Herbal eGram #564 Gifts of the Magi
Good Morning!
Frankincense and Myrrh were two of the three gifts given to the baby Jesus; the other being gold. In ancient times all three of these precious commodities were traded ounce for ounce and valued equally. Thankfully the essential oils of Frankincense and Myrrh do not have to be possessions of only the very rich. Extraction methods have improved making these valuable gum oils available to everyone. They are both astringent and anti-inflammatory. They are both used in the perfume industry. They should be diluted after purchasing them in their pure form as they are very potent.
Frankincense is noted for helping people relax and enjoy contemplation. This time of the year seems to contribute to a feeling of frenzy—especially the week before Christmas. There is usually a lot to be accomplished and Frankincense can help one take a deep breath and calm the emotions of panic and stress. It is very beneficial for the respiratory system.
You can add about 5 drops to a one ounce spray bottle filled with purified water and spritz your pillow to help you have a relaxing sleep. If you are dealing with Asthma—keep it close to you and spray just in front of you to be able to deepen the breath and calm inflammation. You can add it to liquid Lobelia and rub on your chest to help calm the breathing passage and make it easier to breathe during the cold weather. This combination is known to open congested airways: try adding 1 teaspoon of Lobelia Extract to a 1 oz spray bottle—5 drops of Frankincense and then fill the rest with purified water for a spray. You can also add the ingredients to a roll-on and instead of the water add Massage Oil. This handy lipstick size bottle can be kept in a purse or brief case for quick retrieval when needed.
Frankincense is antiseptic so it will kill most bacteria and viruses that abound during the winter. Add some Lemon and you have a really uplifting scent—double the essential oil of Lemon as Frankincense is a deep toned oil and Lemon is light. In most cases you would use 10 drops of Lemon to 5 drops of Frankincense to lift feelings of anxiety or depression. This makes a great roll-on by adding the massage oil and roll onto the pulse points at the wrist for quick tension relief while defending against harmful microbes. You can fill the roll on with Silver gel and be doubly effective against invaders.
Myrrh has been used to help soften body tissues and often get rid of scars and scar tissue. Emotionally it helps with old hurts that seem to scar you from enjoying life. It can be used the same as above mentioned for Frankincense in either a spray or roll-on. It too is anti-microbial and can help guard against many of winter’s uninvited guests like the flu. Because you can add this to a mouthwash for protection against fungus, it has helped people with all kinds of gum concerns.
As a mouth rinse Myrrh has helped a variety of mouth and throat ailments: canker sores, gingivitis, laryngitis, pyorrhea and thrush. It is antiseptic and astringent so it can tighten and tone spongy gums. Add a few drops to a teaspoonful of NSP’s Xylitol mouthwash and swish for about 5 minutes. It will leave your mouth protected while it helps to tone up loose gum tissue. For best results do not rinse with water after you have done the swishing. Just spit out the mouth wash and feel the tingly sensation on your gums.
Myrrh also has uses for Candida concerns such as athlete’s foot or dry scaly scalp. Mix a few drops into a teaspoon size amount of Silver gel and rub into the area twice daily. Myrrh can also be used in a douche by adding it to water and using a douche bag. For vaginal itching you can apply the mixture to a tampon and insert for 20 minutes.
Emotionally, myrrh has the ability to calm and sedate a sense of frenzy while it energizes. It seems like it is doing two opposing things when in fact we often are exhausted from the rush of activities and spraying Myrrh with Lemon can give us the lift we need to continue with our tasks and revitalize our enthusiasm.
Myrrh and Frankincense have both been used in religious ceremonies and as incense promoting deep meditation and improving the intellect. It is believed that it helps one make better decisions after contemplation and application of these oils. They have strong aromatic tones and often are cut with a fruity or lighter tone such as Pink Grapefruit or Lemon essential oil.
A wonderful Christmas blend is 10 drops of Lemon; 5 drops of Cinnamon Leaf and 2 drops of Frankincense and Pine. This blend can be added to purified water for spritzing or drop onto several pine cones for a potpourri. You can also add a drop or two of clove. While making the house smell nice you can be destroying harmful micro-organisms and keep your family healthy. There are benefits to using essential oils that go beyond them just smelling good; just as there are harmful effects to the so called room deodorizers on sale everywhere.
Reports of the dangers of chemical air "fresheners" are just beginning to make the news. A recent MSN article stated that being exposed to air "freshener" chemicals as little as once a week can increase your odds of developing asthma symptoms as much as 71 percent and can contribute to an increased risk of a number of pulmonary diseases. [2] The article went on to state that "A 2006 study showed that people with high blood levels of the chemical 1.4 dichlorobenzene -- commonly found in air fresheners -- were more likely to experience a decline in lung function."
If you love someone share this information about the harmful effects of chemicals that are marketed as fresheners. These chemical products are weakening lungs and lowering immune responses. Also share the benefits of healthful essential oils. Most of essential oils are antibacterial and can support immune function.

Herbal eGram #563 Open Heart
Good Morning!
Tragedy does not pick a season. Accidents, the loss of a loved one—all manner of situations occur that cause grief and pain. Somehow we must get through it. When it happens, we might say to ourselves, “I will never let myself be this vulnerable again”. Or, we might choose to clam up and try to close off our heart from emotion. This technique works for a while to help the body heal. The downside of this continued action is that we harden our heart.
Having a loved one die during the Holidays makes it difficult to handle another person’s enthusiasm for the Season. It often marks the season for us as “this is when so and so died”. This may be true but you’ve lived other Holiday Seasons and you will live more. Are they all now going to be defined by that one event?
