the most important food fight Americans – not just Californians – have faced so far. But in order to win this fight for the right to know what's in our food, we need your help, as the biotech industry is spending tens of millions of dollars for their propaganda.Digestive and colon concerns are rampant in this country and the food we eat are either contributing to health or disease.
What is your choice? Are you part of Monsanto’s Pandemic? Do you have colon problems, allergies or digestive concerns? Stop eating wheat and dairy along with sugar and see how your body does. These are the foods that have been messed with the most. Wheat Belly by Dr. Davis who is a preventive cardiologist and advocates no gluten, less drug use, balancing blood sugar, and is focused on real food!
I know that as soon as I start eating those breads the roll just under my rib cage seems to balloon! I love bread. I used to teach whole grain bread baking classes. For 11 years I was the “bread judge” at the Michigan State Fair. But I am in agreement with this noted doctor—wheat has changed. It is not the good grain it used to be. It has been hybrid to the point of being bad for us. Gluten free has helped many a gut regain health.
In my next class I am going to focus on fiber and its importance in good health. It won’t be about eating bran cereal! Veggies and fruit have fiber. Apple pectin is one of the best soothing fibers—why do you think the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” is true!---could it be the fiber? There are many wonderful grains out there and exploring the way you can use them in your menus will make for a healthier colon and better blood sugar balance.
We need to hit Monsanto and other chemical companies where it hurts—the bottom line. We need to teach them that we won’t be part of their pandemic. Are you willing to give up those donuts, bagels, cakes and all the other foods that include wheat? Join the many people who are going wheat free and find your health again. Send me your favorite recipe and I’ll post it on my website. You might still want to do the occasional birthday cake but for the main part of your eating try staying away from wheat and dairy and see if you can be healthier.

Herbal eGram #593 Think Again!
Good Morning!
Most of my clients who come in know more about their conditions than I do. Unlike many medical doctors I listen to them. I have found that they are the ones who have researched their symptoms and can tell me what is going on. It is up to me then to put the pieces together and figure out what their body is trying to say—not just cover up the symptoms. I feel that symptoms are the body’s way of telling us it is out of balance.
My concern is where do most people go for their research? Most people go to the internet and usually will Google their symptoms or their suspected condition. In general, the first suggested web source is WebMD.
WebMD is the second most visited website for research. We thought it was unbiased but it is totally biased and bends toward the pharmaceutical industry. For example: WebMD had the gall to misinform the public by stating that there have been NO serious side effects associated with HPV vaccination! But, if you check with VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System vaers.hhs.gov/), you would find a totally opposite view!
When doing research on your condition you should triangulate (use 3 different research sites) and even then the bias might be there because they are quoting the same “research”. It is important to note who benefits from the result of the research. Did Merck fund the study? Or, was it done independently? There are very few independent studies because it takes money to do them. The FDA depends on the research the drug company gives them and okay’s a drug based on these “handpicked” results.
Since I don’t like to use pharmaceutical medications unless I have to, I will check out herbal sources. I have a great encyclopedia on my website that gives you the studies that back up the historical information of the herbs or supplements suggested. This source does not cross reference conditions because conditions are a suggestion of what the symptoms relate to and I’ve found that many times there are many conditions that have the same symptoms.
The natural health industry still follows the medical model of diagnosing and prescribing. This is not true natural health. Natural health should be discovering what the body is trying to tell us. For example: You have a fever; no rash—are you fighting an infection? You want to ask yourself: when is the last time I had a normal elimination; how much water have I been drinking? What have I been feeding myself? Have I been getting the rest I need? (Maybe you are run down and simply need to rest, get more water in you and take some immune supports).
Most of us are busy and don’t want to take the time to do what is needed to be healthy. So, we take something that gets rid of the fever and stop the natural response of the body to kill infection. How dumb is that? But, it is what we are trained by the doctors to do. Instead of flushing out the toxins and getting the rest we need it is suggested we take aspirin or ibuprofen and go on with our schedule. We need different thinking!
Of course, if the fever is too high and you are not getting on top of the infection with the right kind and amount of supplements, you would want to get checked out by a medical doctor. But too often antibiotics are recommended for an infection that is not bacterial. Many herbs and supplements are antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral. Medicines are mostly only antibacterial because the pharmaceutical industry hasn’t discovered how to make antifungal and antiviral drugs effectively.
Take Echinacea for example: studies have shown that Echinacea is one of the most recognized herbs that help to strengthen the immune system to fight viral and bacterial infections. The difference between a drug and an herb is the drug is suppressing symptoms and the herb is working with the immune system and not trying to override natural immune responses. Echinacea actually stimulates macrophage activity to help keep the lymphatic system operating efficiently. (See the whole article: http://hartonweb.com/nsp-herbs/bornforhealth.com/?sn=3181-2
Supplementing to maintain health is different than using supplements to gain health. There are some things we simply can’t get easily though our diet and therefore they are essential for maintaining health. As far as I’m concerned there are 5-6 of these nutrients that should be taken in supplement form: Vitamins and minerals; Essential fatty acids (Omega 3); Enzymes; Probiotics; Antioxidants and Fiber. Fiber helps us to move toxins out and it is what November’s theme is all about. The other essential nutrients are good air, water, rest, exercise and of course a healthy diet.
It is also important to have a healthy attitude. This attitude may involve a renewal source for your spiritual side, people who care about you and a purpose that helps keep you active. A good way to help create a better attitude is to find things you are grateful for and focus on those. Take classes in ways to improve you attitude and health. Each day add one more healthy thing to your routine.
Your way of thinking matters! Is it time for you to “change the way you think”?
