Most people have asked that question at one time or another and some on a regular basis. It’s the end of the year and some of you may be asking: “Where did the year go?” Yesterday we gave a surprise party for my sister’s 75th birthday, and she asked: “Where did the time go?” Some moments seem so fleeting in retrospect and others seem to drag.
If you are a person who wakes in pain, whether that pain is physical or emotional, the days can drag and the moments measured by depression. You may even be taking medication for depression. The problem with most medications you need to take more and more to accomplish what you want. When you take natural supplements that feed the body you tend to take a lot in the beginning and then drop down to less because your body needs less for maintenance.
Take SAMe for example. This substance is found in the body and is synthesized from the amino acid methionine (with the help of folic acid and B12). We now know that high levels of homocysteine can be improved by taking folic acid and B12. Homocysteine is a marker for heart disease. So, if you have had a blood test that says you are high in homocysteine, you might also want to look at what SAMe does.
SAMe tissue levels are typically low in elderly people and in individuals suffering from depression, osteoarthritis and various liver disorders. Increasing levels of SAMe has been shown to be very effective in reversing some of the symptoms associated with low levels of this substance. The largest human study of SAMe involved over 20,000 patients with Osteoarthritis of the knee, hip and spine. After 8 weeks of supplementation, 71% reported “good” or “very good” results. It was well tolerated by 90% of the patients with minimal side effects. Another study which followed 108 patients for 2 years reported that all patients experienced significant decrease in morning stiffness and pain at rest and during motion. In addition, patients who had also been suffering depression found relief from these symptoms as well.
The recommendations for dosage with severe symptoms were: 2 tablets three times a day with meals for one week; the next week 2 tablets with two meals and then 2 tablets per day until the desired level has been reached. Maintenance dosage is 1 tablet per day. Since the substance involves liver detoxification and may affect other medication dosages you should seek the advice of a medical doctor if you are taking prescription medication for pain or depression.
Be particular about the brand you use. Since SAMe is an active molecule, if it is not enteric coated it may actually begin to break down prematurely in the bottle and you may not be getting the dosage you think you are getting or that the label says is in it. Also, individuals with diagnosed bi-polar should not take SAMe unless under medical supervision. The antidepressant effects of SAMe could lead them to a manic phase in some individuals.

Good Morning!
What does success mean to you? To some it means having financial stability. To others it means having friends and/or family. And to others it may be having good health. Whatever success means to you I think we can agree that it means having Joy in your life.
Joy is what we wish for during this season…Joy to the World. It’s a wish for Peace and Love. It is what I wish for you. I thank you for another wonderful year of being able to share important health messages that are filled with hope. Many of you have written how a message has helped you in some way. I love getting feedback from you, especially the good kind but also the constructive kind. I’ve changed the way I do the eGrams during the years. I’ve given you a glimpse and then if you find it of interest you can find the whole message on the link I give you to my website. This link will also give you a year’s back issues of eGrams so that you can tell others about one that has particularly inspired you.
It has been a particular joy of mine to be able to help and support others in their health goals. Recently, I heard some good news about my son, Bryan’s family dog—Honey. At the beginning of the year we found out that she had a sizable tumor that was cancerous near her bladder. There is a huge craze for “energy” drinks that gives people the misinformed idea that you can actually stimulate the body in creating energy. These drinks stimulate the adrenal glands into producing epinephrine or norepinephrine. They sometimes will contain these hormones.
Beating the adrenals and forcing them to produce epinephrine gives it signals that you are in stress and need the hormones that deal with stress. Most people who are tired or exhausted are not feeding their body properly and not getting enough rest. These are very important for proper energy production and renewal. Wearing out the adrenal glands has some terrible consequences.