When we “harden our heart” we close off the ability for others to get close to us. We cannot experience true joy. This time of year is particularly hard for people who are committed to not allowing their hearts to be vulnerable. A hardened heart cannot allow intimacy. This may be seen in someone who can’t be serious and they joke about everything. It may also show up in someone who battles with depression. One thing is for sure, suppressing grief in this way is hard on the heart.
One of my favorite authors is Amanda Gore. “Generally our stories [things we say in our heads and repeat to others] are based on our past - which is just that - THE PAST. It's gone. No more. It's not the present! While you live in the past and fear of things that happened, you are wasting your present - and recreating the misery of the past into the future!”
In order for the heart to be healthy it needs to know love. The true spirit of Valentine’s Day is about sharing love. This season is also about sharing love and showing it by gift giving. Sometimes the gift is one we’ve made—those are very special because as the person worked on it, they thought of you. Or, maybe it is one they picked out especially for you because they know your likes and dislikes. Perhaps it was an impulse item that caught their eye and once again, it was because they thought of you. Whatever the gift—the thought was of you.
We give to the poor to show them someone cares. We give hugs when someone is in need of friendship. If your heart is not open, sharing is difficult. One feels one must protect the little they have at all costs—but that doesn’t work. It is in giving that we receive. The true words of St. Frances of Assisi are: It is in giving of ourselves that we receive… The greatest gift of all is to give of ourselves, or from our heart. This takes an “open” heart.

Good Morning!
In 1100, the Ancient Guild of Pepperers was organized in London, and, in 1345, was formalized as a fraternity receiving permission from Edward III to incorporate, though the Guild did not receive a formal charter until 1428. In 1373, the fraternity was called the Company of Grossers (due to the fact they purchased in gross amounts). Three years later, it changed its name to the Company of Grocers of London. Now you know where the name of “grocery store” came from. What does garbling have to do with it?
Since time began there have always been people who will try to “pull the wool over your eyes” or, “bait and switch”; telling you that you will get one thing and substituting it for something cheaper. Buyers beware! Back in the 14th century adulterating pepper was a common occurrence. So it was the Company of Grocers who the king appointed to oversee transactions and make sure the goods sold were what they said they were.
We think that the FDA is our “watchdog” but it isn’t so, especially when it comes to pharmaceutical drugs. They leave the testing to the manufacturer and all the drug company has to do is submit the proper paperwork and voila—a new drug is on the market. More than 50% of the drugs put on the market are taken off the market within 5 years. We are the “test market”. Over 500 drugs were taken off the market in 2011 alone! Just in case you thought you could purchase it without a prescription makes it safer—think again. Many of the cold/allergy medications are made with drugs that are harmful enough to cause death.
By the way, the above 500 list was only the cold and allergy meds. There are even more when you count in some of the more dangerous medications recently taken off the market. Avandia, a Diabetes medication, has come under scrutiny and will only be available to those people who have been able to take it in the past. According to many studies this drug contributes to heart disease. Since many people with Diabetes have cardiac concerns, one has to wonder how many heart attacks were contributed to by taking this medication.
A hypertension drug was voluntarily withdrawn from the market earlier in the year by its manufacturer over safety concerns. Although liver toxicity is a well-known adverse reaction to Sitaxsentan, Pfizer took the decision to withdraw the drug after a new potentially life threatening reaction was discovered. So, here we are again—the test group! Pfizer more than likely knew the drug was dangerous but they earned a bundle while they could by putting it out there as a “new miracle” drug for hypertension.
The biggest concern I have is the fact that many drug reps are recommending “off label” use of their medications to get more sales. Many pharmaceutical manufacturers have been fined and “hand slapped” for this illegal procedure but someone is informing doctors how to use them. The FDA does not regulate the practice of medicine. In general, once the FDA approves a drug, licensed doctors can use it for any purpose they consider medically appropriate. Off-label use can vary greatly from one doctor to another. It depends on the doctor's preferences, knowledge, and past patient experiences.
So, it is up to you to make sure the medication you are about to take is appropriate and does not interfere with any other medication you are taking. Some medications compound and it is the synergistic affect that can contribute to severe reaction. Nobody tests combined medications and their possible side-effects. Pharmacists are very informed and they are a good counsel when adding a medication to your regimen. Food and herbs may have some overall response as well, so make sure you are checking out the action of these.
Another reason I love Nature’s Sunshine is that any member can contact the pharmacists at the company and ask about herb/medication concerns. In fact, NSP recommends that doctors contact our pharmacists on staff so that they can know how the herbs work and what to look out for when prescribing. Most herbs and food are nutritious and not a problem. There are some herbs/supplements that have potential harmful effects when taken with medications but in general, this is due to the medication being so harmful to begin with.
An example of this is the blood thinner Coumadin. This very dangerous medication can thin the blood excessively and you can bleed to death. So, anything that may also have blood thinning aspects may be considered dangerous when used in concert with this medication. A supplement by itself is not dangerous but the combination with this medication is what makes it dangerous.
Garbling is sifting, sorting, cleaning, separating, and culling to remove physically unwanted soil, dirt, etc., or separate particles by size and/or quality. The Grocers were given the exclusive right to garble drugs and spices and examine the drugs and prescriptions sold by apothecaries. They exercised their authority over apothecaries by imposing fines for any adulterated or misrepresented preparations. It is a shame we have no such organization that oversees purity, quality and authenticity of product—but wait; we do in Nature’s Sunshine.
Because I take no prescription medication and rarely even take over the counter medication (haven’t in a few years), I don’t worry about taking supplements and combining them. I only take Nature’s Sunshine products and know that these have not been adulterated in anyway so I can count on their potency and purity. I guess you could say that NSP is my Garbler!