Fatigue and sleep disorders are part of the symptoms associated with Adrenal burn out. The adrenal glands emotionally have to do with decision making. When they are not functioning properly we tend to make poor choices. If you have a pattern where you have made some bad decisions perhaps you might look into supporting your adrenal glands. Resorting to quick fixes such as energy drinks contribute to the pandemic we have in this country of obesity and diabetes. Free radicals are not addressed by energy drinks and some experts believe poor food choices actually can contribute to the high inflammation underlying many disease conditions such as cancer, heart disease, arthritis and various other neurological disorders.
We know about the antioxidant rich foods such as colorful vegetables and fruits but there is one antioxidant that assists the antioxidant functions in the Kreb’s cycle of energy production; crosses the blood brain barrier and is referred to as the “universal antioxidant”. In vitro research it has been shown to extend the life of many other antioxidants such as CoQ10, Vitamins C and E as well as chelate heavy metals from the body. That powerful and little talked about supplement is Alpha Lipoic Acid.
ALA is unique in many aspects of energy production and has been shown effective in many research studies to assist with the uptake of glucose thereby making insulin more efficient. In Germany it has been tested against oral hypoglycemic (blood sugar lowering) medicines. In one placebo controlled trial 74 type II diabetic patients were given either 600, 1200, or 1800 mg of alpha-lipoic acid daily or a placebo. After 4 weeks all those in the “treatment group” showed a 27% decrease in insulin-stimulated glucose uptake compared to the placebo group. The amount of sugar one takes in will affect inflammation levels. The faster that sugar is burned will cause even higher amounts of inflammation. It can also cause hives or rashes to those sensitive to the ingredient. The main objective is to stay hydrated and pure water with trace minerals can be far more effective than sugary and salty drinks. Good Morning!
A bud in spring; a newborn infant; a twinkle or glimmer—words of promise and new beginnings. These words often offer hope and encouragement for those who have been burdened. A smile and/or a hug is often enough to set a glimmer or spark in a person’s heart to keep them encouraged.
One of my favorite animated stories is the one about the Island of Misfit Toys. Santa is still Ho-Ho-Hoing and the toys are encouraged that they too can have meaning. At some time during our life we feel like a misfit and can empathize with those who don’t fit in. But being unique is good too. Create a Glimmer book! Start looking for things that give you a little spark, or make you feel like smiling. This is a great tool to turn to when the cycle of life seems dim and dark. Cut out pictures or words than encourage you and paste them into a binder. They can be about your family, places you’ve been or would like to go to. They can be about poems or sayings you like to read. They can even be a cartoon. Anything that gives you a good feeling when you look at it; put in this book.
When one has been hurt and feeling betrayed it is normal to harden the heart. You want to protect yourself from ever feeling hurt again. It is a self-defense mechanism. The problem is that if you have no way of turning on hope again, discouragement can be a vortex that drags you down. Pretty soon you don’t want to get up in the morning. You need something or someone to help you through the down times and destructive things are not the answer.

Generally speaking a launch is another word for propel or to push off. We’ve seen ships launched and astronauts launched into space. Herbal eGram #645 What is it?
Good Morning!
Discerning a diagnosis is what medical doctors must do in order to come up with treatment. The AMA has guidelines and codes for every diagnosis. Once something has been diagnosed then there are certain protocols for that diagnosis a medical doctor needs to follow. Many conditions are simply educated guesses. If you want to understand how difficult this can be from a symptomatic approach, check out the symptoms of Sarcoidosis. This condition can demonstrate Acute abdominal pain all the way through the alphabet to Wheezing.
The diagnosis precedes the treatment but in between is the testing which includes xrays, CT scans, biopsies and a myriad of other options to come to the conclusion and eventually the only thing medical doctors have to offer is steroids. In a bit I will discuss steroids but what about congestion?
The word congestion means slow or “non-moving”. Sort of like a traffic jam. If you’re on your way to work do you care about whether it was an accident, construction or something else slowing your progress? You just want to get on your way! You also may want to know how delayed your travel will be. If the congestion is in your head it will create an inability to think clearly. You may mount a fever to help burn up the congestion. This is your body’s immune defense at work.