Herbal eGram #561 Do You Hear What I Hear?
Good Morning!
Childhood ear infections are a very common thing for Americans. Is there a link to vaccines? A German Study states that 11% of vaccinated children have middle ear infections compared to 0.5% unvaccinated children. This same study relates 32% of vaccinated children have sinusitis compared to only 1% unvaccinated children. There is definitely a link to ill health.
No studies are being done in America as to the health of children who are vaccinated vs. children who are unvaccinated. The only studies being done here are those to make more vaccines.
The one thing being ignored here is the fact that when someone is vaccinated—it is only temporary. There is no lifelong vaccine—they all require a booster or many boosters. Whereas if you actually get the disease such as measles, your body will mark the disease and be able to identify it should you come in contact with it again and protect you against it—this is true immunization. Vaccines don’t immunize you. They count on your immune system to take the foreign substance and act upon it. Unfortunately there is more than the virus in the vaccine and these are what most people object to. There are harmful metals, additives etc. that actually compromise the immune system and organs of detoxification such as the liver and respiratory system.
When you receive a vaccine your immune system goes into overdrive causing inflammatory responses throughout the body. These responses set up a variety of conditions such as more mucus to flush out the toxins. The Eustachian tubes in the ears fill up with fluid. Children have shorter Eustachian tubes than adults and when they sleep the tubes can get clogged with fluid causing pressure which may result in ear aches. If a child is fighting a cold, or teething at the same time as they have been given a vaccine, the immune system is severely compromised. Children often don’t know how to blow their nose properly in order to eliminate mucus—this too adds to the pressure in the ears.
If you choose not to vaccinate or to vaccinate one of the main things you need to do is to support a child’s (and your) immune response. Both otitis media and sinusitis are inflammatory responses of the immune system. Supporting the immune response with modulating herbs can calm the response down so that it doesn’t go into overdrive and can protect the body as it should. The immune system often acts like a mob. Excitation creates an over-response not necessary for the condition at hand. Astragalus is a great modulating immune herb. These herbs are called Adaptogens because they help the body adapt to stress.
Otitis media is the most frequently diagnosed disease in infants and young children (1). Seventy-five percent of children experience at least one episode of otitis media by their third birthday. Almost one-half of these children will have three or more ear infections during their first 3 years of life (2). Health costs for otitis media in the United States have been reported to be $3 billion to $5 billion per year (3). This doesn’t take into consideration the parental concern and possible work loss due to children needing to be kept home.
Some foods make sinus infections worse. Food allergies, especially dairy, makes mucus congest and thicken as it collects toxins (or perceived toxins) in an effort to remove them from the body. Nasal congestion is one of the first signs of food allergy. People often think of rashes when someone is having an allergic reaction but inflammation is the first response and it can show up in a variety of forms, rashes, mucus congestion and often swelling of the esophagus and sinuses. Finding out which foods your body reacts adversely to is a good idea. Sugar can be a contributing factor as it lowers the immune response.
Herbs such as Elderberry and Olive Leaf extract support and protect immune responses and fight infection. They are safe to take on a daily basis during the seasons where cold and flu are most common. Elderberry D3fense has these ingredients and more. It is one of the daily defense herbs I take to protect against being sick during the winter months. I prefer taking herbs which are more complex than just taking vitamin C. Herbs are whole foods and contribute to immune health in various ways.
Children can benefit by taking the chewable Elderberry to support their immune systems. Actually, adults can take these tasty chewables as well but they have to take about 6-8 per day to get the same response as taking the capsules. There is also a great drink: Solstic Immune that one can take during the winter—drink it warm or cold. Warmed with added lemon soothes the throat and provides the body with herbs that help make you well faster.
Children under two, or who can’t chew the gummy supplements and are too young to take capsules can benefit by: open the capsules (2-3) and pour a cup of hot water over it; let steep for about 10 minutes then strain and add to equal parts apple juice. This drink can be taken 2-3 times throughout the day for a toddler. If an infant, you can add a few drops of liquid ALJ to a tablespoon of the tea and put into a nipple for the baby to suck on. I also like to add catnip and fennel to the tea mixture as it aids digesting the milk (baby’s main food). Since the tea is not preserved in any way, it can be kept in the refrigerator for a couple of days.
Silver Shield liquid is a great thing to drop into an ear to fight infection. Make sure you warm the bottle first by running it under hot water. Cold liquids can actually cause the ear to hurt worse, so warming the liquid is a necessary step. Dr. Gordon Pederson (the developer of Silver sol –the nano type of silver used in Silver Shield) recommends that you drop the silver in the ear while it is facing the ceiling—wait 20 minutes, then add cotton to the ear and do the other side the same way.
Is there a link to hearing loss and otitis media or sinusitis? According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association: “Fluctuating conductive hearing loss nearly always occurs with all types of otitis media. In fact it is the most common cause of hearing loss in young children.” Hearing affects our ability to speak correctly and it directly contributes to misunderstandings. So, maybe you aren’t hearing what I am saying and maybe you thought you heard what I was saying, but what I was saying is always filtered by your experiences of what I was saying. No wonder we have trouble communicating with our kids!!

The Farmer’s Almanac has reported that the Mayan Calendar is wrong and that the world will not end in 2012 as predicted. Order your copy One movie and many books have been written about this subject and I’m no authority, but I thought it interesting to bring in the Almanac’s view. Whatever you think about this future prognostication, breathing easy is something we all like to do. If you’ve ever had a bad cold you can appreciate being able to take deep breaths through your nose.