You can assist the body in eliminating the congestion with a plethora of supports. One might be to drink water as this adds more liquid to the mucus produced. Mucus is really what is congested. Every cell is bathed in a fluid. When this fluid becomes thick it is called congestion. The congestion can be so bad that it forms a glob (tumor or cyst). Breaking down the glob requires enzymes---another eGram.
If water doesn’t seem to break down the congestion you might want to try some immune boosters to act on the cause which is generally a bacteria, virus or fungus. Some natural immune supports work to fight all three irritants. You don’t have to know which it is. Take Silver Shield for example. It works in the blood stream to fight infection. I like things that work with the natural body response. The immune system is responding with inflammation because it identifies an invader and is trying to eliminate it.
How can we naturally boost the immune/adrenal response? First of all examine what you’ve been doing to contribute to the inflammation. Food, over use, Stress etc. all contribute to wearing down the adrenals and many times we don’t give our body the time it takes to heal. We want to continue abusing our body and not have pain. Last month I spoke about adaptagens and how these amazing herbs can help the body heal faster by giving it nutrients to heal. This is way different then suppressing symptoms!
I will work with natural immune supports to see if the symptoms subside. In general, if something shows no response within a week; I will look at what I’ve been eating to see if that may be a trigger and cut out things like sugar, dairy and gluten (the prime dietary suspects for inflammation) and continue with my immune supports. If no response within another week by cutting out dietary concerns, I will look at emotions and find out if there may be an emotional trigger that is holding the body back from healing. Sometimes I will jump right to that if someone can come up with a situation that occurred around the time of the arrival of symptoms.
My thoughts: It doesn’t matter if the condition is bacterial, viral or a mutation of either—some natural supplements like Silver Shield, will help the immune system find it and deal with it. I love just about anything Disney! When I was a child I remember watching Walt Disney on TV and getting lost in his presentations of Tomorrow Land; Frontier Land; Fantasy Land etc. I love the Disney parks and the characters. I love the movies!
In “Lion King 1 1/2” We found out how Timon met Pumba and how this unlikely pair set off to comfort each other and support the “no worries” concept. We could learn from the, “leave your worries behind” philosophy. How opposite can anything be: a meerkat and a warthog as friends! Yet, they sing this song of leaving your worries behind in an effort to cope with their days.
The Holiday Season represents a time of stress for many people. I happen to really enjoy the Holiday Season and its traditions. It’s a time of family get-togethers and having fun sharing. It also is a time to realize that people can be different from us but we can enjoy them just the same. Hakuna Matata means not only “no worries” but in Swahili it means inviting in a stranger that has traveled far and may be hungry or in need of rest. Opening our hearts to new possibilities may be tough if you have trust issues. We have created a trigger that doesn’t allow us to be vulnerable. The scare of Superbug infestation is rampant in hospitals but also in other public places. The answer is not a stronger antibiotic. Doctors are at a loss to fight these infections. Some of the names are becoming familiar: MRSA, SARS, SPR, KPC and many more. They basically live in the mucus membranes: nose, stomach and lungs. Do you think that washing your hands is enough?
The resistance of Gram Negative bacteria is a concern of most hospitals. What they found is that people can be carriers but not have any indication of the disease. All of the speculation is that we need to deal with these from an exterior solution. Wash hands and keep your environment clean preferably with strong antiseptics. Everywhere you look there are dispensing machines to kill bacteria.
But, what if we look at it from the inside out? What if the problem were not that these resistant micro-organisms are out there but the fact that we no longer can fight them. The overuse of bacteria has made these strains mutate and become impervious to medical solutions. They are also fast growing.
If some people live with it but don’t succumb to it then why can’t we all? Is it because the people who do not succumb to the disease have a revved up immune system? And that their immune system protects them from bacteria and viruses that can mutate faster than a drug can be manufactured to fight it?