Sinus congestion and allergies are rampant in our society. Chronic sinus congestion affects approximately 20 percent of the population. The Holidays are coming fast and I for one love all the celebrations and busy-ness of them. We’ve created many traditions surrounding the Holidays and I’m thankful I have the energy and health to keep up with them. I recognize that health during the Holidays is the most important thing. Many people suffer with conditions that make it difficult for them to enjoy the Holidays.
When one has to continually try to get past their pain due to injury or chronic illness, it is extremely difficult to enjoy the Holidays. People who struggle with headaches, backaches, arthritis and all the other painful conditions need to examine what they can do to change their circumstances. All medical doctors have to offer is pain medication. Sometimes these medications are necessary to get control of the pain but there are other considerations that need to be made. Sometimes our emotions can create physical pain. Louise Hay, author of many books says that pain is your body crying out for help. She states: “One way to deal with it is to change your perception of the situation; simply do not give in to it! For example, instead of focusing on the fact that your wrist hurts, try referring to your wrist as having a lot of sensation. This can help you get through the unpleasant experience and allow you to focus on healing your mind and soul. Healing the pain will then follow.”
Many people suffer with emotional concerns such as grief, fear and even anger. These emotions can keep us from enjoying not only the Holidays but life itself. Often these emotions are underlying physical pain. I have worked with many people who have different aches and pains that when the underlying emotion was cleared the pain went away.
For example, if you are in a situation that “you can’t stand”—back pain may be the result of underlying emotions and inaction. Shoulder pain often is due to the “should do” in life. What is it that you feel you can’t do? Indigestion is related to having too much to deal with and you can’t “digest” it all. In our society we are taught that we are powerless. The doctors are the ones who know everything and that we should trust them to know what is best for us. This is so untrue!
Our thoughts control how we feel—do doctors know what we are thinking? They may be experts at diagnosing conditions but they do not control our body—we do. Once a person understands the power of their thoughts and feelings they can begin to have the life they want to lead. It is true there are many things we have no control over such as the economy, the weather and the world situation. We can control how we choose to think about these things.
Maybe you need some help in redirecting your feelings and thoughts. In most cases we want to rise above these emotions but just don’t know how. Taking drugs to cover them up just doesn’t work. Trying to think positive isn’t truly successful. Meeting emotional energy that causes negative feelings with energy medicine works amazingly well. One aspect of energy medicine is flower essence therapy.
I have been using flower essences in my practice for over 25 years and seen some amazing results. Often the remedy can begin helping immediately. Sometimes people just feel as if a “load has been lifted”, or in some cases their pain is eased. In yet other cases they just feel a sense of confidence and better determination to change their life for the better.
Feelings have energy! You can “feel the love” of someone who cares about you and it is also true that you can feel the discord when someone is angry with you. To love yourself, is the foundation of health. One of Louise Hay’s affirmations that you should begin your day with is: “This is a glorious day, and every experience is a joyous adventure.” If you find something during the day that causes you to be distressed—examine it! What is really bothering you about this? What lesson do you need to learn from this?
Nature’s Sunshine has made working with emotional healing easy! There will be many opportunities to learn about these new flower essence therapies but even if you don’t know anything about them—they will be easy to use. For example: Be Courageous! Even the name implies it helps people with wherever they are having discord; whether it is with health, finances—even asking the boss for a raise. The flowers in this particular remedy assist the energy of the body to be strong and face the challenges ahead. This might even be a great remedy for a teenager who is going to take a test that day.
Speaking of teens, you might want to slip some of this remedy into their water—Be Response-Able. This remedy deals with suppressed fear and makes us do things that are not often logical. When logic cannot be applied to an action you can bet that it is emotions driving the action. This is where e-motive comes into play in the word emotions. Do you find yourself doing meaningless tasks that waste your time? This remedy helps you sort out what is relaxation and enjoyment; verses what is mindless activity to avoid making decisions and taking action.
How about those bah-humbug people who say they “hate the holidays”? Generally they are suppressing grief and have put a guard around their heart. Remember the first key to happiness is to love yourself—this person obviously has to open their heart to self before they can open their heart to others. Learning to love oneself is to “take heart” or in other words, to “Open Heart”. If your heart is shut off, good energy cannot flow and it affects you physically. Heart attacks, congestive heart failure, arteriosclerosis, and even high blood pressure can all be indications that one has to “open heart” and you need to learn to love and accept yourself so that you can accept love from others.

Good Morning!
Did you know that over half of the hospital rooms examined were contaminated with Super bugs? The study done by the American Journal of Infection Control demonstrated that of all the rooms tested, half were contaminated with a deadly, drug-resistant superbug known as Acinetobacter baumannii (MDR-AB). This bug is antibiotic resistant—no known antibiotic can kill it! You need to take some very important protective measures if you are visiting or staying at a hospital or have loved ones in a hospital.
Another huge concern is pneumonia. HAI pneumonia develops if a disease-causing microbe gets into the lungs -- such as when a dirty, germ-laden ventilator tube is used. The researchers found that people who come down with pneumonia after surgery remain in the hospital an extra two weeks at an additional cost of $46,000 per person for treatment. Moreover, in 11 percent of the cases, the patients die as a result of the HAI pneumonia infection. Many times if you are going into a hospital for a procedure you are told to stop taking your supplements. The reason for this is that most doctors don’t know how the supplement affects your blood’s clotting mechanism and they don’t want you to bleed to death. The offset of this is that if you stop taking your supplements you will take longer to heal and set yourself up for an immune compromised situation.
You should be the expert on what you take and why. I always recommend to my clients that they check out my website and look up the supplement they are taking so they know if it is safe to take and how it works. If you are taking an immune support herb like garlic, you’d have to take quite a bit of it to cause a problem with bleeding. However, if you took garlic, ginger, ginkgo and Omega oil together—it may cause thin blood.
On the other hand, taking an aspirin a day can contribute to break through bleeding of the intestinal wall. Even eating too much of certain foods can cause the blood to be too thin. Of course the worst is pharmaceutical blood thinners like Coumadin. If you are to go in for a surgical procedure you are generally told to stop this drug at least a week before.
The second cause of Hospital Acquired Death is Sepsis. According to Dr. Ali, MD and author of the Sepsis Protocol: Sepsis is the leading cause of death in non cardiac ICUs; severe sepsis causes more deaths than deaths due to colon, breast, prostate and pancreatic cancer all combined. Mortality due to sepsis almost matches that of a heart attack (Myocardial infarction).
As soon as you are diagnosed with Sepsis it is the hospital’s staff main objective to keep you from dying. One thing we excel at in hospitals in the US is Emergency care. So, even though I am bringing to your attention the infection possibilities I want you to know that we as US citizens have the best hospital techniques and trained people for handling emergencies and the best rate of survival. You too have a responsibility--
Preparedness is what is needed. Perhaps another word would be prevention. It is a known fact that most hospitals serve food that is not healthy. They serve food they think you will eat. Most vegetables are overcooked. Meals are based on starch. I haven’t heard one person who came out of a hospital raving about the food—have you? If you are supposed to get your basic nutritive needs met by the food you eat—how can you get healthy by staying in a hospital that regulates what you put into your body? I maintain that you absolutely need supplementation if you are staying in a hospital.
What are the basics? You need a “food grade” multivitamin and mineral supplement such as Super Supplemental. You need a good Omega oil to help the body create healthy cells. You definitely need to take Probiotics because the antibiotics are killing off your entire friendly flora needed for a healthy gut. You need to take enzymes, as these are powerhouse elements that help you break down the food and supplements for easier metabolism. You need to take antioxidants to calm inflammation as it arises and to protect the cells from damage. It also is helpful to take an immune support of which NSP has many to choose from. You want the most dependable source of quality supplements and I feel that NSP beats all the rest hands down!
Here is what that would look like: Super Trio (two packets a day—this takes care of the food grade multi, antioxidant and Omega); Probiotic Eleven (two twice a day away from meals unless you are given widespread antibiotics then you need to do three twice a day on an empty stomach so it gets into the intestines where needed). Take a tablespoon of Silver Shield (twice daily) to support a healthy immune response. Consume two Proactazyme capsules with each meal to help digest supplements and food. You should have with you some LBSII just in case you have constipation. If you do then take two of these with the evening meal and the next morning you should have “business as usual”. I would copy and paste this paragraph and print it off—it should be a menu for self preservation if going to a hospital.
Bring with you wipes that are silver impregnated (Silver Shield wipes)–Silver sol has been proven to kill Superbugs that bleach and other disinfecting measures used in hospitals can’t touch. Wipe all surfaces with these wipes including the bed rails, call buttons and anything else you may find yourself touching.
If visiting someone in the hospital you should take at least 1 teaspoon of Silver Shield to protect yourself from breathing in or touching an infected surface. I also like to spray the bed with essential oils—Guardian is wonderful. It not only protects the body from infection it can also help you sleep more restfully. The first ingredient in this blend is Lavender and it is known for being antiseptic as well as supporting healthy lungs keeping them from infectious microbial invasion. This is an excellent sick room essential oil that can be mixed with water and sprayed on surfaces such as pillows and bedding protecting against bacteria such as Streptococcus pyogenes, which claimed the life of Muppet creator, Jim Henson. The other wonderful essential oils in this blend just add to its effectiveness in sick rooms.
On a daily basis you should take herbs that support a healthy immune system so that your body has what it needs to protect you wherever you may in contact with bacteria or viruses. Don’t leave your health to chance. You need to be proactive and herbs and essential oils have a long history of being protective. Good Morning!
Many cancers are estrogen driven in both men and women. What some people don’t realize is that we get estrogen from the environment and it disrupts our hormone balance. These are the estrogens that are generally contributing to a rise in breast and prostate cancers. Chemical pesticides, DDT, dioxin and PCB’s (polychlorinated biphenyls) are amongst the culprits. Dioxin is the by-product of the manufacture of chemicals using chlorine and includes disinfectants, dry cleaning fluids, pesticides, drugs and plastics – polystyrene and clingwrap in particular. PCB’s are used in lubricants, plastics, paints, varnishes and inks.
These estrogens are also a contributing factor for “man boobs” and abdominal fat.
Plastics or petro chemicals will disrupt hormone balance by filling up the estrogen receptor sites. This rise in estrogen in both men and women not only contribute to cancer risk but also now makes the progesterone or testosterone levels create a “false low”. Using straws and heating food in a microwave in plastic and even drinking water from a plastic bottle have thrown off the natural levels of hormones. Obviously getting rid of these bad estrogens is a smart idea right after preventing them from entering the body in the first place.
Scientists are narrowing the problem of these hormone disruptors down to the environment due to the fact that it isn’t just happening in humans but animals are showing some disturbing reproductive problems such as undescended testicles or both gender developments. These unusual defects along with infertility are a huge problem and knowing the causes are of utmost importance. Once we know the cause we must take action to avoid them.
Some people work in environmentally challenging positions and cannot avoid absorbing these xenoestrogens. People who work with paint, chemical spraying, Hair and nail salons, and dry cleaners etc. are at higher risk for absorbing these hormone disrupters. A smart idea for some people is to use a progesterone cream. The sub-dermal use of the cream assists the body in balancing the hormones in both men and women.