Attacking these Superbugs from the exterior is the wrong solution in my opinion. They are smarter than the drugs available and no new drugs are being produced. What steps are you taking to keep your immune system healthy? It no longer is simply about eating healthy. If you aren’t supporting your immune system with multiple solutions, you too are subject to inviting a superbug to inhabit your body.
Whether you succumb to the ravishing that can take place as soon as you provide the microbes with weakened tissue to feed upon, is up to you and how healthy your immune system is.
My daily immune support begins in the morning with a tablespoon of Silver Shield and then an ounce of Thai Go to make sure my body has plenty of nutrition to fight inflammation; and two probiotics to support gut health. After I wash my face, I use Silver gel on my face, in my nose and behind in my ears making sure I spread it around each nail and cuticle. At breakfast I take vitamin D3 and in the fall and winter months I also take two Elderberry De3fense along with my multi vitamin and minerals supplement; Omega 3 (this helps nourish the skin) and CoQ10 and several other herbs to support various strengthening my body.
This may seem like a lot of supplements but remember… I take no medications! Medications do not support health and usually come with a side effect. We live in a sick society. Clearly what we are doing isn’t working. We must learn how to create health instead of fighting disease. Do you have basic knowledge of how the body works? Some people have no clue where their stomach is located. They will tell me they have stomach pain and point to their intestines. They help filter the blood; control body fluids and electrolyte balance. They will take calcium from the bones to balance pH when the blood is too acid.

Taking enzymes with your meals will also assist the kidneys because undigested proteins contribute to acid blood levels. Diabetes and high blood pressure are damaging to kidneys. Good Morning!
To speak with a “fork tongue” means; to make false promises or to speak in a way that is not honest. Dr. Oz is a popular show but let’s step back and take an objective view. I’ll take one of his programs to start this observation. This show is partly about the advantage of taking Garcinia Cambogia.
First of all he portrays it as “the newest fat buster”. NSP has had this herb available for at least two decades and bumps it up a notch by adding Chickweed (another fat buster) http://hartonweb.com/nsp-herbs/bornforhealth.com/?sn=906-9 It’s one of Dr. Oz’s thing to claim “you heard it first…” I know he has to sell his show but a little more honesty would be desirable. Americans watch this show for advice. What he does is give you a glimpse and then you go rushing off to the health food store for his next “new thing” and expect them to have it. Well, if you think about it…if it is so brand new, what makes you think the health food store has IT. Maybe IT has been around for a long time and Dr. Oz is just getting IT.
Dr. Oz promotes the herb, Garcinia Cambogia as basically the only thing you have to take to lose fat: no exercise, no dieting—No effort! This type of thinking promotes the “one pill does it all” attitude that is not healthy. To simply want to burn fat and not watch how you eat is setting up a person for failure. Eating the wrong foods got you where you are, not the lack of a nutrient. Yes, the nutrients will help you get balanced but you must then look to healthier lifestyles and habits of eating to maintain fitness and health.
Dr. Oz then goes on to show his expert on Garcinia who’s double chin is wobbling as he speaks—does he take is own advice? How can a person believe a fat expert when he is a “fat” doctor? If he has studied this herb for years, don’t you think he would be interested in getting rid of his fatty chin?
The other thing I object to is that every YouTube presentation of Dr. Oz begins with a drug commercial. Do you really think that’s health oriented? I don’t watch the TV show but I bet that it is supported by Big Pharma. Dr. Oz is quite the showman but he does not represent honesty and integrity. He says, “I don’t make anything on this, I don’t sell it”! This is supposed to make you feel he is honest because he has no financial investment in what he is touting. The truth of the matter is; he is selling himself and his show.