Men with BPH (swelling of the prostate) and other male related problems will appreciate the speed of relief with progesterone cream. Dr. Lee recommends that men use 8 - 12 mg of progesterone daily. Progesterone has NO feminizing characteristics. Progesterone is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor -- it helps prevent the conversion of testosterone into DHT (bad testosterone). Men and pre menopausal women would do better using the ProGYam 5 mg.
Women in menopausal states should use the ProGYam 500 for assisting their body to an easier transition. Good Morning!
There is no question that probiotics are an important part of any person’s health plan. There is controversy over when to take them. Through all the research I have done I still feel it is best taken away from meals by a half hour.
So, take your probiotics upon rising with a glass of water. If you want to take fiber, this is a good time to do that also. Most probiotics reside in the small and large intestine and can be harmed by the strong acids in the stomach. When you take them with food you will destroy some of the beneficial bacteria before they reach the gut. So, taking them again before bed helps friendly bacteria to colonize and assist with immune health while we sleep.
The benefits of friendly bacteria have been researched since the early 1900s beginning with Russian scientist Elie Metchnikoff who showed that excellent health began with a healthy gut. The environment, chlorinated water, stress and many drugs and food will have an effect on the population of these friendly bacteria. His work, even though he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1908 was basically dropped until 1998 when Dr. Michael Gershon labeled the gut, The Second Brain, and wrote a book titled the same. There isn’t much research money granted to the role of probiotics, probably due to the fact no drug company wants to put it out there.
The role of the enteric nervous system (including the gut) is to manage every aspect of digestion, from the esophagus to the stomach, small intestine and colon. The second brain, or little brain, accomplishes all that with the same tools as the big brain, a sophisticated nearly self-contained network of neural circuitry, neurotransmitters and proteins; A whole messaging system that responds to stimulus perceived by the body.
Through different measuring mechanisms we know that the environment of the intestinal system changes when we perceive a flight or fight response. Have you ever felt cramping in the gut or butterfly feeling in the stomach when you were upset about something? This is the response of the enteric nervous system. Supporting the health of this system involves keeping the environment healthy by having an abundance of friendly flora.
Sugar kills healthy bacteria and feeds yeast. Antibiotics and other medicine will also disturb this delicate balance. Yeast is important for our health but when it breaks through the intestinal wall and gets into the blood stream (systemic) it can cause all manner of illnesses including Cancer.
Cancer is a Fungus, is a book written by an Italian doctor, T. Simoncini and he describes how “cancer is an infection (a fungi) not the allopathic premise that genetics is the cause. All conventional cancer therapies are based on a presumed genetic degeneration which in turn is responsible for the unregulated reproduction of cells.” www.cancerfungus.com.
Doug Kaufman, author and talk show host, has also studied the imbalances of yeast and probiotics in relationship to a variety of chronic conditions. His strict phase diet includes eliminating all sugar, dairy, grains, alcohol and some foods that contribute to yeast overgrowth known as Candida. Doug’s Fungus Link 1 book explains, “When mycotoxins, (fungal poisons) are exposed to the blood stream, they cause an elevation in that person’s blood cholesterol as a protective measure. Cholesterol binds the fungal poisons, rendering them less harmful. Voila! Less fungus in the body equals less need for the body to produce cholesterol!”
“An emerging theory focuses on the neurotransmitter serotonin. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that transmit messages between nerve cells. Most of us have heard about the relationship between depression and serotonin in the brain, but the gut also produces serotonin (in fact there are more receptor sites in the gut for this hormone than in the brain), which in turn acts on nerves in the digestive tract. Some research suggests that IBS patients who suffer mainly from diarrhea may have increased serotonin levels in the gut, while those with constipation-predominant IBS have decreased amounts”. Researchers have also found that people who have irritable bowel have decreased levels of friendly bacteria and when these people supplement with probiotics, their symptoms improve and irritation is lessened. However, emotions have a huge part in the diminishing of probiotics and therefore these friendly bacteria should be added to on a daily basis. This would make sense as we know if we are nervous many of us will have stomach upset or feel like we have to go to the bathroom. It often causes the reverse where we can’t go to the bathroom.
Probiotics (Pro=for; biotics=life) assist the body in breaking down calcium and B vitamins. Plus, 80% of the immune system resides in the gut. I personally feel that because people are so deficient in friendly bacteria they are more susceptible to food poisoning and allergic responses. Dr. Doris Rapp refers to the need for friendly bacteria in her book, Is This Your Child. Many children are lacking these in their colon due to chlorinated water, eating and drinking too much sugar and perhaps even a deficiency at birth.
Caesarian births do not allow for the proper exchange to occur where the mother’s vaginal fluid full of probiotics bathe the baby as it exits her body. Nursing mothers can take probiotics and it will pass through the milk but they can also put some of the probiotic powder on their nipple for the baby to consume while they nurse. Probiotics may also be added to the warmed formula for infants especially if they experience colic.
Eating yogurt isn’t enough! Today’s yogurt is highly pasteurized and therefore the friendly bacteria have been killed in this cooking process. One hundred years ago when the study was first conducted people did not cook their milk –it was raw from the cow. Traditional yogurt is made in temperatures of just above 100 degrees to culture. Therefore any yogurt these days that claim they have live bacteria have added these after the yogurt was processed. Also take into consideration that if that yogurt has sugar in it, you are negating the good these bacteria will do. It may relieve some symptoms but you will not do much to change the environment and improve the health of the mucosal lining.
Probiotics are included in my weight loss regimen along with digestive enzymes, vitamin D3 and a multi vitamin mineral pack. Many others have been able to get rid of their medications such as blood pressure drugs, cholesterol meds and even blood sugar lowering drugs. Probiotics are a healthy addition to anyone’s diet—they have been in mine for over 15 years and I feel they have helped me fight off many infections.