Please watch this with some of the objectives I’ve pointed out and see if you can come up with you own “fork tongued” version. When he finally gets to Dr. Julie Chen you can start believing. If you really want to “bust the fat” you need to step up your metabolism and stop eating food that contributes to fat gain. “Belly Fat” is an indication that you have one of the symptoms of pre-diabetes, or metabolic syndrome. It is an indication that you aren’t metabolizing the food you eat. Metabolism is the process where the body turns food into energy. It depends on the right kind of food. Starches are stored if not used right away. This is a discussion for my December Herbal Hour class in Berkley.
You can take fat busting herbs such as Garcinia Cambogia and Chickweed but it is also important to use fiber. Fiber will attract fats and help move them out of the body. Some people have had good results using “Fat Grabbers”. This is a combination of fat grabbing fiber that sweeps through the blood stream and carries bad fat out the colon. You take 4 capsules 15-20 minutes before a meal.
Good luck busting your fat up and getting rid of it. You will have better health if you decrease sugar and starches and exercise. Watch out for those fork tongued messages of unhealthy habits.

Good Morning!
Anyone who is under the age of 30, or is associated with anyone under the age of thirty recognizes what OMG means. When I was about 7 or 8 we were scandalized if anyone swore (even though we did hear it at home). If one of our peers was angry at someone they would shout Eat S—T! And everyone would know that person had been pushed to the limit. Okay, so I’m showing my age but it turns out that eating feces is proving to be beneficial for people who have dire colon issues. Yuck!!
If you follow Dr. Mercola, there is some scientific evidence to back this up: “According to Dr. Ravi Kamepalli, MD, an infectious diseases physician and author of a study on fecal transplantation tolerance, fecal transplantation has a 98 percent success rate, and the vast majority of patients report being overall satisfied with the ease and effectiveness of the procedure.” I personally would rather take Probiotics than eat someone else’s fecal material—I don’t care how processed it is.
Healthy gut flora can be obtained by eating fermented foods. Yogurt has a small amount of it and if the colon is really challenged, it will make a small difference. Most yogurt is loaded with sugar which contributes to the growth of yeast (bacteria’s antagonist). So, the more sugar you eat the more imbalances you will have in gut flora.
Many things disrupt friendly bacteria and the antibiotic over-use is one of them. There is also: the constant use of antibacterial soaps, things like Purell—kill off bacteria but also strip the skin of its natural pH; stress and worry will kill off good bacteria; some medications will kill off friendly flora.
When a baby is born it gets its first exposure to friendly flora in the birth canal. If the mother didn’t have a healthy gut then she didn’t have this defense to pass on and the baby then can get it through nursing but most often needs to have supplementation. Colic and other concerns such as Thrush are a result of not enough healthy bacteria. Read More This is one of the reasons I am adamant about taking Probiotics as part of a health program. There is no evidence that you can take too much. Everyone needs probiotics, even children.
There is a huge relationship to gut health and the entire level of health in the body. I have observed over the years that poor digestion and gut ill-health are the primary causes of most of the conditions that people struggle with. When you have poor intestinal flora it can upset your ability to absorb certain nutrients.
The older you get the more your digestive system breaks down, especially if you have been following the standard American diet. Specifically the lining of your stomach gradually loses its ability to produce hydrochloric acid which releases vitamin B12 from your food. The use of antacids or anti-ulcer drugs will also lower your stomach acid secretion and decrease your ability to absorb vitamin B12. Infection with Helicobacter pylori (or H Pylori), a common contributor to stomach ulcers, can also result in vitamin B12 deficiency. (According to Dr. J. Mercola)
So, if B vitamins are not absorbed well that can take its toll on the nervous system which depends greatly on a good supply of B vitamins to maintain health. B vitamins are water soluble and washed out. During times of stress we use up large amounts of B vitamin to assist the nervous system.

Immune health is also affected by the gut and we can see that there is a relationship to people having no defense against some of the infectious diseases that people are dying of. It isn’t because they are more rampant but the fact that we are better hosts for these conditions. In science first comes observation and then theorization. So, is it the disease, or is it the lack of resistance that resulted in death.