Good Morning!
Last week Dr. Mercola exposed some fraudulent research studies pertaining to cancer and now this week the media is reporting how vitamin E can be useless against cancer. Really?! The beginning cost for such a study is $50,000. Is this their idea of “Cancer Research”? When will the public wake up to the fact there is no such thing as a “Silver Bullet” that is going to cure cancer. Cancer is the number one disease being researched and paid for by the pharmaceutical industries and your hard earned dollars (if you are donating to the American Cancer Society or it’s subsidiaries).
This particular study determined that vitamin E had no effect on prostate cancer and scrambled the numbers to come up with a 17% greater risk of developing prostate cancer if you take it—when in fact, if you run the numbers properly it is only 1.1%. And this study did not take into effect the lifestyles of each individual or their diet. The study does not state the purity of the vitamin E used.
In 2003, data from the Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta –Carotene Cancer Prevention trial showed that smokers taking 50 mg of vitamin E each day had a 35 percent reduction in prostate cancer. In the Physicians Health Study II, participants took the same amount of vitamin E as the men in the Select trial – 400 IU, but it had no effect on their risk of prostate cancer. Just because they used the same amount does not mean they used natural E. The study may have been conducted just to show the ineffectiveness of taking supplements and blast the supplement industry.
After all—it is paid for by the pharmaceutical industry and the study was done by the National Cancer Institute which is funded greatly by the pharmaceutical industry and those people who create medical devices such as mammography equipment. Why would they want to support an industry that competes (so to speak) with them? Some pharmaceutical industries do make dietary supplements but that is not where the big money is—it is in drugs.
Dietary supplements vary in quality—some include mostly to all synthetic ingredients (and the article did not state if synthetic or natural E was used) and I agree, these supplements should not be taken. However, I much prefer to take a lot of whole food supplements then take one drug. Every drug has a risk/benefit ratio which means—it is going to cause harm. Supplements may not be metabolized; may be eliminated without helping, but it is truly rare if it causes harm.
If a person takes one Daily vitamin (or in this case—one 400IU of E) and expects it to halt all disease processes in their body—they are sadly mistaken. A person must be responsible for nurturing their body. Supplements should be just that—they add to the nutrition that is being taken as food. Our body is the combined effort of what we consume (both physically and emotionally), what we absorb and what we don’t eliminate. Living in a toxic environment, whether physically or emotionally is going to impact our health and no amount of a single vitamin is going to correct that. This is common sense and it doesn’t take a placebo controlled, cross over, double blind study that may cost upwards of $50,000 to prove that.
It is a waste of taxpayers’ dollars, as far as I’m concerned, to create studies to determine whether an isolated vitamin is going to deter cancer. It’s the same philosophy that a drug discovery will kill or eliminate all cancer—get real. There are many things that contribute to cancer and taking one isolated pill isn’t going to correct the problem. As I mentioned last week: Each choice you make in how you think, eat and act is a stroke on a scorecard that either results in health or sickness—what is your score?
It’s not the single thing you do but the collective things you do and that you do enough good to compensate for the bad. Taking a good food grade multivitamin and mineral supplement is a start but one should eat healthy, think healthy, and do healthy along with that supplement. What are you filling your body and mind up with?
Do you eat good wholesome food, or frozen dinners that are micro waved? Do you eat farm fresh food that is minimally sprayed or organic—or do you eat canned vegetables or fast food? Yesterday was World Food Day to help create awareness of Genetically Modified food and the fact that our government doesn’t even mandate labeling for this toxic food. GM food has never been tested for safety in the long run. What we do know now is that it can affect the way our intestinal bacteria work. This is a huge health problem with more and more people showing gut dysbiosis (n. an imbalance in the intestinal bacteria that precipitates changes in the normal activities of the gastrointestinal tract or vagina, possibly resulting in health problems. We have to try to compensate for bad food, air, water, environment etc. We have to compensate for tissue weakness, congestion and inflammation—whatever the cause. And if at all possible, we have to try to avoid taking in the bad. If we do take it in, we must eliminate well.
There recently was a report that one should not drink a lot of water—what rubbish. If you don’t drink adequate amounts of water you won’t be able to detoxify properly. Where is the common sense in these reports? The lymphatic system needs water to detoxify; the colon needs water to work effectively—our body is mostly made up of water. Liquid such as caffeine drinks and pop harm the body—water is helpful providing it is not full of toxins such as chlorine and fluoride. It’s about time Americans started recognizing what is common sense and not pay attention to studies driven by industry with their profit line as the reason for the study. It is also time for Americans to start considering health and not focus on disease.

Good Morning!
The scientific community: i.e. Medical Doctors and Pharmaceutical industry, tend to separate and define body parts until you have the idea that the body parts are what count. For example: breasts and prostate. I don’t know about you but I’ve never seen breasts that are disembodied. They are generally attached to a body!
In alternative medicine we look at the whole body and determine what is going on that may be contributing to ill health in the individual parts. Each part has an active role in the health or well being of the whole. What we eat, think, do on a daily basis determines the health of the body—we are dynamic. There is nothing stagnant about us. We are constantly building cells and cells are dying off.
When you take into consideration that our body and mind contribute to our health it sheds a different light on the result. The simple facts are: we are made up of trillions of cells and each cell needs to have nutrients to survive and has to eliminate toxins that form from metabolizing and when it is time for that cell to die that it replaces itself.
The new cell has the information of what it needs to function and is assisted by the energy of the body; the nutrients available and the elimination process. The new cell is either healthier or sicker than the cell it replaced depending on the availability of nutrients, energy and elimination. Now, expand that cell to create tissue, organs and systems and you have a body.
If we give the new cell the nutrients it needs and in the form that it can utilize, then it can perform at optimum levels. The question is: what are optimum levels? Nutrients are such things as amino acids, fatty acids and carbohydrates or healthy sugars. If we tend to eat nothing but sugary food and starches—the body will have to use these sub-optimum nutrients and perform at below optimum function. We know that a donut or bagel and coffee for breakfast is not healthy. And yet, how many do it?
Keeping a body healthy is simple: Do more that creates health than that which damages it! Health is not promoted by taking chemicals in the form of drugs (legal or otherwise); it is promoted by the best nutrients you can provide and making those nutrients available at the cell level—digestion. If you eat the best available foods and don’t digest these into healthy nutrients, the cell still won’t get what it needs to perform at optimum levels.
Digestion is the key to health along with elimination. You must take in the good, digest and assimilate then eliminate what the body doesn’t need. You can determine how you feel if a food is not digesting. The best thing to do is to listen to your body and not try to trick it by “overcoming” the indication with drugs. For example: you eat some food that causes you to have a stomach problem and you continue to do so and take medication that “makes it all okay”. How dumb is that?
No amount of scientific genius can compensate for someone who goes against nature. If your body is giving you indigestion—perhaps you need to pay attention. Many people use up their digestive enzymes and lose the ability to break food down into usable nutrients even before the age of 40. Most people need to start taking enzymes around the age of 30 in order to get the best from the food they eat. Enzymes are the key to good health.
Recently, the news has been all about Steve Jobs’ passing. He was the mastermind behind Apple computer and its success. He died of complications due to pancreatic cancer. None of his program included the possibility he may have been deficient in enzymes which the pancreas produces in the process of digestion. None of his extremely expensive protocol included assisting the body with good nutrition and enzymes. It all was about the body parts and how to “attack” the cancer. You cannot expect doctors to create health—you must do that on a daily and maybe hourly basis. Each choice you make in how you think, eat and act is a stroke on a scorecard that either results in health or sickness—what is your score? How much medication are you taking to “control” symptoms of ill health? What are you actively doing to eat better, focusing on the joys of life and acting by using the body in healthy ways? The parts define the whole and that includes each thing you do. Focus on health – not sickness.

Herbal eGram #553 What’s that smell?
Good Morning!
The distinctive odor of rotten eggs--once you’ve smelled it, it’s hard to forget. What I really wanted to title this email was: the old fart. But, taste determined otherwise. The release of the gas that is most embarrassing is not the loud one, but the one that smells. There is a whole science behind studying released gas—not fartology but flatology (as the releasing of bowel gas is called flatulence). Yes, people, there are scientists who devote time and energy in studying this and more. They also determine odor with a “smellometer” known as their nose!
Americans have very poor digestion and elimination. The food we typically eat is part of the cause but stress interferes with the body’s ability to digest properly. Then we compound the problem by eating too much. Many people have benefitted by “Eating Right for Your Blood Type”; taking enzymes and probiotics for assisting in the digestive function and reducing stress especially when eating. Sulfur is the third most needed mineral in our body right after Calcium and Phosphorous. The lack of this mineral may play a huge role in blood sugar imbalances and joint health. As we age we need more and more of this important mineral. Perhaps this is where the saying “Old Fart” comes into play. When we lack this mineral we have symptoms one associates with old age: Diabetes, Arthritis and even mental impairment. We know our digestion slows as we age and some of the research I have done shows that as young as 20 years old we begin losing our ability to digest foods. I actually believe some foods cannot be digested properly from day one.
Dietary sources of sulfur are found in proteins and raw unprocessed foods. Once the food is cooked it loses its sulfur or binds in a way that is unusable by the body. Raw Milk is a good source of sulfur, unfortunately our government requires milk to be pasteurized and that means cooked to kill off bacteria. So, milk as we know it, is not a good source of sulfur.
One way to get therapeutic doses of usable sulfur is through taking the supplement MSM. MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a naturally-occurring source of organic sulfur and a component of insulin as well as the enzyme needed for utilization of glucose, glucokinase. Lack of sulfur, according to researchers, may very well be the reason for escalating tendencies toward diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Most of the research on this important mineral was lead by Dr. Earl Mindell and published as The MSM Miracle in 1998.
Minerals in the ground are inorganic and cannot be absorbed or utilized by humans or other animals. This is where the symbiotic relationship we have with plants once again comes into play. Plants take up miniscule particles of these minerals from the earth and “digest” them adding a carbon atom to them making them organic compounds. When plant eating animals chew up the plants the mineral becomes part of their flesh making amino acids.
Membranes are cushions. There are actually four types; Mucous membranes: respiratory system, digestive system --Serous membranes: body cavities --Cutaneous membrane: skin --Synovial membranes: movable joints. You can think of them as protective barriers. All cells (and all organelles within cells) are surrounded by membranes. A membrane consists of two layers of molecules situated opposite of one another and consisting of an essential fatty acid on one end, and a sulfur containing amino acid on the other end.
Sulfur bridges form flexible connections between the cells and the surrounding connective tissues. This allows the cells to retain their elasticity. When sulfur is in short supply, the cell wall hardens, and the cells lose their elasticity. That’s where the aging process can either be slowed or escalated—the amount of sulfur available to create the flexibility in these bridges.
Those people who suffer from allergies have been found to be low in the mineral sulfur. MSM is one of the best ways to correct sulfur deficiencies as most people deficient in it are also hampered with poor digestion.