Is your gut able to defend? How often do you have a cold? What are you doing about it? What is your elimination like? The Chinese believe that the colon and lungs are related. If you are congested in the colon then the respiratory system will try to take over and eliminate toxins by increasing mucus production and temperature. We then come along and take “medications” to reduce the fever and histamine production. This creates a cycle ending up with allergies or even asthma. So you then treat the asthma and the real cause is never addressed.
Does your gut have an abundance of good bacteria? As stated above most people as they age lose the ability to digest and maintain a healthy gut. I think it is all but impossible to maintain health unless you are taking enzymes and probiotics. Even if you eat right, you may not be getting optimum value out of that food unless you also take enzymes. Even if you have regular bowel movements (which should be 2-3 per day); you may not have a healthy balance of good bacteria.
Are you a “Germaphobic”? Constantly using bleached wipes and antibacterial soaps are stripping the healthy pH of your skin making it susceptible to infection. I use Silver Gel on my hands and face. This gel is antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral yet it does not disrupt the health of the skin or change its pH. When you drink Silver Shield you do not disrupt the health of the friendly flora in your gut.
We have all followed the Germ Theory—its not working for us! We need to get dirty. Maybe we should all make mud pies and eat them. We need to look at being the wrong environment to harbor disease. Flies do not make garbage—garbage draws flies.

You may think I am going to discuss Seasonal Affective Disorder which is a concern many people have when autumn and then winter approaches. Good Morning!
What do you wait in line for? Is it the next teller, at the store, to get gas, at a restaurant, movie or entertainment/sports event? We’ve all done it! For some reason, or another, we’ve had to wait our turn.
What do you do while waiting? Do you people watch, text, or just get angry? Some people will make use of the waiting time and catch up on other things with their smart phone. If you are calling someone and talking with them while waiting and then your turn comes up—do you say you’ll call them back or continue with the call?
If you continue with the call, more than likely you have to hold the phone with your shoulder and this creates stress on the neck muscles. There is also evidence that having a phone next to your head is stressful on the ear, temple, brain and associated structures. The phone is a conduit and it is sending that energy into your body and disrupting your energetic field. Our bodies have an energy field and anything that is battery operated can interfere with our energy production.
But, speaking of phones—there is another time we often have to wait. Do you get frustrated when you’ve punched in a series of numbers, never speaking to a human voice only a recorded one asking you to say or punch in numbers? What is worse is when you’ve spent 15 minutes or so punching in the numbers and then get disconnected! Whew! Now that is a test of patience. Most companies employ devices that sort phone calls by asking you to click on a number to direct your call. Then you are in line for the next available operator.
The Brits call it queuing up. Waiting your turn is international. Some places will provide you with entertainment such as a video screen or music on hold. That’s fine if you care for that type of music. I often will put the phone on speaker and go about doing other work. Sometimes they will come on and tell you approximately when your call will be answered and that helps. Whatever the wait time it becomes an exercise in being patient.
Tomorrow I’ll be boarding a flight to Las Vegas and there will be many “wait” lines—ticketing, security, boarding, waiting to get luggage etc. When the lines are expected, one can deal with it a little better. It is when we are in a hurry and haven’t allowed waiting time that makes us anxious. Planning your wait time can help as well. My husband plays solitaire on his phone to help him pass the time. You can fill your time doing stretches and isometric exercises; or, planning your next “wait” period.
Whether it is waiting at a light or for heavy traffic to clear; if we haven’t allowed the time and we want to be at a certain place by a certain time can make the difference between anxiety and complaisance. Relaxing and telling yourself that there is nothing you can do about the wait may help. It is better to recognize when we can’t do anything about our circumstances. There is a lot that isn’t within our control—let it go! Hanging on to things we have no control over causes stress.
The more stress we put on ourselves the bigger the impact on our health. Planning for the unexpected can smooth the way. Taking classes that help you deal with the physical or emotional stress in your life will be a big step toward being healthy.
